Abstract:We calculate mod-p cohomology of extended powers, and their group completions which are free infinite loop spaces. We consider the cohomology of all extended powers of a space together and identify a Hopf ring structure with divided powers within which cup product structure is more readily computable than on its own. We build on our previous calculations of cohomology of symmetric groups, which are the cohomology of extended powers of a point, the well-known calculation of homology, and new results on cohomology of symmetric groups with coefficients in the sign representation. We then use this framework to understand cohomology rings of related spaces such as infinite extended powers and free infinite loop spaces. v2 typo in gradings of Theorem 2.35 corrected.

Abstract:We establish a dimension formula involving a number of parameters for the mod 2 cohomology of finite index subgroups in the Bianchi groups (SL<span class="InlineEquation">$_2$</span> groups over the ring of integers in an imaginary quadratic number field). The proof of our formula involves an analysis of the equivariant spectral sequence, combined with torsion subcomplex reduction. We also provide an algorithm to compute a Ford domain for congruence subgroups in the Bianchi groups from which the parameters in our formula can be explicitly computed.

An algebraic criterion for the vanishing of bounded cohomology

Abstract:We prove the vanishing of bounded cohomology with separable dual coefficients for many groups of interest in geometry, dynamics, and algebra. These include compactly supported structure-preserving diffeomorphism groups of certain manifolds; the group of interval exchange transformations of the half line; piecewise linear and piecewise projective groups of the line, giving strong answers to questions of Calegari and Navas; direct limit linear groups of relevance in algebraic K-theory, thereby answering a question by Kastenholz and Sroka and a question of two of the authors and Löh; and certain subgroups of big mapping class groups, such as the stable braid group and the stable mapping class group, proving a conjecture of Bowden. Moreover, we prove that in the recently introduced framework of enumerated groups, the generic group has vanishing bounded cohomology with separable dual coefficients. At the heart of our approach is an elementary algebraic criterion called the commuting cyclic conjugates condition that is readily verifiable for the aforementioned large classes of groups.

Abstract:The study of rings and modules with homological criteria is a cornerstone of commutative algebra. Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with identity (not necessarily local) and $\frak a$ a proper ideal of $R$. In this paper, a relative analogue of the theory of homological rings and modules is developed. We introduce the notions of $\frak a$-relative regular, $\frak a$-relative complete intersection, and $\frak a$-relative Gorenstein rings and modules. We extend some classical results by demonstrating some interactions between these types of rings and modules.

Cohomology rings of the moduli of one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study on the cohomology rings of the moduli stack $\mathfrak{M}_{d,\chi}$ of semistable one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane. We introduce a set of tautological relations of geometric origin, including Mumford-type relations, and prove that their ideal is generated by certain primitive relations via the Virasoro operators. Using BPS integrality and the computational efficiency of Virasoro operators, we show that our geometric relations completely determine the cohomology rings of the moduli stacks up to degree 5. As an application, we verify the refined Gopakumar--Vafa/Pandharipande--Thomas correspondence for local $\mathbb{P}^2$ in degree 5. Furthermore, we propose a substantially strengthened version of the $P=C$ conjecture, originally introduced by Shen and two of the authors. This can be viewed as an analogue of the $P=W$ conjecture in a compact and Fano setting.

Abstract:It is a long-established and heavily-used fact that the integral cohomology ring of the Deligne-Mumford moduli space of (complex) rational curves is the polynomial ring on the boundary divisors modulo the ideal generated by the obvious geometric relations between them. We show that the rational cohomology ring of the Deligne-Mumford moduli space of real rational curves with conjugate marked points only is the polynomial ring on certain (``complex") boundary divisors and real boundary hypersurfaces modulo the ideal generated by the obvious geometric relations between them and the geometric relation in positive dimension and codimension identified in a previous paper.

Profinite completions of products

Abstract:A source of difficulty in profinite homotopy theory is that the profinite completion functor does not preserve finite products. In this note, we provide a new, checkable criterion on prospaces $X$ and $Y$ that guarantees that the profinite completion of $X\times Y$ agrees with the product of the profinite completions of $X$ and $Y$. Using this criterion, we show that profinite completion preserves products of étale homotopy types of qcqs schemes. This fills a gap in Chough's proof of the Künneth formula for the étale homotopy type of a product of proper schemes over a separably closed field.

Abstract:Huayi Chen introduces the notion of an approximable graded algebra, which he uses to prove a Fujita-type theorem in the arithmetic setting, and asked if any such algebra is the graded ring of a big line bundle on a projective variety. This was proved to be false in a previous paper of the author's, who subsequently proved that any such algebra is associated to an infinite Weil divisor. In this paper, we show that over the complex numbers, this infinite Weil divisor necessarily has finite cohomology class.

Abstract:We define a congruence module $\Psi_A(M)$ associated to a surjective $\mathcal O$-algebra morphism $\lambda\colon A \to \mathcal{O}$, with $\mathcal{O}$ a discrete valuation ring, $A$ a complete noetherian local $\mathcal{O}$-algebra regular at $\mathfrak{p}$, the kernel of $\lambda$, and $M$ a finitely generated $A$-module. We establish a numerical criterion for $M$ to have a free direct summand over $A$ of positive rank. It is in terms of the lengths of $\Psi_A(M)$ and the torsion part of $\mathfrak{p}/\mathfrak{p}^2$. It generalizes results of Wiles, Lenstra, and Diamond, that deal with the case when the codimension of $\mathfrak{p}$ is zero. Number theoretic applications include integral (non-minimal) $R=\mathbb T$ theorems in situations of positive defect conditional on certain standard conjectures. Here $R$ is a deformation ring parametrizing certain Galois representations and $\mathbb T$ is a Hecke algebra. An example is a modularity lifting for 2-dimensional $\ell$-adic Galois representations over an imaginary quadratic field. The proofs combine our commutative algebra results with a generalization due to Calegari and Geraghty of the patching method of Wiles and Taylor--Wiles and level raising arguments that go back to Ribet. The results provide new evidence in favor of the intriguing, and as yet fledgling, torsion analog of the classical Langlands correspondence. We also prove unconditional integral $R=\mathbb T$ results for Hecke algebras $\mathbb T$ acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves over $\mathbb Q$. This leads to a torsion Jacquet--Langlands correspondence comparing integral Hecke algebras acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves and modular curves. In this case the cohomology has abundant torsion and so our correspondence cannot be deduced by means of the classical Jacquet--Langlands correspondence.

Approximations by maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules

Abstract:Auslander and Buchweitz have proved that every finitely generated module over a Cohen-Macaulay (CM) ring with a dualizing module admits a so-called maximal CM approximation. In terms of relative homological algebra, this means that every finitely generated module has a special maximal CM precover. In this paper, we prove the existence of special maximal CM preenvelopes and, in the case where the ground ring is henselian, of maximal CM envelopes. We also characterize the rings over which every finitely generated module has a maximal CM envelope with the unique lifting property. Finally, we show that cosyzygies with respect to the class of maximal CM modules must eventually be maximal CM, and we compute some examples.

Abstract:In a previous paper, we constructed a category of (phi, Gamma)-modules associated to any adic space over Q_p with the property that the etale (phi, Gamma)-modules correspond to etale Q_p-local systems; these involve sheaves of period rings for Scholzeu0027s pro-etale topology. In this paper, we first extend Kiehlu0027s theory of coherent sheaves on rigid analytic spaces to a theory of pseudocoherent sheaves on adic spaces, then construct a corresponding theory of pseudocoherent (phi, Gamma)-modules. We then relate these objects to a more explicit construction in case the space comes equipped with a suitable infinite etale cover; in this case, one can decomplete the period sheaves and establish an analogue of the theorem of Cherbonnier-Colmez on the overconvergence of p-adic Galois representations. As an application, we show that relative (phi, Gamma)-modules in our sense coincide with the relative (phi, Gamma)-modules constructed by Andreatta and Brinon in the geometric setting where the latter can be constructed. As another application, we establish that the category of pseudocoherent (phi, Gamma)-modules on an arbitrary rigid analytic space over a p-adic field is abelian, satisfies the ascending chain condition, and is stable under various natural derived functors (including Hom, tensor product, and pullback). Applications to the etale cohomology of pro-etale local systems will be given in a subsequent paper.

Abstract:Let $\hat{R}$ be the $I$-adic completion of a commutative ring $R$ with respect to a finitely generated ideal $I$. We give a necessary and sufficient criterion for the category of perfect complexes over $\hat{R}$ to be equivalent to the subcategory of dualizable objects in the derived category of $I$-complete complexes of $R$-modules. Our criterion is always satisfied when $R$ is noetherian. When specialized to $R$ local and noetherian and to $I$ the maximal ideal, our theorem recovers a recent result of Benson, Iyengar, Krause and Pevtsova.

Finiteness criteria for Gorenstein homological dimension and some invariants of groups

Abstract:In this paper, we study finiteness criteria for the Gorenstein homological dimension of groups over a commutative ring of finite weak Gorenstein global dimension and provide good estimations for the Gorenstein weak global dimension of group rings. As a result, we obtain Gorenstein analogues of well known properties in classical homological algebra over some large families of infinite groups. Moreover, we prove that over a commutative ring of finite weak Gorenstein global dimension, the Gorenstein cohomological dimension of a group $G$ bounds the Gorenstein homological dimension of $G$. Finally, we compare the generalized cohomological dimension and the generalized homological dimension of a group, defined by Ikenaga.

Abstract:We show that the modular symbol $(0,\infty)$, considered as an element of the dual of Emerton's completed cohomology, interpolates Kato's Euler system at classical points, and we deduce from this a factorisation of Beilinson-Kato's system as a product of two symbols $(0,\infty)$ (an algebraic analog of Rankin's method). The proof uses the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence for ${\mathbf GL}_2({\mathbf Q}_p)$ and Emerton's factorization of the completed cohomology of the tower of modular curves for which we provide a new proof resting upon the construction of a Kirillov model for the completed cohomology, and which we refine by imposing conditions at classical points; the existence of such a refinement is a manifestation of an analyticity property for $p$-adic periods of modular forms.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring and $I$ an ideal of $R$. Assume that for all integers $i$ the local cohomology module $H_I^i(R)$ is $I$-cofinite. Suppose that $R_\mathfrak{p}$ is a regular local ring for all prime ideals $\mathfrak{p}$ that do not contain $I$. In this paper, we prove that if the $I$-cofinite modules forms an abelian category, then for all finitely generated $R$-modules $M$ and all integers $i$, the local cohomology module $H_I^i(M)$ is $I$-cofinite.
