Abstract:Although a relatively new area of nanoscience, nonlinear plasmonics has become a fertile ground for the development and testing of new ideas pertaining to light–matter interaction under intense field conditions, ideas that have found a multitude of applications in surface science, active photonic nanodevices, near-field optical microscopy, and nonlinear integrated photonics. In this review, we survey the latest developments in nonlinear plasmonics in three-dimensional (metallic) and two-dimensional (graphene) nanostructures and offer an outlook on future developments in this field of research. In particular, we discuss the main theoretical concepts, experimental methods, and computational tools that are used together in modern nonlinear plasmonics to explore in an integrated manner nonlinear optical properties of metallic and graphene based nanostructures.

Abstract:High-order optical vortices are inherently unstable, as they tend to split up under perturbation to a series of vortices with unity charge. Control over the perturbation opens up a new degree of freedom to control and tune their location in a 2D-space, with immediate implications on trapping, light-matter interactions and super-resolution imaging. Here, we present a continuous nano-scale tuning of the spatial location of plasmonic vortices on metal-air interface achieved by varying the polarization state of the light coupled to the surface plasmons through a spiral slit. We demonstrate such a control at nano-scale resolution using phase-resolved near-field microscopy.

Abstract:We present a theoretical study of plasmonic lattice solitons (PLSs) formed in two-dimensional (2D) arrays of metallic nanowires embedded into a nonlinear medium with Kerr nonlinearity. We analyze two classes of 2D PLSs families, namely, fundamental and vortical PLSs in both focusing and defocusing media. Their existence, stability, and subwavelength spatial confinement are studied in detail.

Abstract:We demonstrate an experimental result that shows the phase singularity of surface plasmon waves generated by the direct transform of optical vortices at normal incidence focused on a structureless metal surface. The near-field two-dimensional intensity distribution near the focal plane is experimentally examined by using near-field scanning optical microscopy and shows a good agreement with the finite-difference time-domain simulation result. The experimental realization demonstrates a potential of the proposed excitation scheme to be reconfigured locally with advantages over structures milled into optically thick metallic films for plasmonics applications involving plasmonic vortices.

Abstract:Photonic nanoparticle arrays present a unique platform for exploring optical topological phenomena. In this study, we incorporate the concept of synthetic dimensions into the plasmonic system, which allows us to investigate Weyl physics within a chain of metallic nanoparticles. By introducing two extra periodic positional parameters into the chain, we construct a synthetic three-dimensional space that gives rise to synthetic Weyl points (WPs). Our findings reveal that the chain maintains topologically protected edge modes even when the inversion symmetry of the chain is broken. The topological properties of these edge modes are intrinsically linked to the WPs within the synthetic three-dimensional space. However, degenerate edge modes emerge exclusively in chains possessing inversion symmetry. Furthermore, we uncover the bulk-edge correspondence in the chains, yielding a deeper understanding of the topological nature of edge modes in systems without symmetry. Our research not only clarifies the topological origin of a class of edge states within asymmetric nanoparticle chains but also provides perspectives for realizing higher-dimensional topological effects in nanoparticle arrays.
When Plasmonic Colloids Meet Optical Vortices -- A Brief Review

Abstract:Structured light has emerged as an important tool to interrogate and manipulate matter at micron and sub-micron scale. One form of structured light is an optical vortex beam. The helical wavefront of these vortices carry orbital angular momentum which can be transferred to a Brownian colloid. When the colloid is made of metallic nanostructures, such as silver and gold, resonant optical effects play a vital role, and the interaction leads to complex dynamics and assembly. This brief review aims to discuss some recent work on trapping plasmonic colloids with optical vortices and their lattices. The role of optical scattering and absorption has important implications on the underlying forces and torques, which is specifically enunciated. The effect of spin and orbital angular momentum in an optical vortex can lead to spin-orbit coupling dynamics, and these effects are highlighted with examples from the literature. In addition to assembly and dynamics, enhanced Brownian motion of plasmonic colloids under the influence of a vortex-lattice is discussed. The pedagogical aspects to understand the interaction between optical vortex and plasmonic colloids is emphasized.

Dynamics of optically directed assembly and disassembly of plasmonic nanoplatelet arrays

Abstract:Studies of nanoparticle-based optical matter have only considered spherical constituents. Yet nanoparticles with other shapes are expected to have different local electromagnetic field distributions and therefore interactions with neighbors in optical matter arrays. Therefore, one would expect their dynamics to be different as well. We investigate directed-assembly of ordered arrays of plasmonic nanoplatelets in optical line traps demonstrating reconfigurability of the array by altering the phase gradient via holographic beam shaping. The weaker gradient forces on and resultant slower motion of the nanoplatelets as compared with plasmonic nanospheres allows precise study of their assembly and disassembly dynamics. Both temporal and spatial correlations are detected between particles separated by some hundreds of nanometers to several microns. Electrodynamics simulations reveal the presence of multipolar plasmon modes that induce short range (near-field) and longer range electrodynamic interactions. These interactions cause both the strong correlations and the non-uniform dynamics observed. Our findings demonstrate new opportunities to generate complex adressable optical matter by exploiting interference between mutipolar plamon modes and create novel active optical technology.

Abstract:Metasurfaces and photonic crystals have revolutionized classical and quantum manipulation of light and opened the door to studying various optical singularities related to phases and polarization states. However, traditional nanophotonic devices lack reconfigurability, hindering the dynamic switching and optimization of optical singularities. This paper delves into the underexplored concept of tunable bilayer photonic crystals (BPhCs), which offer rich interlayer coupling effects. Utilizing silicon nitride-based BPhCs, we demonstrate tunable bidirectional and unidirectional polarization singularities, along with spatiotemporal phase singularities. Leveraging these tunable singularities, we achieve dynamic modulation of bound-state-in-continuum states, unidirectional guided resonances, and both longitudinal and transverse orbital angular momentum. Abstract:We predict theoretically that stable subwavelength plasmonic lattice solitons (PLSs) are formed in arrays of metallic nanowires embedded in a nonlinear medium. The tight confinement of the guiding modes of the metallic nanowires, combined with the strong nonlinearity induced by the enhanced field at the metal surface, provide the main physical mechanisms for balancing the wave diffraction and the formation of PLSs. As the conditions required for the formation of PLSs are satisfied in a variety of plasmonic systems, we expect these nonlinear modes to have important applications to subwavelength nanophotonics. In particular, we show that the subwavelength PLSs can be used to optically manipulate with nanometer accuracy the power flow in ultracompact photonic systems.

Abstract:Singular optics aims to understand and manipulate light's topological defects, pioneered by the discovery that phase vortex lines, strands of destructive interference, naturally occur in scalar wave fields. Monochromatic electromagnetic fields, however, are described by complex three-dimensional vectors that make individual scalar phase vortices in their vector components, which depend on the choice of co-ordinate basis, less meaningful. Instead, polarisation singularities can capture the vector texture of complicated, even non-paraxial light, with separate spatial descriptions for the electric $\mathbf{E}$ and magnetic $\mathbf{H}$ fields. But polarisation textures, too, are basis-dependent, because the laws of electromagnetism can be expressed not only by separate $\mathbf{E}$ and $\mathbf{H}$ fields, but by linear combinations of the two. We instead propose fundamental, basis-independent topological features generic in monochromatic electromagnetic fields: one- and two-dimensional structures that relate to time-averaged symmetries, including parity, duality and time-reversal, held locally by the combined electric and magnetic field polarisation geometry.

Geometric frustration in ordered lattices of plasmonic nanoelements

Abstract:Inspired by geometrically frustrated magnetic systems, we present the optical response of three cases of hexagonal lattices of plasmonic nanoelements. All of them were designed using a metal-insulator-metal configuration to enhance absorption of light, with elements in close proximity to exploit near-field coupling, and with triangular symmetry to induce frustration of the dipolar polarization in the gaps between neighboring structures. Both simulations and experimental results demonstrate that these systems behave as perfect absorbers in the visible and/or the near infrared. Besides, the numerical study of the time evolution shows that they exhibit a relatively extended time response over which the system fluctuates between localized and collective modes. It is of particular interest the echoed excitation of surface lattice resonance modes, which are still present at long times because of the geometric frustration inherent to the triangular lattice. It is worth noting that the excitation of collective modes is also enhanced in other types of arrays where dipolar excitations of the nanoelements are hampered by the symmetry of the array. However, we would like to emphasize that the enhancement in triangular arrays can be significantly larger because of the inherent geometric incompatibility of dipolar excitations and three-fold symmetry axes.

Polarization-Addressable Optical Movement of Plasmonic Nanoparticles and Hotspot Spin Vortices

Abstract:Spin-orbit coupling in nanoscale optical fields leads to the emergence of a nontrivial spin angular momentum component, transverse to the orbital momentum. In this study, we initially investigate how this spin-orbit coupling effect influences the dynamics in gold monomers. We observe that localized surface plasmon resonance induces self-generated transverse spin, affecting the trajectory of the nanoparticles as a function of the incident polarization. Furthermore, we investigate the spin-orbit coupling in gold dimers. The resonant spin momentum distribution is characterized by the unique formation of vortex and anti-vortex spin angular momentum pairs on opposite surfaces of the nanoparticles, also affecting the particle motion. These findings hold promise for various fields, particularly for the precision control in the development of plasmonic thrusters and the development of metasurfaces and other helicity-controlled system aspects. They offer a method for the development of novel systems and applications in the realm of spin optics.

Abstract:Vortex crystals are geometric arrays of vortices found in various physics fields, owing their regular internal structure to mutual interactions within a spatially confined system. In optics, vortex crystals may form spontaneously within a nonlinear resonator but their usefulness is limited by the lack of control over their topology. On the other hand, programmable devices used in free space, like spatial light modulators, allow the design of nearly arbitrary vortex distributions but without any intrinsic dynamics. By combining non-Hermitian optics with on-demand topological transformations enabled by metasurfaces, we report a solid-state laser that generates vortex crystals with mutual interactions and actively-tunable topologies. We demonstrate 10x10 coherent vortex arrays with nonlocal coupling networks that are not limited to nearest-neighbor coupling but rather dictated by the crystal's topology. The vortex crystals exhibit sharp Bragg diffraction peaks, witnessing their coherence and high topological charge purity, which we resolve spatially over the whole lattice by introducing a parallelized analysis technique. By structuring light at the source, we enable complex transformations that allow to arbitrarily partition the orbital angular momentum inside the cavity and to heal topological charge defects, making these resonators a robust and versatile tool for advanced applications in topological optics.

Abstract:The dislocation created in the topological material lays the foundation of many significant findings to control light but requires delicate fabrication of the material. To extend its flexibility and reconfigurability, we propose the magnetic dislocation concept and unveil its properties in a representative model, which effectively combines the topological defect and edge mode at the magnetic domain wall. The results include distinct localization modes and robust light trapping phenomena with the rainbow feature where the eigen-energy of each light-trapping state can be linearly tuned by the magnetic dislocation. The conversion from the trapping state to edge modes can be harnessed by further adiabatically pumping light across an amount of the magnitude of the magnetic dislocation. Our work solves a fundamental problem by introducing magnetic dislocation with new light-manipulation flexibility, which may be implemented in a variety of platforms in photonic, acoustics, and optomechanics with dynamic modulations and synthetic dimensions.

Abstract:Over the past decade, orbital angular momentum has garnered considerable interest in the field of plasmonics owing to the emergence of surface-confined vortices, known as plasmonic vortices. Significant progress has been made in the generation and manipulation of plasmonic vortices, which broadly unveil the natures of plasmonic spin–orbit coupling and provide accessible means for light–matter interactions. However, traditional characterizations in the frequency domain miss some detailed information on the plasmonic vortex evolution process. Herein, an exotic spin–orbit coupling phenomenon is demonstrated. More specifically, we theoretically investigated and experimentally verified a temporally deuterogenic vortex mode, which can be observed only in the time domain and interferes destructively in the intensity field. The spatiotemporal evolution of this concomitant vortex can be tailored with different designs and incident beams. This work extends the fundamental understanding of plasmonic spin–orbit coupling and provides a unique optical force manipulation strategy, which may fuel plasmonic research and applications in the near future.

Optical N-plasmon: Topological hydrodynamic excitations in Graphene from repulsive Hall viscosity

Abstract:Edge states occurring in Chern and quantum spin-Hall phases are signatures of the topological electronic band structure in two-dimensional (2D) materials. Recently, a new topological electromagnetic phase of graphene characterized by the optical N-invariant has been proposed. Optical N-invariant arises from repulsive Hall viscosity in hydrodynamic many-body electron systems, fundamentally different from the Chern and Z2 invariants. In this paper, we introduce the topologically protected edge excitation -- optical N-plasmon of interacting many-body electron systems in the topological optical N-phase. These optical N-plasmons are signatures of the topological plasmonic band structure in 2D materials. We demonstrate that optical N-plasmons exhibit fundamentally different dispersion relations, stability, and edge profiles from the topologically trivial edge magneto plasmons. Based on the optical N-plasmon, we design an ultra sub-wavelength broadband topological hydrodynamic circulator, which is a chiral quantum radio-frequency circuit component crucial for information routing and interfacing quantum-classical computing systems. Furthermore, we reveal that optical N-plasmons can be effectively tuned by the neighboring dielectric environment without breaking the topological properties. Our work provides a smoking gun signature of repulsive Hall viscosity and opens practical applications of topological electromagnetic phases of two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:In the long-wavelength limit, Bloch-band Berry curvature has no effect on the bulk plasmons of a two-dimensional electron system. In this Letter we show instead that bulk plasmons are a probe of real-space topology. In particular, we focus on orbital Skyrme textures in twisted transition metal dichalcogenides, presenting detailed semiclassical and quantum mechanical calculations of the optical conductivity and plasmon spectrum of twisted ${\rm MoTe}_2$.
