I will empty it, be my guest: A pragmatic study of toasting in Chinese culture

Abstract:<p>The aim of this article is to explore, from a pragmatic perspective, the major types, verbal forms, and main functions of Chinese toasting, by analyzing 158 cases of Chinese toast taken from TV series and films. Particular attention is paid to how the cultural, moral, and emotional characteristics of Chinese toasting are communicated. This study finds that Chinese toast has two main types: courteous toast (<em>non-aggressive toast</em>) which is constructed using vocative empathy, mitigated directives and expressives like gratitude, blessing, and approbation; and coercive toast (<em>aggressive toast</em>) constructed by provocation, insult, or threat. We argue that Chinese toast is not only a matter of etiquette but also has a very clear practical function as it detects sincerity and compliance, while highlighting a sense of courtesy. By analyzing the toasting performance, an insight is provided into the cultural pragmatic veins of Chinese society, where power, morality, and social distance are of great relevance.</p>
