Abstract:This study was designed to determine how sports programs in Rwanda are contributing to accomplishing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) in poverty reduction. Structured questionnaires, interviews, and focus groups were extensively used to collect data from 256 sports stakeholders. Descriptive statistics and a structural equation model (SEM) were used to estimate the impact of the selected indicators on the level of poverty reduction in Rwanda. The results indicated that though the contribution of sports programs is very significant in achieving the SDGs including poverty alleviation, the concept is not fully accepted since there are lapses in its implementation process due to the lack of capacity building and good governance in the sports sector. Also, it was discovered that the most pressing challenge in implementing sports programs is reaching out to stakeholders to enhance their understanding of the contribution that sports programs play in attaining the SDGs. This study supports the work of the United Nations in using sports modules as an essential tool in realizing its Seventeen SDGs. It further gives additional evidence of the existence of the correlation between sports programs and the achievement of SDGs as well as alleviating poverty. The most significant limitation lies in the fact that sports program management direction lacks empirical studies. This study recommends that the Rwanda government including relevant stakeholders and authorities should seize the opportunity to assess its current state of affairs, review its sports program policies, capacity building activities, and act appropriately.

Abstract:Worldwide, 1.3 billion people live in Poverty , a socio-economic status that has been identified as a key determinant of a lack of sports participation. Still, numerous athletes around the world have grown up in underprivileged socio-economic conditions. This is the case in Brazil, a country with around 13.5 million impoverished citizens, yet, over decades, many of its best professional footballers have emerged from its favelas. In this article, we explore the role of the socio-cultural-economic constraints in shaping the development of skill and expertise of Brazilian professional football players. The methodological and epistemological assumptions of the “ Contextualized Skill Acquisition Research ” (CSAR) approach are used as an underpinning framework for organizing and analyzing data. Results suggested that, at the exosystemic level of Brazilian society, Poverty emerges as an influential constraint that can potentially enrich football development experiences of Brazilian players. Poverty , however, is not the direct causation of outstanding football skill development. Rather, from the perspective of ecological dynamics, Poverty creates specific contexts that can lead to the emergence of physical as well as socio-cultural environment constraints (e.g., Pelada, Malandragem ) that can shape affordances (opportunities) for skill acquisition. These ideas suggest the need to ensure that environmental constraints can support people to amuse themselves cheaply, gain access to employment opportunities and maintain health and well-being through (unstructured and more structured) sport and physical activities in dense urban environments such as favelas, inner city areas, and banlieues. For this purpose, design of open play areas and even parkour installations can provide affordances landscapes for physical activity and sports participation in urban settings.
Influence of Accessible Sports Facilities on Community Health Outcomes in Tanzania

Abstract:Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess the influence of accessible sports facilities on community health outcomes in Tanzania. Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries. Findings: The study indicated that the presence of easily reachable sports amenities significantly boosts physical activity levels among community members. This increased engagement in regular exercise leads to improved physical health, reducing the incidence of chronic diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular ailments, and diabetes. Additionally, accessible sports facilities foster mental well-being by providing venues for stress relief, social interaction, and community bonding. Such facilities promote inclusivity, allowing individuals of varying ages and abilities to participate in physical activities, thereby enhancing overall community health. Furthermore, the availability of these facilities is linked to better health education and awareness, encouraging healthier lifestyle choices. The cumulative effect is a more active, healthier, and socially cohesive community, demonstrating the critical role of accessible sports facilities in enhancing public health outcomes. Implications to Theory, Practice and Policy: Social ecological model (SEM), health belief model and theory of planned behaviour may be used to anchor future studies on assessing the influence of accessible sports facilities on community health outcomes. Community planners and designers should prioritize the development of inclusive and well-maintained sports facilities that cater to diverse populations. Policymakers should prioritize funding for the construction and maintenance of sports facilities, particularly in underserved areas. This can involve allocating resources specifically for community parks and recreational centers to ensure equitable access.

Abstract:Purpose : The aim of this study was to examine whether, drawing on the perception of their coaches, the application of the pedagogical model of sport education could be associated with satisfying the basic psychological needs of children from socially vulnerable backgrounds. Method : A 36-session sport education season was implemented within a community program for youths from disadvantaged environments. Three coaches, one researcher, and 31 children aged 9–11 years (17 boys and 14 girls) of diverse ethnicities participated. Qualitative data were obtained through four focus groups conducted during the program in addition to the research diary of the researcher, who played the role of participant observer. Results : The coaches observed a progressive evolution in the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs of competence, autonomy, relatedness, and the need referred to as novelty. Discussion/Conclusion : We may conclude that sport education can be a valuable tool to improve the satisfaction of these needs in children from socially vulnerable backgrounds.

Abstract:In the manuscript, grounded in secondary research, I present literature reviews and statistics outlining the benefits and constraining factors related to the engagement in sports among socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals. Sports serve as a highly effective tool for facilitating social integration and ensuring equal opportunities. It is crucial to examine the sporting consumption habits of the disadvantaged target group and identify inhibitory factors to assist decision-makers in supporting measures for promoting equal opportunities. To alleviate social disparities, it is essential to establish conditions that guarantee long-term participation for everyone in economic and social life. Recognizing and promptly addressing disadvantages that manifest early in life are key factors for success in later life. Providing support to needy children, expanding their opportunities, and reinforcing a comprehensive system of child protection and well-being are fundamental for their successful integration into society.

The impact of a sport-for-education programme in the South African context of poverty

Abstract:This article reports on a baseline study of a school-based, incentive-driven, sport-for-development programme (Mighty Metres) in the South African context of poverty. It is underpinned by multiple theoretical frameworks (the interpretative phenomenological approach). The baseline study entailed retrospective social impact collected from 15 schools where the Mighty Metres programme was implemented. A mixed-method approach was used for conducting 57 interviews and 35 focus group sessions, and 159 questionnaires were completed by learners and 29 by school and cluster coordinators. Various models of implementation render nuanced findings at meso- and micro-levels. At the meso-level findings relate to associative branding, improved image and recruitment capacity for schools, regular physical activity, inclusivity and a decrease in absenteeism. Parents obtained ‘bragging rights’, and teachers and learners improved their physical and health profiles, reported improved inter-personal relations, recognition and psychological benefits.

Abstract:As the literature is far from being unanimous in regards to the psychosocial benefits of sports practice, we conducted a preliminary qualitative study with nine teenagers who participated in a group sporting challenge to better understand: (1) youths’ perceptions regarding the program’s most important dimensions and (2) its effects in the physical, psychological and social spheres of their life. Following these results, we highlighted six driving principles we consider to be significant to interventions involving sports as a tool for psychosocial development: (1) cooperation amongst youth; (2) facilitators’ discipline, direct involvement and positive attitude; (3) moving the youths beyond their physical, psychological and social comfort zones; (4) the interplay between enjoyment and effort; (5) constant innovation in training content; (6) risk as a driving force for cohesion and social ties.

Abstract:Abstract This article presents the results of a study on the perspectives of stakeholders from mainstream and specialized sports settings on seven strategies that could boost the impact of sports on social inclusion of people with intellectual disability. These strategies are: 1) developing Unified Sports, 2) conducting activities to raise awareness, 3) providing training to coaches, 4) using shadows, 5) developing a peer-support structure, 6) having a resource person available when needed, and 7) facilitating engagement in nonplaying roles. The perspectives of 28 stakeholders regarding the advantages, disadvantages, and considerations for implementation of the different strategies were gathered in discussion groups. Findings could help diversify opportunities for athletes with intellectual disability and develop programs and policies that contribute to building inclusive communities through sports.

Abstract:Recent government policy in the United Kingdom has encouraged marginalized youth to acquire human and social capital in order to enhance their social mobility prospects. While literature observes how community-based organisations, such as sports clubs, hold potential to facilitate the accumulation of such capital, other scholarship has advocated that the acquisition of positive psychological capital—comprising of self-efficacy, hope, optimism and resilience—is equally necessary to actualise social mobility. However, few studies have explored how participation in community-based interventions may facilitate this form of capital. Utilizing data collected from youth participants and club coaches who engaged with a sport-based project delivered in London (UK), this article will focus on two main concerns. First, it will highlight how opportunities offered within community-based organisations may enable the development of positive psychological capital, and second, offer tentative insights into the conditions that are necessary to enhance elements of positive psychological capital through sport.

Abstract:Considering the disparity between mental health services and resources available in Nigeria, researchers have highlighted the need for organizations, policymakers, and health service providers to revamp their approaches. Due to its unifying nature and cultural importance in the youth population, grassroots sport programming has been shown to be an effective mechanism in promoting education and life skills. In Lagos, Nigeria, the Basketball Experience program was designed to promote physical well-being, healthy living, mental health, and life skills in Nigerian youth utilizing principles from the Resilience and Youth Development Module. Researchers interviewed seven female and three male coaches using a phenomenological approach to investigate their perspectives of the program's impact on themselves and the youth they coach. Results suggest that implementing mental health education and resilience development, specifically through positive mentorship and strategies such as breathing and mindfulness exercises, into a sport for development program can assist with increased knowledge and reduced mental health stigma. Coaches strongly endorsed increased use of programs like Basketball Experience to promote positive development and combat the disparity in mental health literacy and policy, and they suggested that such programs have the power to help restructure the longstanding cycle of negative stressors inherent to life in Nigeria. Based on these perspectives, the authors discuss how grassroots sport programming can be an effective tool in the development of both coaches and youth. Moreover, the authors advocate for the Resilience and Youth Development Module as an impactful theoretical framework for facilitating resilience and life skills in coaches and youth.

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the psychological outcomes of engaging in adaptive sports for individuals with disabilities. Methods and Materials: This qualitative study utilized semi-structured interviews with 23 participants ranged from 18 to 55 years, with a mean age of 32 years who are actively involved in adaptive sports. Participants were selected through a purposive sampling technique to ensure a diverse representation in terms of age, gender, type of disability, and sport. Data collection focused on participants' personal experiences with adaptive sports, with an emphasis on psychological impacts. Theoretical saturation was achieved to ensure comprehensive coverage of the experiences. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify main themes and categories within the psychological outcomes of adaptive sports participation. Findings: The analysis revealed five main themes associated with the psychological outcomes of participating in adaptive sports: Emotional Well-being, Social Integration, Personal Empowerment, Cognitive Outcomes, and Adaptation and Coping. Under Emotional Well-being, participants reported improvements in emotional resilience, self-esteem, joy and fulfillment, and anxiety reduction. Social Integration was characterized by a strengthened sense of belonging, enhanced social support, and improved communication skills. Personal Empowerment was evident through increased autonomy, goal achievement, and personal growth. Cognitive Outcomes included better concentration and focus, as well as enhanced problem-solving skills. Lastly, Adaptation and Coping were observed through the development of effective coping mechanisms, increased resilience, and acceptance of disability. Conclusion: The study concludes that adaptive sports play a significant role in enhancing the psychological well-being of individuals with disabilities. Participation in adaptive sports leads to improvements in emotional well-being, social integration, personal empowerment, cognitive functions, and adaptive coping strategies. These findings underscore the importance of promoting and facilitating access to adaptive sports as a means of supporting the mental health and overall quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
The psychosocial impact of wheelchair tennis on participants from developing countries

Abstract:Purpose: Individuals with physical disabilities in developing countries can experience many instances of psychosocial hardship. Although scholars have suggested that participation in sport can positively impact psychosocial health, few studies have explored this phenomenon within the disabled population of developing nations. Methods: Sixteen wheelchair tennis players were recruited across six developing countries and interviewed in regards to their experiences. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, transcribed verbatim and subject to thematic analysis. Results: Wheelchair tennis players perceived their participation in sport enhanced their psychosocial well-being. Three broad themes emerged from analysis of the interviews; (1) developed transferrable skills, (2) perceived personal growth and (3) benefits of an athletic identity. Conclusions: Sports participation, in this case wheelchair tennis, may be a viable means to promote psychosocial well-being in disabled populations within developing nations. Moreover, sport holds the potential to challenge negative perceptions of disability at an individual and societal level within these cultures. Implication for Rehabilitation Individuals with physical disabilities in developing countries may experience psychosocial hardship and cultural stigma. Wheelchair sport may be a viable means to enhance psychosocial well-being in this population. Skills learnt "on court" are transferrable to everyday life potentially improving independence and quality of life. Identifying as an athlete can challenge negative cultural perceptions of disability.
Assessing the Societal Value of Sports Engagement: Evidence to Support Active Living as Intrinsic to Sustainable Asian Urbanization

Abstract:The rapid expansion of urban areas has exacerbated public health challenges including non-communicable diseases and reduced well-being. To address such issues, integrating community needs into urban planning through the ‘healthy cities’ concept has gained prominence. While literature recognizes associations between physical activity, health and social progress, limited research examines the multidimensional impacts of sports participation across diverse Asian settings. This study aimed to analyze the effects of sports engagement on health and sustainability indicators among urban Asian populations. A mixed-methods approach combined surveys of 87 residents aged 18-65 years in three group with stakeholder discussions. Relationships between recreational involvement, self-rated health, behaviors, quality of life, infrastructure usage and community participation were examined through statistical tests. Regular physical activity was significantly correlated with improved health status, well-being, social networks and infrastructure provision. Access to sports facilities near residences, public spaces and workplaces best predicted activity levels. Unexpectedly, women and older adults exhibited comparable or higher involvement than counterparts. Residents of Group A, despite infrastructure barriers, demonstrated the highest frequencies. Grassroots initiatives temporarily utilizing public areas cost-effectively encouraged participation. Recognizing recreation holistically within urban planning empowers inclusive progress. Evidence supports mainstreaming affordable, equitable sports provision as basic urban infrastructure. Continued research elucidating participation determinants guides equitable strategies maximizing recreational roles in building healthy, equitable Asian communities amid transformations. As urbanization intensifies health challenges, participatory sports hold untapped potential for cultivating thriving communities if embedded comprehensively within developmental visions prioritizing populace wellness.
Sport development in rural schools of Lephalale in Limpopo province: Barriers and facilitators

Abstract:Background: Sports development and promotion of physical activities (PA) through various sports in rural schools of South Africa (SA) is essential to optimise growth and wellbeing of children. There is a paucity of research specific to rural areas, and this is implicated on the lack of resources, effective programmes as well as resources to promote structured PAs and sports. Objectives: To explore sports development facilitators and barriers in rural schools. Method: We conducted an exploratory qualitative study and recruited Life Orientation (LO) teachers and school principals. We established structured interview guidelines and recorded the interviews which were transcribed verbatim. Data saturation was reached by the eighth participant. The data were analysed using thematic content analysis. Results: Participating schools experienced shared challenges in developing and promoting PAs. Five themes emerged addressing the barriers: sport facilities, time management, workload, financial constraints, and lack of participation. Six categories emerged as facilitators: intrapersonal factors, interpersonal factors, personal, social, physical and mental benefits. Conclusion: Most rural schools in Lephalale district struggle to promote and develop sports because of several targeted factors. These schools have little to no strategic plans to develop and promote sports because of the prioritisation of the core curriculum and/or examinable subjects in classroom duties which is deemed their highest priority. Clinical implications: Implementation of tailored sports development policies in rural schools via acquisition of resources, education regarding the positive impact of sport, and focused planning is required. Healthcare professionals such as physiotherapists may aid in the encouragement of sports.
Benefits of sport and physical activity for the disabled: implications for the individual and for society

Abstract:An increase of physical activity is commonly recommended to those with physical disability, but it is necessary to distinguish competitive sport from fitness programmes, remedial gymnastics and active recreation. Potential benefits of enhanced activity are reviewed. Likely psychological gains include an improvement of mood-state, with a reduction of anxiety and depression, an increase of self-esteem and feelings of greater self-efficacy. Sociological gains include new experiences, new friendships, and a countering of stigmatization. Perceived health is improved, and in a more long-term perspective there is a reduced risk of many chronic diseases. Finally, there is a greater likelihood of employment, with less absenteeism and enhanced productivity. Both the health and the industrial benefits have a potential to yield cost savings that could make an important contribution toward the expense of suitably adapted physical activity programmes. It is concluded that the physically disabled should be encouraged to engage in physical activity, although further large-scale longitudinal studies are needed to determine the optimal type of programme for such individuals.

The Benefits and Barriers of Sport for Children From Low-Income Settings: An Integrative Literature Review

Abstract:The purpose of this integrative review was to examine the existing literature about the emotional and social benefits, as well as barriers and facilitators to sport participation for children from low-income settings. Thematic analysis was performed yielding three major themes: (1) emotional benefits of sport participation; (2) social benefits of sport participation; and (3) barriers and facilitators to sport participation. Overall, the thirteen studies showed positive emotional and social benefits for sport participation; however, one study found decreased mental health and one reported no significant findings. Facilitators such as psychological safety and social support are needed to encourage sport participation as significant barriers to sport participation continue to exist for children from low-income settings. Future areas of research include more longitudinal studies related to the role of sport, the environment, coaching style, and investigation into why participation rates continue to be decreased for children from low-income settings despite added social supports.

Traditional sports, such as wrestling, running, and indigenous games, play a crucial role in promoting physical health, social skills, and cultural identity among young people. These activities provide a platform for youth to develop discipline, teamwork, and leadership qualities, which are essential for their personal growth and future success. Additionally, traditional sports foster a strong sense of community cohesion by bringing together individuals from different backgrounds and generations, reinforcing social bonds and cultural heritage. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Social learning theory, ecological systems theory & symbolic interactionism may be used to anchor future studies on the impact of traditional Kenyan sports and physical activities on youth development and community cohesion. Community organizations and educational institutions should integrate traditional Kenyan sports into youth programs to leverage their benefits for physical and social development. Policymakers should advocate for increased funding and resources dedicated to traditional sports programs.
Urban Youth, Worklessness and Sport: A Comparison of Sports-based Employability Programmes in Rotterdam and Stoke-on-Trent

Abstract:The potential value of sport as a vehicle through which urban regeneration and social renewal policy can be delivered has been extensively examined. However, there are an increasing number of initiatives aiming to use sports-based programmes as a way to address worklessness and social exclusion amongst young people which have received less attention. This paper provides a critical comparative analysis of two such programmes, one based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and the other in Stoke-on-Trent in the UK. Using qualitative data collected from participants, staff and other stakeholders, the paper details the nature and perceived merits of the programmes before considering the limitations and constraints of employability initiatives using sport. The paper concludes by suggesting that a fundamental shift in policy discourse is required for such programmes to be able to achieve sustainable positive outcomes for workless young people with complex problems and needs.

Abstract:Guatemala is a country with a long history of conflict, poverty and violence that still affects young people. However, their exist non-governmental organizations such as Guatemalan Olympic Foundation (FUNOG) whose purpose is imparting sport and Olympic values as educational principles of the institution. The aim of this study is to describe the sport, health, and psychological characteristics of the youth who participate in this organization. The research's objectives were accomplished through a quantitative methodology and the involvement of 91 participants. Results emphasised the participants' elevated levels of physical activity exceeded those of other youth of same ages. No link was found between the level of physical activity and other personal or health variables. Age was negatively correlated with factors pertaining to meaning in life but not with dialectics. A correlation was found between self-esteem and goals, tasks, and empathy, but health literacy was negatively correlated with interpersonal relationships. These data incentivise us to design and evaluate sport programmes not only as an educational strategy to promote health literacy and social-emotional skills, but also to improve the perception of the purpose of life.
