Abstract:In the present study, a novel liquid desiccant dehumidifier is developed by incorporating an indirect contact M-cooler based on the Maisotsenko cycle. The proposed novel dehumidifier is compared with a conventional dehumidifier by developing a thermal model. The analytical model is chosen in the present study for the performance analysis of novel and conventional dehumidifiers. The developed analytical model is used to analyze the performance of both the novel and conventional dehumidifiers. Further, for the first time, the impact of Eckert and Prandtl numbers on the performance parameters of a novel dehumidifier is analyzed, and obtained results are presented in detail. Initially, the validation of the proposed model is carried out with the experimentally measured data accessible in the literature on the liquid desiccant dehumidifier. Then the performance prediction of both dehumidifiers is carried out using the proposed model. While validating the developed model maximum possible error is observed to be within ± 9.7% and found to be in reasonable agreement. Using the developed model, the performance analysis on both the novel and conventional desiccant dehumidifiers is carried out by selecting vapour desorption rate and energy exchange per unit area as performance parameters. From performance comparison analysis, it is observed that the vapour desorption rate and energy exchange per membrane area of the novel dehumidifier are superior than a conventional dehumidifier. Also, during the performance assessment for the given operating range, the maximum vapour desorption rate and energy exchange per unit area are observed to be 61 LPM/m 2 and 5.5 kW/m 2 for the novel dehumidifier. Whereas, for the conventional dehumidifier the above-mentioned performance parameters are found to be 28 LPM/m 2 and 3 kW/m 2 respectively. Hence, from this study, it is observed that novel M-cycle based membrane dehumidifiers can be effectively implemented for industrial dehumidification/drying applications.
