Abstract:We consider a class of metabelian groups first studied by Baumslag and Stammbach and we show that these groups are consistent with the Bieri-Groves conjecture which relates cohomological finiteness conditions to the Bieri-Neumann-Strebel sigma invariant.

Abstract:A group $\Gamma$ has separable cohomology if the profinite completion map $\iota \colon \Gamma \to \widehat{\Gamma}$ induces an isomorphism on cohomology with finite coefficient modules. In this article, cohomological separability is decided within the class of generalised Baumslag--Solitar groups, i.e. graphs of groups with infinite cyclic fibers. Equivalent conditions are given both explicitly in terms of the defining graph of groups and in terms of the induced topology on vertex groups. Restricted to the class of Baumslag--Solitar groups, we obtain a trichotomy of cohomological separability and cohomological dimension of the profinite completions. In particular, this yields examples of non-residually-finite one-relator groups which have separable cohomology, and examples which do not.

For finitely generated metabelian groups, classical commutative algebra, algebraic geometry and geometric group theory, especially the latter two subjects, can be brought to bear on their study. Abstract:We consider the equivariant Kasparov category associated to an étale groupoid, and by leveraging its triangulated structure we study its localization at the "weakly contractible" objects, extending previous work by R. Meyer and R. Nest. We prove the subcategory of weakly contractible objects is complementary to the localizing subcategory of projective objects, which are defined in terms of "compactly induced" algebras with respect to certain proper subgroupoids related to isotropy. The resulting "strong" Baum-Connes conjecture implies the classical one, and its formulation clarifies several permanence properties and other functorial statements. We present multiple applications, including consequences for the Universal Coefficient Theorem, a generalized "Going-Down" principle, injectivity results for groupoids that are amenable at infinity, the Baum-Connes conjecture for group bundles, and a result about the invariance of $K$-groups of twisted groupoid $C^*$-algebras under homotopy of twists.

Abstract:We prove the finiteness and compatibility with base change of the (phi,Gamma)-cohomology and the Iwasawa cohomology of arithmetic families of (phi,Gamma)-modules. Using this finiteness theorem, we show that a family of Galois representations that is densely pointwise refined in the sense of Mazur is actually trianguline as a family over a large subspace. In the case of the Coleman-Mazur eigencurve, we determine the behavior at all points.
Characterizing the Residual Finiteness of Conjugation Quandles on the Baumslag-Solitar Groups

Abstract:This article fully characterize the residual finiteness of conjugation quandles of the Baumslag-Solitar groups. The key difference between groups and their derived conjugation quandles is that many conjugation quandles are infinitely generated even when their underlying groups are finitely generated. Notably, we prove that the conjugation quandles of Baumslag-Solitar groups are always infinitely generated. Moreover, we show that if a conjugation quandle is Hopfian, then its underlying group is also Hopfian. From this, we identity the conditions for non-Hopfian conjugation quandles of Baumslag-Solitar groups.

Modules with finitely generated cohomology

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and $\mathsf{k}$ a field of characteristic $p$. It is conjectured in a paper of the first author and John Greenlees that the thick subcategory of the stable module category StMod$(\mathsf{k}G)$ consisting of modules whose cohomology is finitely generated over $\mathsf{H}^*(G,\mathsf{k})$ is generated by finite dimensional modules and modules with no cohomology. If the centraliser of every element of order $p$ in $G$ is $p$-nilpotent, this statement follows from previous work. Our purpose here is to prove this conjecture in two cases with non $p$-nilpotent centralisers. The groups involved are ${\mathbb Z}/3^r\times\Sigma_3$ ($r> 0$) in characteristic three and ${\mathbb Z}/2\times A_4$ in characteristic two. As a consequence, in these cases the bounded derived category of $C^*BG$ (cochains on $BG$ with coefficients in $\mathsf{k}$) is generated by $C^*BS$, where $S$ is a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$.

Abstract:We exhibit a finitely presented group whose second cohomology contains a weakly bounded, but not bounded, class. As an application, we disprove a long-standing conjecture of Gromov about bounded primitives of differential forms on universal covers of closed manifolds.

Abstract:We prove finiteness properties for groups of homeomorphisms that have finitely many "singular points", and we describe the normal structure of such groups. As an application, we prove that every countable abelian group can be embedded into a finitely presented simple group, verifying the Boone-Higman conjecture for countable abelian groups. Indeed, we describe a specific 2-generated, $\mathrm{F}_\infty$ simple group $V\mathcal{A}$ of homeomorphisms of the Cantor set that contains every countable abelian group. As a second application, we prove that if $G$ is a bounded automata group then the associated Röver-Nekrashevych groups $V_{d,r}G$ have type $\mathrm{F}_\infty$, verifying a conjecture of Nekrashevych for a large class of contracting self-similar groups. Among others, this result applies to Röver-Nekrashevych groups associated to Gupta-Sidki groups and the basilica group.

Abstract:Abstract This paper concerns locally finite 2‐complexes that are combinatorial models for the Baumslag–Solitar groups . We show that, in many cases, the locally compact group contains incommensurable uniform lattices. The lattices we construct also admit isomorphic Cayley graphs and are finitely presented, torsion‐free, and coherent.

Abstract:In this paper, we study finiteness criteria for the Gorenstein homological dimension of groups over a commutative ring of finite weak Gorenstein global dimension and provide good estimations for the Gorenstein weak global dimension of group rings. As a result, we obtain Gorenstein analogues of well known properties in classical homological algebra over some large families of infinite groups. Moreover, we prove that over a commutative ring of finite weak Gorenstein global dimension, the Gorenstein cohomological dimension of a group $G$ bounds the Gorenstein homological dimension of $G$. Finally, we compare the generalized cohomological dimension and the generalized homological dimension of a group, defined by Ikenaga.

Relative bounded cohomology on groups with contracting elements

Abstract:Let $G$ be a countable group acting properly on a metric space with contracting elements and $\{H_i:1\le i\le n\}$ be a finite collection of Morse subgroups in $G$. We prove that each $H_i$ has infinite index in $G$ if and only if the relative second bounded cohomology $H^{2}_b(G, \{H_i\}_{i=1}^n; \mathbb{R})$ is infinite-dimensional. In addition, we also prove that for any contracting element $g$, there exists $k>0$ such that $H^{2}_b(G, \langle \langle g^k\rangle \rangle; \mathbb{R})$ is infinite-dimensional. Our results generalize a theorem of Pagliantini-Rolli for finite-rank free groups and produce some new results on the (relative) second bounded cohomology of groups. Under the same conditions, we also prove a Gap Theorem stating that any $C$-contracting element $g$ in $G$ either has a power which is conjugate to its inverse, or else the stable commutator length of $g$ is at least equal to some constant $\tau=\tau(C)>0$. This generalizes the Gap Theorem obtained by Calegari-Fujiwara for hyperbolic groups and mapping class groups.

Gorenstein cohomological dimension and stable categories for groups

Abstract:First we study the Gorenstein cohomological dimension ${\rm Gcd}_RG$ of groups $G$ over coefficient rings $R$, under changes of groups and rings; a characterization for finiteness of ${\rm Gcd}_RG$ is given. Some results in literature obtained over the coefficient ring $\mathbb{Z}$ or rings of finite global dimension are generalized to more general cases. Moreover, we establish a model structure on the weakly idempotent complete exact category $\mathcal{F}ib$ consisting of fibrant $RG$-modules, and show that the homotopy category $\mathrm{Ho}(\mathcal{F}ib)$ is triangle equivalent to both the stable category $\underline{\mathcal{C}of}(RG)$ of Benson's cofibrant modules, and the stable module category ${\rm StMod}(RG)$. The relation between cofibrant modules and Gorenstein projective modules is discussed, and we show that under some conditions such that ${\rm Gcd}_RG<\infty$, ${\rm Ho}(\mathcal{F}ib)$ is equivalent to the stable category of Gorenstein projective $RG$-modules, the singularity category, and the homotopy category of totally acyclic complexes of projective $RG$-modules.

Abstract:We prove that groups in a certain class of metabelian locally compact groups, have quadratic Dehn function. As an application, we embed the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups into finitely presented metabelian groups with quadratic Dehn function. Also, we prove that Baumslag's finitely presented metabelian groups, in which the lamplighter groups embed, have quadratic Dehn function.

Homotopy cofinality for Non-Abelian homology of group diagrams

Abstract:We prove that a homotopy cofinal functor between small categories induces a weak equivalence between homotopy colimits of pointed simplicial sets. This is used to prove that the non-Abelian homology of a group diagram is isomorphic to the homology of its inverse image under a homotopy cofinal functor. This also made it possible to establish that the non-Abelian homology of group diagrams are invariant under the left Kan extension along virtual discrete cofibrations. With the help of these results, we have constructed a non-Abelian Gabriel-Zisman homology theory for simplicial sets with coefficients in group diagrams. Moreover, we have generalized this theory to presheaves over an arbitrary small category, which play the role of simplicial sets. Sufficient conditions are found for the isomorphism of non-Abelian homology of presheaves over a small category with coefficients in group diagrams. It is proved that the non-Abelian homology of the factorization category for the small category is isomorphic to the Baues-Wirsching homology. A condition is found under which a functor between small categories induces an isomorphism of non-Abelian Baues-Wirsching homology.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate finiteness properties of totally disconnected locally compact groups for general commutative rings $R$, in particular for $R = \mathbb{Z}$ and $R= \mathbb{Q}$. We show these properties satisfy many analogous results to the case of discrete groups, and we provide analogues of the famous Bieri's and Brown's criteria for finiteness properties and deduce that both $FP_n$-properties and $F_n$-properties are quasi-isometric invariant. Moreover, we introduce graph-wreath products in the category of totally disconnected locally compact groups and discuss their finiteness properties.

Abstract:Let be a complex projective variety. Suppose that the group of birational automorphisms of contains finite subgroups isomorphic to for fixed and arbitrarily large. We show that does not exceed . Moreover, the equality holds if and only if is birational to an abelian variety. We also show that an analogous result holds for groups of bimeromorphic automorphisms of compact Kähler spaces under some additional assumptions.
