Abstract:The traditional model of community club-based sport is fine for those, particularly children and youth, who enjoy the competitive focus and have the skills and commitment to play. But societal preferences during leisure time have changed dramatically over recent decades. However, sport organisations have made limited progress in response to these changes in providing ways in which children and youth can participate outside the traditional competitive structures and environments. In this paper the context of community club-based structures is reviewed leading into an assessment of the associated impact of these structures on sport participation. Children and youth's current motivations to play sport including what makes sport fun to play, are considered. It is then demonstrated that the associations between motivations to play sport and the factors that contribute to fun and enjoyment, are often misaligned for many individuals, with a primary focus on competition-based structures to deliver community club sport. In the final part of the paper a model for community sport organisations where people are put first is proposed - Sport4Me. Sport4Me is about flexible, inclusive, equitable sporting opportunities that focus on friends, fun, physical literacy and play. The model would complement the traditional competitive club-based model and afford participants more choice whilst fostering an environment that promotes lifelong involvement in sport. This model will require structural and cultural changes to the sporting environment and include coaching practices. Sport4Me is an evidence-based model, but it is not radical in its conceptualisation but rather, builds on previously proposed approaches, considers the needs and wants of potential sport participants and widens the scope of sport delivery.

Abstract:Community sport organisations face increasing pressure from stakeholders to devote resources to activities that help them appear as being socially responsible actors in society. This study extends the concept of social responsibility from the corporate sport domain to investigate the relative importance of social responsibilities for community sport clubs. Items were developed from the Global Reporting Initiative and International Standards Organisation guidance on socially responsible organisations. A three-wave Delphi study was conducted internationally with 33 sport management academics and 23 national sport organisation managers. This study found that community sport clubs are primarily responsible for enhancing sport participation, creating a safe and inclusive environment, and ensuring the club is economically and legally sound. It is concluded that for sport clubs to be socially responsible organisations, their focus should be on fulfilling obligations that meaningfully impact their community, before devoting scarce resources to activities beyond their immediate capacity.
Organizational Capacity and Performance of Community Sport Clubs

Abstract:Using a multidimensional framework, the authors developed the Community Sport Capacity Scale to measure the key elements of capacity in community sport organizations or clubs and investigate their relative impact on three key indicators of club performance. Presidents or their representatives from 336 community sport organizations in 20 sports across the province of Ontario, Canada, completed the web-based survey measuring the extent of various elements of human resources, infrastructure, finance, planning, and external relationships capacity. The survey also measured club operations, programs, and community presence, identified as key performance outcomes. Controlling for club size, elements representing all five capacity dimensions were significantly associated with the outcomes. The findings highlight the rich information that may be generated from a multidimensional and context-specific perspective on organizational capacity, and indicate implications for building capacity in community sport organizations.

Benefits and barriers of participating in community sport for individuals with an intellectual disability

Abstract:In recent years, there is an increasing number of individuals accessing integrated community sport clubs in Australia. The objective of this study was to explore the benefits and barriers of participating in community sport directly from the perspectives of the individuals with the intellectual disability. This qualitative study provided an appreciation of the lived experienced of participating in community sport for individuals with intellectual disabilities. A total of 29 participants shared their personal lived experiences in a series of focus groups. Data from the focus groups was transcribed and coded using a thematic analysis. Results highlight that participation in community sport increased exposure to social capital, ameliorated interpersonal skills, confidence, leadership, and respect, in addition to enhancing ability to develop and achieve personal goals. Findings illustrate the need for increased awareness about community integrated sport in schools and communities to increase participation in the programs.

Abstract:Community sport clubs are a type of membership association largely run by member volunteers who organize and deliver opportunities for recreational and competitive sport participation. These clubs are where people are most likely to engage in organized sport, and have become a focus for achieving social policy objectives. It is important to understand the structures and processes that enable these organizations to meet their member-focused mandates. The purpose of this study was to develop a framework of organizational capacity in this context by uncovering critical elements within multiple capacity dimensions, namely, human resources, finance, infrastructure, planning and development, and external relationships. Focus groups with presidents of 51 sport clubs across Ontario revealed key strengths and challenges that impact the ability of these organizations to achieve their sport delivery goals. Variation by club size was observed. Implications for practice and future research on community sport clubs and membership associations are presented.

Abstract:Recent government policy in the United Kingdom has encouraged marginalized youth to acquire human and social capital in order to enhance their social mobility prospects. While literature observes how community-based organisations, such as sports clubs, hold potential to facilitate the accumulation of such capital, other scholarship has advocated that the acquisition of positive psychological capital—comprising of self-efficacy, hope, optimism and resilience—is equally necessary to actualise social mobility. However, few studies have explored how participation in community-based interventions may facilitate this form of capital. Utilizing data collected from youth participants and club coaches who engaged with a sport-based project delivered in London (UK), this article will focus on two main concerns. First, it will highlight how opportunities offered within community-based organisations may enable the development of positive psychological capital, and second, offer tentative insights into the conditions that are necessary to enhance elements of positive psychological capital through sport.

Abstract:The promotion of physical activity for older people is dominated by biomedically informed polices emphasizing the prescription of exercise as medicine and a universal approach to the promotion of active aging in later life. Yet, more recent research recognizes that being physically active in later life is complex and contested, shaped by the intersections of biological, psychological, and sociological experiences, and requires differentiated responses that address this complexity. There is a disconnect between research, policy, and the physical activity experiences of older people which leads to over-generalized policy and practice in the promotion and delivery of community sport to older people. This paper presents findings from a complex community sport project employing a coproduction framework with low income older age people. Participatory community approaches including focus group discussions, and extended observations and informal conversations throughout the project develop understanding of the complexities of aging and community sport engagement among older people with limited income. Three themes are identified and discussed: (1) lived experience, aging bodies, and the changing dynamics of involvement in sport and exercise in the life course, (2) embodying aging-moving beyond practical barriers for understanding aging, lived experience and being physically active, and (3) corporeal pleasures of older sporting bodies. The paper concludes that there is a need to explore the significance of locally specific public knowledge from older people which directly addresses the complexity and inequalities of individuals' everyday lives in their communities; lived experiences likely to impact on preferences for, engagement in, and enjoyment of physical activity.

Abstract:Community sports clubs are one of the dominant sports delivery mechanisms around the world, yet they have received relatively little attention in the academic literature. This study specifically aims to contribute to the understanding of barriers and resistance to formalization through examining the workings of four small sports clubs in New Zealand. Drawing on a case study approach, we found that the clubs had been reasonably successful, yet still used a traditional 'kitchen-table' approach with no or little evidence of formalization and professionalization, which we argue can be explained by Bourdieu's theory of cultural reproduction. Specifically, we show how the club committee incumbents reproduced a habitus that prized social and symbolic capital over economic and cultural capital. Further, we note that, despite the government agency's production and dissemination of 'how to' materials, there were few incentives or resources for the small clubs to formalize and professionalize within New Zealand.

The Role of Community Sports Programs in Promoting Social Cohesion

Abstract:Purpose: The general objective of this study was to examine the role of community sports programs in promoting social cohesion. Methodology: The study adopted a desktop research methodology. Desk research refers to secondary data or that which can be collected without fieldwork. Desk research is basically involved in collecting data from existing resources hence it is often considered a low cost technique as compared to field research, as the main cost is involved in executive’s time, telephone charges and directories. Thus, the study relied on already published studies, reports and statistics. This secondary data was easily accessed through the online journals and library. Findings: The findings reveal that there exists a contextual and methodological gap relating to the role of community sports programs in promoting social cohesion. Community sports programs played a pivotal role in fostering social cohesion by providing opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to engage in physical activity and social interaction. These programs helped break down social barriers, promote inclusivity, and reduce social inequalities by targeting underrepresented groups. Participants developed a sense of belonging and mutual respect, which enhanced social skills and networks. The positive impacts extended beyond individuals to the broader community, creating safe spaces and increasing community engagement, volunteerism, and civic participation. Overall, community sports programs significantly contributed to building stronger, more inclusive communities. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The study integrated Social Capital Theory, Social Identity Theory, and Ecological Systems Theory to explain how community sports programs enhance social cohesion, emphasizing the importance of social networks, group identity, and environmental interactions. Practitioners were advised to design inclusive and accessible programs, train coaches and volunteers in social cohesion skills, and incorporate activities that encourage teamwork and social interaction. Policymakers were recommended to invest in sports facilities, ensure inclusivity, and integrate sports programs with other community services to amplify their impact. These contributions provided a comprehensive framework for understanding the theoretical, practical, and policy aspects of community sports programs in promoting social cohesion.

Abstract:Introduction Although the benefits of physical activity are widely recognised, levels of inactivity are considerably higher for children and young people with disabilities than those without. Young people with disabilities struggle to access inclusive opportunities and there is a lack of research surrounding users’ experiences of disability sport more generally. This research aimed to explore members’ experiences of a community-based wheelchair basketball club and its impact on daily life. Method Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 disabled and able-bodied members of the club (aged 6–25 years) to gain an in-depth understanding of their experiences. Findings Inductive thematic analysis identified an overarching theme of ‘wheelchair basketball elicits strong emotions’ and four main themes of ‘positive social interactions’, ‘benefitting health and independence’, ‘changing perceptions of disability’ and ‘a meaningful occupation that opens doors’. Participants reported positive experiences of wheelchair basketball, which improved their physical and mental health whilst increasing opportunities for socialisation and encouraging acceptance of disability. Conclusion The findings have implications at individual, organisational and societal levels, and provide some justification for the role of occupational therapy in disability sport. The findings demonstrate the potential for inclusive community sports clubs to improve health and social outcomes for individuals, regardless of disability.

An evaluation of a mental health literacy program for community sport leaders

Abstract:Community sports coaches and leaders can have an important role to play as informal resources for sporting adolescents and adults at risk of mental ill-health. Supporting coach mental health literacy using programs has potential to enhance opportunities for coach-player support. This study aimed to evaluate a community sport mental health literacy program and its capacity to improve club leader confidence to support and refer (primary outcome), awareness of resources, beliefs about mental health and stigmatizing attitudes (social distance). A cluster-randomized controlled evaluation was conducted with measures taken at baseline (around 2 weeks prior to intervention), immediately post-program and at a nine-month follow up. Twenty-five community Australian Rules Football clubs from metropolitan and regional centres were sampled and matched by size and location. Coaches or sport leaders ( n = 265) were randomized by club to either the intervention group or a waitlist control group. A multivariate analysis of variance (pre-test scores as covariates) revealed participants in the 'Tackle Your Feelings' (TYF) program reported improved outcomes compared to controls on measures tied to leader confidence to support and refer, knowledge of resources to support mental health, general help-seeking and stigmatizing attitudes tied to social distance. A fifth measure of beliefs about mental illness was not impacted by the program. A nine-month comparison group follow-up indicated some decay in scores over time. The results suggest that TYF programs can be effective at improving coach mental health literacy in community sporting club contexts.
Commercial sport organisations and community capacity building: a case study of two surf parks

Abstract:Commercial sector sport organisations increasingly lead innovation in sport delivery and consumption. Despite this, the ways in which sport contributes to community capacity building and sport-for-development has only ever been considered from public and third sector perspectives. Using a qualitative dual case study approach in the commercial surf park context, this research examined how commercial sport organisations can contribute to community capacity building. The findings demonstrate how partnerships among commercial, public and third sector actors encouraged mutual organisational capacity building among partners, facilitated diverse inter-community ties and capacity building outcomes in the wider community. Recognising the role commercial sport actors can play in community capacity building, and equally, the potential utility of lifestyle sports in sport-for-development, engenders a more inclusive, holistic understanding of sport-for development. The findings support the contention that effective community capacity building through sport requires sport actors to align more with less-traditional partners not ordinarily considered part of the recognised sport system.

Abstract:Sport is considered to have a high potential with respect to social participation of people with disabilities, in particular in inclusive settings. However, people with disabilities continue to face social exclusion in sport, as they are underrepresented in organized mainstream sport activities and disability sport often remains separate. Thus, organized community sport can both support and foster but also restrict or even impede social participation of people with disabilities resulting in that the organized sport's contribution to social participation is also critically questioned. This article provides a systematic review of current research on social participation of people with disabilities in organized community sport in separated and inclusive settings. The review of 25 relevant studies revealed four topics based on Koster and colleagues' applied theoretical framework that are associated with social participation in organized community sport: (1) social contacts, interactions and friendships, (2) identity, self-perception and acceptance, (3) social support and (4) community integration. The results draw a rather ambivalent picture of social participation of people with disabilities in organized community sport. However, most of the studies showed positive social benefits to people with disabilities for both separated and inclusive setting with respect to the four topics that underscore the potential of organized sport. However, there are also studies reporting negative aspects people with disabilities experienced, in particular when participating in inclusive settings. This article concludes by pointing to capacity building of disability and mainstream community sport organizations in order to strengthen the positive effects while minimizing and mitigating the negative effects to ensure effective social participation of people with disabilities.

Abstract:Research question: This paper aims to provide new insights into why community sports volunteers engage with intellectual disability as a form of diversity, and how these drivers impact on the opportunities and activities provided for athletes with intellectual disabilities.Research methods: The authors use a critical diversity management framework, combined with theoretical tenets of ableism, to explore volunteers' engagement with disability. The paper draws on a ten-month ethnographic study undertaken in a community sports club in Melbourne, Australia, that had recently introduced two specialist teams for individuals with intellectual disabilities.Results and findings: The findings indicate the business case for diversity as a driver for the club to engage with sport for people with intellectual disabilities; this, in turn, created tension and conflict amongst volunteers, resulting in a separation of the disability team from the main club activity.Implications: Ableist discourses underpinned the business case for diversity held by some club volunteers, resulting in the disability team not being integrated into the club as part of its core business. Policy makers and advocates of diversity must critically consider the drivers of clubs for engaging in the different areas of diversity, and how this might impact on provision.

Abstract:This paper considers the role and limitations of mutual aid associations in meeting society’s needs. It does this by examining responses of community sports clubs (CSCs) in the UK to COVID-19 restrictions. We firstly make the case that CSCs typify mutual aid associations. Using two qualitative research studies we show how the clubs’ responses focused on meeting the needs of their own members, expressing bonding rather than bridging social capital. Clubs’ resilience was facilitated by the commitment of key volunteers, understood as serious leisure, and the complete overlap of governance and delivery in club management. These insights allow us to discuss the potential and limitations of this particular type of mutual aid association in meeting society’s needs, and qualify general assertions that the voluntary sector would respond to the COVID-19 crisis by developing social capital. It reinforces the need for a typology of the voluntary sector to inform understanding and research.

Abstract:Purpose: This paper presents a study of atmospheric climate impacts on community-level sports clubs' (CLSC) in Australia and Canada, their vulnerability and resilience, and organisational responses.Design/Methods: A qualitative methodology was used with a multiple case research design. Data (interviews, documents) was collected from a sample of 23 CLSC organisations managing grass turf sport fields exposed to climatic extremes in temperate regions of both countries.Findings: CLSCs in both nations experienced vulnerability to climate impacts. Direct damage to playing fields resulted from extreme climate events. Indirect impacts include higher injury risks, interrupted and/or cancelled competitions, insurance risks, plus higher operating and capital costs. Adapted management was evident for water resources, playing turf, and organisational policies.Practical Implications: Provides insights into the changing practice of sport management at the community-level.Research Contribution: The results challenge the assumption that climate is a static and benign resource for sport. This study demonstrates impacts of climate extremes on sport in the northern and southern hemispheres, the potential for adapting sport management practices, and developing resilience.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to add to the conceptual discussion on eSport, analyze the role of eSport within sport management, and suggest avenues for future eSport research. The authors suggest that debates surround the degree to which eSport represents formal sport, and disagreements likely stem from conceptualizations of sport and context. Irrespective of one’s notion of eSport as formal sport, the authors suggest the topic has a place in sport management scholarship and discourse. Such a position is consistent with the broad view of sport adopted by Sport Management Review, the perspective that eSport represents a form of sportification, and the association among eSport and various outcomes, including physical and psychological health, social well-being, sport consumption outcomes, and diversity and inclusion. Finally, the authors conclude that eSport scholarship can advance through the study of its governance, marketing, and management as well as by theorizing about eSport.

The Current Youth Sport Landscape: Identifying Critical Research Issues

Abstract:Youth sport participation has been found to have many beneficial physical, psychological, and social consequences, as well as risks for those involved. If the benefits are to outweigh the detriments, youth sport must be thoughtfully constructed. Research can play a major role in understanding how to positively structure youth sport. This paper describes how the youth sport landscape has changed over the past 4 decades and how these changes may influence the outcomes of involvement. Critical issues of contemporary concern in youth sport that urgently need scientific attention include physically based issues (e.g., role of youth sport in combating physical inactivity, youth sport injuries), psychological issues (e.g., reducing stress and burnout, enhancing young athletes’ mental health), access and structural issues (e.g., lack of opportunities for poor and less-skilled youth), sport culture issues (e.g., the professionalization of youth sport, child safety, maltreatment and bullying), issues associated with significant others (e.g., coach, sport parent, and peer influences and needs), economic issues (e.g., youth sport as business), governmental and legislative issues (e.g., the need to become more politically active in the setting of policy, legislation, and funding), and translational science and program-evaluation issues (e.g., the need for research dissemination and evaluation research).

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Ecological models have been applied to investigate multiple domains influencing physical activity behaviour, including individual, social, organisational, community, environmental and policy factors. With regard to the built environment, research to date has been limited to small geographical areas and/or small samples of participants. This study examined the geographical association between provision of sport facilities and participation in sport across an entire Australian state, using objective total enumerations of both, for a group of sports, with adjustment for the effect of socioeconomic status (SES).METHODS: De-identified membership registration data were obtained from state sport governing bodies of four popular team sports. Associations between participation rate, facility provision rate and SES were investigated using correlation and regression methods.RESULTS: Participation rate was positively associated with provision of facilities, although this was complicated by SES and region effects. The non-metropolitan region generally had higher participation rates and better provision of facilities than the metropolitan region.CONCLUSIONS: Better provision of sports facilities is generally associated with increased sport participation, but SES and region are also contributing factors. Implications for public health: Community-level analysis of the population, sport participation and provision of facilities should be used to inform decisions of investments in sports facilities.
