Abstract:<p>Searching novel electrode materials with high performance is very important for next-generation rechargeable metal-ion batteries. In this work, performing the first-principles calculations, we investigate the potential application of penta-PtN2 monolayer as an anode material for alkali metal-ion batteries. The pristine penta-PtN2 monolayer is predicted to have a very small gap of about 75 meV. After adsorbing the metal atoms (Li/Na), it becomes a metal, suggesting a significant improvement of its electrical conductivity. More interestingly, the calculated open circuit voltages (0.44/0.41 V for Li/Na) and low surface diffusion energy barriers (0.25/0.14 eV for Li/Na) during the ion intercalation processes reveal the advantages of penta-PtN2 monolayer as the anode material. Furthermore, the estimated specific capacity of Li/Na can also achieve an appreciable value of 480.53 mA·h·g-1. In addition, the ab initio molecular dynamics simulations show that the observed adsorption systems can exhibit a good stability at the temperature of 400 K. These results suggest that the penta-PtN2 monolayer could be a candidate as an anode material for Li/Na ion storage.</p>
