Abstract:We describe a topological gauge theory with underlying Cartan geometry $G/H$ and principal $H$-bundle. The topological action is constructed as a linear combination of the Euler and Pontrjagin numbers coming from entries of the curvature $\bar{\Omega}$ of a Cartan connection. As an example we show that for $G = SO(4,1)$ (respectively $SO(3,2)$) for $\Lambda_0 > 0$ (respectively $\Lambda_0 < 0$), and $H=SO(3,1)$, a very particular linear combination yields the Holst + Euler and Pontrjagin of the curvature $R$ of the spin connection + Nieh-Yan + bare cosmological constant $\Lambda_0$ terms. Additionally, in this construction, the coupling constants of these different terms are inherently linked together. The other example treated is the one of the Möbius group $G= SO(4,2) /\{\pm I\}$ and $H = CO(4,2) \ltimes \mathbb{R}^{3,1}$. By considering a constraint on the "pair of frames" $(\alpha,\beta)$ we retrieve an action comprising all terms compatible with diffeomorphism invariance and local Lorentz invariance described in the previous example + kinetic term for a scalar field $+$ an interaction of that scalar field with the Torsion $T$, the scalar field being related to dilation. Finally, in both examples, we study the equations of motion associated to the total (Gauge + Matter) action. It is especially shown that one of the solutions in the Möbius case consists of Einstein's equations modified by the Holst and Nieh-Yan terms with an additional source term for curvature depending on specific variations of spin density of matter.

Abstract:In this paper the relation between 2d topological gauge theories and Bethe Ansatz equations is reviewed. In addition we present some new results and clarifications. We hope the relations discussed here are particular examples of more general relations between quantum topological fields theories in dimensions $d\leq 4$ and quantum integrable systems.

Abstract:This is an invited survey article on higher gauge theory for the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics, 2nd edition. In particular, we provide a lightning introduction to higher structures and to the construction of the kinematical data of higher gauge theories, i.e. connections on higher principal bundles. We also summarise the most important applications and dynamical principles that have appeared in the literature, and we close with comments on related areas.

Abstract:The interplay between between gauge-field winding numbers, theta-vacua, and the Dirac operator spectrum in finite-volume gauge theories is reconsidered. To assess the weight of each topological sector, we compare the mass-dependent chiral condensate in gauge field sectors of fixed topological index with the answer obtained by summing over the topological charge. Also the microscopic Dirac operator spectrum in the full finite-volume Yang-Mills theory is obtained in this way, by summing over all topological sectors with the appropriate weight.

Topology in 2D non-Abelian Lattice Gauge Theories

Abstract:In two dimensions, $U(N_c)$ gauge theories exhibit a non-trivial topological structure, while $SU(N_c)$ theories are topologically trivial. Hence, for $G = U(N_c)$ the phase space is divided into topological sectors, characterized by a topological index (a.k.a. ``topological charge''). These sectors are separated by action barriers, which diverge if the lattice spacing is taken small, resulting in an algorithmic problem known as ``topological freezing''. We study these theories in various box sizes and at various couplings. With the help of gradient flow we derive instanton-like solutions for 2D $U(N_c)$ theory with a specific focus on the case of $N_c = 2$.

Abstract:This thesis discusses the topological aspects of quantum gravity, focusing on the connection between 2D quantum gravity and 2D topological gravity. The mathematical background for the discussion is presented in the first two chapters. The possible gauge formulations of 2D topological gravity as a BF or a Super BF theory are presented and compared against 2D quantum gravity in the dynamical triangulation scheme. A new identification between topological gravity in the Super BF formulation and the reduced hermitian matrix model at genus zero is explained in depth.
Some Global Problems in Gauge Theories (variations on a Theme of Aharonov and Bohm)

Abstract:Several situations are discussed, in which the sort of global considerations made famous by Aharonov and Bohm in their discussion of the interaction of charged particles with magnetic flux tubes have important physical implications. It is argued that discrete gauge symmetries in the continuum make sense, and manifest themselves most clearly in Aharonov-Bohm type scattering of charged particles off string singularities. The existence of such discrete symmetries has important implications for the quantum mechanics of topologically non-trivial space-times in general and black holes in particular. It is argued that in the non-abelian case essentially new features arise, most notably that the symmetry group of the homogeneous ground state generally ceases to be globally defined in the presence of a string. When continuous rather than discrete symmetries are involved, a variety of fascinating and as yet poorly understood dynamical effects occur. Perhaps the most striking is a new form of string superconductivity, that exists for purely topological reasons, and is not well modeled by regarding the string as a superconducting wire. 8 refs., 2 figs.
Quantized Topological Terms in Weakly Coupled Gauge Theories and Their Connection to Symmetry Protected Topological Phases

Abstract:We consider a weakly coupled gauge theory where charged particles all have large gaps (ie no Higgs condensation to break the gauge "symmetry") and the field strength fluctuates only weakly. We ask what kind of topological terms can be added to the Lagrangian of such a weakly coupled gauge theory. In this paper, we systematically construct quantized topological terms which are generalization of the Chern-Simons terms and F∧ F terms, in space-time dimensions d and for any gauge groups (continuous or discrete), using each element of the topological cohomology classes H^d+1(BG,) on the classifying space BG of the gauge group G. In 3d or for finite gauge groups above 3d, the weakly coupled gauge theories are gapped. So our results on topological terms can be viewed as a systematic construction of gapped topologically ordered phases of weakly coupled gauge theories. In other cases, the weakly coupled gauge theories are gapless. So our results can be viewed as an attempt to systematically construct different gapless phases of weakly coupled gauge theories. Amazingly, the bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases with a finite on-site symmetry group G are also classified by the same H^d+1(BG,). (SPT phases are gapped quantum phases with a symmetry and trivial topological order.) In this paper, we show an explicit duality relation between topological gauge theories with the quantized topological terms and the bosonic SPT phases, for any finite group G and in any dimensions; a result first obtained by Levin and Gu. We also study the relation between topological lattice gauge theory and the string-net states with non-trivial topological order and no symmetry.
On topology changes in quantum field theory and quantum gravity

Abstract:Two singularity theorems can be proven if one attempts to let a Lorentzian cobordism interpolate between two topologically distinct manifolds. On the other hand, Cartier and DeWitt-Morette have given a rigorous definition for quantum field theories (qfts) by means of path integrals. This article uses their results to study whether qfts can be made compatible with topology changes. We show that path integrals over metrics need a finite norm for the latter and for degenerate metrics, this problem can sometimes be resolved with tetrads. We prove that already in the neighborhood of some cuspidal singularities, difficulties can arise to define certain qfts. On the other hand, we show that simple qfts can be defined around conical singularities that result from a topology change in a simple setup. We argue that the ground state of many theories of quantum gravity will imply a small cosmological constant and, during the expansion of the universe, will cause frequent topology changes. Unfortunately, it is difficult to describe the transition amplitudes consistently due to the aforementioned problems. We argue that one needs to describe qfts by stochastic differential equations, and in the case of gravity, by Regge calculus in order to resolve this problem.

Abstract:These are the lecture notes of a set of lectures delivered at the 1995 Trieste summer school in June. I review some recent work on duality in four dimensional Maxwell theory on arbitrary four manifolds, as well as a new set of topological invariants known as the Seiberg-Witten invariants. Much of the necessary background material is given, including a crash course in topological field theory, cohomology of manifolds, topological gauge theory and the rudiments of four manifold theory. My main hope is to wet the readers appetite, so that he or she will wish to read the original works and perhaps to enter this field.

Abstract:Topology and generalized symmetries in the $SU(N)/\mathbb{Z}_N$ gauge theory are considered in the continuum and the lattice. Starting from the $SU(N)$ gauge theory with the 't~Hooft twisted boundary condition, we give a simpler explanation of the van~Baal's proof on the fractionality of the topological charge. This description is applicable to both continuum and lattice by using the generalized Lüscher's construction of topology on the lattice. Thus we can recover the $SU(N)/\mathbb{Z}_N$ principal bundle from lattice $SU(N)$ gauge fields being subject to the $\mathbb{Z}_N$-relaxed cocycle condition. We explicitly demonstrate the fractional topological charge, and verify an equivalence with other constructions reported recently based on different ideas. Gauging the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ $1$-form center symmetry enables lattice gauge theories to couple with the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ $2$-form gauge field as a simple lattice integer field, and to reproduce the Kapustin--Seiberg prescription in the continuum limit. Our construction is also applied to analyzing the higher-group structure in the $SU(N)$ gauge theory with the instanton-sum modification.

Abstract:It will be described how to uniquely fix the gauge using Coulomb gauge fixing, avoiding the problem of Gribov copies. The fundamental modular domain, which represents a one-to-one representation of the set of gauge invariant degrees of freedom, is a bounded convex subset of the trans- verse gauge fields. Boundary identifications are the only remnants of the Gribov copies, and carry all the information about the topology of the Yang-Mills configuration space. Conversely, the known topology can be shown to imply that (on a set of measure zero on the boundary) some points of the boundary coincide with the Gribov horizon. For the low-lying energies, wavefunctionals can be shown to spread out "across" certain parts of these boundaries. This is how the topology of Yang-Mills configuration space has an essential influence on the low-lying spectrum, in a situation where these non- perturbative effects are not exponentially suppressed. This write-up is a short summary, with adequate references, where details on most of the material I have presented can be found. However, not published before, is a new observation concerning Henyey's gauge copies.

Abstract:In $4$-dimensional pure compact $U(1)$ lattice gauge theory, we analyse topological aspects of the dynamics of monopoles across the deconfinement phase transition. We do this using tools from Topological Data Analysis (TDA). We demonstrate that observables constructed from the zeroth and first homology groups of monopole current networks may be used to quantitatively and robustly locate the critical inverse coupling $\beta_{c}$ through finite-size scaling. Our method provides a mathematically robust framework for the characterisation of topological invariants related to monopole currents, putting on firmer ground earlier investigations. Moreover, our approach can be generalised to the study of Abelian monopoles in non-Abelian gauge theories.

Abstract:We study the quantized topological terms in a weak-coupling gauge theory with gauge group G(g) and a global symmetry G(s) in d space-time dimensions. We show that the quantized topological terms are classified by a pair (G,nu(d)), where G is an extension of G(s) by G(g) and nu(d) an element in group cohomology H-d(G,R/Z). When d = 3 and/or when G(g) is finite, the weak-coupling gauge theories with quantized topological terms describe gapped symmetry enriched topological (SET) phases (i.e., gapped long-range-entangled phases with symmetry). Thus, those SET phases are classified by H-d(G, R/Z), where G/G(g) = G(s). We also apply our theory to a simple case G(s) = G(g) = Z(2), which leads to 12 different SET phases in 2 + 1 dimensions [(2 + 1)D], where quasiparticles have different patterns of fractional G(s) = Z(2) quantum numbers and fractional statistics. If the weak-coupling gauge theories are gapless, then the different quantized topological terms may describe different gapless phases of the gauge theories with a symmetry G(s), which may lead to different fractionalizations of G(s) quantum numbers and different fractional statistics [if in (2 + 1)D]. Excitations in the Higher Lattice Gauge Theory Model for Topological Phases I: Overview

Abstract:In this series of papers, we study a Hamiltonian model for 3+1d topological phases, based on a generalisation of lattice gauge theory known as "higher lattice gauge theory". Higher lattice gauge theory has so called "2-gauge fields" describing the parallel transport of lines, just as ordinary gauge fields describe the parallel transport of points. In the Hamiltonian model this is represented by having labels on the plaquettes of the lattice, as well as the edges. In this paper we summarize our findings in an accessible manner, with more detailed results and proofs to be presented in the other papers in the series. The Hamiltonian model supports both point-like and loop-like excitations, with non-trivial braiding between these excitations. We explicitly construct operators to produce and move these excitations, and use these to find the loop-loop and point-loop braiding relations. These creation operators also reveal that some of the excitations are confined, costing energy to separate. This is discussed in the context of condensation/confinement transitions between different cases of this model. We also discuss the topological charges of the model and use explicit measurement operators to re-derive a relationship between the number of charges measured by a 2-torus and the ground-state degeneracy of the model on the 3-torus. From these measurement operators, we can see that the ground state degeneracy on the 3-torus is related to the number of types of linked loop-like excitations.

Abstract:In these lecture notes we will try to give an introduction to the use of the mathematics of fibre bundles in the understanding of some global aspects of gauge theories, such as monopoles and instantons. They are primarily aimed at beginning PhD students. First, we will briefly review the concept of a fibre bundle and define the notion of a connection and its curvature on a principal bundle. Then we will introduce some ideas from topology such as homotopy, topological degree and characteristic classes. Finally, we will apply these notions to the bundle setup corresponding to monopoles and instantons. We will end with some remarks on index theorems and their applications and some hints towards a bigger picture.
Topological Gauge Theories with Sixteen Supercharges: Higher $A_\infty$-categorification of Floer Homologies

Abstract:This work is a sequel to [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2410.18575" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2410.18575">arXiv:2410.18575</a>], and a third and final installment of the program initiated in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2311.18302" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.18302">arXiv:2311.18302</a>]. We will show how, via a 3d gauged Landau-Ginzburg model interpretation of certain topologically-twisted 5d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ and 8d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ gauge theories, one can derive novel Fueter type $A_{\infty}$-2-categories that 2-categorify the 3d-Haydys-Witten, Haydys-Witten, and holomorphic Donaldson-Thomas Floer homology of two, four, and five-manifolds, respectively. Via a 2d gauged Landau-Ginzburg model interpretation of the aforementioned twisted gauge theories, these Fueter type $A_{\infty}$-2-categories can be shown to be equivalent to corresponding Fukaya-Seidel type $A_{\infty}$-categories. Together with previous results from [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2410.18575" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2410.18575">arXiv:2410.18575</a>] and [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2311.18302" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.18302">arXiv:2311.18302</a>], we will furnish purely physical proofs and generalizations of the mathematical conjectures by Bousseau [3] and Doan-Rezchikov [4].

Abstract:Gauge symmetries play a central role, both in the mathematical foundations as well as the conceptual construction of modern (particle) physics theories. However, it is yet unclear whether they form a necessary component of theories, or whether they can be eliminated. It is also unclear whether they are merely an auxiliary tool to simplify (and possibly localize) calculations or whether they contain independent information. Therefore their status, both in physics and philosophy of physics, remains to be fully clarified. In this overview we review the current state of affairs on both the philosophy and the physics side. In particular, we focus on the circumstances in which the restriction of gauge theories to gauge invariant information on an observable level is warranted, using the Brout-Englert-Higgs theory as an example of particular current importance. Finally, we determine a set of yet to be answered questions to clarify the status of gauge symmetries.
