Abstract:This is a survey on recent progresses in the study of branching processes with immigration, generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes and affine Markov processes. We mainly focus on the applications of skew convolution semigroups and the connections in those processes.

Abstract:A special type of immigration associated with measure-valued branching processes is formulated by using skew convolution semigroups. We give characterization for a general inhomogeneous skew convolution semigroup in terms of probability entrance laws. The related immigration process is constructed by summing up measure-valued paths in the Kuznetsov process determined by an entrance rule. The behavior of the Kuznetsov process is then studied, which provides insights into trajectory structures of the immigration process. Some well-known results on excessive measures are formulated in terms of stationary immigration processes.

Abstract:This work provides a brief introduction to continuous-state branching processes (CB-processes) and continuous-state branching processes with immigration (CBI-processes) accessible to graduate students with reasonable background in probability theory and stochastic processes. In particular, we give a quick development of the stochastic equations of the processes and some immediate applications. The proofs given here are more elementary than those appearing in the literature before. We have made them readable without requiring too much preliminary knowledge on branching processes and stochastic analysis. In Section 1, we review some properties of Laplace transforms of finite measures on the positive half line. In Section 2, a construction of CB-processes is given as rescaling limits of Galton--Watson branching processes. This approach also gives the physical interpretation of the CB-processes. Some basic properties of the processes are developed in Section 3. The Laplace transforms of some positive integral functionals are calculated explicitly in Section 4. In Section 5, the CBI-processes are constructed as rescaling limits of Galton--Watson branching processes with immigration. In Section 6, we present reconstructions of the CB- and CBI-processes by Poisson random measures determined by entrance laws, which reveal the structures of the trajectories of the processes. Several equivalent formulations of martingale problems for CBI-processes are given in Section 7. From those we derive the stochastic equations of the processes in Section 8. Using the stochastic equations, some characterizations of local and global maximal jumps of the CB- and CBI-processes are given in Section 9. In Section 10, we prove the strong Feller property and the exponential ergodicity of the CBI-process under suitable conditions using a coupling based on one of the stochastic equations.

Abstract:Functional limit theorems are established for continuous-state branching processes with immigration (CBIs), where the reproduction laws have finite first moments and the immigration laws exhibit large tails. Abstract:Branching processes and Fleming-Viot processes are two main models in stochastic population theory. Incorporating an immigration in both models, we generalize the results of Shiga (1990) and Birkner et al. (2005) which respectively connect the Feller diffusion with the classical Fleming-Viot process and the alpha-stable continuous state branching process with the Beta(2-alpha, alpha)-generalized Fleming-Viot process. In a recent work, a new class of probability-measure valued processes, called M-generalized Fleming-Viot processes with immigration, has been set up in duality with the so-called M-coalescents. The purpose of this article is to investigate the links between this new class of processes and the continuous-state branching processes with immigration. In the specific case of the $\alpha$-stable branching process conditioned to be never extinct, we get that its genealogy is given, up to a random time change, by a Beta(2-alpha, alpha-1)-coalescent.

Abstract:Following the pivotal work of Sevastyanov, who considered branching processes with homogeneous Poisson immigration, much has been done to understand the behaviour of such processes under different types of branching and immigration mechanisms. Recently, the case where the times of immigration are generated by a non-homogeneous Poisson process was considered in depth. In this work, we try to demonstrate how one can use the framework of point processes in order to go beyond the Poisson process. As an illustration, we show how to transfer techniques from the case of Poisson immigration to the case where it is spanned by a determinantal point process.

Abstract:We consider the setting of either a general non-local branching particle process or a general non-local superprocess, in both cases, with and without immigration. Under the assumption that the mean semigroup has a Perron-Frobenious type behaviour for the immigrated mass, as well as the existence of second moments, we consider necessary and sufficient conditions that ensure limiting distributional stability. More precisely, our first main contribution pertains to proving the asymptotic Kolmogorov survival probability and Yaglom limit for critical non-local branching particle systems and superprocesses under a second moment assumption on the offspring distribution. Our results improve on existing literature by removing the requirement of bounded offspring in the particle setting [21] and generalising [43] to allow for non-local branching mechanisms. Our second main contribution pertains to the stability of both critical and sub-critical non-local branching particle systems and superprocesses with immigration. At criticality, we show that the scaled process converges to a Gamma distribution under a necessary and sufficient integral test. At subcriticality we show stability of the process, also subject to an integral test. In these cases, our results complement classical results for (continuous-time) Galton-Watson processes with immigration and continuous-state branching processes with immigration; see [22,40,42,48,51], among others. In the setting of superprocesses, the only work we know of at this level of generality is summarised in [34]. The proofs of our results, both with and without immigration, appeal to similar technical approaches and accordingly, we include the results together in this paper.

Abstract:We prove a general fluctuation limit theorem for Galton-Watson branching processes with immigration. The limit is a time-inhomogeneous OU type process driven by a spectrally positive Levy process. As applications of this result, we obtain some asymptotic estimates for the conditional least-squares estimator of the offspring means and variances of the offspring and immigration distributions.

Abstract:We study age-structured branching models with reproduction law depending on the remaining lifetime of the parent. The lifespan of an individual is decided at its birth and its remaining lifetime decreases at the unit speed. The models without or with immigration are constructed as measure-valued processes by pathwise unique solutions of stochastic equations driven by time-space Poisson random measures. In the subcritical branching case, we give a sufficient condition for the ergodicity of the process with immigration. Two large number laws and a central limit theorem of the occupation times are proved.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a triangular array of branching processes with non-stationary immigration. We prove a weak convergence of properly normalized branching processes with immigration to deterministic function under assumption that immigration is rowwise $\psi-$mixing and the offspring mean tends to its critical value 1, immigration mean and variance controlled by regularly varying functions. Moreover, we obtain a fluctuation limit theorem for branching process with immigration when immigration is $m-$dependent where $m$ may tend to infinity with the row index at a certain rate. In this case the limiting process is a time-changed Wiener process. Our results extend and improve the previous known results in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider $n$-type Markov branching processes with immigration and resurrection. The uniqueness criteria are first established. Then, a new method is found and the explicit expression of extinction probability is successfully obtained in the absorption case, the mean extinction time is also given. The recurrence and ergodicity criteria are given if the state ${\bf 0}$ is not absorptive. Finally, if the resurrection rates are same as the immigration rates, the branching property and decay property are discussed in detail, it is shown that the process is a superimposition of a $n$-type branching process and an immigration. The exact value of the decay parameter $\lambda_Z$ is given for the irreducible class ${\bf Z}_+^n$. Moreover, the corresponding $\lambda_Z$-invariant measures/vectors and quasi-distributions are presented.

Abstract:We investigate subcritical Galton-Watson branching processes with immigration in a random environment. Using Goldie's implicit renewal theory we show that under general Cramér condition the stationary distribution has a power law tail. We determine the tail process of the stationary Markov chain, prove point process convergence, and convergence of the partial sums. The original motivation comes from Kesten, Kozlov and Spitzer seminal 1975 paper, which connects a random walk in a random environment model to a special Galton-Watson process with immigration in a random environment. We obtain new results even in this very special setting.
