A Comparison on Undergraduates' Global Competency and Experience in Research University between China and South Korea

Abstract:Fostering students' global competency is considered a key task for today's universities, and also the inner motivation for the developed countries to promote the internationalization of higher education institutions. Comparing the results of the questionnaire investigation in Nanjing University in China and Seoul National University in Korea, the present paper finds that there is no obvious difference in the global understanding competency for the students in both universities, and in terms of global interaction competency in the low grade(freshman and sophomore), Nanjing University is significantly stronger than Seoul National University, although no difference is found in the high grade(junior and senior). According to the comparison on the global experiences, it is found that Seoul National University provides more global academic and interaction experiences for the students. Cluster analysis and regression analysis further indicate that there exists an obvious correlation between global experiences and competency, and the experiences of global interaction will play a more significant effect on the development of students' both abilities above. For Chinese universities' international development, the national level should ponder the important value of the cultivation of "global talent"; the university level is supposed to promote the cultivation of "global talent" by financial and policy support; and in the student level, we ought to help them establish the identity consciousness of "global talent" and encourage them to participate in various global experiences.
