Abstract:P2-type layered oxides with low Na + diffusion barriers have emerged as promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to excellent cycle stability and rate performance. Among them, Co/Ni-free Fe-Mn-Cu based cathode materials have gained significant attention owing to their abundance, low cost, and environmentally friendless. However, their practical application has been hindered by irreversible phase changes during the charging/discharging process, leading to rapid capacity decay. To address this issue, the inactive element (Titanium) is introduced in Na 0.70 Fe 0.20 Cu 0.20 Mn 0.60 O 2 oxides to mitigate the detrimental phase transitions and enhance electrochemical performance by facilitating anionic redox reactions. The resulting Na 0.70 Fe 0.20 Cu 0.20 Mn 0.55 Ti 0.05 O 2 (NFCMT-0.05) cathode material exhibits a high initial discharge specific capacity of 186 mAh/g at 0.1C and superior cycling stability, with a capacity retention of 83.5% after 400 cycles at 5C between 2.0 and 4.3 V. Furthermore, the NFCMT-0.05 maintains P2 phase structure throughout the entire sodiation/desodiation process, and the reversible oxygen-related redox reaction provides additional discharge capacity for the Fe-Mn-based cathode above 4.1 V. The NFCMT-0.05 also demonstrates fast Na + ion transfer kinetics and excellent rate performance, delivering a discharge capacity at 5C that is 60% of that at 0.1C. The DFT calculation confirms that the introduction of titanium effectively reduces the volume change and suppresses the relative slip of adjacent TMO 6 layers. As a result, Ti-doping is instrumental in improving the cycle stability of NFCMT. This work offers a low-cost strategy for constructing high-performance cathode materials for SIBs. offering promising prospects for the development of efficient and affordable energy storage systems.

Structural Regulation of P2‐Type Layered Oxide with Anion/Cation Codoping Strategy for Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Lu et al. proposed that Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 modified by Mg/F anion/cation co‐doping provides high specific capacity, high rate and long cycle stability. Its phase transition under high voltage is suppressed while providing extra capacity through oxygen redox reactions. The preferred migration of Naf to Nae sites also enhances the diffusion ability of Na+. P2‐type layered transition metal oxides are potential cathodes for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs), but they commonly suffer from severe capacity degradation owing to multiple phase transitions and Na+/vacancy ordering during the extraction/insertion process. An anionic/cationic co‐doping strategy at high sodium contents is proposed to effectively achieve high‐rate and long‐term stability of P2‐Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2. The resulting Na0.75Mg0.1Ni0.23Mn0.67O1.95F0.05 (NMNMOF) cathode delivers a reversible capacity of 116 mAh g−1 at 75 mA g−1 and maintains an initial capacity of 73% at 1500 mA g−1 after 1000 cycles. The Mg/F anionic/cationic co‐doping strategy impacts the local environment of the surrounding transition metal and oxygen, regulates the electron distribution, and modifies the initial diffusion state of Na sites, enhancing the diffusion ability of Na+. Moreover, the phase transition of P2‐O2 is well suppressed and the decrease in Mn3+ content greatly alleviates the Jahn–Teller effect to enhance structural stability. The full‐cell devices with NMNMOF cathode and hard carbon anode demonstrate a high capacity of 80 mAh g−1 at 10 C and an excellent cycle life of over 500 cycles for applications. The anionic/cationic co‐doping strategy will inspire the rational design of P2‐type layered oxides and provide a new perspective for advanced SIBs.

Enabling Rapid and Stable Sodium Storage via a P2-Type Layered Cathode with High-Voltage Zero-Phase Transition Behavior

Abstract:Currently, a major target in the development of Na-ion batteries is the concurrent attainment of high-rate capacity and long cycling stability. Herein, an advanced Na-ion battery with high-rate capability and long cycle stability based on Li/Ti co-doped P2-type Na0.67Mn0.67Ni0.33O2, a host material with high-voltage zero-phase transition behavior and fast Na+ migration/conductivity during dynamic de-embedding process, is constructed. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the two-element doping strategy promotes a mutually reinforcing effect, which greatly facilitates the transfer capability of Na+. The cation Ti4+ doping is a dominant high voltage, significantly elevating the operation voltage to 4.4 V. Meanwhile, doping Li+ shows the function in charge transfer, improving the rate performance and prolonging cycling lifespan. Consequently, the designed P2-Na0.75Mn0.54Ni0.27Li0.14Ti0.05O2 cathode material exhibits discharge capacities of 129, 104, and 85 mAh g- 1 under high voltage of 4.4 V at 1, 10, and 20 C, respectively. More importantly, the full-cell delivers a high initial capacity of 198 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C (17.3 mA g-1) and a capacity retention of 73% at 5 C (865 mA g-1) after 1000 cycles, which is seldom witnessed in previous reports, emphasizing their potential applications in advanced energy storage.
Suppressing the P2‐O2 phase transition and Na+/vacancy ordering in Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 by a delicate multicomponent modulation strategy

Abstract:A delicate multicomponent modulation strategy is employed on P2‐Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 to address the P2‐O2 phase transition and Na+/vacancy ordering problems simultaneously. and Thanks to the multicomponent modulation strategy, the modified cathode Na0.72Ni0.28Li0.05Mn0.57Ti0.10O2 can show enhanced electrochemical performance in half and full cell. P2‐type Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 is a promising cathode for sodium‐ion batteries with features of high specific capacity and air resistance, whereas its cycling stability and rate performance are dissatisfactory suffering from the disastrous P2‐O2 phase transition and Na+/vacancy ordering during sodium‐ion de/intercalation, which makes it an obstruction for future practical applications. Herein, a delicate multicomponent modulation strategy is proposed to tackle these two issues simultaneously, in which Li+ and Ti4+ are introduced to replace the Ni2+ and Mn4+, respectively, whereas the Na+ content is also designed according to the principle of charge balance. Consequently, the designed cathode (Na0.72Ni0.28Li0.05Mn0.57Ti0.10O2) can deliver an enchanting cycling stability of 80% at 1 C after 200 cycles along with a considerable rate performance of 82.7 mAh g−1 at 5 C. In situ X‐ray diffraction measurement demonstrates the destructive P2‐O2 phase transition is suppressed and converted into a P2‐Z phase transition with superior reversibility as well as smooth charge/discharge curves with better Na+/vacancy disordering. In addition, the full cell matched with hard carbon anode delivers an excellent energy density of 263.4 Wh kg−1 at 37.3 W kg−1, exhibiting great practicality. Our work presents a mean to rationally design the component of layered oxide cathode and achieve fabulous performance for sodium ion batteries.

Abstract:P2-type Na-Ni-Mn layered oxides are potential cathode materials for energy storage in sodium-ion batteries, but have low cycling stability and limited Na storage capacity due to complex phase transitions. Herein, co-regulating vacancies and doping were implemented to address the issue, resulting in the successful synthesis of hexagonal columnar P2-Na0.5Li0.1Ni0.2Mn0.7O2 through a solid-state synthesis method. Increased interlayer spacing of Na+ can offer numerous active sites for Na+ insertion and extraction. P2-Na0.5Li0.1Ni0.2Mn0.7O2 exhibits an impressive initial discharge capacity of 139.1 mAh g−1 and 78.5 % capacity retention after 100cycles at 1.0C, which is a significant improvement compared to the pristine Na0.7Ni0.3Mn0.7O2. Overall, our study significantly boosts the electrochemical performance of P2-type materials, thus offering exciting avenues for the advancement of high-performance sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Layered transition metal oxides are attractive cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries but are largely hindered by the low capacity and poor cycling stability. Herein, Na is substituted by Li to enhance the capacity and stability of Na1-xLixMn2/3Ni1/3O2. It is found that Li substitution can provide robust structure benefiting from contracted adjacent transition metal layers owing to strong bonding property of O–Li–O and incremental inactive Mn4+. So it follows that noxious Mn3+ Jahn-Teller distortion and slabs slipping are mitigated. Also, the presence of “Li pillar” disturbs the Na+/vacancies and transition metal ordering during Na extraction, preventing phase transformation during deep desodiation process. Consequently, the Na1-xLixMn2/3Ni1/3O2 demonstrates high capacity, remarkable rate capability, and long-term cycling life. Among them, Na0.8Li0.2Mn2/3Ni1/3O2 cathode delivers a discharge capacity of 115.3 mA h/g, with a capacity retention of 86.0% after 100 cycles. This simple strategy to stabilize the layered structure oxides is inspiring to design high-performance cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The development of cobalt-free P2-Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 cathodes is hampered by poor electrochemical performance, resulting from structural instability during high-voltage cycling. Herein, Li+ and F− ions are introduced simultaneously via a simple sol–gel method. The F not only enters the lattice but forms chemically stable NaF on the surface. The modified electrode delivered significantly better electrochemical performance than the pristine one, including much-enhanced capacity retention (64% vs. 36%, 100 cycles) at 0.5 C and a four-time higher capacity output at 10 C. The ex situ XRD and in situ Raman analysis revealed cyclability enhancement mechanisms in terms of inhibiting the P2–O2 phase transition and Na+/vacancy ordering. The conductivity measurements (based on AC impedance and DC polarization) and GITT analysis proved, on both bulk material and electrode levels, that Na+ conduction and, thus, rate performance is notably promoted by doping. The individual contribution of Li and F to the overall performance improvement was also discussed. Furthermore, a solid-state sodium-metal battery was successfully demonstrated with the modified cathode. The above results verify that Li+/F− incorporation can enable enhancements in both cyclability and rate capability of the P2-Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 cathodes and are expected to provide a new perspective for the rational design of high-performance layered oxide cathode materials for progressive sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Synergistic dual‐site doping with K and Li in the Na and transition metal layers significantly improves the overlap between Ni 3d and O 2p bands through Li doping. Further enhancement of kinetics and stabilization is achieved through K doping. This dual‐site doping strategy leads to markedly improved structural stability at high voltages, achieving high‐performance cathodes for Na‐ion batteries. Designing cathode materials that effectively enhancing structural stability under high voltage is paramount for rationally enhancing energy density and safety of Na‐ion batteries. This study introduces a novel P2‐Na0.73K0.03Ni0.23Li0.1Mn0.67O2 (KLi‐NaNMO) cathode through dual‐site synergistic doping of K and Li in Na and transition metal (TM) layers. Combining theoretical and experimental studies, this study discovers that Li doping significantly strengthens the orbital overlap of Ni (3d) and O (2p) near the Fermi level, thereby regulates the phase transition and charge compensation processes with synchronized Ni and O redox. The introduction of K further adjusts the ratio of Nae and Naf sites at Na layer with enhanced structural stability and extended lattice space distance, enabling the suppression of TM dissolution, achieving a single‐phase transition reaction even at a high voltage of 4.4 V, and improving reaction kinetics. Consequently, KLi‐NaNMO exhibits a high capacity (105 and 120 mAh g−1 in the voltage of 2–4.2 V and 2–4.4 V at 0.1 C, respectively) and outstanding cycling performance over 300 cycles under 4.2 and 4.4 V. This work provides a dual‐site doping strategy to employ synchronized TM and O redox with improved capacity and high structural stability via electronic and crystal structure modulation.

Optimal Ti-Substitution in Layered Oxide Cathodes for Na-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Sodium layered oxides NaxMO2 (x <= 1 and M = transition metal ions) gain interest as sodium-ion battery (NIB) cathodes due to their high energy density and cost-effectiveness. The nature of transition metal ions (M) defines the material properties, and the substitution of M with redox inactive Ti4+ is often seen as beneficial in reducing phase transitions during cycling and thus improving the cycle life. In this respect, our present study focuses on understanding the origin of this improvement by studying the highly substituted P2 Na0.67Ni0.30Zn0.03Mn0.67-yTiyO2 (0 <= y <= 0.67) phases based on their electrochemical performance combined with structural analyses and DFT calculations. The results indicate that Ti4+, by increasing the M-O bond ionicity, disrupts the Na+-vacancy ordering at lower voltages (<4 V, until similar to 60% SOC) and reduces the participation of O 2p in the redox process, thereby suppressing Na-removal and the extent of P2-O2 phase transition at high voltages. We show that this effect becomes maximum for y = 0.52 (P2 Na0.67Ni0.30Zn0.03Mn0.15Ti0.52O2) and beyond, for which we observe a nearly solid-solution-like behavior of the P2-type structure. However, the d(0) Ti4+ is prone to cation migration leading to poor structural reversibility as observed from operando XRD analyses, making the highly Ti4+-substituted material less suitable for practical applications. An optimum ratio of y = 0.3 (Na0.67Ni0.3Zn0.03Mn0.37Ti0.3O2) is beneficial for the cycle life as well as rate capability, and the study points to the importance of carefully selecting transition metal combinations in the finest ratio to achieve the best performing sodium layered oxide electrode materials.
Entropy Tuning Stabilizing P2‐Type Layered Cathodes for Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:This research introduces an entropy‐tuned and dual‐site substitution strategy to overcome challenges in P2‐type Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 cathodes for sodium‐ion battery. The tailored [Na0.67Zn0.05]Ni0.22Cu0.06Mn0.66Ti0.01O2 cathodes, strategically incorporating Zn ions, disrupt Na/vacancy ordering, fortifying the layered structure. More importantly, combining a series of in/ex situ experimental measurements and theoretical calculations, the energy storage mechanism and the reason for the excellent performance are unveiled. The P2‐type layered transition metal oxide cathodes confront formidable challenges, including irreversible deleterious phase transitions, transition metals migration, and sluggish Na+ diffusion kinetics, which hamper their rapid commercial application in sodium ion batteries (SIB). In this work, an entropy tuning with dual‐site substitution strategy is proposed to address the aforementioned issues. In the tailored [Na0.67Zn0.05]Ni0.22Cu0.06Mn0.66Ti0.01O2 (NZNCMTO) cathodes, the strategic incorporation of Zn ions serves to occupy Na sites, intentionally disrupting the Na/vacancy ordering and establishing a reinforcing "pillar" effect within the layered framework. Furthermore, the substitution of Cu and Ti for Ni and Mn bolsters covalent bonding with the lattice oxygen, thereby impeding the migration of the transition metal ions and leading to a near‐zero strain structural evolution during charge and discharge process. Density functional theory calculations confirmed that entropy‐tuned NZNCMTO substantially lowered the migration energy barrier for Na+ ions diffusion and improved electronic conductivity. Consequently, the NZNCMTO cathode exhibits an impressive high practical capacity of 91.54 mAh g−1 at a high discharge rate of 10 C, along with outstanding cycling stability, maintaining near 100% capacity retention over 500 cycles at a current density of 10 C. This work presents an innovative blueprint for designing high‐performance sodium‐ion battery cathode materials.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) have been selected as a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage systems due to their abundance. Among several NIB cathode materials, P2-type transition metal layered oxides (Na x TMO2, TM = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) featuring high theoretical capacity and better rate performance have attracted much attention. However, the practical applications have to endure the low energy density of NIB cathode materials compared to lithium-ion batteries. In tradition, the capacity is constrained by transition metal ions and is closed to their limits. Hence,in order to obtain extraordinarily high capacity in cathode materials, both anionic and cationic redox chemistry are utilized. Nevertheless, their performance is impeded by irreversible structure evolution and lattice oxygen emission. Therefore, it is highly urgent to develop stable anionic redox chemistry for high energy density and long-cycle-life layered oxide cathode materials. In this study, cation-doped Na x Mg y Cu z Mn (1−y−z) O2 cathode material featuring synergistic effects of cationic and anionic redox was reported. By cations doping, the inhibited structure evolution and lattice oxygen stabilization were achieved. Moreover, the effects of cation-doped Na x Mg y Cu z Mn (1−y−z) O2 were also studied by electrochemical measurements. Also, the mechanism of cation-doped NaxMgyCu z Mn (1−y−z) O2 was confirmed by operando synchrotron X-ray absorption spectrum, operando X-ray diffraction, and density functional theory computations. Cation-doped Na x Mg y Cu z Mn (1−y−z) O2 was synthesized through a facile sol-gel method followed by heat treatment. The cation-doped Na x Mg y Cu z Mn (1−y−z) O2 showed high specific capacity (203 mAh g − 1 cycled at 0.1C) as well as better cycling stability, providing sodium layered oxides a new developing stage toward high-performance cathode materials in NIBs for large scale energy storage systems. Oxygen redox chemistry in P2-Na0.6Li0.11Fe0.27Mn0.62O2 cathode for high-energy Na-ion batteries

Abstract:Owing to the abundance of raw material reserves and low cost, Na-ion batteries (NIBs) have successfully gained widespread attention from academic and industrial communities in the past few decades. However, the insufficient cathode energy density is still one of the critical bottlenecks restricting the development of NIBs. Following a strategy of introducing Li+ into the transition-metal (TM) layer to enhance the oxygen redox reaction, a novel layered cathode material P2-Na0.6Li0.11Fe0.27Mn0.62O2 (NLFMO) was designed and successfully synthesized. This NLFMO cathode not only delivers a large initial reversible capacity of 207.3 mA h g(-1), but also shows a good cycling performance (104.2 mA h g(-1) after 80 cycles) and rate capability (126.2 mA h g(-1) at 1C). The ultrahigh capacity is contributed by both cationic (Fe3+/Fe4+ and Mn3+/Mn4+) and partially reversible anionic redox (O2-/On-) reactions, revealed by in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Moreover, no detrimental P2-O2 phase transition was observed in ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, confirming the high structural stability during Na+ deintercalation/intercalation processes. These results provide valuable information about the high-energy density layered cathode materials based on anionic redox reactions for NIBs.

Abstract:A multi‐level modification strategy, including "core–shell" design, bulk heteroatom doping, and surface coating, is purposefully established to achieve a chemomechanically stable Ni‐rich O3‐layered cathode toward wide‐temperature‐N quasi‐solid‐state Na‐ion batteries. The O3‐type Ni‐rich NaNixCoyMn1−x−yO2 (x ≥ 0.6) oxides are regarded as one of the most promising cathodes for high‐capacity Na‐ion batteries (NIBs), however, they still suffer from severe structural/morphological degradation induced by complicated phase transitions, as well as sluggish de‐/sodiation kinetics. For this, a multi‐level structural/compositional modification strategy, including "core–shell" design, bulk heteroatom doping, and surface coating, is purposefully explored to construct an advanced NaNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode (denoted as T‐CSN6@A). The Ni‐rich core guarantees the high capacity, and the Mn‐rich surface region coupled with bulk Ti doping and surface Al2O3 coating reinforces the structural stability. This well‐designed architecture not only effectively inhibits the bulk and sur‐/interface structural fractures caused by repeated lattice volume variations upon cycling, but also dramatically boosts the de‐/sodiated kinetics, thus resulting in high chemomechanical stability and improved electronic/ionic transport for efficient sodium storage. When utilized as a competitive cathode, the T‐CSN6@A‐based quasi‐solid‐state NIBs are endowed with remarkable wide‐temperature‐tolerance Na‐storage behaviors within practicable working temperatures from −20 to 50 °C, along with an attractive material‐level energy density of ≈255 Wh Kg−1 at 25 °C. The feasible modification here provides a new avenue for advanced O3‐type Ni‐rich cathodes toward large‐scale industrialization of next‐generation NIBs.

Abstract:Enhancing the interfacial stability between cathode active material and liquid/solid electrolyte is a vital step toward the development of high energy density sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). One of the challenges plaguing this field is an economical and feasible method to construct valid protective layers on cathode materials. Herein, an effective strategy based on synergetic effect of multifunctional framework by simultaneous surface NaTi2(PO4)3 (NTP) coating and bulk Ti4+ doping is designed to improve the performance of P2-Na0.8Li0.12Ni0.22Mn0.66O2 (NLNM@NTP). The combined analysis of in-situ X-ray diffraction (in-situ XRD), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrates that the multifunctional framework optimizes the lattice structure, improves the Ni oxidation states and enhances the stability of crystal and interfacial structure. NLNM@NTP cathode displays high average discharge potential and fast diffusion of Na-ions and electrons. As a result, the NLNM@NTP cathode reveals highly Na storage performance in both liquid-state and solid-state SIBs. The excellent capacity retentions after 500 cycles at 5 C in liquid-state batteries and after 100 cycles at 1 C in solid-state batteries are both close to 100%.

Abstract:Layered P2-type cathodes with high voltage, large capacity, and easy synthesis show great potential for developing sodium (Na)-ion batteries (NIBs). However, the P2–O2 phase transition makes their structural degradation and the Na + /vacancy ordering lowers their redox kinetics. Here, we rationally propose a compositionally graded P2-type cathode, where nickel (Ni) and manganese (Mn) fractions decrease gradually, and cobalt (Co) content increases contiguously from the inside to the outside of a secondary particle. Inside these particles, the Ni/Mn-based compound delivers high capacity and high voltage. On the surface of particles, the Co/Mn-based solid solution offers a stable buffer matrix. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, this graded P2-type cathode shows the elimination of P2–O2 transformation even when charged to 4.4 V, which enables good structural stability, maintaining capacity retention reaching ∼ 80% within 300 cycles. Moreover, the Na + /vacancy ordering superstructure is further suppressed, and the Na + diffusion kinetics is significantly improved. The proposed graded structure with optimized chemical composition offers a new perspective for eliminating the unwanted phase transition and thus enhancing the electrochemistry of high-voltage layered cathodes for advanced NIBs.

Abstract:P2‐type layered transition metal oxide Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 is considered as a promising cathode for advanced sodium‐ion batteries due to its high theoretical specific capacity. However, the P2‐type cathode suffers severe P2‐O2 phase transition during cycling process, resulting unsatisfactory cyclic stability and rate capability. Herein, a Ca/Li co‐doped P2‐type Na0.62Ca0.05Ni0.33Mn0.57Li0.10O2 (NCNMLO) cathode material was synthesized through a simple sol‐gel method. With the synergistic effect of Ca‐doping at Na sites and Li substitution at transition metal (TM) sites, the cathode achieves an excellent electrochemical performance due to the inhibited P2‐O2 phase transition and improved ion diffusion with Na+/vacancy disordering arrangement. The NCNMLO cathode exhibits a good cyclic stability with 70.8% of capacity retention at 1 C after 200 cycles and excellent rate capability with 40.1 mAh g−1 at 20 C. The dual sites doping strategy provides an effective and simple approach for designing high‐performance layered oxide cathode materials for sodium‐ion batteries.

Abstract:For transition metal oxide materials, high Ni content is an effective method to obtain a high specific capacity. However, the theoretical capacity is determined due to the certain amount of variable charges of transition metal ions. The increased capacity in specific voltage window may attribute to the easier transport of alkali ions, instead of more active elements. Borrowing the theory of Ni-rich materials in LIB, excess Ni elements were added into P2-type layered oxide material to form the Jahn-Teller active Ni 3+ ions. About 25%-61% Ni 3+ ions can effectively promote de-/intercalation of Na + ions due to the decreased diffusion energy barrier and increased adsorption energy of Na + . The preferred "Ni-rich" material Na 0.67 Mn 0.45 Ni 0.22 Co 0.33 O 2 (Ni-R1) shows a reversible specific capacity of 114 mA h g −1 in the voltage range of 2.0–4.25 V. In addition, it shows an excellent cycle stability, the capacity retention ration is 80% after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g −1 . The in-depth study proves that, Jahn-Teller active Ni 3+ ions can effectively regulate the valence electron distribution of surrounding ions in synthesis stage. However, it will promote Jahn-Teller distortion when the Ni 3+ content is increased to 74%, which makes the rate performance deteriorate dramatically. The present work provides a simple and efficient way to increase the capacity in suitable voltage range for application.

Abstract:The major hurdle of room temperature sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) for large-scale energy storage applications lies in developing new electrode materials with higher energy/power densities and improved durability. This work presents a novel Na-P3/Li2MnO3 layered composite cathode with an alternating heteroepitaxial nanostructure fabricated by an in-situ composition modulation route. XRD structural refinement, synchrotron XAS and aberration-corrected HAADF-/ABF-STEM were employed to understand the structure evolution accompanying Li substitution. It is revealed that the in-situ formation of Li2MnO3 (Li-O’3) changes the crystallographic and chemical features of the neighboring Na-P3 layered matrix significantly and leads to the alternating Na-P3/Li-O’3 heteroepitaxial nanostructure. This alternating heteroepitaxial nanostructure delivers an extremely high reversible capacity of ~ 210 mAh g−1 between 1.5 and 4.5V vs. Na/Na+, much improved cycling stability and excellent electrode kinetics. Its enhanced electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the effective suppression of the P3-P3’’ phase transition and subsequent amorphization upon cycling to 4.5V.

Abstract:P2-Na0.67Ni0.15Mn0.85O2 layered sodium transition metal oxides have drawn much attention as a promising candidate cathode due to its high specific capacity and high working voltage. However, undesired cyclability and poor rate performance originated from the serve Jahn-Teller effect and mixed Na+/vacancy ordering during the cycle process. To address this issue, we designed a series P2-type Na0.67Ni0.15Mn0.85-xTixO2 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15) cathode by using a modified sol-gel method, and comprehensively investigated the influence of Ti doping Mn sites with the structural and electrochemical properties. It was found that Ti-substitution not only increases the interlayer distance to suppress Na+/vacancy ordering, but also reduces Mn3+ content to alleviate the Jahn-Teller effect. Notably, the Na0.67Ni0.15Mn0.80Ti0.05O2 electrode exhibited a remarkable cycling stability (85.36% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 1 C). Ti-substitution would greatly increase charge/discharge reversibility and boosts Na+ diffusion mobility kinetics, which were clearly elucidated by ex-situ X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique, respectively. This simple and effective work provides a novel strategy for developing high-performance cathode materials for practical SIBs.

Abstract:By accommodating more Na‐ions at the e‐site (Nae) in P2‐type Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 (NNMO), NNMO exhibits a similar capacity to room temperature in a wide temperature working range (−30 or 60 °C), which is attributed to the fast kinetics of the Na ions in the Nae site with a lower energy barrier compared to Naf. P2‐type Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 (NNMO) has been investigated as one of the promising cathode materials of sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) due to a low‐cost and wide‐temperature‐range adaptability. However, its application faces a number of obstacles because of the poor cycling stability and bad rate capabilities. Herein, by accommodating more Na‐ions at the e‐site (Nae) in P2‐type NNMO, which is thermodynamically more stable, P2‐type layered oxides (Nae/Naf > 1.64) with outstanding electrochemical performance are obtained. Specifically, the Na0.696Ni0.329Mn0.671O2 (NM‐2) exhibits a remarkable capacity retention of 71.9% after 1000 cycles at 1C and an excellent rate capability of 54.33 mAh g−1 at 50C. In addition, NM‐2 exhibits a wide temperature working range, even at extreme temperatures for batteries (−30 or 60 °C), it still shows a capacity close to room temperature and good cycle stability compared with 25 °C. These performances are demonstrated to be attributed to the fast kinetics of the Na ions in the Nae site, which has a lower energy barrier compared to Naf (0.8301 eV for edge sites and 1.0664 eV for face sites). This work gives a fundamental understanding of the Na‐storage mechanism in Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2, and also provides a universal strategy to improve the rate and cycling life of P2‐type layered oxide cathode materials.
