Abstract:Superconductivity has been discovered recently in nickel based 112 infinite thin films R1-xAxNiO2 (R = La, Nd, Pr and A = Sr, Ca). They are isostructural to the infinite-layer cuprate (Ca,Sr)CuO2 and are supposed to have a formal Ni 3d9 valence, thus providing a new platform to study the unconventional pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductors. This important discovery immediately triggers a huge amount of innovative scientific curiosity in the field. In this paper, we try to give an overview of the recent research progress on the newly found superconducting nickelate systems, both from experimental and theoretical aspects. We will focus mainly on the electronic structures, magnetic excitations, phase diagrams, superconducting gaps and finally make some open discussions for possible pairing symmetries in Ni based 112 systems.

Abstract:lthough high-transition-temperature (high- T c ) superconductivity in cuprates has been known for more than three decades, the underlying mechanism remains unknown 1 – 4 . Cuprates are the only unconventional superconductors that exhibit bulk superconductivity with T c above the liquid-nitrogen boiling temperature of 77 K. Here we observe that high-pressure resistance and mutual inductive magnetic susceptibility measurements showed signatures of superconductivity in single crystals of La 3 Ni 2 O 7 with maximum T c of 80 K at pressures between 14.0 GPa and 43.5 GPa. The superconducting phase under high pressure has an orthorhombic structure of Fmmm space group with the 3d_x^2-y^2 and 3d_z^2 orbitals of Ni cations strongly mixing with oxygen 2 p orbitals. Our density functional theory calculations indicate that the superconductivity emerges coincidently with the metallization of the σ-bonding bands under the Fermi level, consisting of the 3d_z^2 orbitals with the apical oxygen ions connecting the Ni–O bilayers. Thus, our discoveries provide not only important clues for the high- T c superconductivity in this Ruddlesden–Popper double-layered perovskite nickelates but also a previously unknown family of compounds to investigate the high- T c superconductivity mechanism.

Abstract:The 1987's Nobel Prize in Physics celebrated the discovery of high‐temperature unconventional superconductivity in a ceramic – copper oxide Ba‐La‐Cu‐O with the onset of superconductivity in the 30 K range at ambient pressure. Non‐copper‐based oxides, however, have yet to demonstrate similar high‐temperature superconductivity Tc > 30 K. Recently, breakthroughs in nickel oxides reignited the passion to achieve and study the high‐Tc superconductivity in ceramics. Unconventional high‐temperature superconductivity has long been a captivating puzzle in condensed matter physics. The 1987 Nobel Prize in Physics celebrated the discovery of high‐temperature superconductivity in copper oxide ceramics. Nearly four decades later, a broad class of high‐temperature superconducting oxides has yet to be demonstrated, and the fundamental understanding of the pairing mechanism remains inconclusive. Recently, nickel oxides have emerged as a new class of high‐temperature superconductors, beyond copper, where correlated phases can be controlled by doping, pressure, strain, and dimensionality. In this article, we provide our perspective on the recent developments and prospects of the nickel age of high‐temperature superconductivity.

High-temperature Superconductivity with Zero-Resistance and Strange Metal Behavior in La_3Ni_2O_7-δ

Abstract:Recently signatures of superconductivity were observed close to 80 K in under pressure. This discovery positions as the first bulk nickelate with high-temperature superconductivity, but the lack of zero resistance presents a significant drawback for validating the findings. Here we report pressure measurements up to over 30 GPa using a liquid pressure medium and show that single crystals of do exhibit zero resistance. We find that remains metallic under applied pressures, suggesting the absence of a metal-insulator transition proximate to the superconductivity. Analysis of the normal state T-linear resistance suggests an intricate link between this strange metal behaviour and superconductivity, whereby at high pressures both the linear resistance coefficient and superconducting transition are slowly suppressed by pressure, while at intermediate pressures both the superconductivity and strange metal behaviour appear disrupted, possibly due to a nearby structural instability. The association between strange metal behaviour and high-temperature superconductivity is very much in line with diverse classes of unconventional superconductors, including the cuprates and Fe-based superconductors. Understanding the superconductivity of evidently requires further revealing the interplay of strange metal behaviour, superconductivity, as well as possible competing electronic or structural phases.

Abstract:The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity near 80 K in bilayer nickelate La 3 Ni 2 O 7 under high pressures has renewed the exploration of superconducting nickelate in bulk materials. The extension of superconductivity in other nickelates in a broader family is also essential. Here, we report the experimental observation of superconducting signature in trilayer nickelate La 4 Ni 3 O 10 under high pressures. By using a modified sol-gel method and post-annealing treatment under high oxygen pressure, we successfully obtained polycrystalline La 4 Ni 3 O 10 samples with different transport behaviors at ambient pressure. Then we performed high-pressure electrical resistance measurements on these samples in a diamond-anvil-cell apparatus. Surprisingly, the signature of possible superconducting transition with a maximum transition temperature ( T c ) of about 20 K under high pressures is observed, as evidenced by a clear drop of resistance and the suppression of resistance drops under magnetic fields. Although the resistance drop is sample-dependent and relatively small, it appears in all of our measured samples. We argue that the observed superconducting signal is most likely to originate from the main phase of La 4 Ni 3 O 10 . Our findings will motivate the exploration of superconductivity in a broader family of nickelates and shed light on the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of high- T c superconductivity in nickelates.

Abstract:Recent experimental observations have showed some signatures of superconductivity close to 80 K in La 3 Ni 2 O 7 under pressure and have raised the hope of achieving high-temperature superconductivity in bulk nickelates. However, a zero-resistance state—a key characteristic of a superconductor—was not observed. Here we show that the zero-resistance state does exist in single crystals of La 3 Ni 2 O 7− δ using a liquid pressure medium at up to 30 GPa. We also find that the system remains metallic under applied pressures, suggesting the absence of a metal–insulator transition proximate to the superconductivity. Moreover, analysis of the normal state T -linear resistance reveals a link between this strange-metal behaviour and superconductivity. The association between strange-metal behaviour and high-temperature superconductivity is very much in line with other classes of unconventional superconductors, including the cuprates and Fe-based superconductors. Further investigations exploring the interplay of strange-metal behaviour and superconductivity, as well as possible competing electronic or structural phases, are essential to understand the mechanism of superconductivity in this system.

High-temperature Superconducting Oxide without Copper at Ambient Pressure

Abstract:The discovery of superconductivity in the Ba-La-Cu-O system (the cuprate) at the 30 K range in 1986 marked a significant breakthrough, as it far exceeded the highest known critical temperature ($T_c$) at the time and surpassed the predicted 30 K limit, which was thought to be the maximum before phonon-mediated electron pairing would break down due to thermal excitation. Despite recent successful observations of superconductivity in nickel-oxide-based compounds (the nickelate), superconductivity above 30 K at ambient pressure in a system that is isostructural and isoelectronic to the cuprate but without copper has remained elusive. Here, we report a superconducting $T_c$ above 35 K under ambient pressure in hole-doped, late rare-earth infinite-layer nickel oxide (Sm-Eu-Ca-Sr)NiO$_2$ thin films. Electron microscopy reveals a small thickness of ~2 nm of infinite-layer phase stabilised at present, which indicates a higher temperature superconductivity should be observable in clean bulk crystals.

Abstract:High-temperature unconventional superconductivity quite generically emerges from doping a strongly correlated parent compound, often (close to) an antiferromagnetic insulator. The recently developed dynamical vertex approximation is a state-of-the-art technique that has quantitatively predicted the superconducting dome of nickelates. Here, we apply it to study the effect of pressure in the infinite-layer nickelate Sr$_x$Pr$_ {1-x}$NiO$_2$. We reproduce the increase of the critical temperature ($T_c$) under pressure found in experiment up to 12 GPa. According to our results, $T_c$ can be further increased with higher pressures. Even without Sr-doping the parent compound, PrNiO$_2$, will become a high-temperature superconductor thanks to a strongly enhanced self-doping of the \nidxsqysq{} orbital under pressure. With a maximal \Tc{} of 100\,K around 100\,GPa, nickelate superconductors can reach that of the best cuprates.

Probing the Meissner effect in pressurized bilayer nickelate superconductors using diamond quantum sensors

Abstract:Recent reports on the signatures of high-temperature superconductivity with a critical temperature Tc close to 80 K have triggered great research interest and extensive follow-up studies. Although zero-resistance state has been successfully achieved under improved hydrostatic pressure conditions, there is no clear evidence of superconducting diamagnetism in pressurized $\mathrm{La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7-\delta}}$ due to the low superconducting volume fraction and limited magnetic measurement techniques under high pressure conditions. Here, using shallow nitrogen-vacancy centers implanted on the culet of diamond anvils as in-situ quantum sensors, we observe convincing evidence for the Meissner effect in polycrystalline samples $\mathrm{La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7-\delta}}$ and $\mathrm{La_{2}PrNi_{2}O_{7}}$: the magnetic field expulsion during both field cooling and field warming processes. The correlated measurements of Raman spectra and NV-based magnetic imaging indicate an incomplete structural transformation related to the displacement of oxygen ions emerging in the non-superconducting region. Furthermore, comparative experiments on different pressure transmitting media (silicone oil and KBr) and nickelates ($\mathrm{La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7-\delta}}$ and $\mathrm{La_{2}PrNi_{2}O_{7}}$) reveal that an improved hydrostatic pressure conditions and the substitution of La by Pr in $\mathrm{La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7-\delta}}$ can dramatically increase the superconductivity. Our work clarifies the controversy about the Meissner effect of bilayer nickelate and contributes to a deeper understanding of the mechanism of nickelate high-temperature superconductors.

Abstract:The recent discovery of superconductivity in pressurized Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) of nickelates has potential similarities with cuprate superconductors, which may provide unique perspectives on the mechanisms of high-temperature superconductivity. Up to now, most of high-pressure experiments concentrated on the lanthanum-related RP phase. Therefore, the discovery of new superconducting nickelate compounds is highly desired to explore the generality of pressure-induced superconductivity in RP nickelates. Here, we grow high-quality Pr4Ni3O10 single crystal with an optical floating zone furnace under high oxygen pressure and conduct high-pressure transport measurements with various pressure transmitting mediums. The density wave in Pr4Ni3O10 single crystal was suppressed by pressure, accompanying the arising of superconducting state beyond 10 GPa. The maximum and unsaturated Tc of 39 K is obtained within our research pressure. Although zero resistivity was not achieved in our experiments, the pressure and temperature-dependent diamagnetism along with the systematic evolution of resistivity with applied magnetic field, corroborate the superconductivity in Pr4Ni3O10 single crystals. Our findings provide a new platform for the investigation of the relationship among structural evolution, magnetism, correlation, and superconductivity in Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates.

Abstract:The successful synthesis of superconducting nickelate thin films with the highest T c ~ 15 K has reignited great enthusiasms on this class of potential analogue to high- T c cuprates suggested decades ago. To pursue higher T c is always an important task in studying new superconductors. Here we report for the first time the effect of pressure on the superconducting properties of infinite-layer Pr 0.82 Sr 0.18 NiO 2 thin films by measuring electrical resistivity under various pressures in a cubic anvil cell apparatus. We find that the onset of superconductivity, T c onset , can be enhanced monotonically from ~ 18 K at ambient pressure to ~ 31 K without showing signatures of saturation upon increasing pressure to 12.1 GPa in the presence of liquid pressure transmitting medium. This encouraging result indicates that the T c of infinite-layer nickelates superconductors can be further raised up by applying higher pressures or strain engineering in the heterostructure films. In addition to the pressure effect, we also discussed the influence of stress/strain on the superconducting properties of the nickelate thin films.

Abstract:The discovery of nickelate superconductivity provided the first example of a non-copper-based material with superconductivity strongly analogous to the cuprates, but recent findings raise questions and inconsistencies around the electron counts and doping phase diagrams. We show using superconducting La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ that there are unconventional interlayer and interorbital intrinsic doping effects that render the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital occupation similar to the cuprates. The results enable a consistent framework for nickelate superconductivity, while maintaining the connection between cuprate and nickelate superconductors.

Signature of Superconductivity in Pressurized Trilayer-nickelate Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10-δ}$

Abstract:The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ under pressure has drawn extensive attention. Herein, we report systematic investigations on the evolutions of structure, magnetism, and electrical resistance of Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10-\delta}$ polycrystalline samples under various pressures. Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10-\delta}$ exhibits density wave transitions on Ni and Pr sublattices at about 158 K and 4.3 K, respectively, and the density wave can be progressively suppressed by pressure. A structural transformation from the monoclinic $P2_1/a$ space group to the tetragonal $I4/mmm$ occurs at around 20 GPa. An apparent drop in resistance with evident magnetic field dependence is observed as pressure above 20 GPa, indicating the emergence of superconductivity in Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10-\delta}$ polycrystalline samples. The discovery of the signature of superconductivity in Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10-\delta}$ broadens the family of nickelate superconductors and provides a new platform for investigating the mechanisms of superconductivity in the Ruddlesden-Popper phases of nickelates.

Abstract:Recent experimental observations have showed some signatures of superconductivity close to 80 K in La3Ni2O7 under pressure and have raised the hope of achieving high-temperature superconductivity in bulk nickelates. However, a zero-resistance state-a key characteristic of a superconductor-was not observed. Here we show that the zero-resistance state does exist in single crystals of La3Ni2O7-delta using a liquid pressure medium at up to 30 GPa. We also find that the system remains metallic under applied pressures, suggesting the absence of a metal-insulator transition proximate to the superconductivity. Moreover, analysis of the normal state T-linear resistance reveals a link between this strange-metal behaviour and superconductivity. The association between strange-metal behaviour and high-temperature superconductivity is very much in line with other classes of unconventional superconductors, including the cuprates and Fe-based superconductors. Further investigations exploring the interplay of strange-metal behaviour and superconductivity, as well as possible competing electronic or structural phases, are essential to understand the mechanism of superconductivity in this system.

Abstract:Recently, superconductivity with Tc ≈ 80 K was discovered in La3Ni2O7 under extreme hydrostatic pressure (>14 GPa). For practical applications, we needed to stabilize this state at ambient pressure. It was proposed that this could be accomplished by substituting La with Ba. To put this hypothesis to the test, we used the state-of-the-art atomic-layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy (ALL-MBE) technique to synthesize (La1−xBax)3Ni2O7 films, varying x and the distribution of La (lanthanum) and Ba (barium). Regrettably, none of the compositions we explored could be stabilized epitaxially; the targeted compounds decomposed immediately into a mixture of other phases. So, this path to high-temperature superconductivity in nickelates at ambient pressure does not seem promising.
