Abstract:Let (G,+,0) be a finite abelian group and let ηN(G) be the smallest integer l such that every sequence over G∖{0} of length l has two joint short minimal zero-sum subsequences. In 2013, Gao et al. obtained that ηN(Cn⊕Cn)=3n+1 for every n≥2 and solved the corresponding inverse problem for groups Cp⊕Cp , where p is a prime. In this paper, we determine the precise value of ηN(G) for all finite abelian groups of rank 2 and resolve the corresponding inverse problem for groups Cn⊕Cn , where n≥2 , which confirms a conjecture of Gao, Geroldinger and Wang for all n≥2 except n=4 .

Abstract:Let $G$ be an additive finite abelian group with exponent $\exp(G)$. For $L\subseteq \mathbb N$, let $\mathsf{s}_{L}(G)$ be the smallest integer $\ell$ such that every sequence $S$ over $G$ of length $\ell$ has a zero-sum subsequence $T$ of length $|T|\in L$. In this paper, we consider the invariants $\mathsf{s}_{[1,t]}(G)$ and $\mathsf{s}_{\{k\exp(G)\}}(G)$ (with $k\in \mathbb N$). We obtain precise values as well as upper bounds of the above invariants for some abelian groups of rank three. Some of these results improve previous results of Gao-Thangadurai and Han-Zhang.

Abstract:A linear group is called unisingular if every element of it has eigenvalue 1. A certain aspect of the theory of abelian varieties requires the knowledge of unisingular irreducible subgroups of the symplectic groups over the field of two elements. A more special, but an important question is on the existence of such subgroups in the symplectic groups of particular degree. We answer this question for almost all degrees $2n<250$, specifically, the question remains open only 7 values of $n$. Additionally, the paper contains results of general nature on the structure of unisingular irreducible linear groups.

Abstract:We study vanishing results for L2-cohomology of countable groups under the presence of subgroups that satisfy some weak normality condition. As a consequence we show that the L2-Betti numbers of SL(n,R) for any infinite integral domain R vanish below degree n-1. We also give a uniform proof for the vanishing of L2-Betti numbers of Thompson's groups F and T.

Abstract:The distribution of cardinalities of zero-sum sets in abelian groups is completely determined. A complex summation involving the Möbius function is given for the general abelian group, while in many special cases, including the case of elementary abelian groups, solved earlier by Li and Wan, it has a compact form. The proof involves two different Möbius transforms, on positive integers and on set partitions.

Abstract:An $S$-ring (a Schur ring) is said to be separable with respect to a class of groups $\mathcal{K}$ if every algebraic isomorphism from the $S$-ring in question to an $S$-ring over a group from $\mathcal{K}$ is induced by a combinatorial isomorphism. A finite group $G$ is said to be separable with respect to $\mathcal{K}$ if every $S$-ring over $G$ is separable with respect to $\mathcal{K}$. We prove that every abelian group $G$ of order $9p$, where $p$ is a prime, is separable with respect to the class of all finite abelian groups. Modulo previously obtained results, this completes a classification of noncyclic abelian groups of odd order that are separable with respect to the class of all finite abelian groups. Also this implies that the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension of the class of Cayley graphs over $G$ is at most 2.

Abstract:For an arbitrary ring $A$, we study the abelianization of the elementary group $\textrm{E}_2(A)$. In particular, we show that for a commutative ring $A$ there exists an exact sequence \[ K_2(2,A)/C(2,A) \to A/M \to \textrm{E}_2(A)^\textrm{ab} \to 1, \] where $C(2,A)$ is the central subgroup of the Steinberg group $\textrm{St}(2,A)$ generated by the Steinberg symbols and $M$ is the additive subgroup of $A$ generated by $x(a^2-1)$ and $3(b+1)(c+1)$, with $x\in A$, $a,b,c \in A^{\times}$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite abeilian group. A sequence $S$ with terms from $G$ is zero-sum if the sum of terms in $S$ equals zero. It is a minimal zero-sum sequence if no proper, nontrivial subsequence is zero-sum. The maximal length of a minimal zero-sum subsequence in $G$ is the Davenport constant, denoted $D(G)$. For a rank 2 group $G=C_n \oplus C_n$, it is known that $D(G)=2n-1$. However, the structure of all maximal length minimal zero-sum sequences remains open. If every such sequence contains a term with multiplicity $n-1$, then $C_n \oplus C_n$ is said to have Property B, and it is conjectured that this is true for all rank 2 groups $C_n \oplus C_n$. In this paper, we show that Property B is multiplicative, namely, if $G=C_n \oplus C_n$ and $G=C_m \oplus C_m$ both satisfy Property B, with $m, n\geq 3$ odd and $mn>9$, then $C_{mn}\oplus C_{mn}$ satisfies Property B also. Combined with previous work in the literature, this reduces the question of establishing Property B to the prime cases, and in such case the complete structural description of the sequence follows.

Abstract:In this article we study the first, the second and the third homology groups of the elementary group $\textrm{E}_2(A)$, where $A$ is a commutative ring. In particular, we prove a refined Bloch-Wigner type exact sequence over a semilocal ring (with some mild restriction on its residue fields) such that $-1\in (A^{\times})^2$ or $|A^{\times}/(A^{\times})^2|\leq 4$.

Abstract:Let G be an additive, finite abelian group. The critical number $\mathsf{cr}(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest positive integer $\ell$ such that for every subset $S \subset G \setminus \{0\}$ with $|S| \ge \ell$ the following holds: Every element of $G$ can be written as a nonempty sum of distinct elements from $S$. The critical number was first studied by P. Erdős and H. Heilbronn in 1964, and due to the contributions of many authors the value of $\mathsf {cr}(G)$ is known for all finite abelian groups $G$ except for $G \cong \mathbb{Z}/pq\mathbb{Z}$ where $p,q$ are primes such that $p+\lfloor2\sqrt{p-2}\rfloor+1<q<2p$. We determine that $\mathsf {cr}(G)=p+q-2$ for such groups.

Abstract:Let $G = K \rtimes \langle t \rangle $ be a finitely generated group where $K$ is abelian and $\langle t\rangle$ is the infinite cyclic group. Let $ R $ be a finite symmetric subset of $K$ such that $S = \{ (r,1),(0,t^{\pm 1}) \mid r \in R \}$ is a generating set of $G$. We prove that the spherical conjugacy ratio, and hence the conjugacy ratio, of $G$ with respect to $S$ is $0$ unless $G$ is virtually abelian, confirming a conjecture of Ciobanu, Cox and Martino in this case. We also show that the Baumslag--Solitar group $\mathrm{BS}(1,2)$ has a one-sided Følner sequence $F$ such that the conjugacy ratio with respect to $F$ is non-zero, even though $\mathrm{BS}(1,2)$ is not virtually abelian. This is in contrast to two-sided Følner sequences, where Tointon showed that the conjugacy ratio with respect to a two-sided Følner sequence is positive if and only if the group is virtually abelian.
