Abstract:The Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model perhaps is the easiest and the most basic model for topological excitations. Many variations and extensions of the SSH model have been proposed and explored to better understand both fundamental and novel aspects of topological physics. The SSH4 model has been proposed theoretically as an extended SSH model with higher dimension (the internal dimension changes from two to four). It has been proposed that the winding number in this system can be determined through a higher-dimensional extension of the mean chiral displacement measurement, however, this has not yet been verified in experiment. Here, we report the realization of this model with ultracold atoms in a momentum lattice. We verify the winding number through measurement of the mean chiral displacement in a system with higher internal dimension, we map out the topological phase transition in this system, and we confirm the topological edge state by observation of the quench dynamics when atoms are initially prepared at the system boundary.
A topological interpretation of the KZ system

Abstract:We show that the KZ system has a purely topological interpretation in the sense that it may be understood as a variation of complex mixed Hodge structure whose successive pure weight quotients are polarized. This in a sense completes and elucidates work of Schechtman-Varchenko done in the early 1990's. A central ingredient is a new realization of the irreducible highest weight representations of a Lie algebra of Kac-Moody type, namely on an algebra of rational polydifferentials on a countable product of Riemann spheres.

Abstract:We propose, in bihamiltonian formalism, a version of the Toda lattice hierarchy that is satisfied by the two point correlation functions of the CP1 topological sigma model at genus one approximation, and we also show that this bihamiltonian hierarchy is compatible with the Virasoro constraints of Eguchi–Hori–Xiong up to genus two approximation.

Abstract:With the use of mathematical techniques of tropical geometry, it was shown by Mikhalkin some twenty years ago that certain Gromov-Witten invariants associated with topological quantum field theories of pseudoholomorphic maps can be computed by going to the tropical limit of the geometries in question. Here we examine this phenomenon from the physics perspective of topological quantum field theory in the path integral representation, beginning with the case of the topological sigma model before coupling it to topological gravity. We identify the tropicalization of the localization equations, investigate its geometry and symmetries, and study the theory and its observables using the standard cohomological BRST methods. We find that the worldsheet theory exhibits a nonrelativistic structure, similar to theories of the Lifshitz type. Its path-integral formulation does not require a worldsheet complex structure; instead, it is based on a worldsheet foliation structure.

Non-semisimple topological field theory and $\widehat{Z}$-invariants from $\mathfrak{osp}(1 \vert 2)$

Abstract:We construct three dimensional non-semisimple topological field theories from the unrolled quantum group of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1 \vert 2)$. More precisely, the quantum group depends on a root of unity $q=e^{\frac{2 \pi \sqrt{-1}}{r}}$, where $r$ is a positive integer greater than $2$, and the construction applies when $r$ is not congruent to $4$ modulo $8$. The algebraic result which underlies the construction is the existence of a relative modular structure on the non-finite, non-semisimple category of weight modules for the quantum group. We prove a Verlinde formula which allows for the computation of dimensions and Euler characteristics of topological field theory state spaces of unmarked surfaces. When $r$ is congruent to $\pm 1$ or $\pm 2$ modulo $8$, we relate the resulting $3$-manifold invariants with physicists' $\widehat{Z}$-invariants associated to $\mathfrak{osp}(1 \vert 2)$. Finally, we establish a relation between $\widehat{Z}$-invariants associated to $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ and $\mathfrak{osp}(1 \vert 2)$ which was conjectured in the physics literature.

Abstract:We analyze the topological properties of a family of generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains and mesh geometries. In both the geometries the usual staggering in the distribution of the two overlap integrals is delayed (in space) by the inclusion of a third (additional) hopping term. A tight-binding Hamiltonian is used to unravel the topological phases, characterized by a topological invariant. While in the linear chains, the topological invariant (the Zak phase) always appears to be quantized, in the quasi-one dimensional strip geometries and the generalized SSH mesh patterns the quantization of the Zak phase is sensitive to the strength of the additional interaction (the 'extra' hopping integral). We study its influence thoroughly and explore the edge states and their robustness against disorder in the cross-linked generalized SSH mesh geometries. The systems considered here can be taken to model (though crudely) two-dimensional polymers where the cross-linking brings in non-trivial modification of the energy bands and transport properties. In addition to the topological features studied, we provide a prescription to unravel any flat , non-dispersive energy bands in the mesh geometries, along with the structure and distribution of the compact localized eigenstates. Our results are analytically exact.

Abstract:We provide a rigorous perturbative quantization of the B-twisted topological sigma model via a first order quantum field theory on derived mapping space in the formal neighborhood of constant maps. We prove that the first Chern class of the target manifold is the obstruction to the quantization via Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. When the first Chern class vanishes, i.e. on Calabi-Yau manifolds, the factorization algebra of observables gives rise to the expected topological correlation functions in the B-model. We explain a twisting procedure to generalize to the Landau-Ginzburg case, and show that the resulting topological correlations coincide with Vafa's residue formula.

Abstract:A particular dispersive generalization of long water wave equation in $1+1$ dimensions, which is important in the study of matrix models without scaling limit, known as two--Boson (TB) equation, as well as the associated hierarchy has been derived from the zero curvature condition on the gauge group $SL(2,R)\otimes U(1)$. The supersymmetric extension of the two--Boson (sTB) hierarchy has similarly been derived from the zero curvature condition associated with the gauge supergroup $OSp(2|2)$. Topological algebras arise naturally as the second Hamiltonian structure of these classical integrable systems, indicating a close relationship of these models with 2d topological field theories.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss how gauging one-form symmetries in Chern-Simons theories is implemented in an A-twisted topological open string theory. For example, the contribution from a fixed H/Z bundle on a three-manifold M, arising in a BZ gauging of H Chern-Simons, for Z a finite subgroup of the center of H, is described by an open string worldsheet theory whose bulk is a sigma model with target a Z-gerbe (a bundle of one-form symmetries) over T^* M, of characteristic class determined by the H/Z bundle. We give a worldsheet picture of the decomposition of one-form-symmetry-gauged Chern-Simons in three dimensinos, and we describe how a target-space constraint on bundles arising in the gauged Chern-Simons theory has a natural worldsheet realization. Our proposal provides examples of the expected correspondence between worldsheet global higher-form symmetries, and target-space gauged higher-form symmetries.

Abstract:This paper presents two methods for topological analysis of the complex Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model using the quantum geometric tensor: Berry phase and topological data analysis. We demonstrate how both methods can effectively generate topological phase diagrams for the model, revealing two distinct regions based on the relative magnitudes of the parameters $|v|$ and $|w|$. Specifically, when $|v| > |w|$, the system is found to be topologically trivial, whereas for $|v| < |w|$, it exhibits topologically non-trivial behavior. Our results contribute to building the groundwork for topological analysis of more complicated SSH-type models.

Abstract:We show that the low-energy effective actions of two ten-dimensional supersymmetric heterotic strings are different by a \mathbb{Z}_3 Z 3 -valued discrete topological term even after we turn off the E_8×E_8 E 8 × E 8 and Spin(32)/\mathbb{Z}_2 S p i n ( 32 ) / Z 2 gauge fields. This will be demonstrated by considering the inflow of normal bundle anomaly to the respective NS5-branes from the bulk. This result will be used to show further that the Spin(16)×Spin(16) S p i n ( 16 ) × S p i n ( 16 ) non-tachyonic non-supersymmetric heterotic string has the same non-zero \mathbb{Z}_3 Z 3 -valued discrete topological term. We will also explain the relation of our findings to the theory of topological modular forms. The paper is written as a string theory paper, except for an appendix translating the content in mathematical terms. We will explain there that our finding identifies a representative of the \mathbb{Z}/3 Z / 3 -torsion element of \pi_{-32}\mathrm{TMF} π − 32 T M F as a particular self-dual vertex operator superalgebra of c=16 c = 16 and how we utilize string duality to arrive at this statement.

Abstract:Topology and generalized symmetries in the $SU(N)/\mathbb{Z}_N$ gauge theory are considered in the continuum and the lattice. Starting from the $SU(N)$ gauge theory with the 't~Hooft twisted boundary condition, we give a simpler explanation of the van~Baal's proof on the fractionality of the topological charge. This description is applicable to both continuum and lattice by using the generalized Lüscher's construction of topology on the lattice. Thus we can recover the $SU(N)/\mathbb{Z}_N$ principal bundle from lattice $SU(N)$ gauge fields being subject to the $\mathbb{Z}_N$-relaxed cocycle condition. We explicitly demonstrate the fractional topological charge, and verify an equivalence with other constructions reported recently based on different ideas. Gauging the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ $1$-form center symmetry enables lattice gauge theories to couple with the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ $2$-form gauge field as a simple lattice integer field, and to reproduce the Kapustin--Seiberg prescription in the continuum limit. Our construction is also applied to analyzing the higher-group structure in the $SU(N)$ gauge theory with the instanton-sum modification.

Abstract:In this letter, we revisit the quantisation problem for a fundamental model of classical mechanics - the Zhukovsky-Volterra top. We have discovered a four-parametric pencil of compatible Poisson brackets, comprising two quadratic and two linear Poisson brackets. Using the quantisation ideal method, we have identified two distinct quantisations of the Zhukovsky-Volterra top. The first type corresponds to the universal enveloping algebras of $so(3)$, leading to Lie-Poisson brackets in the classical limit. The second type can be regarded as a quantisation of the four-parametric inhomogeneous quadratic Poisson pencil. We discuss the relationships between the quantisations obtained in our paper, Sklyanin's quantisation of the Euler top, and Levin-Olshanetsky-Zotov's quantisation of the Zhukovsky-Volterra top.

Topological QBits in Flux-Quantized Super-Gravity

Abstract:We first give a brief exposition of our recent realization of anyonic quantum states on single M5-brane probes in 11D super-gravity backgrounds, by non-perturbative quantization of the topological sector of the self-dual tensor field on the 6D worldvolume, after its proper flux-quantization. This opens the prospect of holographic models for topological qbits away from the usual but unrealistic limit of large numbers of branes. At the same time, the elementary homotopy-theoretic nature of the construction yields a slick expression of topological quantum gates in homotopically-typed programming languages, opening the prospect of topological-hardware aware quantum programming. In view of these results, we end with some more meta-physical remarks on (cohesive) homotopy (type) theory in view of emergent fundamental physics and, possibly, M-theory.

Abstract:Just as non-commutative gauge theories arise from quantising open strings in a large magnetic field, non-Abelian two-form gauge theories may conceivably be constructed by quantising open membranes in a large three-form magnetic background. We make some observations that arise in following this strategy, with an emphasis on the relation to the quantisation of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms (vpd). In particular, we construct consistent non-Abelian interactions of a two-form in 3+1 dimensions, based on gauge invariance under vpd.
