Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effect of different adhesives and veneering resins on the shear bond strength (SBS) of polyetheretherketone (PEEK). Methods: A total of 138 PEEK specimens were randomly divided into 6 groups according to adhesive material application: Control (C, no application), Adhese Universal (A) (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), Gluma Bond Universal (G) (Heraeus Kulzer, South Bend, IN, USA), G-PremioBOND (P) (GC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan), Single Bond Universal (S) (3M, Saint Paul, MN, USA) and visio.link (V) (Bredent, Senden, Germany). Each adhesive group was divided into two subgroups according to the type of veneering material: Estenia direct composite (D) and Gradia Plus indirect composite (IN) (both GC Corporation). After the veneering process, the specimens were aged by thermal cycling. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for SBS analysis (P < 0.05). Results: The highest SBS results were obtained in the VIN group, followed by the VD, PD, GIN, AIN, AD, SIN, SD, PIN, GD, CIN and CD groups, respectively (P = 0.001). There were no significant differences in terms of the type of veneering composite when the same adhesive was applied (P > 0.05), except for Gluma Bond Universal (P = 0.009). All the adhesives tested showed clinically acceptable SBS results. Conclusion: Visio.link offered the highest adhesion to PEEK, whereas the tested universal adhesives may be used as an alternative to visio.link in clinical settings. It was determined that changing the veneer type has no statistical difference when the same adhesive material is used.
Influence of sandblasting and bonding on the shear bond strength between differently pigmented polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and veneering composite after artificial aging

Abstract:Objective Achieving a strong bond between Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and veneering composites is challenging due to PEEKs low surface energy. This study examined the effects of sandblasting and bonding on the shear bond strength (SBS) between veneering composite and pigmented PEEK, considering artificial aging. Methods Of three pigmented PEEK compounds (DC4420R, DC4450R, DC4470R; Evonic Operations GmbH, Marl, Germany), 40 specimens each were milled and polished up to 2500 grit. Prior to veneering, specimens were divided into 4 subgroups: Subgroup 1: Polishing; 2: Polishing + bonding; 3: Sandblasting; 4: Sandblasting + bonding. Sandblasting was performed using Al 2 O 3 . Adhesive was an agent containing MMA (Signum Universal Bond, Kulzer GmbH, Hanau, Germany). After veneering (Composite, Kulzer GmbH) the subgroups were divided into 2 subgroups. One subgroup was immersed in 37 °C warm distilled water for 24 h. The second subgroup was artificially aged by thermocycling (TCL) with 5000 cycles in distilled water (5 °C / 55 °C; 30 s). Surface roughness, water contact angles and failure modes were recorded. SBS was measured using a universal testing machine. Results Results demonstrated that the combination of sandblasting and bonding significantly improved the SBS compared to polishing alone. PEEK color did not significantly influence the SBS. Aging by TCL had a negative effect on the SBS. Significance Sandblasting and the use of an adhesive containing MMA were found to be effective in achieving satisfactory SBS between veneering composite and pigmented PEEK surfaces. These pretreatment methods demonstrate their potential for establishing durable and reliable bonding in clinical applications.

Abstract:Statement of problem: Several additively and subtractively manufactured resin-based materials indicated for interim and definitive fixed dental prostheses have been launched. However, knowledge of the bond strength of these materials to different implant abutment materials is limited. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of additively and subtractively manufactured resin-based materials to different implant abutment materials. Material and methods: One hundred and ten disk-shaped specimens (Ø3×3 mm) were fabricated either additively from 2 resins indicated for definitive use (Crowntec; AM_CT and VarseoSmile Crown Plus; AM_VS) and 1 resin indicated for interim use (FREEPRINT temp; AM_FP) or subtractively from a nanographene-reinforced polymethyl methacrylate (G-CAM; SM_GC) and a high-impact polymer composite (breCAM.HIPC; SM_BC). After allocating 2 specimens from each group for scanning electron microscope evaluation, the specimens were divided according to the abutment material (CopraPeek; polyetheretherketone, PEEK and Dentium Superline Pre-Milled Abutment; titanium, Ti) (n=10). All specimens were airborne-particle abraded with 50-µm aluminum oxide. After applying a resin primer (Visio.link) to PEEK and an adhesive primer (Clearfil Ceramic Primer Plus) to Ti specimens, a self-adhesive resin cement (PANAVIA SA Cement Universal) was used for cementation. All specimens were stored in distilled water (24 hours, 37 °C), and a universal testing device was used for the SBS test. SBS data were analyzed with 2-way analysis of variance and Tukey honestly significant difference tests, while the chi-squared test was used to evaluate the difference among the abutment-resin pairs in terms of failure modes (α=.05). Results: The interaction between the material type and the abutment type and the main factor of material type affected the SBS (P<.001). SM_BC-PEEK and SM_GC had the lowest SBS followed by SM_BC-Ti, whereas AM_VS-PEEK had the highest SBS (P≤.001). AM_CT-Ti had higher SBS than AM_FP-PEEK (P=.026). SM_GC had the lowest and AM_VS had the highest SBS, while AM_CT and AM_FP had higher SBS than SM_BC (P≤.004). The distribution of failure modes was significantly different among tested material-abutment pairs, and only for AM_CT among tested materials (P≤.025). Most of the material-abutment pairs had a minimum of 80% adhesive failures. Conclusions: Regardless of the abutment material, additively manufactured specimens had higher bond strength and one of the subtractively manufactured materials (SM_GC) mostly had lower bond strength. The abutment material had a small effect on the bond strength. Adhesive failures were observed most frequently.

Abstract:Objective : To compare the shear bond strength values of current CAD/CAM materials and to evaluate the color changes resulting from immersion in coloring solutions. Material and Methods: A total of 160 specimens were prepared from 4 CAD/CAM blocks; lithium disilicate glass ceramic (IPS E.max CAD[EC]), zirconia reinforced lithium silicate ceramic (Vita Suprinity[VS]), polimer infitrated glass ceramic (Vita Enamic[VE]) and hybrid ceramic (GC Cerasmart [GC]). The ceramic specimens were immersed in tea, coffee, cherry juice and distilled water solutions. Color measurements were made. To compare the shear bond strength values, all specimens were bonded to resin cement. Then the specimens were aged with 5000 thermocycling. The failure modes were classified according to stereomicroscope analysis and than scanning electron microscopy images for surface topography were obtained. Results: The color change values were significantly greater in coffee compared to other solutions and the highest color change was seen in GC and VE. The highest bond strength values were seen in VS and VE. The shear bond strength values are listed as follows: VS>VE>EC>CS. Conclusions: EC and VS can be used, especially in aesthetic restorations, due to their high color stability. Additionally, considering the bond strength values of VS, it appears to be a highly satisfactory material.

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to compare the in vitro shear bond strength (SBS) of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and dual-cured, resin-modified calcium silicate material (Theracal PT) to composite resin, compomer, and bulk-fill composite, and to evaluate the bond failure mode under a stereomicroscope. Methods: Ninety acrylic specimens, each with a 4 mm diameter and 2 mm height central hole, were prepared. These specimens were randomly divided into two groups based on the capping materials: MTA and Theracal PT. Each group was further subdivided into three subgroups (n = 15) according to the restorative materials: composite resin, compomer, and bulk-fill composite. The specimens were then subjected to shear testing using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Post-test, the fracture locations were examined using a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey test. Results: The SBS values for the Theracal PT group were significantly higher than those for the MTA group (p < 0.001). Within the MTA groups, no significant differences were observed in SBS values across the different restorative materials. However, a significant difference was found between the mean SBS values of the Theracal PT + composite resin group and the Theracal PT + compomer group (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Theracal PT shows promise in dentistry due to its superior bond strength. Given its bond values, Theracal PT appears capable of forming durable and long-lasting restorations by establishing reliable bonds with various restorative materials commonly used in dentistry.
Physicomechanical characterization of polyetheretherketone and current esthetic dental CAD/CAM polymers after aging in different storage media

Abstract:Statement of problem: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) can be used to support fixed dental prostheses. However, information about physicomechanical characterization is still scarce. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess effects of different aging regimens/durations on roughness, solubility, water absorption, Martens hardness (HM), and indentation modulus/EIT on different computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) polymers. Material and methods: Forty standardized specimens of the following materials were fabricated: PEEK: Dentokeep (DK); hybrid material: VITA Enamic (EN); composite resins: LAVA Ultimate (LU) and an experimental CAD/CAM nanohybrid-composite resin (EX); poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based: VITA CAD-Temp (CT); Telio CAD (TC), artBloc Temp (AT), and ZENOTEC ProFix (ZP). A nanofilled-polymer for interim restorations, Protemp 4 (CG), served as the control group. Specimens were stored in sodium chloride, artificial saliva, physiological saliva, and distilled water at 37°C for 1, 7, 14, 28, 90, and 180 days. Roughness, water absorption, HM, and EIT were investigated after each storage period; solubility was determined after 180 days only. Data were analyzed using weighted 3/2/1-way ANOVA and the post hoc Scheffé tests (α=.05). Results: Storage media had no effect on surface roughness and water absorption. Physiological saliva revealed the highest significant impact on solubility followed by artificial saliva, sodium chloride, and distilled water. Water absorption increased significantly with storage duration. PEEK showed the lowest solubility and water absorption values. The highest solubility was observed for the conventional polymer CG, and the highest water absorption was found for the composite LU. PMMA-based TC, ZP, CG, and AT showed the lowest HM and indentation modulus, followed by CT, and PEEK. The highest values were observed for the hybrid material EN, followed by LU and EX. Conclusions: The hardness parameters of PEEK were comparable with those of PMMA-based materials.
Comparative evaluation of bond strength and color stability of polyetheretherketone and zirconia layered with indirect composite before and after thermocycling: An in vitro study

Abstract:Aim: This study investigates the interaction of zirconia and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) with indirect composite in fixed dental prostheses. This investigation aimed to assess the shear bond strength (SBS) and color stability of zirconia and PEEK before and after aging, addressing critical concerns in dental restorative applications. Settings and design: The current in vitro study used 96 samples, 48 of which were divided into two groups, zirconia and PEEK, before and after thermocycling. A dual-axis chewing simulator was used for thermocycling. SBS was measured using a universal testing machine, and color stability was checked using a reflective spectrophotometer. Materials and methods: Ninety-six samples were categorized into zirconia and PEEK groups, each with subgroups undergoing thermocycling. Samples were prepared using computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing milling and veneered with composite resin. Thermocycling involved 10,000 cycles, simulating stress levels equivalent to approximately 1 year of clinical use. SBS was assessed using standardized tests. Stereomicroscopic analysis was performed to evaluate the type of failure. Color stability of the core materials with indirect composite was done using a spectrophotometer before and after aging. Statistical analysis used: Statistical analysis included paired t-tests and independent t-tests in SPSS software. Results: The results revealed that SBS values for composite on PEEK decreased from 13.86 ± 0.164 MPa before thermocycling to 13.46 ± 0.185 MPa after thermocycling, with a significant difference (P < 0.005). However, both pre- and postthermocycling values for PEEK were higher than zirconia. The t-test confirmed the lower bond strength of composite to zirconia, with a noteworthy improvement after aging. Stereomicroscopic images revealed adhesive failure for the zirconia group and mixed (adhesive and cohesive) failure for the PEEK group. ΔE values were 3.21 ± 0.127 and 2.93 ± 0.142 for zirconia and PEEK groups, respectively (P < 0.005). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, it can be deduced that PEEK is a feasible substitute for zirconia when used in conjunction with indirect composite for the fabrication of dental prostheses.
In vitro shear bond strength of dual-curing resin cements to two different high-strength ceramic materials with different surface texture

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of two dual-curing resin cements to two high-strength ceramics with different surface texture. Material and methods: Composite cylinders were bonded to aluminum oxide (A) and zirconium oxide (Z) ceramic disks with six different surfaces. Investigated surfaces were for both ceramics: dry-pressed Procera Crown (A1, Z1), machined Procera Bridge (A2, Z2), airborne particle abraded Procera bridge (A3, Z3). Additional surfaces were, for alumina, dry-pressed Procera Laminate (A4) and, for zirconia, two modified surfaces (Z4, Z5). Two adhesive resin cements were used (Clearfil Esthetic and RelyX ARC). SBS was tested in a universal testing machine before and after artificial aging by thermal cycling. Results: Mean SBS ranged from 6.1 to 38.4 MPa before and from 0.0 to 41.4 MPa after aging. Clearfil Esthetic in A3, A4, and Z3 performed better than RelyX ARC. Aging decreased SBS, except for Z1, Z4, and Z5. For alumina, A4 was higher in SBS than A2, but similar to A1 and A3. For zirconia, Z5 showed the highest SBS. Z4 was higher than Z2 and Z3, but similar to Z1. Conclusions: Shear bond strength to alumina and zirconia increases with surface roughness. The modified zirconia surface Z5 provides stable long-term shear bond strength and can be bonded to either of the two used cements.
A Comparison of the Shear Bond Strength between a Luting Composite Resin and Both Machinable and Printable Ceramic–Glass Polymer Materials

Abstract:This study aims to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) and Weibull characteristics between a luting composite resin and both printable and two different machinable ceramic–glass polymer materials. A total of 36 substrates were prepared, with 12 in each group. Printable substrates (12 mm × 12 mm × 2 mm) were printed by using permanent crown resin (3D-PR). Machinable substrates were obtained from Cerasmart 270 (CS) and Vita Enamic (VE) blocks (2 mm in thickness). The bonding surfaces of substrates were polished and airborne abraded (50 μm Al2O3). A self-adhesive luting composite resin (RelyX U200, 3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA, SLC) was applied on substrates with the help of a cylindrical (Ø3 × 3 mm) mold. The SBS test was conducted using a universal test machine. The SBSs of three materials were compared using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) (α = 0.05). The Weibull modulus was calculated for each material. The Kruskal–Wallis and chi-square tests were carried out for the failure mode analysis. There was no significant difference between the SBSs of the three materials (p = 0.129). The Weibull modulus was 3.76 for the 3D-PR, 4.22 for the CS, and 6.52 for the VE group. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference between the failure modes of the groups (p = 0.986). Mixed-failure fractures were predominantly observed in all three groups. The results show that the SBS of the SLC to printable 3D-PR is comparable to that of CS and VE material. Failure modes of printable 3D-PR show similar results with two different machinable ceramic–glass polymers.

Abstract:Background: This study aims to evaluate the effect of surface treatment and resin cement on the shear bond strength (SBS) and mode of failure of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) to lithium disilicate ceramic (LDC). This is suggested to study alternative veneering of PEEK frameworks with a ceramic material. Methods: eighty discs were prepared from PEEK blank and from lithium disilicate ceramic. Samples were divided into four groups according to surface treatment: Group (A) air abraded with 110 μm Al2O3, Group (AP) air abrasion and primer application, Group (S) 98% sulfuric acid etching for 60 s, Group (SP) Sulfuric acid and primer. Each group was subdivided into two subgroups based on resin cement type used for bonding LDC:1) subgroup (L) self- adhesive resin cement and 2) subgroup (B) conventional resin cement (n = 10). Thermocycling was done for all samples. The bond strength was assessed using the shear bond strength test (SBS). Failure mode analysis was done at 50X magnification with a stereomicroscope. Samples were chosen from each group for scanning electron microscope (SEM). The three-way nested ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test were used for statistical analysis of results. Comparisons of effects were done utilizing one way ANOVA and (p < 0.05). Results: The highest mean of shear bond strength values was demonstrated in Group of air abrasion with primer application using conventional resin cement (APB) (12.21 ± 2.14 MPa). Sulfuric acid groups showed lower shear bond strength values and the majority failed in thermocycling especially when no primer was applied. The failure mode analysis showed that the predominant failure type was adhesive failure between cement and PEEK, while the remaining was mixed failure between cement and PEEK. Conclusion: The air abrasion followed by primer application and conventional resin cement used for bonding Lithium Disilicate to PEEK achieved the best bond strength. Primer application did not have an effect when self-adhesive resin cement was used in air-abraded groups. Priming step is mandatory whenever sulfuric acid etching surface treatment is utilized for PEEK.
Shear bond strength characteristics on surface treatment modalities of CAD-CAM resin polymers

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to analyze the shear bond strength of composite resin to a commercially available high-performance polymer material for fixed, screw-retained full arch restorations. Material and methods: A total of 135 computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing, high-performance polymer (HPP) blocks were cut and obtained from discs (Trilor 95, Harvest Dental, Brea, CA). The samples were 10 mm × 10 mm × 10 mm. The specimen surfaces were grouped as untreated (Group A), 50 μm Al2O3 (Group B), 110 μm Al2O3 (Group C), Rocatec (3 M, St. Paul, MN) activated with silica-modified alumina oxide treatment (Group D); and trimmed coarsely with a carbide bur (Group E). Group A samples were used as controls. After surface treatments, the specimens were gently cleansed with oil-free steam and alcohol wipes. Surface conditioning was performed on all physically treated samples. The manufacturer's recommendations were followed for bonding composite resin to the samples with light-cured Visio.link (Bredent, Chesterfield, UK). Cylinders were veneered with composite resins (diameter 5 mm, height 4 mm) and polymerized on the specimen surfaces through plastic tubes. Twenty-seven specimens were used for each testing group and aging tests were performed. The experimental samples were thermocycled. Shear bond strength and scanning electron microscopic tests were performed. Means and standard deviations were calculated. Statistical analysis was performed with post-hoc Tukey tests. Results: Statistical analysis revealed that there was a significant difference between the groups (p<0.001). The highest shear bond strengths were achieved for the specimens bonded with Visio.link without physical surface treatments (270.47 MPa). The lowest bond strengths were found for specimen surfaces abraded with 110 μm Al2O3 (117.03 Mpa) CONCLUSIONS: The results of this laboratory study indicated that the specimens used with Visio.link as provided by the manufacturer had the highest shear bond strengths between the composite resin and high-performance polymer test specimens. Modifications of the high-performance polymer surfaces with carbide burs did not change bonding strengths with the composite materials.
Composite-veneering of polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK): evaluating the effects of different surface modification methods on surface roughness, wettability, and bond strength

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different surface modification methods on the surface roughness, contact angle, and bond strength of composite-veneer materials of polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK). Fifty-five specimens ( n = 11) with a size of 7 × 7 × 2 mm were cut out from PEEK discs. The specimens were divided into five groups with different surface treatments: no treatment (NO) (control group), sulfuric acid (SA), plasma (P), femtosecond laser (FS), and Nd-YAG laser (NY). After the surface treatments, the specimens were checked for roughness, contact angle, and bond strength of the composite-veneer material. Data were analyzed with the Welch test for roughness, contact angle, and bond strength parameters. Individual Pearson correlation tests were executed for all surface treatment groups to determine any significant correlations among roughness, contact angle, and bond strength parameters ( P < .001). Roughness, contact angle, and bond strength values were affected by surface modification methods ( P < .001). In comparison to the control group, NY and FS treatments increased the surface roughness and bond strength; they also provided bond strength values comparable to the SA group. When the relationship between the variables was examined, no correlation was seen between roughness, contact angle, and bond strength values for the NY, SA, and control groups ( P > .05); however, significant correlations were determined between the contact angle and surface roughness values for the P and FS groups ( P < .05). Femtosecond and Nd-YAG laser treatments are viable surface modification alternatives to the sulfuric acid treatment for the PEEK material.

Abstract:Poly(aryl–ether–ketone) materials (PAEKs) are gaining interest in everyday dental practices because of their natural properties. This study aims to analyze the bonding performance of PAEKs to a denture acrylic. Testing materials were pretreated by grinding, sandblasting, and priming prior to polymerization with the denture acrylic. The surface morphologies were observed using a scanning electron microscope and the surface roughness was measured using atomic force microscopy. The shear bond strength (SBS) values were determined after 0 and 2500 thermal cycles. The obtained data were analyzed using a paired samples t-test and Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD) test (α = 0.05). The surface characteristics of testing materials after different surface pretreatments showed obvious differences. PAEKs showed lower surface roughness values (0.02–0.03 MPa) than Co-Cr (0.16 MPa) and zirconia (0.22 MPa) after priming and sandblasting treatments (p < 0.05). The SBS values of PAEKs (7.60–8.38 MPa) met the clinical requirements suggested by ISO 10477 (5 MPa). Moreover, PAEKs showed significantly lower SBS reductions (p < 0.05) after thermal cycling fatigue testing compared to Co-Cr and zirconia. Bonding performance is essential for denture materials, and our results demonstrated that PAEKs possess good resistance to thermal cycling fatigue, which is an advantage in clinical applications. The results imply that PAEKs are potential alternative materials for the removable of prosthetic frameworks.

Abstract:Background: Debonding of ball attachments is one of the complications that annoy teeth supported overdenture wearers. The polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) polymers are widely applied in the dental field. The purpose of the current study was to compare the tensile bond strength of ball attachments made of such materials and the commonly used titanium ones after 5 years of overdenture insertion and removal (5000 cycles) in addition to chewing simulation (1,200,000 cycle). Methods: Extracted mandibular canines (N = 60) were randomly allocated into three groups and received ball attachments; titanium (group TI; N = 20), PEEK (group PE; N = 20), PEKK (group PK; N = 20). In each group, the samples were divided into two subgroups whereas tensile bond strength was measured pre aging (T0; n = 10) and post aging (T1; n = 10). Tensile bond strength was measured by the Pull out test using the Universal testing machine. Failure mode analysis was determined by examination of the samples' surfaces under 65X stereomicroscope. The resulting data followed normal distribution and the significance level was set at (α = 0.05). Results: One Way Anova showed statistically significant difference between the three groups (P < .00001). PostHoc Tukey test showed statistically significant difference between the groups TI and PE, TI and PK and no statistically significant difference between the groups PE and PK. Paired t test showed statistically significant difference in the tensile bond strength pre and post aging in each group. Conclusions: PEEK and PEKK ball attachments could be concluded to have a higher tensile bond strength compared to the titanium ones when bonded to root dentin. Tensile bond strength of such attachments may decrease with aging as well. Clinically, the higher tensile bond strength may have a lesser rate of debonding and thus reduced patient apprehension.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the bond strength between PEEK/PEKK and composite resins after various laser treatments and to compare the effectiveness of lasers on these polymers. 130 disc-shaped PEEK and PEKK blocks were obtained (10 mm diameter-4 mm height). One sample from each group (10 in total) was selected for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The samples were randomly divided into 5 different surface treatment groups for each material (PEEK and PEKK): Er: YAG laser, Nd: YAG laser, diode laser, femtosecond laser and control (no surface treatment) ( n = 12). Baseline and post-treatment surface roughness measurements were performed using a profilometer. The composite resin was bonded and SBS was measured. Comparisons among the groups were conducted via Kruskal–Wallis, one-way ANOVA; Tukey and Dunn tests were used as a post hoc test ( p ≤ 0.05). All lasers significantly increased the roughness values of the PEEK and PEKK samples. In terms of shear bond strength; the Er: YAG and femtosecond laser groups had the highest values and the Nd: YAG, diode and control groups had the lowest values of the PEEK samples ( p ≤ 0.05). The control group had the highest bond strength values and the femtosecond group had the lowest values for PEKK samples ( p ≤ 0.05). All laser treatments increased the surface roughness of the PEEK and PEKK. Lasers increased the bond strength of PEEK to the veneering composite resin and decreased the bond strength values of PEKK. This shows that lasers behave differently in PEEK and PEKK materials.

Abstract:Purpose: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a new polymeric material that has received significant attention in dentistry because of its mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and aesthetics. However, the bonding performance of PEEK to other materials is not preferable. This study aimed to analyze the variations in the surface characteristics of PEEK under the chemical action of primers containing different functional monomers or polymers and to evaluate the bonding performance of PEEK and dental cement. Methods: Disk-shaped PEEK samples were prepared by dental milling, blasting with alumina oxide, and covering with primers containing functional monomers or polymers. The surface characteristics of the samples were analyzed by microscopy and spectroscopy. The shear bond strength (SBS) between PEEK and dental cement, with and without thermocycling, was tested using a universal testing machine. Finally, the data were statistically analyzed and compared. Results: Functional monomers or polymers were successfully bonded to the surface of PEEK. This treatment significantly improved its hydrophilicity and surface free energy (P < 0.05). The primer containing pentaerythritol triacrylate had the highest SBS without thermocycling (13.89 MPa). Meanwhile, the primers containing urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) (abbreviated as the HC group) showed the highest SBS and lowest reduction (25.51%) after thermocycling. Notably, all the testing groups achieved the ISO10477 standard of 5 MPa. After thermocycling, adhesive failure accounted for the largest proportion of failures in all the groups except the HC group. Conclusions: The chemical priming treatment can significantly improve the SBS of PEEK and dental cement. Moreover, a primer containing both UDMA and MMA can provide improved bonding for PEEK materials.
New adhesive protocol improves shear bond strength of Polyetherketoneketone (PEKK)

Abstract:Objective: Inert surface of Polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) jeopardizes resin bonding. This study aimed to present a new adhesive protocol to improve PEKK bonding. Methods: A total of 360 PEKK blocks were milled, polished (maximum roughness of 0.20 µm), and randomly assigned to groups. The new protocol was applied (n = 36) and compared to conventional treatments (no treatment; sandblasting (110-µm Al2O3 and silica); no adhesive; Visiolink (Bredent); and PEKKbond (AnaxDent)) (n = 36). For the new protocol, the surface was blasted (110 µm Al2O3 and 96% isopropyl alcohol at 60 psi), followed by 96% isopropyl alcohol washing, and air drying. PEKKbond was applied (dried for 3 min at 77 °C), followed by Visiolink (dried for 3 min at 60 °C); both light-cured for 3 min (800 mW/cm2). Preopaque (GC Europe) and Opaque (AnaxDent) were applied and light-cured (5 min). Morphological topography was analyzed, and flowable gingiva-colored composite (AnaxGum, AnaxDent) was bonded. All specimens were aged for 24 h and thermocycled (5000 cycles, 5-55 °C). Shear bond strength (SBS) was measured (MPa) and data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA, Tukey, and Weibull moduli estimation (α = 0.05). Results: The highest SBS values were found in the new protocol (p < 0.05), regardless of aging. Thermocycling reduced SBS (p < 0.05), while Al2O3 and PEKKbond produced higher SBS values than silica and Visiolink, respectively (p < 0.05). Significance: The new protocol strongly improves PEKK adhesiveness, and this can reflect in the longevity of prostheses.
Adhesive Property of 3D-Printed PEEK Abutments: Effects of Surface Treatment and Temporary Crown Material on Shear Bond Strength

Abstract:Three-dimensionally printed polyetheretherketone (PEEK) materials are promising for fabricating customized dental abutments. This study aimed to investigate the adhesive property of a 3D-printed PEEK material. The effects of surface treatment and temporary crown materials on shear bond strength were evaluated. A total of 108 PEEK discs were 3D printed by fused-filament fabrication. Surface treatments, including sandblasting, abrasive paper grinding, and CO2 laser ablation, were applied to the PEEK discs, with the untreated specimens set as the control. Afterward, the surface topographies of each group were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM, n = 1) and roughness measurements (n = 7). After preparing the bonding specimens with three temporary crown materials (Artificial teeth resin (ATR), 3M™ Filtek™ Supreme Flowable Restorative (FR), and Cool Temp NATURAL (CTN)), the shear bond strength was measured (n = 6), and the failure modes were analyzed by microscopy and SEM. The results showed that ATR exhibited a significantly higher shear bond strength compared to FR and CTN (p < 0.01), and the PEEK surfaces treated by sandblasting and abrasive paper grinding showed a statistically higher shear bond strength compared to the control (p < 0.05). For clinical application, the ATR material and subtractive surface treatments are recommended for 3D-printed PEEK abutments.
Effect of aging and thermocycling on flexural strength of PEEK as a provisional restoration for full mouth rehabilitation - An In vitro study

Abstract:Introduction: To compare the flexural strength of autopolymerizing poly methyl methacrylate resins (PMMA) resin, CAD/CAM milled PMMA and CAD/CAM milled poly ether ether ketone (PEEK) when used as provisional restorative materials for long span situations in full mouth rehabilitation after aging and thermocycling. Materials and methods: Sixty samples (25 mm × 2 mm × 2 mm) were fabricated using autopolymerizing PMMA resin (GROUP I), CAD/CAM milled PMMA (GROUP II) and PEEK (GROUP III). The groups were subdivided into A and B and subjected to 7 days of aging and 500 cycles of thermocycling (subgroup A) and 14 days of aging and 1000 cycles of thermocycling (subgroup B), respectively, and flexural strength was evaluated using a three-point bend test. The data were analyzed with student t test and pair-wise comparison of mean values was done by ANOVA. Results: The flexural strength of PEEK subjected to 7 days of aging and 500 cycles of thermocycling (III (A) - 6628.70 MPa) was the highest among all groups followed by PEEK subjected to 14 days of aging and 1000 cycles of thermocycling (III (B) - 3760.50 MPa). Conclusion: The mean flexural strength of PEEK was statistically significant than the other two materials tested and hence can be recommended for use as a provisional restorative material for long span situations in full mouth rehabilitation. However, the mean flexural strength of PEEK reduced approximately by 44% when subjected to further aging.
