Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite abelian group and $S$ a sequence with elements of $G$. Let $|S|$ denote the length of $S$ and $\mathrm{supp}(S)$ the set of all the distinct terms in $S$. For an integer $k$ with $k\in [1, |S|]$, let $\Sigma_{k}(S) \subset G$ denote the set of group elements which can be expressed as a sum of a subsequence of $S$ with length $k$. Let $\Sigma(S)=\cup_{k=1}^{|S|}\Sigma_{k}(S)$ and $\Sigma_{\geq k}(S)=\cup_{t=k}^{|S|}\Sigma_{t}(S)$. It is known that if $0\not\in \Sigma(S)$, then $|\Sigma(S)|\geq |S|+|\mathrm{supp}(S)|-1$. In this paper, we determine the structure of a sequence $S$ satisfying $0\notin \Sigma(S)$ and $|\Sigma(S)|= |S|+|\mathrm{supp}(S)|-1$. As a consequence, we can give a counterexample of a conjecture of Gao, Grynkiewicz, and Xia. Moreover, we prove that if $|S|>k$ and $0\not\in \Sigma_{\geq k}(S)\cup \mathrm{supp}(S)$, then $|\Sigma_{\geq k}(S)|\geq |S|-k+|\mathrm{supp}(S)|$. Then we can give an alternative proof of a conjecture of Hamidoune, which was first proved by Gao, Grynkiewicz, and Xia.

Abstract:The purpose of the article is to provide an unified way to formulate zero-sum invariants. Let $G$ be a finite additive abelian group. Let $B(G)$ denote the set consisting of all nonempty zero-sum sequences over G. For $\Omega \subset B(G$), let $d_{\Omega}(G)$ be the smallest integer $t$ such that every sequence $S$ over $G$ of length $|S|\geq t$ has a subsequence in $\Omega$.We provide some first results and open problems on $d_{\Omega}(G)$.

Abstract:Let (G,+,0) be a finite abelian group and let ηN(G) be the smallest integer l such that every sequence over G∖{0} of length l has two joint short minimal zero-sum subsequences. In 2013, Gao et al. obtained that ηN(Cn⊕Cn)=3n+1 for every n≥2 and solved the corresponding inverse problem for groups Cp⊕Cp , where p is a prime. In this paper, we determine the precise value of ηN(G) for all finite abelian groups of rank 2 and resolve the corresponding inverse problem for groups Cn⊕Cn , where n≥2 , which confirms a conjecture of Gao, Geroldinger and Wang for all n≥2 except n=4 .

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite abeilian group. A sequence $S$ with terms from $G$ is zero-sum if the sum of terms in $S$ equals zero. It is a minimal zero-sum sequence if no proper, nontrivial subsequence is zero-sum. The maximal length of a minimal zero-sum subsequence in $G$ is the Davenport constant, denoted $D(G)$. For a rank 2 group $G=C_n \oplus C_n$, it is known that $D(G)=2n-1$. However, the structure of all maximal length minimal zero-sum sequences remains open. If every such sequence contains a term with multiplicity $n-1$, then $C_n \oplus C_n$ is said to have Property B, and it is conjectured that this is true for all rank 2 groups $C_n \oplus C_n$. In this paper, we show that Property B is multiplicative, namely, if $G=C_n \oplus C_n$ and $G=C_m \oplus C_m$ both satisfy Property B, with $m, n\geq 3$ odd and $mn>9$, then $C_{mn}\oplus C_{mn}$ satisfies Property B also. Combined with previous work in the literature, this reduces the question of establishing Property B to the prime cases, and in such case the complete structural description of the sequence follows.

Abstract:Let G be a finite additive abelian group with exponent exp(G) = n > 1 and let A be a nonempty subset of {1, . . . , n - 1}. In this paper, we investigate the smallest positive integer m, denoted by s(A)(G), such that any sequence {c(i)}(i=1)(m) with terms from G has a length n = exp(G) subsequence {c(ij)}(j=1)(n) for which there are a(1), . . . , a(n) is an element of A such that Sigma(n)(j=1) a(i)c(ij) = 0.When G is a p-group, A contains no multiples of p and any two distinct elements of A are incongruent mod p, we show that s(A)(G) <= inverted right perpendicularD(G)/vertical bar A vertical bar inverted left perpendicular + exp(G) - 1 if vertical bar A vertical bar is at least (D(G) - 1)/(exp(G) - 1), where D(G) is the Davenport constant of G and this upper bound for s(A)(G) in terms of vertical bar A vertical bar is essentially best possible. Abstract:Let $G$ be an additive finite abelian group of order $n$, and let $S$ be a sequence of $n+k$ elements in $G$, where $k\geq 1$. Suppose that $S$ contains $t$ distinct elements. Let $\sum_n(S)$ denote the set that consists of all elements in $G$ which can be expressed as the sum over a subsequence of length $n$. In this paper we prove that, either $0\in \sum_n(S)$ or $|\sum_n(S)|\geq k+t-1.$ This confirms a conjecture by Y.O. Hamidoune in 2000.

Abstract:Let G be an additive abelian group. The zero-sum problem for G asks for the least positive integer k such that for any a1, · · · , ak ∈ G there is an I ⊆ {1, · · · , k} of required cardinality satisfying ∑ i∈I ai = 0. In this talk we will introduce the famous theorem of P. Erdős, A. Ginzburg and A. Ziv (for G = Zn), and recent results of L. Rónya on the Kemnitz conjecture concerning the group Zn ⊕Zn, where Zn = Z/nZ is the additive cyclic group of residue classes modulo n. 1. The Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Theorem In 1961 P. Erdős, A. Ginzburg and A. Ziv [Bull. Research Council Israel, 10(1961)] established the following celebrated theorem. EGZ Theorem. Let n be any positive integer, and S = {ai} i=1 be a sequence of integers. Then there is an I ⊆ {1, · · · , 2n − 1} with |I| = n such that ∑ i∈I ai ≡ 0 (mod n). This can be viewed as the first nontrivial result on zero-sum problems. Let G be a finite additive abelian group. Abstract:Let $G$ be an additive abelian group. A sequence $S = g_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot g_{\ell}$ of terms from $G$ is a plus-minus weighted zero-sum sequence if there are $\varepsilon_1, \ldots, \varepsilon_{\ell} \in \{-1, 1\}$ such that $\varepsilon_1 g_1 + \ldots + \varepsilon_{\ell} g_{\ell}=0$. We study sets of lengths in the monoid $\mathcal B_{\pm} (G)$ of plus-minus weighted zero-sum sequences over $G$. If $G$ is finite, then sets of lengths are highly structured. If $G$ is infinite, then every finite, nonempty subset of $\mathbb N_{\ge 2}$ is the set of lengths of some sequence $S \in \mathcal B_{\pm} (G)$.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group. A zero-sum problem on G asks for the smallest positive integer k such that for any sequence a1,... ,ak of elements of G there exists a subsequence of required length the sum of whose terms vanishes. In this talk we will give a survey of problems and results in this field. In particular, we will talk about Olson's theorem on the Davenport constanst of an abelian p-group, Reiher's celebrated proof of the Kemnitz conjecture, and the speaker's extension of the Erd˝os-Ginzburg-Ziv theorem involving covers of Z.
On some zero-sum invariants for abelian groups of rank three

Abstract:Let $G$ be an additive finite abelian group with exponent $\exp(G)$. For $L\subseteq \mathbb N$, let $\mathsf{s}_{L}(G)$ be the smallest integer $\ell$ such that every sequence $S$ over $G$ of length $\ell$ has a zero-sum subsequence $T$ of length $|T|\in L$. In this paper, we consider the invariants $\mathsf{s}_{[1,t]}(G)$ and $\mathsf{s}_{\{k\exp(G)\}}(G)$ (with $k\in \mathbb N$). We obtain precise values as well as upper bounds of the above invariants for some abelian groups of rank three. Some of these results improve previous results of Gao-Thangadurai and Han-Zhang.

Thresholds for zero-sums with small cross numbers in abelian groups

Abstract:For an additive group $\Gamma$ the sequence $S = (g_1, \ldots, g_t)$ of elements of $\Gamma$ is a zero-sum sequence if $g_1 + \cdots + g_t = 0_\Gamma$. The cross number of $S$ is defined to be the sum $\sum_{i=1}^k 1/|g_i|$, where $|g_i|$ denotes the order of $g_i$ in $\Gamma$. Call $S$ good if it contains a zero-sum subsequence with cross number at most 1. In 1993, Geroldinger proved that if $\Gamma$ is abelian then every length $|\Gamma|$ sequence of its elements is good, generalizing a 1989 result of Lemke and Kleitman that had proved an earlier conjecture of Erdős and Lemke. In 1989 Chung re-proved the Lemke and Kleitman result by applying a theorem of graph pebbling, and in 2005, Elledge and Hurlbert used graph pebbling to re-prove and generalize Geroldinger's result. Here we use probabilistic theorems from graph pebbling to derive a threshold version of Geroldinger's theorem for abelian groups of a certain form. Specifically, we prove that if $p_1, \ldots, p_d$ are (not necessarily distinct) primes and $\Gamma_k$ has the form $\prod_{i=1}^d {\mathbb Z}_{p_i^k}$ then there is a function $\tau=\tau(k)$ (which we specify in Theorem 4) with the following property: if $t-\tau\rightarrow\infty$ as $k\rightarrow\infty$ then the probability that $S$ is good in $\Gamma_k$ tends to 1.

Abstract:Let G be an abelian group, and let F(G) be the free commutative monoid with basis G . For Ω⊂F(G) , define the universal zero-sum invariant dΩ(G) to be the smallest integer l such that every sequence T over G of length l has a subsequence in Ω . The invariant dΩ(G) unifies many classical zero-sum invariants. Let B(G) be the submonoid of F(G) consisting of all zero-sum sequences over G , and let A(G) be the set consisting of all minimal zero-sum sequences over G . The empty sequence, which is the identity of B(G) , is denoted by ε . The well-known Davenport constant D(G) of the group G can be also represented as dB(G)∖{ε}(G) or dA(G)(G) in terms of the universal zero-sum invariant. Notice that A(G) is the unique minimal generating set of the monoid B(G) from the point of view of Algebra. Hence, it would be interesting to determine whether A(G) is minimal to represent the Davenport constant or not for a general finite abelian group G . In this paper, we show that except for a few special classes of groups, there always exists a proper subset Ω of A(G) such that dΩ(G)=D(G) . Furthermore, in the setting of finite cyclic groups, we discuss the distributions of all minimal sets by determining their intersections. By connecting the universal zero-sum invariant with weights, we make a study of zero-sum problems in the setting of infinite abelian groups. The universal zero-sum invariant dΩ;Ψ(G) with weights set Ψ of homomorphisms of groups is introduced for all abelian groups. The weighted Davenport constant DΨ(G) (being an special form of the universal invariant with weights) is also investigated for infinite abelian groups. Among other results, we obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions such that DΨ(G)<∞ in terms of the weights set Ψ when |Ψ| is finite. In doing this, by using the Neumann Theorem on Cover Theory for groups we establish a connection between the existence of a finite cover of an abelian group G by cosets of some given subgroups of G , and the finiteness of weighted Davenport constant.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite abelian group with $\exp(G)$ the exponent of $G$. Then $\mathsf W(G)$ denotes the set of cross numbers of minimal zero-sum sequences over $G$ and $\mathsf w(G)$ denotes the set of all cross numbers of non-trivial zero-sum free sequences over $G$. It is clear that $\mathsf W(G)$ and $\mathsf w(G)$ are bounded subsets of $\frac{1}{\exp(G)}\mathbb{N}$ with maximum $ \mathsf K(G)$ and $\mathsf k(G)$, respectively (here $\mathsf{K}(G)$ and $\mathsf{k}(G)$ denote the large and the small cross number of $G$, respectively). We give results on the structure of $\mathsf W(G)$ and $\mathsf w(G)$. We first show that both sets contain long arithmetic progressions and that only close to the maximum there might be some gaps. Then, we provide groups for which $\mathsf W(G)$ and $\mathsf w(G)$ actually are arithmetic progressions, and argue that this is rather a rare phenomenon. Finally, we provide some results in case there are gaps.

Abstract:The distribution of cardinalities of zero-sum sets in abelian groups is completely determined. A complex summation involving the Möbius function is given for the general abelian group, while in many special cases, including the case of elementary abelian groups, solved earlier by Li and Wan, it has a compact form. The proof involves two different Möbius transforms, on positive integers and on set partitions.

Abstract:Let n be a positive even integer, and let a_1,...,a_n and w_1, ..., w_n be integers satisfying ∑_k=1^n a_k≡∑_k=1^n w_k =0 (mod n). A conjecture of Bialostocki states that there is a permutation σ on 1,...,n such that ∑_k=1^n w_k a_σ(k)=0 (mod n). In this paper we confirm the conjecture when w_1,...,w_n form an arithmetic progression with even common difference.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite cyclic semigroup written additively. An element $e$ of $\mathcal{S}$ is said to be idempotent if $e+e=e$. A sequence $T$ over $\mathcal{S}$ is called {\sl idempotent-sum free} provided that no idempotent of $\mathcal{S}$ can be represented as a sum of one or more terms from $T$. We prove that an idempotent-sum free sequence over $\mathcal{S}$ of length over approximately a half of the size of $\mathcal{S}$ is well-structured. This result generalizes the Savchev-Chen Structure Theorem for zero-sum free sequences over finite cyclic groups.

Disjoint zero-sum subsets in Abelian groups and its application -- survey

Abstract:We provide a summary of research on disjoint zero-sum subsets in finite Abelian groups, which is a branch of additive group theory and combinatorial number theory. An orthomorphism of a group $\Gamma$ is defined as a bijection $\varphi$ $\Gamma$ such that the mapping $g \mapsto g^{-1}\varphi(g)$ is also bijective. In 1981, Friedlander, Gordon, and Tannenbaum conjectured that when $\Gamma$ is Abelian, for any $k \geq 2$ dividing $|\Gamma| -1$, there exists an orthomorphism of $\Gamma$ fixing the identity and permuting the remaining elements as products of disjoint $k$-cycles. Using the idea of disjoint-zero sum subset we provide a solution of this conjecture for $k=3$ and $|\Gamma|\cong 4\pmod{24}$. We also present some applications of zero-sum sets in graph labeling.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite additive abelian group with exponent $n>1$, and let $a_1,\ldots,a_{n-1}\in G$. We show that there is a permutation $\sigma\in S_{n-1}$ such that all the elements $sa_{\sigma(s)}\ (s=1,\ldots,n-1)$ are nonzero if and only if $$\left|\left\{1\le s<n:\ \frac{n}{d}a_s\ne 0\right\}\right|\ge d-1\ \ \textrm{ for every positive divisor }\ d\ \textrm{ of }\ n.$$ When $G$ is the cyclic group $\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z$, this confirms a conjecture of Z.-W. Sun.
