Abstract:In this paper, four rectangular slits with the same size and regular rotation angle are regarded as the meta-atom, arranged on circular contours, to create plasmonic vortex lenses (PVLs) solely based on the geometric phase. These PVLs can achieve the same purpose of exciting surface plasmon polariton (SPP) vortices with arbitrary combinations of topological charge (TC) when illuminated by circularly polarized (CP) light with different handedness as the traditional PVLs. Furthermore, they can generate SPP vortices with different TCs and specific constant or varying electric-field intensities when excited by linearly polarized (LP) light, which marks the first instance of this phenomenon solely through geometric phase manipulation. The TC can be dynamically altered by controlling the polarization order of the incident vector beam. These PVLs not only possess advantages in terms of device miniaturization and the creation of a more uniform vortex field, as compared to PVLs based on the transmission phase, but also offer a more straightforward design process in comparison to traditional structures that rely solely on the geometric phase.

Abstract:Optical vortices, which are beams with helical wavefronts and spiral phase mismatches, have garnered considerable attention in various fields. In this study, we theoretically proposed and experimentally implemented a simple method for generating first-order optical vortices. To generate first-order vortex beams using the polarization field in the momentum space of photonic crystal slabs, topological half charges are required. We propose a method to divide the polarization vortex in the momentum space by breaking symmetry, which results in Dirac points or circularly polarized points. This approach enables the transformation of topological integer charges into topological half-integer charges, thereby facilitating the generation of first-order vortex beams. This approach extends the application of bound states in continuum and topological photonics.

Abstract:Like free-space vortex beams, surface plasmon polaritons can carry orbital angular momentum to form plasmonic vortices (PVs). Recently, research interest in PV fundamentals and applications has increased. However, generating and manipulating the topological charges of PVs over wide ranges using on-chip devices remains challenging. Here, we propose an on-chip plasmonic metalens structure to generate tunable PV sequence with controllable topological charges at discrete wavelengths. When compared with conventional spiral-slit structures, the designed metalens has additional structural parameters that bring more degrees of freedom to control the range and interval of the topological charge distribution of the PV sequence. Analytical and simulation methods are used to verify the metalens' functionality. It is proved that the topological charges of the generated PV sequence are symmetrically distributed about the fundamental mode (l = 0), which cannot be realized by a traditional Archimedean helix. In addition, the normalized powers of the PV sequence are all above 0.8, showing that the designed metalens structure has potential for use as an on-chip optical vortex comb device. This work has potential applications in on-chip optical information processing, integrated optical communications, and optical tweezers.

Manipulating Forces in Optical Vortex Using Plasmonic Bumps

Abstract:In this paper, small plasmonic nanobumps, which consist of metal/dielectric layers are placed on the ring of optical vortex to enhance electric field ampltiude. In this paper, a plasmonic nanobump is placed on the ring of smaller optical vortex. The smaller optical vortex form from the resultant topological phase between the handedness of the incident circular polarized light and the nanoslits spiral. Different designs of plasmonic nanobump are investigated, and tapered nanobump produced higher field enhancement due to higher surface charge density at the tapering end. Higher field intensity at the tip of the plasmonic nanobump produces lower potential, which attract nanoparticle to the region. The optical force increases by the square of the electric field amplitude. This high electric field intensity at the plasmonic nanobump functions as attractive node, which trap molecules inside the optical vortex. Additional plasmonic nanobumps are added onto the other locations of the optical vortex to manipulate the particle trapping positions. This allows the precise control of molecule's position and movement for imaging, characterization and analysis, which is useful for mobile lab-on-chip devices.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), namely, as plasmonic vortices, have attracted considerable attention in optical trapping, quantum information processing, and communications. The previous studies of near-field OAM are limited to generate only one single plasmonic vortex, which inevitably degrades further on-chip applications. Geometric metasurfaces, two-dimensional counterpart of metamaterials, enable the unprecedented capability in manipulating the phase, polarization, and amplitude of electromagnetic waves, providing a flexible platform in controlling plasmonic vortices. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an approach to realize the multiplexing of terahertz (THz) plasmonic vortices based on geometric metasurfaces. Under the illumination of circularly polarized THz waves, multiple plasmonic vortices with identical topological charges are generated at the metal/air interface. Furthermore, the conversion from spin angular momentum to multiple plasmonic OAM, i.e., multiple plasmonic vortices with different topological charges, is also demonstrated. Geometric metasurfaces consisting of paired air-slits with different in-plane orientations are designed to demonstrate these characteristics. Our proposed approach may open an avenue for on-chip applications with increasing information capacity.

Abstract:Electromagnetic waves carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), namely, vortex beams, have a plethora of applications ranging from rotating microparticles to high-capacity data transmissions, and it is a continuing trend in manipulating OAM with higher degrees of freedom. Here, an approach to control terahertz (THz) near-field plasmonic vortex based on geometric and dynamic phase is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By locally tailoring the orientation angle (geometric phase) and radial position (dynamic phase) of aperture arrays embedded in an ultrathin gold film, the excited surface waves can be flexibly engineered to form both spin-independent and spin-dependent THz plasmonic vortex field distributions, resulting in multi-degree of freedom for controlling OAM of THz surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Arbitrary OAM values of THz plasmonic vortex and coherent superposition between two OAM states are investigated based on near-field scanning terahertz microscopy (NSTM) system. The proposed approach provides unprecedented freedom to modulate THz near-field plasmonic vortex, which will have potential applications in THz communications and quantum information processing.

Abstract:A novel plasmonic vortex lens (PVL) consisting of an array of gold film nanoslits for vortex-field generation with arbitrary topological charges and positions is proposed. The performance of the PVL is analyzed theoretically and demonstrated numerically by the finite-element method. By utilizing a symmetric and antisymmetric phase, the plasmonic vortex generated at the center of the PVL can carry arbitrary topological charges (integer or fraction). Two circularly polarized illuminations with opposite spins can excite a composite plasmonic vortex field with symmetry-breaking distribution, in which the breaking point rotates with the phase difference between two spins. In addition, we can shift the center of the plasmonic vortex to any desired position such that a flexible location manipulation of the plasmonic vortex is achieved. The designed PVL can also work as a miniaturized polarimeter for characterizing the state of polarization of the incident light.

Abstract:Over the past decade, orbital angular momentum has garnered considerable interest in the field of plasmonics owing to the emergence of surface-confined vortices, known as plasmonic vortices. Significant progress has been made in the generation and manipulation of plasmonic vortices, which broadly unveil the natures of plasmonic spin–orbit coupling and provide accessible means for light–matter interactions. However, traditional characterizations in the frequency domain miss some detailed information on the plasmonic vortex evolution process. Herein, an exotic spin–orbit coupling phenomenon is demonstrated. More specifically, we theoretically investigated and experimentally verified a temporally deuterogenic vortex mode, which can be observed only in the time domain and interferes destructively in the intensity field. The spatiotemporal evolution of this concomitant vortex can be tailored with different designs and incident beams. This work extends the fundamental understanding of plasmonic spin–orbit coupling and provides a unique optical force manipulation strategy, which may fuel plasmonic research and applications in the near future.

Abstract:Light beams with helical wave fronts, also called optical vortices, have attracted great interest in the community of optics and photonics. They provide an additional degree of freedom for light manipulation, leading to wide-ranging potential applications in micro-particle trapping, optical microscopy, and even quantum information processing. Recently, metallic microstructures are introduced to confine the plasmonic vortices into deep subwavelength dimension, which benefits photonic integration on chip. In this Letter, exploiting the excitation of spoof surface plasmon, we experimentally demonstrate the near-field optical vortices with tunable topological charges supported by a single metaparticle in the microwave regime. These microwave plasmonic-like vortices are excited by surface waves with a spatial asymmetric distribution of electromagnetic field, which are launched by a metallic comb-shaped waveguide. Experimental characterization of highly localized and controllable near-field vortices with the nature of deep subwavelength confirms the numerical simulation. In addition, an equivalent physical model based on the coupled mode theory is proposed to understand the generation mechanism of these spoof plasmonic vortices. Our approach offers an efficient way to generate deterministic subwavelength optical vortices, which provides the potential for critical vortex elements on photonic integrated chip.

Abstract:High-order optical vortices are inherently unstable, as they tend to split up under perturbation to a series of vortices with unity charge. Control over the perturbation opens up a new degree of freedom to control and tune their location in a 2D-space, with immediate implications on trapping, light-matter interactions and super-resolution imaging. Here, we present a continuous nano-scale tuning of the spatial location of plasmonic vortices on metal-air interface achieved by varying the polarization state of the light coupled to the surface plasmons through a spiral slit. We demonstrate such a control at nano-scale resolution using phase-resolved near-field microscopy.

Abstract:Plasmonic vortices have shown a wide range of applications in on-chip photonics due to their fascinating properties of the orbital angular momenta (OAM) and phase singularity. However, conventional devices to generate them suffer from issues of low efficiencies and limited functionalities. Here, we establish a systematic scheme to construct high-efficiency bifunctional metasurfaces that can generate two plasmonic vortices exhibiting distinct topological charges, based on a series of reflective meta-atoms exhibiting tailored reflection-phases dictated by both resonant and geometric origins. As a benchmark test, we first construct a meta-coupler with meta-atoms exhibiting geometric phases only, and experimentally demonstrate that it can generate a pre-designed plasmonic vortex at the wavelength of 1064 nm with an efficiency of 27% (56% in simulation). Next, we design/fabricate two bifunctional metasurfaces with meta-atoms integrated with both resonant and geometric phases, and experimentally demonstrate that they can generate divergent (or focused) or convergent (or defocused) plasmonic vortices with district OAM as shined by circularly polarized light with opposite helicity at 1064 nm wavelength. Our work provides an efficient platform to generate plasmonic vortices as desired, which can find many applications in on-chip photonics.

Abstract:The generation of photons with spin and orbital angular momentum is of great importance in the fields of classical and quantum optical communications. Recent studies show that optical vortices with on-demand angular momentum can be realized with geometric phase-controlled metasurfaces. However, such optical vortices have two spin-locked orbital angular momentum states, which are difficult to distinguish in the same propagating direction. While the beam steering of the optical vortices can be easily realized in the linear optical regime, it remains elusive in the nonlinear optical counterpart. Here, we propose to generate and spatially separate the spin-locked second-harmonic vortex beams through phase gradient plasmonic metasurfaces. Based on the concept of the nonlinear geometric phase, the fork-type phase distributions are encoded onto the metasurfaces by using gold meta-atoms with a threefold rotational symmetry. Under the pumping of fundamental waves in the near-infrared regime, the spin-locked optical vortices at second-harmonic frequency are generated and then projected to different diffraction orders. The proposed strategy may have important applications in high-dimensional optical information processing.

Abstract:A series of plasmonic devices are proposed to generate multipatterned and two-dimensional optical lattices with or without helicity. Both the spin and orbital angular momentum of incident beam together with the excited polygonal plasmonic mode contribute to the formation of optical lattices due to the spin-orbit coupling. The impact of the mode property of incident beams on lattice pattern deforming is also discussed. Due to the compactness and flexible tunability, we believe that this work would facilitate the utilization of optical lattices in various on-chip applications.

Abstract:Terahertz vortices prompt numerous advanced applications spanning classical and quantum communications, sensing, and chirality-based detection, owing to the inherent physical properties of terahertz waves and orbital angular momentum (OAM). Nonetheless, existing methodologies for generating terahertz vortices face challenges such as unalterable topological charges and intricate feed networks. To address these limitations, we propose a novel approach to generate multi-mode and tunable vortex beams based on chiral plasmons. Through eigenmode analysis, the uniform helical gratings are demonstrated to support chiral plasmons carrying OAM. By leveraging their vortex characteristics and introducing modulation into the periodic system, these chiral plasmons are alternatively diffracted into high-purity vortex radiations according to the Bragg law. To validate the theory, the vortex beam emitter is fabricated and measured in the microwave regime based on the modulated scheme. Experimental results confirm the emission of vortex beams with desirable phase distributions and radiation patterns. Our findings highlight the potential of chiral plasmons as seeds for tunable and compact vortex radiation, offering promising applications in tunable vortex sources.

Abstract:Light beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the form of optical vortices have attracted great interest due to their capability for providing a new dimension and approach to manipulate light–matter interactions. Recently, plasmonics has offered efficient ways to focus vortex beams beyond the diffraction limit. However, unlike in the visible and near‐infrared regime, it is still a big challenge to realize plasmonic vortices at far‐infrared and even longer wavelengths. An effective strategy to create deep‐subwavelength near‐field electromagnetic (EM) vortices operating in the low frequency region is proposed. Taking advantage of the asymmetric spatial distribution of EM field supported by a metallic comb‐shaped waveguide, plasmonic vortex modes that are strongly confined in a well‐designed deep‐subwavelength meta‐particle with desired topological charges can be excited. Such unique phenomena are confirmed by the microwave experiments. An equivalent physical model backed up by the numerical simulations is performed to reveal the underlying mechanism of the plasmonic vortex generation. This spoof‐plasmon assisted focusing of EM waves with OAM may find potentials for functional integrated elements and devices operating in the microwave, terahertz, and even far‐infrared regions.

Abstract:In this work, plasmonic metasurfaces with abrupt phase discontinuities operating in high order modes are investigated for manipulating the wavefront of light. We first design two types of meta-super-cells consisting of V-shaped antennas with the phase shift coverage larger than 2π. And then, we create two linear gradient phased metasurfaces using the designed cells, which exhibit exceptional abilities for light-steering functioned as meta-echelette gratings operating in high order diffraction modes, may be valuable for using in high resolution spectrographs and advantage to achieve high numerical aperture plasmonic lenses. Based on the new designed super cells we further build another two azimuthal gradient phased metasurfaces that are able to generate high order optical vortex beams. Our results could lead to wide applications in photonic research.

Abstract:The highly localized and uneven spatial distribution of the subwavelength light field in metal metasurfaces provides a promising means for the generation of optical vortices (OVs) with arbitrary topological charges. In this paper, a simple and reliable way for generating multichannel OVs on gold nanoporous metasurfaces is reported. The instantaneous field of arbitrary-order OVs can be regulated and concentrated on the same focal surface by adapting photonic spin–orbit interaction (SOI) and geometric phase. The focal ring energy distribution of OVs along the conical propagation path is accurately calculated, and the double phase of units induced by spin rotation is confirmed. Based on the parameter optimization of the nanohole arrangement, the simultaneous amplitude and phase modulation of multichannel OVs has been realized. Furthermore, the average multichannel signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 15 dB, which meets the requirements of high resolution and low crosstalk. Our study obtains broadband and efficient OVs, which can contribute to improving the capacity storage and security of optical information and possess great application prospects in beam shaping, optical tweezers, and communication coding.

Dynamically Sculpturing Plasmonic Vortices: from Integer to Fractional Orbital Angular Momentum

Abstract:As a fundamental tool for light-matter interactions, plasmonic vortex (PV) is extremely useful due to the unique near field property. However, it is a pity that, up to now, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by PVs could not be dynamically and continuously tuned in practice as well as the properties of fractional PVs are still not well investigated. By comparing with two previously reported methods, it is suggested that our proposal of utilizing the propagation induced radial phase gradient of incident Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beam is a promising candidate to sculpture PVs from integer to fractional OAM dynamically. Consequently, the preset OAM of PVs could have four composing parts: the incident spin and orbital angular momentum, the geometric contribution of chiral plasmonic structure, and the radial phase gradient dependent contribution. Moreover, an analytical expression for the fractional PV is derived as a linear superposition of infinite numbers of integer PVs described by Bessel function of the first kind. It is also shown that the actual mean OAM of a fractional PV would deviate from the preset value, which is similar with previous results for spatial fractional optical vortices.

Abstract:In recent years, optical vortex beams possessing orbital angular momentum have caught much attention due to their potential for high capacity optical communications. This capability arises from the unbounded topological charges of orbital angular momentum (OAM) that provides infinite freedoms for encoding information. The two most common approaches for generating vortex beams are through fork diffraction gratings and spiral phase plates. While realization of conventional spiral phase plate requires complicated 3D fabrication, the emerging field of metasurfaces has provided a planar and facile solution for generating vortex beams of arbitrary orbit angular momentum. Here we realize a novel type of geometric metasurface fork grating that seamlessly combine the functionality of a metasurface phase plate for vortex beam generation, and that of a linear phase gradient metasurface for controlling the wave propagation direction. The metasurface fork grating is therefore capable of simultaneously controlling both the spin and the orbital angular momentum of light.
