Abstract:The rise of Generative Artificial Intelligence (G-AI) has transformed the creative arts landscape by producing novel artwork, whereas in the same time raising ethical concerns. While previous studies have addressed these concerns from technical and societal viewpoints, there is a lack of discussion from an HCI perspective, especially considering the community's perception and the visual artists as human factors. Our study investigates G-AI's impact on visual artists and their relationship with GAI to inform HCI research. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 novice visual artists from an art college in the university with G-AI courses and practices. Our findings reveal (1) the mis-conception and the evolving adoption of visual artists, (2) the miscellaneous opinions of the society on visual artists' creative work, and (3) the co-existence of confrontation and collaboration between visual artists and G-AI. We explore future HCI research opportunities to address these issues.

1. **Evolution of Attitudes**:
- Novice artists' attitudes towards AI tools went through three stages: complete non-use, trial use, and proficient use. At each stage, their attitudes and perceptions changed significantly.
- In the non-use stage, artists held negative stereotypes about AI tools; in the trial use stage, they were surprised by AI's efficient generation capabilities but also faced frustrations; in the proficient use stage, their attitudes became more positive, but they also recognized the limitations of AI.
2. **Reasons for Rejection and Disadvantages**:
- Copyright Issues: Artists believe AI-generated works involve copyright issues, as many AI models are trained using human artists' works without permission.
- Lack of Originality: AI-generated works are seen as collages and combinations, lacking soul, style, and creative intent.
- Quality and Aesthetic Issues: Although AI-generated images have high integrity, they often fall short in detail handling, light and shadow effects, and composition.
- Simplicity of AI Creation: Artists think using G-AI can quickly complete works, reducing labor time, which may be seen as laziness.
- Different Processing Logic: Artists believe G-AI's processing logic differs from humans, making it difficult to understand and modify AI-generated works.
3. **Reasons for Acceptance and Advantages**:
- AI can generate stunning works. Although most artists still believe AI lacks originality, they acknowledge that AI can sometimes produce surprising effects.
- AI can efficiently complete works, often faster than humans, with comparable quality. This is particularly useful when complex works need to be completed in a short time.

This study reveals the complexity of novice visual artists' attitudes and perceptions towards G-AI, emphasizing that future HCI research should focus on better supporting collaboration between artists and AI, improving the usability and transparency of AI tools to promote the development of artistic creation.
