Abstract:Precisely regulating the coordination microenvironment of single-atom catalysts (SACs) to achieve enhanced reactivity is significant and desired but still in its infancy. Herein, a coordination-tuned and pyrolysis-free strategy is reported for the fabrication of a Fenton-like SAC containing the axial five-coordinated configuration (Fe–N5). The N species on the N-doped graphene act as anchoring points for iron phthalocyanine (a typical Fe–N4 complex) to obtain isolated Fe–N5 sites, which significantly modulates the electronic state of Fe atoms and lowers the H2O2 activation barrier for •OH production. Moreover, the enriched pyridinic N serve as contaminant adsorption sites shortening •OH diffusion distance, establishing a dual-site reaction mechanism with Fe–N5 sites. As such, the Fe–N5 catalyst exhibits exceptional Fenton activity towards catalytic oxidation of phenol (k = 0.180 min−1). Our work unravels the dependence of Fenton activity on the single-atom coordination environment and provides a platform for precise engineering of SACs.

Abstract:A manganese(II) complex has been prepared with a proline-derived pentadentate ligand (Pro3Py), and it can be converted to a peroxo-manganese(III) complex in the presence of H2O2 and triethylamine. The resulting peroxomanganese(III) complex was well characterised by UV-vis, EPR and ESI-MS techniques, and the geometric structure was discussed based on DFT calculations.

Abstract:An iron complex with a chiral aminopyridine N4 ligand bearing strong electron‐donating and bulky morpholine groups on the ligand is synthesized and characterized. The iron complex serves to efficiently catalyze the asymmetric epoxidation of various olefins by employing aqueous hydrogen peroxide as the green oxidant, providing the corresponding epoxides in good to excellent yields and enantioselectivities (up to 93 % yield and 99.9 % ee). Owing to the introduction of morpholine functional groups on the ligand, the Fe‐catalyzed reaction can proceed with a catalytic amount of the carboxylic acid partner (3 mol %).
DFT insight into axial ligand effects on electronic structure and mechanistic reactivity of oxoiron(iv) porphyrin

Abstract:A series of DFT studies on the epoxidation reactions of olefins by oxoiron(iv) porphyrin cation radical complexes are performed in this work, to elucidate the axial ligand effects on the electronic features and reaction mechanism in detail. We analyzed the molecular orbitals, spin populations, and Mulliken charges along the intrinsic reaction coordinate route. From the findings, we confirmed that the interaction between the axial ligand and the oxoiron(iv) porphyrin is strong and the initial changes in the electronic structures occur early during the reaction, which further enhances the reactivity toward olefin epoxidation. More importantly, the patterns of the electron transfer from olefin to oxoiron(iv) porphyrin were impacted by the axial ligand. The pattern of successive electron transfer from Fe-O to porphyrin and then from C[double bond, length as m-dash]C to Fe-O for oxoiron(iv) porphyrin in case of fluorine and acetate axial ligands, whereas the pattern of electron transfer occurs from C[double bond, length as m-dash]C to porphyrin for oxoiron(iv) porphyrin in case of chlorine and nitrate axial ligands during the epoxidation reaction of the olefins. We also determined the intersystem crossing between the quartet and sextet spin states occurring at the second transition state (TS2) by the analysis of the two-dimensional potential energy surface.
Impact of Carboxylate Ligation on the C-H Activation Reactivity of Non-heme Fe(IV)O Complex: A Computational Investigation

Abstract:A comprehensive DFT investigation has been presented to predict how a carboxylate-rich macrocycle would affect the reactivity of non-heme Fe(IV)O complex towards C-H activation. The popular non-heme iron oxo complex [FeIV(O)(N4Py)]2+, (N4Py = N,N-(bis(2-pyridyl)methyl)N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine)) (1), has been selected here as the primary compound. It is transformed to the compound [FeIV(O)(nBu-P2DA)], where nBu-P2DA = N-(1',1'-bis(2-pyridyl)pentyl)iminodiacetate) (2) after the replacement of two pyridine donors of N4Py with carboxylate groups. Two other complexes, namely 3 and 4, have been predicted sequentially substituting nitrogen with the carboxylate groups. Ethylbenzene and dihydrotoluene were chosen as substrates. In terms of C-H activation reactivity, an interesting pattern emerges: as the carboxylate group becomes more equatorially enriched, the reactivity increases, following the trend 1 < 2 < 3 < 4. This also aligns with available experimental reports related to complexes 1 and 2. Fe(IV)O complexes exhibit two-state reactivity (triplet and quintet) whereas the quintet state is more favourable due to the stabilization of the transition states through exchange interactions involving a greater number of unpaired electrons. A detailed analysis of the factors influencing reactivity has been performed, including distortion energy (which decreases for the transition state with the addition of carboxylate groups), the triplet-quintet oxidant energy gap (which consistently decreases as carboxylate group enrichment increases), steric factors, and quantum mechanical tunneling. This investigation provides a detailed explanation of the observed outcomes and predicts the higher reactivity of carboxylate-enriched Fe(IV)O complexes. After potential experimental verification, this could lead to the development of new, optimal catalysts for C-H activation.

Abstract:The spectroscopic properties and electronic structure of the four-coordinate high-spin [FeIII(L3)(OOtBu)]+ complex (1; L3 = hydrotris(3-tert-butyl-5-isopropyl-1-pyrazolyl)borate; tBu = tert-butyl) are investigated and compared to the six-coordinated high-spin [Fe(6-Me3TPA)(OHx)(OOtBu)]x+ system (TPA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine, x = 1 or 2) studied earlier [Lehnert, N.; Ho, R. Y. N.; Que, L., Jr.; Solomon, E. I. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2001, 123, 12802-12816]. Complex 1 is characterized by Raman features at 889 and 830 cm-1 which are assigned to the O-O stretch (mixed with the symmetric C-C stretch) and a band at 625 cm-1 that corresponds to nu(Fe-O). The UV-vis spectrum shows a charge-transfer (CT) transition at 510 nm from the alkylperoxo pi v* (v = vertical to C-O-O plane) to a d orbital of Fe(III). A second CT is identified from MCD at 370 nm that is assigned to a transition from pi h* (h = horizontal to C-O-O plane) to an Fe(III) d orbital. For the TPA complex the pi v* CT is at 560 nm while the pi h* CT is to higher energy than 250 nm. These spectroscopic differences between four- and six-coordinate Fe(III)-OOR complexes are interpreted on the basis of their different ligand fields. In addition, the electronic structure of Fe-OOPtn complexes with the biologically relevant pterinperoxo ligand are investigated. Substitution of the tert-butyl group in 1 by pterin leads to the corresponding Fe(III)-OOPtn species (2), which shows a stronger electron donation from the peroxide to Fe(III) than 1. This is related to the lower ionization potential of pterin. Reduction of 2 by one electron leads to the Fe(II)-OOPtn complex (3), which is relevant as a model for potential intermediates in pterin-dependent hydroxylases. However, in the four-coordinate ligand field of 3, the additional electron is located in a nonbonding d orbital of iron. Hence, the pterinperoxo ligand is not activated for heterolytic cleavage of the O-O bond in this system. This is also evident from the calculated reaction energies that are endothermic by at least 20 kcal/mol.

Abstract:As diiron subsite models of [FeFe]-hydrogenases with odt bridge, two new series of PNP-chelate or -bridge diiron oxadithiolate complexes Fe2(μ-odt)(CO)4{(Ph2P)2NR} (1–3 and 4–6) were prepared by selective substitutions of diiron hexacarbonyl complex Fe2(μ-odt)(CO)6 (A, odt = SCH2OCH2S) with different PNP ligands (PNP = (Ph2P)2NR, R = (CH2)3Me, (CH2)3NMe2 and (CH2)3Si(OEt)3). All the new model complexes have been fully characterized by elemental analysis, various spectroscopies, and particularly for 1 and 4–6 by X-ray crystallography. In order to investigate the influence of coordination modes (chelate vs. bridge) of PNP ligands on redox and electrocatalytic properties of diiron model complexes for proton reduction, the protonation and electrochemistry of 1 and 4 as a pair of representative counterparts are well studied and compared in the absence and presence of strong acid (CF3CO2H) and weak acid (CH3CO2H) as different proton sources by using in situ IR and NMR spectroscopies as well as cyclic voltammetry (CV). For example, the protonation studies have shown that i) with excess CF3CO2H, protonations of both 1 and 4 are able to form the respective hydride species 1(μH)+ and 4(μH)+, but in which the former is completely protonated whereas the latter is less reactive; and ii) with excess CH3CO2H, complex 1 is unactive yet counterpart 4 is partially protonated to afford species 4(μH)+. The electrochemical investigations have displayed that i) with CF3CO2H as a proton source, complex 1 has a very simliar turnover frequency (TOF) and a much lower overpotential for cataytic proton reduction to H2 in comparison to 4; and ii) with CH3CO2H as a proton source, complex 1 shows a much greater TOF value and a closer overpotential for H2 evolution in contrast to 4.

Abstract:A dinuclear iron(II) complex Fe2L2(μ2-Cl)2Cl2 (L=N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)prop-2-yn-1-amine) was prepared and fully characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, electrochemical analysis and X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis. The catalytic activity of the complex was assessed for the hydroxylation of aromatic compounds by using aqueous H2O2 as an oxidant in acetonitrile. The catalytic system was applicable in a wide range of substrates including aromatic compounds with both electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents and showed moderate to good catalytic activity and selectivity in the oxidation reactions. Particularly, in the case of benzene the selectivity of phenol achieve to 74% with the reaction conversion of 24.8%.
A Unique Fe–N4 Coordination System Enabling Transformation of Oxygen into Superoxide for Photocatalytic C–H Activation with High Efficiency and Selectivity

Abstract:Selective oxidation of C–H bonds is one of the most important reactions in organic synthesis. However, activation of the α‐C–H bond of ethylbenzene by use of photocatalysis‐generated superoxide anions (O2•−) remains a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate the formation of individual Fe atoms on polymeric carbon nitride (CN) that activates O2 to create O2•− for facilitating the reaction of ethylbenzene to form acetophenone. By utilizing density functional theory (DFT) and materials characterization techniques, we have shown that individual Fe atoms are coordinated to four N atoms of CN and the resultant low‐spin Fe‐N4 system (t2g6eg0) is not only a great adsorption site for oxygen molecules, but also allows for fast transfer of electrons generated in the CN framework to adsorbed O2, producing O2•−. The oxidation reaction of ethylbenzene triggered by O2•− ions turns out to have a high conversion rate of 99% as well as an acetophenone selectivity of 99%, which can be ascribed to a novel reaction pathway that is different from the conventional route involving hydroxyl radicals and the production of phenethyl alcohol. The oxygen activation strategy demonstrated in this work requires mild conditions and uses inexhaustible solar energy; therefore, it possesses great potential for other C–H activation reactions besides ethylbenzene oxidation. Experimental and Theoretical Study on Crown Ether-Appended-Fe(III) Porphyrin Complexes and Catalytic Oxidation Cyclohexene with O2

Abstract:Modifying non-precious metal porphyrins at the meso-position is sufficient to further improve the ability to activate O2 and the selectivity of the corresponding redox products. In this study, a crown ether-appended Fe(III) porphyrin complex (FeTC4PCl) was formed by replacing Fe(III) porphyrin (FeTPPCl) at the meso-position. The reactions of FeTPPCl and FeTC4PCl catalysed by O2 oxidation of cyclohexene under different conditions were studied, and three main products, 2-cyclohexen-1-ol (1), 2-cyclohexen-1-one (2), and 7-oxabicyclo[4.1.0]heptane (3), were obtained. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, and the addition of axial coordination compounds on the reactions were investigated. The conversion of cyclohexene reached 94% at 70 °C after 12 h, and the selectivity toward product 1 was 73%. The geometrical structure optimization, molecular orbital energy level analysis, atomic charge, spin density, and density of orbital states analysis of FeTPPCl, FeTC4PCl, as well as the oxygenated complexes (Fe-O2)TCPPCl and (Fe-O2)TC4PCl formed after adsorption of O2, were carried out using the DFT method. The results of thermodynamic quantity variation with reaction temperature and Gibbs free energy variation were also analysed. Finally, based on experimental and theoretical analysis, the mechanism of the cyclohexene oxidation reaction with FeTC4PCl as a catalyst and O2 as an oxidant was deduced, and the reaction mechanism was obtained as a free radical chain reaction process.

Abstract:Identifying the actual structure and tuning the catalytic activity of Fe–N4‐based moieties, well‐recognized high‐activity sites in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are challenging problems. Herein, by using poly(iron phthalocyanine) (PFePc) as an Fe–N4‐based model electrocatalyst, a mechanistic insight into the effect of axial ligands on the ORR catalytic activity of Fe–N4 is provided and it is revealed that the ORR activity of Fe–N4 sites with OH desorption as a rate‐determining step is related to the energy level gap between the OH pxpy and Fe 3 dz2 , which can be tuned by regulating the field strength of the axial ligands. Thus, PFePc coordinated with a weak‐field ligand I− (PFePc‐I) with a low energy level of Fe 3 dz2 exhibits high activity evidenced by an ORR half‐wave potential as high as 0.948 V versus RHE. This work develops a novel strategy for tuning the ORR activity of Fe–N4 and reveals the correlation between the electronic/geometric structure and catalytic activity of Fe–N4.

Abstract:The oxidation of L-proline (Pro) by HO ● radical in water and the influence of transition metal ions on this process has been revisited by using the density functional theory (DFT) method at the M05-2X/6-311 + + G(3df,3pd)//M05-2X/6-311 + + G(d,p) level of theory at the temperature of 298.15 K. The main reactive sites of the HO ● –initiated oxidation of Pro via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions are at the β- and γ-carbon, with the branching ratios being 44.6% and 39.5%, respectively. The overall rate constant at 298.15 K is 6.04 × 10 8 M −1 s −1 . In addition, Pro tends to form stable complexes with both Fe and Cu ions via the –COO functional group of dipole-salt form. The most stable Cu(II)-Pro complexes have high oxidant risks in enhancing the HO ● formation in the presence of reducing agents. Besides this, the high oxidation state metal complexes, i.e. Fe(III)-Pro and Cu(II)-Pro, may be oxidized by HO ● radical via HAT reactions but with a lower rate constant than that of free-Pro. By contrast, the low oxidation state metal complexes (i.e. Fe(II)-Pro and Cu(I)-Pro) have higher oxidation risks than the free ligands, and thus, the complexation enhances the oxidation of Pro amino acid.

Identifying the surface active sites of FeOx-modified Pt/Nb2O5 catalysts in CO and propane oxidation

Abstract:A comparative study on FeOx-modified Pt/Nb2O5 catalyzing CO and propane oxidation has been conducted to differentiate the surface active sites demanded for these two important reactions. Pt-Fe/Nb2O5 displays improved activity for CO oxidation but decreased activity for propane oxidation compared to Pt/Nb2O5. Detailed characterizations reveal the alteration of the geometrical and electronic states of Pt species and surface acidity induced upon the addition of FeOx, thus clarifying the divergent catalytic responses in CO and propane oxidation. Pt-FeOx interface sites promotes oxygen activation that is a crucial step in CO oxidation, thereby accelerating the CO oxidation. However, the rate-determining step in propane oxidation is propane activation that requires the synergistic catalysis of acid sites and Pt0, the critical active sites for propane oxidation. The inferior activity of Pt-Fe/Nb2O5 in propane oxidation is explained by the coverage of acid sites and Pt species.

Abstract:In this article, we present a meticulous computational study to foresee the effect of an oxygen-rich macrocycle on the reactivity of C-H activation. For this study, a widely studied nonheme Fe(IV)O molecule with a TMC (1,4,8,11-tetramethyl 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) macrocycle that is equatorially attached to four nitrogen atoms (designated as N4) and acetonitrile as an axial ligand has been taken into account. For the goal of hetero-substitution, the step-by-step replacement of the N4 framework by O atoms, i.e., N4, N3O1, N2O2, N1O3, and O4 systems, has been considered, and dihydroanthracene (DHA) has been used as the substrate. In order to neutralise the system and prevent the self-interaction error in DFT, counterions called triflates have also been included in the calculations. Studying the energetics of these C-H bond activation reactions and the potential energy surfaces mapped therefore reveals that the initial hydrogen abstraction, which is the rate-determining step, follows the two-state reactivity (TSR) patterns, which means that the originally excited quintet state falls lower in the transition state and product. The reaction follows the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism, as indicated by the spin density studies. The results revealed a fascinating reactivity order, in which the reactivity increases with the enrichment of the oxygen atom in the equatorial position, namely, the order follows N4 < N3O1 < N2O2 < N1O3 < O4. The impact of oxygen substitution on quantum mechanical tunneling and H/D kinetic isotope effect studies have also been investigated. When analysing the causes of this reactivity pattern, a number of variables have been identified, including the reactant like transition structure, spin density distribution, the distortion energy, and the energies of the electron acceptor orbital, i.e., the energy of LUMO (σ*z2), which validate the obtained outcome. Our results also show very good agreement with earlier combined experimental and theoretical studies considering TMC and TMCO-type complexes. The DFT predictions reported here will undoubtedly encourage experimental research in this biomimetic field, as they provide an alternative with higher reactivity in which heteroatoms can be substituted for traditional nitrogen atoms.

Abstract:Atomic iron embedded in N-doped carbon materials (Fe–N–C) are regarded as the most promising alternative to platinum-based catalysts in anion exchange membrane fuel cells, due to their high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. The molecular catalyst iron phthalocyanine (FePc) is often employed to explore the correlation between a model single Fe structure and ORR activity. Recent advancements have introduced a penta-coordinated Fe–N 5 structure achieved by binding FePc onto pyridine-functionalized carbon surfaces, demonstrating outstanding ORR activities. To investigate the effect of the axial pyridine ligand, in this work, four different N-functionalized carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) were prepared, each adorned with a unique N-heterocycle (pyridine, quinoline, isoquinoline, or acridine). Subsequent binding of FePc (FePc/N-CNTs) afforded penta-coordinated complexes in all cases. The characterization results demonstrated that the penta-coordination Fe–N 5 configuration could be effectively constructed by this method. The ORR activities of these FePc/N-CNTs suggest that the local surface structure around the axial ligand on the functionalized CNTs influences catalytic performance.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Electrochemistry of Monophosphine‐containing Diiron Propane‐1,2‐dithiolate Complexes Related to the Active Site of [Fefe]‐hydrogenases

Abstract:Five monophosphine‐substituted diiron propane‐1,2‐dithiolate complexes as the active site models of [FeFe]‐hydrogenases have been synthesized and characterized. Reactions of complex [Fe2(CO)6{μ‐SCH2CH(CH3)S}] (1) with a monophosphine ligand tris(4‐methylphenyl)phosphine, diphenyl‐2‐pyridylphosphine, tris(4‐chlorophenyl)phosphine, triphenylphosphine, or tris(4‐fluorophenyl)phosphine in the presence of the oxidative agent Me3NO·2H2O gave the monophosphine‐substituted diiron complexes [Fe2(CO)5(L){μ‐SCH2CH(CH3)S}] [L = P(4‐C6H4CH3)3, 2; Ph2P(2‐C5H4N), 3; P(4‐C6H4Cl)3, 4; PPh3, 5; P(4‐C6H4F)3, 6] in 81%–94% yields. Complexes 2–6 have been characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopy, and X‐ray crystallography. In addition, electrochemical studies revealed that these complexes can catalyze the reduction of protons to H2 in the presence of HOAc.
A DFT Study on the Activity Origin of Fe-N-C Sites for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Iron-nitrogen-carbon materials have been known as the most promising non-noble metal catalyst for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), but the genuine active sites for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are still arguable. Herein, by the thorough density functional theory investigations, we unravel that the planar Fe2 N6 site exhibits excellent ORR catalytic activity over both FeN3 and FeN4 sites, and the potential-determining step is determined to be the *OH hydrogenation step with an overpotential of 0.415 V. The ORR activity of Fe2 N6 site originates from the low spin magnetic moment (1.11 μB ), which leads to high antibonding states and low d-band center of the Fe center, further leads to weak binding strength of *OH species. The density of FeN4 sites only has little influence on the ORR activity owing to the similar interaction between active site and intermediates in ORR. Our research sheds light on the activity origin of iron-nitrogen-carbon materials for ORR.

Abstract:Modulating the coordination environments and the electronic configurations of the metal centers of single-atom catalysts (SACs) to further improve the activation of peroxomonosulfate (PMS) remains a great challenge. In this work, oxygen (O) atoms were doped into Fe-N 4 single-atom catalysts via oxygen-containing acid precursors to adjust the electronic structure to enhance PMS activation. The prepared Fe-N 4 O single-atom catalysts exhibited excellent oxidation capacity, tolerance, elevated stability and continuous organic oxidation. The primary degradation pathway is the high-valent iron (Fe IV = O) and the electron transfer mechanism. DFT calculations indicated that the adsorption energy and electron transfer number of second-shell-coordinated Fe-N 4 O were much higher than those of one-shell-coordinated Fe-N 3 O. The introduction of O atoms increased the electron density of the central Fe atoms and the electron delocalization domains, which increased the electron transfer capacity. This research provides a method to finely control the coordination environment and electronic structure of Fe-N 4 , revealing the unique dynamic regulation mechanism of heteroatoms for advanced oxidation, and providing a reference for the design of high-efficiency Fenton-like-based catalysts.

Abstract:In this study, we prepared non-heme Fe III complexes ( 1 , 2 , and 3 ) of an N 4 donor set of ligands (H 2 L, Me 2 L, and BPh 2 L). 1 is supported by a monoanionic bispyridine-dioxime ligand (HL). In 2 and 3 , the primary coordination sphere of Fe remained similar to that in 1 , except that the oxime protons of the ligand were replaced with two methyl groups and a bridging −BPh 2 moiety, respectively. X-ray structures of the Fe II complexes ( 1a and 3a ) revealed similar Fe–N distances; however, they were slightly elongated in 2a . The Fe III /Fe II potential of 1 , 2 , and 3 appeared at −0.31 V, −0.25 V, and 0.07 V vs. Fc + /Fc, respectively, implying that HL and Me 2 L have comparable donor properties. However, BPh 2 L is more electron deficient than HL or Me 2 L. 1 showed electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in acetonitrile in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid (TFAH) as the proton source at E cat/2 = −0.45 V and revealed selective 4e − /4H + reduction of O 2 to H 2 O. 1 showed an effective overpotential ( η eff ) of 0.98 V and turnover frequency (TOF max ) of 1.02 × 10 3 s −1 . Kinetic studies revealed a k cat of 2.7 × 10 7 M −2 s −1 . Strikingly, 2 and 3 remained inactive for electrocatalytic ORR, which established the essential role of the oxime scaffolds in the electrocatalytic ORR of 1 . Furthermore, a chemical ORR of 1 has been investigated using decamethylferrocene as the electron source. For 1 , a similar rate equation was noted to that of the electrocatalytic pathway. A k cat of 6.07 × 10 4 M −2 s −1 was found chemically. Complex 2 , however, underwent a very slow chemical ORR. Complex 3 chemically enhances the 4e − /4H + reduction of O 2 and exhibits a TOF of 0.24 s −1 and a k cat value of 2.47 × 10 2 M −1 s −1 . Based on the experimental observations, we demonstrate that the oxime backbone of the ligand in 1 works as a proton exchanging site in the 4e − /4H + reduction of O 2 . The study describes how the ORR is affected by the tuning of the ligand scaffold in a family of non-heme Fe complexes.
