Abstract:I introduce a new family of axioms extending ZFC set theory, the $\Sigma_n$-correct forcing axioms. These assert roughly that whenever a forcing name $\dot{a}$ can be forced by a poset in some forcing class $\Gamma$ to have some $\Sigma_n$ property $\phi$ which is provably preserved by all further forcing in $\Gamma$, then $\dot{a}$ reflects to some small name such that there is already in $V$ a filter which interprets that small name so that $\phi$ holds. $\Sigma_1$-correct forcing axioms turn out to be equivalent to classical forcing axioms, while $\Sigma_2$-correct forcing axioms for $\Sigma_2$-definable forcing classes are consistent relative to a supercompact cardinal (and in fact hold in the standard model of a classical forcing axiom constructed as an extension of a model with a supercompact), $\Sigma_3$-correct forcing axioms are consistent relative to an extendible cardinal, and more generally $\Sigma_n$-correct forcing axioms are consistent relative to a hierarchy of large cardinals generalizing supercompactness and extendibility whose supremum is the first-order version of Vopenka's Principle.

Abstract:This dissertation surveys several topics in the general areas of iterated forcing, infinite combinatorics and set theory of the reals. There are two parts. In the first half I consider alternative versions of the Cichoń diagram. First I show that for a wide variety of reduction concepts there is a Cichoń diagram for effective cardinal characteristics relativized to that reduction. As an application I investigate in detail the Cichoń diagram for degrees of constructibility relative to a fixed inner model of ZFC. Then I study generalizations of cardinal characteristics to the space of functions $f:\omega^\omega \to \omega^\omega$. I prove that these cardinals can be organized into two diagrams analogous to the standard Cichoń diagram, prove several independence results and investigate the relation between these cardinals and the standard cardinal invariants on omega. In the second half of the thesis I look at forcing axioms compatible with CH. First I consider Jensen's subcomplete and subproper forcing. I generalize these notions to larger classes which are (apparently) much more nicely behaved structurally. I prove iteration and preservation theorems for both classes and use these to produce many new models of the subcomplete forcing axiom. Finally I deal with dee-complete forcing and its associated axiom DCFA. Extending a well-known result of Shelah, I show that if a tree of height $\omega_1$ with no branch can be embedded into an $\omega_1$-tree, possibly with uncountable branches, then it can be specialized without adding reals. As a consequence I give a fleshed out proof that DCFA implies there are no Kurepa trees, even if CH fails.

Abstract:We study methods to obtain the consistency of forcing axioms, and particularly higher forcing axioms. We first force over a model with a supercompact cardinal $\theta>\kappa$ to get the consistency of the forcing axiom for $\kappa$-strongly proper forcing notions which are also $\kappa$-lattice, and then eliminate the need for large cardinals. The proof goes through a natural reflection property for $\kappa$-strongly proper forcings. We also produce a model of this forcing axiom with $2^\kappa$ arbitrarily large, and prove the inconsistency of certain natural strengthenings of the axiom.

Abstract:We show that Dependent Choice is a sufficient choice principle for developing the basic theory of proper forcing, and for deriving generic absoluteness for the Chang model in the presence of large cardinals, even with respect to DC-preserving symmetric submodels of forcing extensions. Hence, ZF+DC not only provides the right framework for developing classical analysis, but is also the right base theory over which to safeguard truth in analysis from the independence phenomenon in the presence of large cardinals. We also investigate some basic consequences of the Proper Forcing Axiom in ZF, and formulate a natural question about the generic absoluteness of the Proper Forcing Axiom in ZF+DC and ZFC. Our results confirm ZF+DC as a natural foundation for a significant portion of "classical mathematics" and provide support to the idea of this theory being also a natural foundation for a large part of set theory.

Moreover, let R be the set of instances of the Axiom of Replacement. We isolated a 21-element subset Ω⊆R and defined F:R→R such that for every Φ⊆R and M -generic G , M⊨ZC∪F"Φ∪Ω implies M[G]⊨ZC∪Φ∪{¬CH} , where ZC is Zermelo set theory with Choice. To achieve this, we worked in the proof assistant Isabelle , basing our development on the Isabelle/ZF library by L. Paulson and others.

Abstract:Journal of Mathematical Logic, Ahead of Print. According to a theorem due to Kenneth Kunen, under ZFC, there is no ordinal [math] and nontrivial elementary embedding [math]. His proof relied on the Axiom of Choice (AC), and no proof from ZF alone is has been discovered. [math] is the assertion, introduced by Hugh Woodin, that [math] is an ordinal and there is an elementary embedding [math] with critical point [math]. And [math] asserts that [math] holds for some [math]. The axiom [math] is one of the strongest large cardinals not known to be inconsistent with AC. It is usually studied assuming ZFC in the full universe [math] (in which case [math] must be a limit ordinal), but we assume only ZF. We prove, assuming ZF [math] [math] [math] "[math] is an even ordinal", that there is a proper class transitive inner model [math] containing [math] and satisfying ZF [math] [math] [math] "there is an elementary embedding [math]"; in fact we will have [math] ⊆[math], where [math] witnesses [math] in [math]. This result was first proved by the author under the added assumption that [math] exists; Gabe Goldberg noticed that this extra assumption was unnecessary. If also [math] is a limit ordinal and [math]-DC holds in [math], then the model [math] will also satisfy [math]-DC. We show that ZFC [math] "[math] is even" [math] [math] implies [math] exists for every [math], but if consistent, this theory does not imply [math] exists.

Axiomatization and Forcing in Set Theory with Urelements

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we consider several natural axioms in urelement set theory, including the Collection Principle, the Reflection Principle, the Dependent Choice scheme and its generalizations, as well as other axioms specifically concerning urelements. We prove that these axioms form a hierarchy over $\ZFCUR$ (ZFC with urelements formulated with Replacement) in terms of direct implication. The second part of the paper studies forcing over countable transitive models of $\ZFUR$. We propose a new definition of $¶$-names to address an issue with the existing approach. We then prove the fundamental theorem of forcing with urelements regarding axiom preservation. Moreover, we show that forcing can destroy and recover certain axioms within the previously established hierarchy. Finally, we demonstrate how ground model definability may fail when the ground model contains a proper class of urelements.

Abstract:We introduce and consider the inner-model reflection principle, which asserts that whenever a statement $\varphi(a)$ in the first-order language of set theory is true in the set-theoretic universe $V$, then it is also true in a proper inner model $W\subsetneq V$. A stronger principle, the ground-model reflection principle, asserts that any such $\varphi(a)$ true in $V$ is also true in some non-trivial ground model of the universe with respect to set forcing. These principles each express a form of width reflection in contrast to the usual height reflection of the Lévy-Montague reflection theorem. They are each equiconsistent with ZFC and indeed $\Pi_2$-conservative over ZFC, being forceable by class forcing while preserving any desired rank-initial segment of the universe. Furthermore, the inner-model reflection principle is a consequence of the existence of sufficient large cardinals, and lightface formulations of the reflection principles follow from the maximality principle MP and from the inner-model hypothesis IMH. We also consider some questions concerning the expressibility of the principles.

Abstract:It is well known that ZFC, despite its usefulness as a foundational theory for mathematics, has two unwanted features: it cannot be written down explicitly due to its infinitely many axioms, and it has a countable model due to the Löwenheim-Skolem theorem. This paper presents the axioms one has to accept to get rid of these two features. For that matter, some twenty axioms are formulated in a nonstandard first-order language with countable many constants: to this collection of axioms is associated a universe of discourse consisting of a class of objects, each of which is a set, and a class of arrows, each of which is a function. The axioms of ZF are derived from this finite axiom scheme, and it is shown that it does not have a countable model--if it has a model at all, that is. Furthermore, the axioms of category theory are proven to hold: the present universe may therefore serve as an ontological basis for category theory. However, it has not been investigated whether any of the soundness and completeness properties hold for the present theory: the inevitable conclusion is therefore that only further research can establish whether the present results indeed constitute an advancement in the foundations of mathematics.

Forcing over choiceless models and generic absoluteness

Abstract:We develop a toolbox for forcing over arbitrary models of set theory without the axiom of choice. In particular, we introduce a variant of the countable chain condition and prove an iteration theorem that applies to many classical forcings such as Cohen forcing and random algebras. Our approach sidesteps the problem that forcing with the countable chain condition can collapse $\omega_1$ by a recent result of Karagila and Schweber. Using this, we show that adding many Cohen reals and random reals leads to different theories. This result is due to Woodin. Thus one can always change the theory of the universe by forcing, just like the continuum hypothesis and its negation can be obtained by forcing over arbitrary models with choice. We further study principles stipulating that the first-order theory of the universe remains the same in all generic extension by a fixed class of forcings. Extending a result of Woodin, we show that even for very restricted classes such as the class of all finite support products of Cohen forcing or the class of all random algebras, this principle implies that all infinite cardinals have countable cofinality.

Abstract:We develop a forcing framework based on the idea of amalgamating language fragments into a theory with a canonical term model. We then demonstrate the usefulness of this framework by applying it to variants of the extended Namba problem, as well as to the analysis of models of certain theories with constraints in interpretation (TCIs). The foundations for a theory of TCIs and their models are laid in parallel to the development of our framework, and are of independent interest.

Abstract:We consider the modality "$\varphi$ is true in every $\sigma$-centered forcing extension", denoted $\square\varphi$, and its dual "$\varphi$ is true in some $\sigma$-centered forcing extension", denoted $\lozenge\varphi$ (where $\varphi$ is a statement in set theory), which give rise to the notion of a "principle of $\sigma$-centered forcing". We prove that if ZFC is consistent, then the modal logic of $\sigma$-centered forcing, i.e. the ZFC-provable principles of $\sigma$-centered forcing, is exactly $\mathsf{S4.2}$. We also generalize this result to other related classes of forcing.

Abstract:We bring forward a logical system of transition algebras that enhances many-sorted first-order logic using features from dynamic logics. The sentences we consider include compositions, unions, and transitive closures of transition relations, which are treated similarly to the actions used in dynamic logics in order to define necessity and possibility operators. This leads to a higher degree of expressivity than that of many-sorted first-order logic. For example, one can finitely axiomatize both the finiteness and the reachability of models, neither of which are ordinarily possible in many-sorted first-order logic. We introduce syntactic entailment and study basic properties such as compactness and completeness, showing that the latter does not hold when standard finitary proof rules are used. Consequently, we define proof rules having both finite and countably infinite premises, and we provide conditions under which completeness can be proved. To that end, we generalize the forcing method introduced in model theory by Robinson from a single signature to a category of signatures, and we apply it to obtain a completeness result for signatures that are at most countable.

If Chang's conjecture fails, Martin's axiom holds and the continuum is greater than $\aleph_2$, there are no weakly Laver ideals over $\aleph_1$. We also prove that under Baumgartner's axiom there are no Laver ideals over $\aleph_2$.

Abstract:In recent work, the second author extended combinatorial principles due to Jech and Magidor that characterize certain large cardinal properties so that they can also hold true for small cardinals. For inaccessible cardinals, these modifications have no effect, and the resulting principles still give the same characterization of large cardinals. We prove that the proper forcing axiom PFA implies these principles hold for ω2. Using this, we argue to show that any of the known methods for forcing models of PFA from a large cardinal assumption requires a strongly compact cardinal. If one forces PFA using a proper forcing, then we get the optimal result that a supercompact cardinal is necessary.

Abstract:We present a detailed general framework to describe the forcing $\tilde{\mathbb{E}}$, defined by Kellner, Shelah and Tanăsie to prove the consistency with ZFC of an alternative order of Cichoń's maximum. Our presentation is close to the framework of tree-creature forcing notions from Horowitz and Shelah. We show that the posets in this class have strong FAM limits for intervals (in recent terminology, they are $\sigma$-FAM-linked) and, furthermore, that they also have strong ultrafilter limits for intervals.

Abstract:Recently, in Axioms 10(2): 119 (2021), a nonclassical first-order theory T of sets and functions has been introduced as the collection of axioms we have to accept if we want a foundational theory for (all of) mathematics that is not weaker than ZF, that is finitely axiomatized, and that does not have a countable model (if it has a model at all, that is). Here we prove that T is relatively consistent with ZF. We conclude that this is an important step towards showing that T is an advancement in the foundations of mathematics.
