Abstract:The growing population, intensified anthropogenic pressures and climate variability have increased the demands on available water resources, and water reuse has become a high priority, particularly in areas of the world suffering from water stress. The main objectives of this review paper are to consider and identify the potential opportunities and challenges in the implementation of water reuse schemes worldwide by considering and analyzing different fields of interest in water reuse, the current and future global drivers of water reuse policies, the existing advances in treatment and reuse technologies promising elimination of environmental footprint and human health risk, an analysis of the trends in potable and non-potable reuse, and the development of quality criteria and issues related to transition circular economy. Moreover, the major knowledge gaps in critical issues on different domains of water reuse schemes are discussed. For this study, a thorough analysis of the current literature was conducted, using research and review articles, technical reports, specific national (and EU) proposals, guidance documents, and legislative initiatives and actions, as well as any validly disseminated findings by scientists around the world in the wider scientific area of (alternative) water resources, water supply, water management, sustainable development, and protection of public health. Water reuse practices are expected to increase in the future, mainly in developed countries and climate-vulnerable areas of the planet. Current advances in wastewater treatment and water reuse technologies can provide the opportunity for the foul exploitation of alternative water resources, increasing the potential of potable and non-potable water reuse systems worldwide, relying on pollutant/contaminant elimination, and improving economic and energy performances. Moreover, paradigmatic and technological switches based on an improved understanding of the relationships between the water cycle and the Water–Energy–Food (WEF) Nexus will increase the perspective of water reuse schemes. The benefits of the recovery of nutrients through sewage wastewater treatment are also highlighted, arising from reduced costs associated with their sheer removal and the supplement of fertilizers to the WEF Nexus. On the other hand, reduced nutrient removal may promote agricultural or landscape reuse practices, contributing to less energy consumption and reducing GHGs emissions. Regarding the management of water use schemes, a holistic approach (integrated management) is proposed, incorporating regulatory actions, actions increasing public awareness, interconnection among actors/stakeholders, and efficient control and monitoring. The establishment of quality criteria is paramount to preventing undesirable impacts on humans and the environment. The study considers the "one water" concept, which means equal water quality criteria independent of the origin of water, and instead differentiates among different types of water reuse as a means to facilitate implementation and management of potable and non-potable water reuse. Finally, it highlights the need to understand the impacts of water reuse systems on ecosystem services (ESs) and the consequences of achieving the global sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Abstract:Recycling water from municipal wastewater offers a reliable and sustainable solution to cities and regions facing short-age of water supply. Places including California and Singapore have developed advanced water reuse programs as an integral part of their water management strategy. Membrane technology, particularly reverse osmosis, has been playing a key role in producing high quality recycled water. This feature paper highlights the current status and future perspectives of advanced membrane processes to meet potable water reuse. Recent advances in membrane materials and process configurations are presented and opportunities and challenges are identified in the context of water reuse.

Abstract:Water is crucial for economic development since it interacts with the agricultural, production, and energy sectors. However, the increasing demand and climate change put pressure on water sources. This paper argued the necessity of using reclaimed water for irrigation within the scope of a circular economy. The barriers (i.e., technological and economic, institutional/regulatory, and social) to water reuse practices were revealed. Lessons on how to overcome the barriers were learned from good practices. The roadmaps adopted in the European Union for the transition towards the circular economy were reviewed. It has been observed that these roadmaps are generally on the circularity of solid wastes. However, water is too important for the economy to be ignored in the transition towards circular economy. Research needs and perspective for a comprehensive roadmap to widen water-smart solutions such as water reuse were drawn.

Abstract:From the beginning of the Bronze Age (ca. 3200–1100 BC), domestic wastewater (sewage) has been used for irrigation and aquaculture by a number of civilizations including those that developed in China and the Orient, Egypt, the Indus Valley, Mesopotamia, and Crete. In historic times (ca. 1000 BC−330 AD), wastewater was disposed of or used for irrigation and fertilization purposes by the Greek and later Roman civilizations, especially in areas surrounding important cities (e.g., Athens and Rome). In more recent times, the practice of land application of wastewater for disposal and agricultural use was utilized first in European cities and later in USA. Today, water reclamation and reuse projects are being planned and implemented throughout the world. Recycled water is now used for almost any purpose including potable use. This paper provides a brief overview of the evolution of water reuse over the last 5,000 years, along with current practice and recommendations for the future. Understanding the practices and solutions of the past, provides a lens with which to view the present and future.

Abstract:The growing global water crisis has increased the need for alternative water sources. Among the potential solutions to mitigate the current challenging situation, water reuse has been considered and implemented, especially during the past decade. Public perception/acceptance represents one of the most common challenges related to the wide implementation of water reuse. To evaluate its public awareness and better understand the reasons behind the public skepticism for outdoor and indoor activities, a survey was conducted in the Southeast United States. The survey included open-ended questions, questions with five-point Likert scales, and multiple-choice questions. A total of 203 responses were considered for the final analysis. Participants, mostly in the 18-60 age range, hold at least a high school diploma (94 %). The age of the participants had an association with the knowledge related to the wastewater treatment method adopted in their household (chi squared, X2 = 28.8, p = 0.055). Participants 1) selected the U.S. EPA as the most credible organization in the field of drinking water, 2) were more willing to use recycled water for removing road dust, watering private yards or non-edible crops, public toilets, and firefighting than for watering edible crops/orchards or livestock feed, and 3) were reluctant to use recycled water when direct-human contact or ingestion can occur. While only 8 % were willing to use recycled water for drinking, the addition of further treatments combined with environmental regulations, frequent sampling campaigns, and educational activities highlighting possible treatments and potential benefits related to water reuse, will increase the participants' willingness to implement water reuse more widely.

Abstract:This study advances the discourse on the transition from a linear to a circular water paradigm, within which water is reused and resources such as nutrients and energy can be recovered. The research provides an empirical evidence from demonstrative cases, identifying the technological, economic, socio-cultural, and regulatory factors that facilitate or impede the broader adoption of circular solutions in the water sector. It proposes an integrated system approach, which encompasses a comprehensive set of enabling instruments, including (a) the demonstration of the sustainability of circular water technologies at a system level, thereby providing a robust proof of concept; (b) a shift from a conventional financial cost-benefit approach to a business model predicated on circular value chains, underscoring the economic feasibility of these solutions; (c) the enhancement of social acceptance through active stakeholder engagement, thereby fostering a supportive community for these transformative changes; and (d) the adaptation of the regulatory framework to incentivise circular water solutions, such as the establishment of dedicated end-of-waste criteria to facilitate market access for recovered resources. The study concludes that a concerted effort is required to reconceptualise our water systems as circular systems, and to legitimise the role of circular water within our society and economy.

Abstract:Water scarcity, either due to increased urbanisation or climatic variability, has motivated societies to reduce pressure on water resources mainly by reducing water demand. However, this practice alone is not sufficient to guarantee the quality of life that high quality water services underpin, especially within a context of increased urbanisation. As such, the idea of water reuse has been gaining momentum for some time and has recently found a more general context within the idea of the Circular Economy. This paper is set within the context of an ongoing discussion between centralized and decentralized water reuse techniques and the investigation of trade-offs between efficiency and economic viability of reuse at different scales. Specifically, we argue for an intermediate scale of a water reuse option termed 'sewer-mining', which could be considered a reuse scheme at the neighbourhood scale. We suggest that sewer mining (a) provides a feasible alternative reuse option when the geography of the wastewater treatment plant is problematic, (b) relies on mature treatment technologies and (c) presents an opportunity for Small Medium Enterprises (SME) to be involved in the water market, securing environmental, social and economic benefits. To support this argument, we report on a pilot sewer-mining application in Athens, Greece. The pilot, integrates two subsystems: a packaged treatment unit and an information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure. The paper reports on the pilot's overall performance and critically evaluates the potential of the sewer-mining idea to become a significant piece of the circular economy puzzle for water.

Abstract:Conventional water and drainage system provide people with clean water and sewer, and protect surface water against eutrophication. Today, essentially all of the water used in Swedish society is water of drinking water quality according to the Swedish Food Administration's regulations. As the water and drainage system works today, it consumes energy, chemicals and other resources at a level that hardly can be considered sustainable. Water of drinking water quality is used as flushing water in our toilets, for washing cars, facades, workshop floors, patios, lawn irrigation and many other uses. Drought in the Kalmar / Oland region in 2016, and even declining groundwater levels in 2017, has put the development of a sustainable water and drainage system in Kalmar on the agenda. A sustainable water and drainage system is not just about how drinking water is produced and how wastewater and storm water are treated, but also about how water resources are used in a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable manner. This project will contribute to the development of a more sustainable water and drainage system in Sweden. The purpose of the project is to investigate legal, economic, technical, environmental and health conditions for water reuse in Sweden with a big focus on end-users' needs. The following reuse areas will be explored: potable reuse, non-potable urban reuse, industrial reuse, and reuse in irrigation for agriculture and landscapes. The project will show the best reuse areas in Kalmar from an environmental and cost-effective perspective.

Abstract:Water shortage and water environmental pollution have promoted the development of wastewater reclamation and reuse in China in recent years. Different treatment processes are employed for this purpose, such as pond-farmland systems using solar radiation as initial energy source, treating wastewater at low cost and low energy consumption to realize wastewater reclamation and reuse for irrigation on farmland to provide both water and nutrients. Some full-scale projects on municipal wastewater reclamation mainly based on activated sludge and/or submerged biofilm processes followed by some advanced treatment processes such as filtration and disinfecting, from which the effluent is reused in agriculture, industry and domestic uses except for drinking purpose have been built and put into operation in some water shortage cities, which are described in this paper. In some water scarce cities the domestic wastewater reclamation and reuse (dual water system) is employed for a building, a group of buildings or a sub-residential district, whose treatment system consists of submerged biofilm process, dual-media filter and disinfection.

Abstract:The current treatment of wastewater has unintended negative environmental impacts. Conventional methods frequently involve the use of harmful chemicals, generate disinfectant by-products, consume significant amounts of energy, and produce wastes requiring additional efforts for safe disposal. Water stress exacerbated by contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and climate change, is further straining aging treatment systems. A slow sand filter (SSF), with ligno-cellulosic layers, offers a novel, promising, and economic alternative for wastewater reclamation. This review examines the key SSF characteristics, obtained from recent studies, and explores the use of sustainable materials such as ligno-cellulose, as a treatment companion. The optimal SSF design includes a bed depth of >0.6 m, particle effective size (D10) between 0.15 mm and 0.40 mm, and a uniformity coefficient (CU grain size ratio) of ≤2.0. It is established that SSF's characteristic biolayer of microorganisms enhances contaminant removal via biodegradation. While biofilm-based removal of micropollutants is a proven mechanism, further research is needed to address CEC challenges. For example, the inclusion of sawdust in SSF filter layers can reduce energy consumption compared to conventional methods and can be recycled through thermal conversion, aligning with circular economy principles. This approach has the potential to improve wastewater treatment in emerging economies, contributing to the achievement of the UN Sustainability Goals.

Abstract:Waterworks sludge refers to the inevitable suspended and dissolved solids produced during the water purification process when producing tap water where Al-salt and/or Fe-salt are used as coagulant worldwide. Waterworks sludge is dewatered and the resultant cakes have been treated as "waste" for landfill as their major final disposal solution for a long time in practice. As waterworks sludge is the residual of potable water treatment process, it is not harmful and without toxic elements such as heavy metals in most cases in comparison to sewage sludges for instance. Actually, waterworks sludge is an underrated material with huge potential for beneficial reuse as raw material in water and environmental engineering. However, little was significantly progressed on this topic until the last two decades. Research and development (R&D) with special interest and focus on waterworks sludge reuse was conducted in our group in the last 15 years and this paper reports and discusses the main work and its novel application profile. Overall, it is believed that the R&D of waterworks sludge is useful and will help to develop national strategy of the entire waterworks sludge management, allowing its transformation from a "waste" into value-added products, and thus contribute to sustainable development.

Abstract:With the scarcity of water resources and the development of recycled water production technology, the promotion of global recycled water use is attracting more and more attention. An increasing number of publications have examined the reuse of recycled water from different perspectives to promote the sustainable use of global water resources. The purpose of this research is to systematically and comprehensively evaluate the knowledge structure, development trends, research hotspots, and frontier predictions in the global research field of recycled water use. Based on 910 screened articles from the Web of Science Core Collection from 1990 to 2020, this paper visualizes and analyzes recycled water use from the perspectives of scientific output characteristics, research collaboration networks, highly cited articles and core journals, and keywords. The results indicate that research interest in recycled water use is on the rise. Authoritative experts, high-impact institutions, and core journals are also identified. The study shows that water resources management, public health, and public acceptance are all hot topics and frontiers of research. This study provides valuable guidance for researchers to support recycled water research directions and regulatory authorities for the interest in recycled water use.

Abstract:Building construction requires important amounts of freshwater, thus depleting the already stressed natural water resources. This issue could be addressed by using recycled water in construction and in building systems. However, integrating greywater recycling systems is limited by complexity, costs, vulnerability to environmental fluctuations, and coordination of policymakers, developers, and construction practitioners. Here, we review recycled water systems in buildings with focus on case studies of successful implementations, policies, recycled water treatment in buildings, and health aspects. Compared to conventional tap water, the incorporation of recycled water enhances the consistency and workability of reclaimed water concrete by 12–14%, and it increases concrete viscosity by 11% and yield stress by 25%. We discuss the intricacies of building water recycling systems, with emphasizing on conserving water, mitigating environmental impact, and enhancing economic efficiency. Challenges include water quality assurance, dual piping infrastructure, and regulatory compliance. Government interventions, including incentives, mandates, and subsidy policies, emerge as drivers for widespread adoption. Technological advancements, such as membrane filtration and advanced oxidation processes, are examined for strengths and limitations.
