Abstract:Let G be a finite group. Recently various functions are defined related to the set of order elements of G and using these functions, some interesting criteria for solvability, nilpotency, supersolvability and etc., are obtained. In this paper, we continue this work and for a finite group G , we consider the function m(G)=∑g∈G1/o(g) , where o ( g ) denotes the order of g∈G . In this paper, we prove that if m(G) or m(G) , then G is solvable, supersolvable, nilpotent, abelian or cyclic, respectively.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group and let ψ(G) denote the sum of element orders of G. It is well-known that the maximum value of φ on the set of groups of order n, where n is a positive integer, will occur at the cyclic group Cn. For nilpotent groups, we prove a natural generalization of this result, obtained by replacing the element orders of G with the element orders relative to a certain subgroup H of G. Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:In this paper we consider two functions related to the arithmetic and geometric means of element orders of a finite group, showing that certain lower bounds on such functions strongly affect the group structure. In particular, for every prime p , we prove a sufficient condition for a finite group to be p -nilpotent, that is, a group whose elements of p′ -order form a normal subgroup. Moreover, we characterize finite cyclic groups with prescribed number of prime divisors.

Abstract:A finite group $G$ is said to be a $\mathcal{B}_{\psi}$-group if $\psi(H)<|G|$ for any proper subgroup $H$ of $G$, where $\psi(H)$ denotes the sum of element orders of $H$. In this paper, we characterize the $\mathcal{B}_{\psi}$-groups up to the class of finite nilpotent groups. We also study the above inequality in the case of finite $P$-groups and Schmidt groups, respectively.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and $\sigma_1(G)=\frac{1}{|G|}\sum_{H\leq G}\,|H|$. Under some restrictions on the number of conjugacy classes of (non-normal) maximal subgroups of $G$, we prove that if $\sigma_1(G)<\frac{117}{20}\,$, then $G$ is solvable. This partially solves an open problem posed in \cite{9}.

Abstract:This paper is an attempt to find out which properties of a finite group G can be expressed in terms of commutators of elements of coprime orders. A criterion of solubility of G in terms of such commutators is obtained. We also conjecture that every element of a nonabelian simple group is a commutator of elements of coprime orders and we confirm this conjecture for the alternating groups.

Abstract:This paper provides a bridge between two active areas of research, the spectrum (set of element orders) and the power graph of a finite group. The order sequence of a finite group $G$ is the list of orders of elements of the group, arranged in non-decreasing order. Order sequences of groups of order $n$ are ordered by elementwise domination, forming a partially ordered set. We prove a number of results about this poset, among them the following. M.~Amiri recently proved that the poset has a unique maximal element, corresponding to the cyclic group. We show that the product of orders in a cyclic group of order $n$ is at least $q^{\phi(n)}$ times as large as the product in any non-cyclic group,where $q$ is the smallest prime divisor of $n$ and $\phi$ is Euler's function, with a similar result for the sum. The poset of order sequences of abelian groups of order $p^n$ is naturally isomorphic to the (well-studied) poset of partitions of $n$ with its natural partial order. If there exists a non-nilpotent group of order $n$, then there exists such a group whose order sequence is dominated by the order sequence of any nilpotent group of order $n$. There is a product operation on finite ordered sequences, defined by forming all products and sorting them into non-decreasing order. The product of order sequences of groups $G$ and $H$ is the order sequence of a group if and only if $|G|$ and $|H|$ are coprime. The paper concludes with a number of open problems.

Abstract:Jin proved that whenever A and B are sets of positive upper density in Z, A+B is piecewise syndetic. Jin's theorem was subsequently generalized by Jin and Keisler to a certain family of abelian groups, which in particular contains Zd. Answering a question of Jin and Keisler, we show that this result can be extended to countable amenable groups. Moreover we establish that such sumsets (or — depending on the notation — “product sets”) are piecewise Bohr, a result which for G=Z was proved by Bergelson, Furstenberg and Weiss. In the case of an abelian group G, we show that a set is piecewise Bohr if and only if it contains a sumset of two sets of positive upper Banach density.

Element orders in extraspecial groups

Abstract:By using the structure and some properties of extraspecial and generalized/almost extraspecial $p$-groups, we explicitly determine the number of elements of specific orders in such groups. As a consequence, one may find the number of cyclic subgroups of any (generalized/almost) extraspecial group. For a finite group $G$, the ratio of the number of cyclic subgroups to the number of subgroups is called the cyclicity degree of $G$ and is denoted by $cdeg(G)$. We show that the set containing the cyclicity degrees of all finite groups is dense in $[0, 1]$. This is equivalent to giving an affirmative answer to the following question posed by Tóth and Tărnăuceanu: ``For every $a\in [0, 1]$, does there exist a sequence $(G_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of finite groups such that $\displaystyle\lim_{n\to\infty} cdeg(G_n)=a$?". We show that such sequences are formed of finite direct products of extraspecial groups of a specific type.

A zero-sum problem on G asks for the smallest positive integer k such that for any sequence a1,... ,ak of elements of G there exists a subsequence of required length the sum of whose terms vanishes. In this talk we will give a survey of problems and results in this field. In particular, we will talk about Olson's theorem on the Davenport constanst of an abelian p-group, Reiher's celebrated proof of the Kemnitz conjecture, and the speaker's extension of the Erd˝os-Ginzburg-Ziv theorem involving covers of Z.

Abstract:In this paper we study the finite groups in which every element has prime power order, briefly them EPPO-groups. The classification of EPPO-groups is given including the cases of solvable, non-solvable and simple EPPO-groups. This paper is published in Journal of Yunnan Education College, no.1(1986), p.2-10 (in Chinese). Translate it to English is helpful for readers for citing some conclusions of this paper. For example, the result of solvable EPPO-groups(see Theorem 2.4 in the text) is detailed more than G. Higman's conclusion (see reference 1 in this paper).

Abstract:In a finite group G , ρ(G) denotes the product of element orders of G . Let p,q,r,s and t be prime numbers. Recently, it was proved that Cp3 , C pq , Cp2q and C pqrs are characterizable by the product of element orders, and if ρ(G)=ρ(Cpqr) , then G≅A5 or Cpqr . In this paper, we continue this work and we show that Cp×A5 (for p > 5) and C pqrst are characterizable by the product of element orders. In the rest of the paper, we show that if ρ(G)=ρ(Cpqr)sρ(Cs)p2q, then (p,q,r,s)=(2,3,5,11) and G≅L2(11) . This shows that the structure of ρ(G) uniquely determined L2(11) and so L2(11) is the only group with this form of ρ(G) .

How large is the character degree sum compared to the character table sum for a finite group?

Abstract:In 1961, Solomon gave upper and lower bounds for the sum of all the entries in the character table of a finite group in terms of elementary properties of the group. In a different direction, we consider the ratio of the character table sum to the sum of the entries in the first column, also known as the character degree sum, in this work. First, we propose that this ratio is at most two for many natural groups. Secondly, we extend a conjecture of Fields to postulate that this ratio is at least one with equality if and only if the group is abelian. We establish the validity of this property and conjecture for all finite irreducible Coxeter groups. In addition, we prove the conjecture for generalized symmetric groups. The main tool we use is that the sum of a column in the character table of an irreducible Coxeter group (resp. generalized symmetric group) is given by the number of square roots (resp. absolute square roots) of the corresponding conjugacy class representative. As a byproduct of our results, we show that the asymptotics of character table sums is the same as the number of involutions in symmetric, hyperoctahedral and demihyperoctahedral groups. We also derive explicit generating functions for the character table sums for these latter groups as infinite products of continued fractions. In the same spirit, we prove similar generating function formulas for the number of square roots and absolute square roots in $n$ for the generalized symmetric groups $G(r,1,n)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the product of orders of composition factors of odd order in a composition series of a finite linear group. First we generalize a result by Manz and Wolf about the order of solvable linear groups of odd order. Then we use this result to find bounds for the product of orders of composition factors of odd order in a composition series of a finite linear group.

Abstract:Given a positive integer $u$ and a simple algebraic group $G$ defined over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $p$, we derive properties about the subvariety $G_{[u]}$ of $G$ consisting of elements of $G$ of order dividing $u$. In particular, we determine the dimension of $G_{[u]}$, completing results of Lawther [7] in the special case where $G$ is of adjoint type. We also apply our results to the study of finite simple quotients of triangle groups, giving further insight on a conjecture we proposed in [10] as well as proving that some finite quasisimple groups are not quotients of certain triangle groups.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ and an irreducible complex character $\chi$ of $G$, the codegree of $\chi$ is defined as the integer ${\rm cod}(\chi)=|G:\ker\chi|/\chi(1)$. It was conjectured by G. Qian in [13] that, for every element $g$ of $G$, there exists an irreducible character $\chi$ of $G$ such that ${\rm cod}(\chi)$ is a multiple of the order of $g$; the conjecture has been verified under the assumption that $G$ is solvable ([13]) or almost-simple ([11]). In this paper, we prove that Qian's conjecture is true for every finite group whose Fitting subgroup is trivial, and we show that the analysis of the full conjecture can be reduced to groups having a solvable socle.

Abstract:In this paper, we summarize the work on the characterization of finite simple groups and the study on finite groups with the set of element orders and two orders (the order of group and the set of element orders). Some related topics, and the applications together with their generalizations are also discussed. The original version of this article was published in Chinese in the journal Scientia Sinica Mathematica, no.53(2023), pp.931-952. This revised and expanded version has corrected several errors and added quite a few contents. Especially, it is pointed that this work has applications in mathematics and computational complexity theory.
