Abstract:Results given in this paper are threefold. In the case of Hertzian line contact, a new load/deformation relationship is derived analytically and use is made of the thickness of the outer race section. A minor effect of the section thickness is shown. The exponent on the deformation is 1.074 (instead of 1.1 usually accepted). Results calculated with the new relationship are successfully compared to results calculated with other published relationships and also are compared successfully to some available experimental results. For the case of point contact, useful relationships, obtained by curve-fitting, are given to calculate easily the load versus deformation, maximum Hertzian pressure and ellipse contact dimension as a function of a dimensionless load parameter and ratio k of equivalent radii (instead of sum of curvatures and elliptical integrals before). A large range of k is covered, from 0.05 (found at roller rib contact) to 13,000 to cover all bearing cases, from ball bearings to spherical and tapered roller bearings. Finally, an important analytical relationship, based on curve-fitting, also is suggested to describe a smooth transition from point contact to line contact as the load increases. It is recommended to define bearing setting and bearing preload with the suggested relationship.

Abstract:Firstly, the extended Boussinesq and Cerruti solutions for point forces and point charge acting on the surface of a transversely isotropic piezoelectric half-space are derived. Secondly, aiming at a series of common three-dimensional contact including spherical contact, a conical indentor and an upright circular flat punch on a transversely isotropic piezoelectric half-space, we solve for their elastic and electric fields in smooth and frictional cases by first evaluating the displacement functions and then differentiating. The displacement functions can be obtained by integrating the extended Boussinesq or Cerruti solutions in the contact region. Then, when only normal pressure is loaded, the stresses in the half-space of PZT-4 piezoelectric ceramic are compared in the figures with those of the transversely isotropic material which are assumed to have the same elastic constants as those of PZT-4. Meanwhile, the electric components in the half-space of PZT-4 piezoelectric ceramic are also shown in the same figures.

Abstract:<p>According to the Hertz's contact theory (HCT) and considering the strain hardening of materials, an effective calculation method is proposed for solving the elasto-plastic contact pressure and the contact patch size under arbitrary smooth and continuous contact conditions. Firstly, it is assumed that the outer and inner edges of the contact patch are elastic and elasto-plastic contact zones, respectively, the contact pressure in the elastic contact zone satisfies the HCT, while the contact pressure in the elasto-plastic contact zone is the superposition of a constant contact pressure and several small ellipsoidal distribution contact pressures. Then, the explicit expressions of contact patch size and contact pressure under the elasto-plastic elliptical, circular and line contact conditions are derived, respectively. Subsequently, the accuracy and applicability of the proposed method are evaluated by comparing the predicted results with the finite element simulations. Finally, the accuracy of the proposed method is further verified by comparing the predicted results with the typical results in literature. It is shown that the proposed method has high calculation accuracy, and the maximum relative errors are 9.32% for the elliptical contact, 4.61% for the circular contact and 11.84% for the line contact, respectively. Meanwhile, the proposed method can effectively predict the contact pressure distribution under the elasto-plastic elliptical, circular and line contacts, and shows a general applicability for different contact materials, contact-body's sizes and normal external loads, as well as for the elasto-plastic wheel-rail contact analysis.</p>

Mechanics of elliptical JKR-type adhesive contact

Abstract:The classic Johnson Kendall Roberts (JKR) theory describes the short-ranged adhesive contact of elastic bodies, but is only valid for axisymmetric contact. A theory for non-axisymmetric contact, which relies on approximating the contact region as an ellipse, was proposed by Johnson and Greenwood (JG). The theory includes the effects of adhesion via Griffith's criterion applied only at the semi-major and semi-minor axes of the contact ellipse. Although JG's work is in good agreement with numerical and experimental results for quasi-circular contacts, the agreement worsens as the eccentricity of the contact region increases. In this paper, we show that including the effects of adhesion by instead minimizing the sum of elastic and surface energy yields results that are in excellent agreement with previous numerical simulations over the full range of contact eccentricities.

Abstract:Interaction of nominally flat engineering surfaces that leads to a large contact area exists in many mechanical systems. Considering periodic similarity of surface geometry, a numerical three-dimensional elasto-plastic contact model can be used to simulate the contact behaviors of two nominally flat surfaces with the assistance of the continuous convolution and Fourier transform (CC-FT) algorithm. This model utilizes the analytical frequency response functions (FRF) of elastic/plastic responses of materials and provides contact performance results, including the average surface gap, the contact area ratio, and the volume of plastically deformed material, which may be defined as performance variables. Following the digital filtration technology, rough surfaces can be numerically generated with specified autocorrelation length and the first four orders of statistical moments. A group of contact simulations are conducted with various working conditions. The effects of topographic and material properties on the contact behaviors are discussed. With a multi-variables regression method, empirical formulas are developed for the performance variables as functions of surface statistical characteristics, material properties, a hardening parameter, and the applied load in terms of pressure.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the axisymmetric Hertzian contact problem at micro-/nanoscale. The deformation of material bulk is described by a simplified theory of strain gradient elasticity, and the influence of surface tension is integrated based on the surface elasticity theory. Using the Mindlin's potential function method and double Fourier integral transform, the normal surface displacement induced by a concentrated force is derived in a closed form. Following this, the contact between a rigid sphere and an elastic half-space is formulated in terms of singular integral equation, which is numerically solved by applying the Gauss-Chebyshev method. The results indicate that the distribution of contact pressure is distinctly different from that in classical elasticity theory. The indented substrate tends to perform stiffer due to the effects of surface tension and strain gradient elasticity. When the contact radius is comparable with the material length parameter, the indentation force (depth) can be ten (three) times of that given by classical Hertz theory.

Abstract:Contact loading of orthotropic materials is of interest in impact problems and other applications with composite materials. Although solutions are available for special cases such as transversely isotropic materials, solutions for contact loading for more general orthotropic materials have appeared much less frequently in the literature. The present work shows that a general procedure for calculating stresses due to contact loading can be obtained by combining two previous solution techniques. The first is the procedure outlined by Willis, that uses numerical contour integration to determine the size and aspect ratio of the elliptical contact area, and the contact pressure distribution. Detailed stress fields are then obtained by using these parameters in the general solution for transverse pressure loading of laminated orthotropic materials due to Pagano and Srinivas and Rao. Comparisons with known results for special cases, along with comparisons of surface displacements and the indentor profile, indicate that good accuracy of the solution can be achieved.

Abstract:In the present paper, we consider a two-dimensional contact problem of a rigid cylinder indenting on an elastic half space with surface tension. Based on the solution of a point force acting on a substrate with surface tension, we derive the singular integral equation of this problem. By using the Guass–Chebyshev quadrature formula, the integral equation is solved numerically to illuminate the influence of surface tension on the contact response. It is found that when the contact width is comparable with the ratio of surface tension to elastic modulus, surface tension significantly alters the pressure distribution in the contact region and the contact width. Compared to that of the classical Hertzian contact, the existence of surface tension decreases the displacements on the half plane and yields a continuous slope of normal stress and displacements across the contact fringe. In addition, it predicts the increase of hardness as the radius of indent cylinder decreasing. The obtained results are useful for the measurement of mechanical properties of materials based on the indentation technique.

Numerical Method for Solving Contact Problems under Partial Slip Conditions

Abstract:An elastic contact model for three-dimensional similar and dissimilar materials under coupled normal load and tangential load in the contact plane,with consideration of partial slip effects,is studied. When two surfaces in static contacts are subjected to normal load and tangential load,even only applying a normal load for dissimilar materials,microscopic slip will take place at certain areas of the contact region even though the contacting bodies remain still without macroscopic movement. The semi-analytical method is used to solve the partial contact problems,in which analytical solutions of displacements due to unit pressure or shear tractions are based on green function. The contact pressure and shear tractions are solved by a numerical procedure based on conjugate gradient method and fast Fourier transform technique. The meshes are applied to the positions just in the contact areas of interest,which saves the computing time. The good agreement with the results from Cattaneo-Mindlin's solution validates the numerical method. The analysis is extended to the sinusoidal wave contact to provide a further demonstration for the pressure distributions,shear stress distributions and stick regions. The results show that the stick regions are located at several disconnected areas due to the roughness effects. With the increase of tangential force,the pressure distribution inclines along the opposite direction of tangential force,the value of shear stress τx becomes positive and the stick zones shrink and move opposite to the direction of tangential force.

Abstract:A numerical technique is described for analyzing contact of disconnected structures through the use of finite element gaps. A special gap element is used, together with a stress invariance principle, to model the contact process. The solution is achieved through an iterative procedure which adjusts the modulus of the gap elements. The numerical procedure is described and results are given for two problems of differing complexity. The first is a classical Hertz problem involving contact between a sphere and a rigid plane. The second problem is concerned with the thermostructural analysis of the beat shield for a Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator design.

Abstract:For micro/nanosized contact problems, the influence of surface tension becomes prominent. Based on the solution of a point force acting on an elastic half space with surface tension, we formulate the contact between a rigid ellipsoid and an elastic substrate. The corresponding singular integral equation is solved numerically by using the Gauss–Chebyshev quadrature formula. When the size of contact region is comparable with the elastocapillary length, surface tension significantly alters the distribution of contact pressure and decreases the contact area and indent depth, compared to the classical Hertzian prediction. We generalize the explicit expression of the equivalent contact radius, the indent depth, and the eccentricity of contact ellipse with respect to the external load, which provides the fundament for analyzing nanoindentation tests and contact of rough surfaces.
A Theoretical Contact Model for Rough Elastic Spheres

Abstract:Investigating the contact of rough spheres is constructive to wide engineering applications and scientific research. However, the coexistence of global curvature and surface roughness brings difficulty in the analysis of this problem. In this work, we present a theoretical model for the contact between a rough elastic sphere and a rigid plane. As a fundament, the whole-range contact of nominally flat Gaussian rough surfaces is dealt with using a finite element method. With the load-area relation for the contact of nominally flat rough surfaces, the local real contact area of rough spherical contact is determined, in which the local pressure is given by the Hertzian model. Then, the total real contact area of rough spherical contact is obtained by integrating over the Hertzian contact area. It is found that the load-area relation for the contact of rough spheres is linear at light loads and converges to the result of smooth spherical contact as the load increases. This rough spherical contact model is validated through direct finite element simulations.

Abstract:This paper reports a three-dimensional numerical model to solve adhesive elastic contact problem of heterogeneous materials with an engineered rough surface. This model integrates the Maugis-Dugdale (MD) adhesive contact model, the Boussinesq-Cerruti integral equations, the equivalent inclusion method (EIM), and the discrete convolution and fast Fourier transform (DC-FFT) algorithm, aiming at accurate determination of contact results for heterogeneous materials. An adhesive displacement-driven conjugate gradient method (CGM) was also developed to support rapid solutions of contact pressure and contact area. Four cases were analyzed to verify this model with satisfaction. This model was used to analyze the effects of inhomogeneity (location, size, and material properties) and adhesion on micro-adhesive-elastic contact, and the results lead to a curve-fitting equation for quick evaluation of the effects of inhomogeneity properties and adhesion characteristics on normal traction. It was also utilized to study the influence of the roughness level of a type of rough surface on the surface adhesion behavior.

Abstract:In this paper the contact problem of a rigid sphere against an elastic–plastic sphere and a spherical elastic–plastic cavity is studied by means of finite element simulation for a wide range of radius ratios. Our results indicate that the deformation range naturally divides into two regimes, i.e. a one parameter regime (covering the elastic, small elastic–plastic and similarity deformation) and a two parameter regime (covering the finite deformation). In these two regimes average contact pressures (as well as contact area) versus indentation depth can be described respectively by the single parameter, i.e. indentation depth h/Re, and the two parameters, i.e. h/Re and radius ratio R1/R2. Moreover, the variation trends of average contact pressure with the increase of indentation depth differ markedly in different deformation regimes. The numerical evolution of pressure distribution indicates that with increase of indentation depth the pressure distribution becomes more peaked at the center of the contact area meanwhile the maximum contact pressure, limited by the flow stress, increases slightly. Therefore in the two parameter regime, the average pressure would stop growing and get lower rather than continuously higher as it does in the one parameter regime.

Abstract:Hertzian contact of a rigid sphere and a highly deformable soft solid is investigated using integrated photoelasticity. The experiments are performed by pressing a styrene sphere of 15 mm diameter against a 44 × 44 × 47 mm 3 cuboid made of 5% wt. gelatin, inside a circular polariscope, and with a range of forces. The emerging light rays are processed by considering that the retardation of each ray carries the cumulative effect of traversing the contact-induced axisymmetric stress field. Then, assuming Hertz's theory is valid, the retardation is analytically calculated for each ray and compared to the experimental one. Furthermore, a finite element model of the process introduces the effect of finite displacements and strains. Beyond the qualitative comparison of the retardation fields, the experimental, theoretical, and numerical results are quantitatively compared in terms of the maximum equivalent stress, surface displacement, and contact radius dimensions. A favorable agreement is found at lower force levels, where the assumptions of Hertz theory hold, whereas deviations are observed at higher force levels. A major discovery of this work is that, at the maximum equivalent stress location, all three components of principal stress can be determined experimentally and show satisfactory agreement with theoretical and numerical ones in our measurement range. This provides valuable insight into Hertzian contact problems since the maximum equivalent stress controls the initiation of plastic deformation or failure. The measured displacement and contact radii also reasonably agree with the theoretical and numerical ones. Finally, the limitations that arise due to the linearization of this problem are explored.

FFT-Based Numerical Method for Non-Linear Elastic Contact

Abstract:Abstract Based on FFT, a numerical method suitable for elastoplastic and hyperelastic frictionless contact is proposed in this paper, which can be used to solve 2D and 3D contact problems. The non-linear elastic contact problem is transformed to linear elastic contact considering residual deformation (or equivalent residual deformation). Numerical simulations for elastic, elastoplastic and hyperelastic contact between hemisphere and rigid plane are compared with the results of finite element method (FEM) to verify the accuracy of the numerical method. Compared with the existing elastoplastic contact numerical methods, the calculation efficiency is improved while ensuring a certain calculation accuracy (pressure error does not exceed 15% while calculation time does not exceed 10 minutes in a 64×64 grid). For hyperelastic contact, the proposed method reduces the dependence of the approximation result on load as in linear elastic approximation. Despite a certain error, the simplified numerical method shows a better approximation result than linear elastic contact approximation, which can be used for the fast solution in engineering applications. Finally, taking the sealing application as an example, the contact and leakage rate between 3D complicated rough surfaces are calculated.
On Elastic Line Contact

Abstract:Two-dimensional elastic half-space contact theory suffers from the defect that the surface displacement with respect to infinity becomes infinitely large when the total force carried by the half space is different from zero. Several authors removed this defect by altering the geometry so that the depth of the elastic body becomes finite. In the present paper another approach is chosen by considering contact areas which are many times as long as they are wide, but which still are small as compared with a characteristic dimension of the body which is approximated by the half space. As one of the examples, the Hertz problem is considered, and the asymptotic results are compared with the exact theory. It is found that errors of 10–15 percent are found when the contact ellipse is twice as long as wide, and errors of 2–3 percent are encountered when the ratio of the axes is five.

Abstract:There is a range of problems where repeated rolling and sliding contact occurs over a half space of an elastic–perfectly plastic material. For such problems shakedown and limit analysis provide significant advantages over other forms of analysis when a global understanding of deformation behaviour is required. In this paper, a recently developed numerical upper bound method, the Linear Matching Method (LMM), for shakedown analyses is applied to the solution of a problem previously considered by Ponter et al. [Ponter, A.R.S., Hearle, A.D., Johnson, K.L., 1985. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 33 (4), 339–362] for a moving Hertzian contact, with sliding friction. This semi-analytic solution is an upper bound based on certain specific kinematic assumptions. We show that the Ponter, Hearle and Johnson solution is a reasonable approximate solution for a circular contact area but is less accurate for an elliptic contact area. For an elliptic contact area LLM solutions converge to the line contact solution. The effect of the non-coincidence of the direction of travel and slide is also investigated.
The Characteristics of Elastically Contacting Ideal Rough Surfaces

Abstract:The analysis of the elastic contact of ideal rough surfaces is presented in this paper. The rough asperities are assumed to be spherical with the same vertical height and spatial distance. The mutual influence of asperities is considered. Numerical results show that for the same load, the contact area is less than the Hertzian prediction while the pressure distribution is still of a Hertzian type, but is increased to some extent. We find that the asperity interaction is associated with a parameter, called the ''loading level,'' which combines the surface texture, mechanical properties, and the nominal mean pressure. Of significant importance is the discovery of the variation of the reference plane position with the contact load In the classical theory of rough contact (Greenwood and Williamson, 1966), the reference plane was in fact assumed to be in the mean line position. We prove that the location of the reference plane is determined by the number of contacting asperities and the lending level, thus making the analysis of the contact of rough surfaces somewhat complex.

This limit, however, should not be relevant for practical applications. Our work contains a brief summary of the employed numerical method Green’s function molecular dynamics including an illustration of how to systematically overcome numerical shortcomings through appropriate finite-size, fractal, and discretization corrections. Additionally, we outline the derivation of Persson theory in dimensionless units. Persson theory compares well to the numerical reference data.
