Abstract:In this paper, a study of the electrocatalytic oxidation of salicylic acid (SA) at graphene oxide/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (GO/MWCNTs) modified electrode is presented. Compared to GO or MWCNTs electrodes, the electro- oxidation of SA significantly enhanced at the GO/MWCNTs electrode, accounting for the synergistic effect of MWCNTs and GO, in which MWCNTs increased the electronic conductivity and GO provided a large specific surface area to increase the loading amount of SA. Then the GO/MWCNTs electrode was applied for the electrochemical determination of SA in PBS at pH 6.5. Under the optimized conditions, the oxidation peak current was proportional to SA concentration in the range of 0.08 mu M to 150 mu M with a detection limit of 0.03 mu M (S/N = 3). Moreover, the modified electrode showed high selectivity, good stability and reproducibility.

Abstract:Salicylic acid (SA) is effective in the treatment of coronary heart disease. In this study, a novel PEC sensor was prepared to specifically detect SA, and copper sulfide-layered double hydroxide/reduced graphene oxide (CuS-LDH/rGO) with visible light activity was chosen as the identification element and photoactive material. The photocurrent response of CuS-LDH/rGO shows linear relationship with SA concentration over a range of 1–80 μM and 160–5760 μM, with a low limit of detection (LOD) (S/N=3) of 0.35 μM. Therefore, the novel PEC-sensing strategy proposed in this study represents an ultra-sensitive method with high selectivity and stability for the detection of SA.

Abstract:Salicylic acid is an important chemical used in various industries including pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and agriculture. It is a key phytohormone responsible for initiating and regulating defense mechanisms against biotic as well as environmental stress in plants. It is a major component of Aspirin, a common anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic and analgesic drug whose overusage and mis-dosage can lead to various health problems in humans. In this work, a novel electro-reduced graphene oxide modified screen printed carbon electrode electrochemical sensor has been presented for the detection of salicylic acid based on its electro-oxidation. The proposed device offers an inexpensive, sensitive, selective, quick responding, rapid and easy to fabricate sensor to salicylic acid measurement with excellent performance. The proposed sensor is capable of measuring concentrations from 2 to 512 µM with a maximum sensitivity of 600 µA/mM/cm2 with high (piece-wise) linearity, and was used to determine salicylic acid level in fresh orange juice with 99% accuracy.
Facile Synthesis of Hollow Fe3O4-rGO Nanocomposites for the Electrochemical Detection of Acetaminophen

Abstract:Acetaminophen (AC) is one of the most popular pharmacologically active substances used as an analgesic and antipyretic drug. Herein, a new type of hollow Fe3O4-rGO/GCE electrode was prepared for electrochemical detection of AC through a three-step approach involving a solvothermal method for the synthesis of hollow Fe3O4 and the chemical reduction of graphene oxide (GO) for reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and Fe3O4-rGO nanocomposites modified on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface. The as-prepared Fe3O4-rGO nanocomposites were characterized using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and a magnetic measurement system (SQUID-VSM). The magnetic Fe3O4-rGO/GCE electrodes were employed for the electrochemical detection of AC using cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and square wave voltammetry (SWV) and exhibited an ultra-high selectivity and accuracy, a low detection limit of 0.11 µmol/L with a wider linear range from 5 × 10-7 to 10-4 mol/L, and high recovery between 100.52% and 101.43%. The obtained Fe3O4-rGO-modified GCE displays great practical significance for the detection of AC in drug analysis.

Abstract:Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter for organisms and affects their function, so monitoring and detecting dopamine levels is essential. Sensitivity and selectivity of electrochemical sensors for the detection of dopamine usually relies on hybrid nanocomposites. In this context, we designed a micro-regionally restricted hybrid nanocomposite by modulating the micro-nano structure. Using functional groups on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) to restrict the random growth of tungsten disulfide nanosheets, we obtained a 2D layered material with bidirectional structural support to achieve high specific surface and high activity for application in robust and novel dopamine electrochemical sensors. A facile electrochemical sensor for dopamine detection was fabricated by modifying a screen-printed carbon electrode with the nanocomposite. The sensor exhibits excellent performance of dopamine detection in the wide range of 1 μmol/L100 μmol/L with a detection limit of 0.2 μmol/L and a high sensitivity of 0.56 μA/μmol/L. The optimized sensor shows a good selectivity, satisfactory long-term stability and reproducibility towards DA and a separation of peak potential of 142 mV with uric acid. In addition, the prepared sensor provides favorable recovery in human serum and artificial cerebrospinal solution (aSCF), indicating great potentials in electrochemical detection and biological sensing applications.

Abstract:In this study, a new matrix based on a molybdenum disulfide-reduced graphene oxide hybrid (MoS2-rGO) was prepared and characterized. Modification of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with MoS2-rGO (MG) using drop casting allowed for the selective analysis of folic acid in the presence of a variety of interference species with a limit of detection of 10nM, a linear range between 0.01μM and 100μM with a sensitivity of 14µAµM(-1). In addition, the analytical performance of the proposed sensor was successfully conducted for the determination of folic acid in human serum samples, making MG-GC electrodes promising interfaces for bio-electrochemical applications.

Abstract:A novel 3D prickly ball-like Co–La oxides/reduced graphene oxide composite (Co–La oxides/rGO) has been successfully synthesized by a facile thermal evaporation method. Co–La oxides were hierarchical spiny globular structure made up of numerous radially-grown nanowires with the size of about 50 nm in width. Some of the nanowires grow vertically on the surface of rGO nanosheets. GO was thermally reduced to rGO. XPS data showed that the Co3+, Co2+ and La3+ existed in the prepared samples. The possible growth mechanism was tentatively proposed. The application of the 3D prickly ball-like Co–La oxides/rGO as electrode-modified material for electrochemical oxidation of l-cysteine was studied. The prepared prickly ball-like Co–La oxides/rGO modified electrode expressed prominent electrocatalytic ability for the electrochemical oxidation of l-cysteine. Under optimum experimental conditions, the current response of l-cysteine were linear with its concentration in the range of 1.0–888.0 μM with a low detection limit of 0.1 μM (S/N = 3). The sensor was used to evaluate its application for the detection of l-cysteine in the real samples.

Abstract:Although polysaccharide-based carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are widely used in the field of detection, most of the CQDs-based sensors only take advantage of their optical properties. In this work, considering the selectivity to target substance and reducibility of xylan-based CQDs, a high-sensitive sensor based on greenly synthesized CQDs-based nanocomposite was fabricated for dopamine (DA) detection. First, the CQDs prepared from xylan were used as the reductant and stabilizer to quickly synthesize silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and then Ag@CQDs-rGO nanocomposite was obtained and loaded on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to fabricate electrochemical sensor. The electrochemical sensing of DA is of great significance for studying and treating neurochemical diseases due to its potential feasibility in diagnostics. Under optimal conditions, the linear range for monitoring DA was from 0.1 to 300 μM with a limit of detection of 1.59 nM (S/N = 3). Finally, this sensor was successfully applied to detect DA in dopamine hydrochloride injection and bovine serum solution samples. The proposed strategy may broaden the application of polysaccharide-based CQDs and this sensor may provide a discriminative and sensitive analytical platform for DA clinical diagnostics and drug screening.

Abstract:Catechol, a polyphenolic molecule and significant organic chemical intermediate, is a highly dangerous environmental contaminant due to its unpredictable nature and potential harm to both humans and the environment. This study presents the development of Sn MOF@rGO-650, identified as a hollow cube by SEM and TEM, created by carbonizing rGO on the surface of Sn MOF after in situ encapsulation. The Sn MOF@rGO-650 modified glassy carbon electrode was successfully constructed for the electrochemical detection of catechol. Under optimal conditions, the sensor exhibited a detection limit of 33 nM, a linear range of 0.20 μM-28 μM, and good long-term stability and reproducibility. This work proves for the first time that Sn MOF@rGO-650 composites can effectively detect catechol in real environmental water samples, achieving recoveries between 95.7 % and 104.8 %, and is validated in UV spectroscopy, which highlights its potential for practical applications.

Abstract:Hydroxyl radical (•OH) detection is pivotal in medicine, biochemistry and environmental chemistry. Yet, electrochemical method-specific detection is challenging because of hydroxyl radicals' high reactivity and short half-life. In this study, we aimed to modify the electrode surface with a specific recognition probe for •OH. To achieve this, we conducted a one-step hydrothermal process to fabricate a CoZnMOF bimetallic organic framework directly onto conductive graphite paper (Gp). Subsequently, we introduced salicylic acid (SA) and methylene blue (MB), which easily penetrated the pores of CoZnMOF. By selectively capturing •OH by SA and leveraging the electrochemical signal generated by the reaction product, we successfully developed an electrochemical sensor Gp/CoZnMOF/SA + MB. The prepared sensor exhibited a good linear relationship with •OH concentrations ranging from 1.25 to 1200 nM, with a detection limit of 0.2 nM. Additionally, the sensor demonstrated excellent reproducibility and accuracy due to the incorporation of an internal reference. It exhibited remarkable selectivity for •OH detection, unaffected by other electrochemically active substances. The establishment of this sensor provides a way to construct MOF-modified sensors for the selective detection of other reactive oxygen species (ROS), offering a valuable experimental basis for ROS-related disease research and environmental safety investigations.

Abstract:Acetaminophen (ACP), a common analgesic and antipyretic medication, can harm the liver when overdosed and its metabolites can contaminate the environment, so it is necessary to monitor the concentration precisely and reliably. In this work, we successfully synthesized cerium oxide/nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (CeO2/N-rGO) composite nanomaterials using a one-step hydrothermal method. Using composite nanomaterials, we created an electrochemical sensing detection platform for ACP detection. The synthesized materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The constructed electrochemical sensor exhibits good ACP detection ability under the synergistic effect of CeO2 and N-rGO. Under optimal experimental conditions, the sensor displayed a linear range for the detection of ACP of 1~200 μM and the lowest detection limit of 0.79 μM, exhibiting outstanding selectivity, stability, and repeatability. Furthermore, the sensor was effectively applied to detect ACP in tap water samples, which offers a wide range of possible applications in actual sample testing.

Abstract:In this paper, an electrochemical sensor for sensitive and convenient determination of salicylic acid (SA) was constructed using well-aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes as electrode material. Compared to the glassy carbon electrode, the electro-oxidation of SA significantly enhanced at the multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) electrode. The MWCNT electrode shows a sensitivity of 59.25 μA mM−1, a low detection limit of 0.8 × 10−6 M and a good response linear range with SA concentration from 2.0 × 10−6 to 3.0 × 10−3 M. In addition, acetylsalicylic acid was determined indirectly after hydrolysis to SA and acetic acid, which simplified the detection process. The mechanism of electrochemical oxidation of SA at the MWCNT electrode is also discussed.

Abstract:Accurately detecting low concentrations (ppm levels) of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is paramount for maintaining production process stability and safeguarding human health. In this work, graphene electrodes were prepared on flexible PI films by laser direct writing technique, and rGO/ZnO was prepared by one-step hydrothermal method, which was coated on the surface of graphene electrodes by drop-coating method, and finally, a gas sensor for detecting H 2 S was obtained. Performance tests showed that all rGO/ZnO sensors responded effectively to 10 ppm H 2 S at 140 °C. Notably, the 10% rGO/ZnO sensor exhibited responses of 1.2 at 140 °C and 1.53 at 180 °C. They displayed qualities of commendable selectivity, rapid response, and recovery times. Furthermore, the study delves into the mechanism of rGO/ZnO on H 2 S gas and explains the electron transfer between the rGO/ZnO surface and H 2 S by calculations combined with spin-polarized density-functional theory (DFT). The experimental findings represent a positive contribution to advancing gas sensors tailored for ppm-level H 2 S detection.

A high flexibility all-solid contact sulfide selective electrode using a graphene transducer

Abstract:In this paper, a novel high flexibility all-solid contact ion selective electrode (ASC-ISE) based on reduced graphene sheets (RGSs) as the ion-to-electron transducer was developed for rapid detection of sulfide. A graphene layer was firstly electrodeposited on a flexible silver wire by direct reduction of graphene oxide, and nanostructured Ag2S was then prepared as the selective membrane by electrodeposition. Scanning electrochemical microscopy was performed for the characterization of the morphological properties of the RGSs and Ag2S membranes. The evaluation of the analytical performances, such as the linear range, selectivity, stability, and practical application, of the proposed ASC-ISEs for the rapid detection of sulfide was performed. The results showed that, the ASC-ISEs exhibited a linear relationship between the obtained potential signal and sulfide concentration in the range of 0.50 μM to 1.0 mM, with a detection limit of 0.18 μM. Moreover, the ASC-ISEs showed good selectivity towards sulfide over other common interfering ions, and maintained a stable electrochemical response over 7 days. These results demonstrated that graphene was a promising material as the ion-to-electron transducer layer in the development of ASC-ISEs for sulfide detection, and the results of practical applications in tap water and seawater samples showed that the ASC-ISEs held significant promise in a broad range of applications.
Sensitive electrochemical sensing of carbosulfan in food products on laser reduced graphene oxide sensor decorated with silver nanoparticles

Abstract:A simple, low-cost, eco-friendly, highly sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on laser reduced graphene oxide (LrGO) decorated with silver nanoparticles (LrGO/AgNPs) on a recycled green polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate was fabricated for the detection of carbosulfan in food products. An inexpensive disposable PET substrate was used to fabricate the flexible sensor using eco-friendly laser printing. Electrochemical investigations and surface characterization of sensor surfaces were performed with cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Raman spectroscopy (RS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Under the optimum conditions, the LrGO/AgNPs sensor showed a well-developed CV peak current with a good linear dynamic range (LDR) from 0.01 to 10 mg·kg −1 for the determination of carbosulfan with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.005 mg·kg −1 . The LrGO/AgNPs sensor was successfully applied for CV determination of carbosulfan in food products (apples, oranges and basmati rice) with a promising recovery from 90 % to 105 % and relative standard deviations (RSD) lower than 5 %. The novel sensor showed remarkable sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility, and long-term stability. Therefore, this study showed that the fabricated electrochemical LrGO/AgNPs sensor is an excellent tool for the determination of carbosulfan in food products.

3D-printed reduced graphene oxide/polylactic acid electrodes: A new prototyped platform for sensing and biosensing applications

Abstract:This work presents a novel procedure involving the sequential chemical treatment to generate reduced graphene oxide (rGO) within 3D-printed polylactic acid (PLA) electrodes and their potential applications for sensing and biosensing. A new configuration of a compact all-3D-printed electrochemical device containing the three electrodes is presented, in which the working electrode was treated to generate rGO within PLA (rGO-PLA) after treatment within NaBH4. The rGO-PLA electrodes presented a notable current increase for the redox probe ferrocene-methanol in comparison with the same surface treated by dimethylformamide immersion. Also, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopic data that presented the lowest resistance to electron transfer for the proposed electrode. The electrochemical experiments were in accordance with Raman spectra and surface roughness obtained by atomic force microscopy images. As proofs-of-concept, the rGO-PLA electrode was applied for serotonin determination in synthetic urine using differential-pulse voltammetry with a limit of detection of 0.032 μmol L-1. Also, the second application involved the fabrication of a tyrosinase-based biosensor capable of determining catechol in natural water samples with a limit of detection of 0.26 μmol L-1. Based on both applications, the 3D-printed rGO-PLA showed to be an excellent platform for sensing and biosensing purposes.

Abstract:Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is crucial in diabetes management. Commonly used procedures may be invasive and can lead to cross-infection and inflammation. Therefore, a safe, non-invasive blood glucose-monitoring technology is needed. Herein, a 3D reduced graphene oxide (rGO) electrode was modified with MXene (Ti 3 C 2 ) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to construct a non-invasive, saliva glucose detection electrode. The Au/rGO-Ti 3 C 2 electrode exhibited good detection performance for glucose concentrations in the range of 10 μM–21 mM at a working potential of 0.6 V, with a detection limit of 3.1 μM glucose, and a sensitivity of 355 μA mM −1 cm −2 . The Au/rGO-Ti 3 C 2 electrode showed almost no response to the addition of interfering substances, and no effect was observed upon subsequent glucose detection. The sensor could detect glucose in artificial saliva and saliva supernatant. The modified electrode showed a significant response to low glucose concentrations, even at 10 μM. These results indicate the suitability of the Au/rGO-Ti 3 C 2 electrode for saliva glucose detection. The electrode developed in this study has great potential in improving the efficiency of diabetes monitoring through pain-free, non-invasive glucose detection in saliva.

Abstract:A selective detection strategy for salicylic acid (SA) based on the electrosorption/electrodesorption process using an electrochemically controlled solid phase extraction (EC-SPME) configuration is presented. We used conducting polymer polypyrrole (PPy) bearing the anionic dopant nitrate (PPy/nitrate) as a sorbent element for the extraction of SA in plasma and urine samples. The vertically grown nanosheets conducting film was directly synthesized by cyclic voltammetry method on a rod-shaped stainless steel electrode. The prepared electrode was employed for selective electrosorption of SA from sample solutions by applying positive potential and following its successive electrodesorption by the use of negative potential. Several parameters like synthesis conditions, anion dopant effect, potential and time of electrosorption/electrodesorption, and exchange anion type were explored to achieve the optimal conditions. The morphology of nanostructure PPy/nitrate sorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrosorption of SA was demonstrated by using FT-IR and fluorescence microscopic imaging. The obtained linear dynamic range (LDR), the limit of detection (LOD), and RSD% of SA determination by fluorescence spectrometry were 5-100 nanomol L-1, 1.4 nanomol L-1 and 4.9 (n = 5), respectively. The suggested technique was successfully applied for the quantification and determination of trace amounts of SA in biomedical samples without any additional treatment.

Abstract:The advancements in electrode materials with high efficiency has been prioritized to effectively monitor the presence of harmful pesticides concerning the environment. In such a way, we hydrothermally constructed a hybrid AgWO4-rGO nanocomposites for the rapid electrochemical detection of crisquat (CQT). The structural, compositional, morphological and topographical characterization for AgWO4-rGO nanocomposites is thoroughly performed to understand its electrocatalytic properties. The AgWO4-rGO nanocomposites are used as an electrode enhancer (4/GCE) for the electrochemical investigations towards CQT detection. The results indicated that the 4/GCE possessed an excellent catalytic activity with a wide linear detection range 1–1108 μM coupled with an ultrasensitive limit of detection (LOD) 0.0661 μM for electrochemical CQT detection. The 4/GCE CQT sensor also expressed remarkable sensitivity of 0.6306 μAμM−1cm−2 in addition to good selectivity and reproducibility. Furthermore, the commercial CQT, river water, tap water and washed vegetable water are used as a representative for real world analysis using 4/GCE and results are highly appreciable for the real time CQT detection. Our work proposes a novel hybrid 4 nanocomposites reinforced electrodes for ultra-trace level CQT detection with good reliability and can be advocated for real time detection of pesticides.
