Abstract:The practical use of HKUST-1, a commercially accessible material with significant capability in adsorption-based separation, is hindered by its vulnerability to water. In the current study, we proposed a method to prepare NH 2 -SiO 2 @HKUST-1 with improved water stability and enhanced performance for cadmium removal from the water environment. FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDS, and BET studies showed that NH 2 -SiO 2 nanoparticles were successfully immobilized on HKUST-1, totally inhibiting moisture-induced performance degeneration of NH 2 -SiO 2 @HKUST-1 for cadmium removal from water. While HKUST-1 exhibited a cadmium adsorption capacity of 38.6 mg/g, NH 2 -SiO 2 @HKUST-1 demonstrated 8.4-fold better performance, a high cadmium removal capacity of 324.9 mg/g, under optimal process conditions obtained using Response Surface Methodology. The water stability tests revealed that whereas HKUST-1 lost its crystallinity and capacity for cadmium adsorption after six days of exposure to water,NH 2 -SiO 2 @HKUST-1 preserved its crystalline structure and 86% of its original cadmium removal capacity. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption of cadmium onto NH 2 -SiO 2 @HKUST-1 occurred spontaneously and that physical adsorption was the main mechanism during the process. Langmuir isotherm successfully described cadmium adsorption onto NH 2 -SiO 2 @HKUST-1. Cadmium adsorption onto NH 2 -SiO 2 @HKUST-1 reached equilibrium remarkably fast after 10 min, and the pseudo-second-order model showed that this model best describes the kinetic data.
