Abstract:The critical phenomenon of the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition has been investigated in the reactions Zn-64+Zn-64, Ni-64+Ni-64 and Zn-70+Zn-70 at beam energy of 35 MeV/nucleon. Yields of fragments arising from fragmenting quasi-projectiles (QPs) with different neutron-proton asymmetries were analyzed within the framework of the Landau free energy approach. Fits to the free energy of fragments as a function of fragment asymmetry showed three minima, indicating the system to be in a regime of a first-order phase transition. The QP temperature estimates were extracted from the analysis of N=Z fragment data. Additionally, we make use of a recent method based on quantum fluctuations of fermions to derive temperatures and densities of selected QPs. Critical scaling of these observables is found for systems which differ in neutron to proton asymmetry. The derived critical exponent beta = 0.35 +/- 0.01, belongs to the liquid-gas universality class.

Abstract:We discuss briefly the phases of nuclear single particle motion and collective motion. Meanwhile we review the status of the research on the phase structure of the vibration, axially symmetric rotation and gamma-soft rotation of the collective motion and the shape phase transition induced by nucleon number and angular momentum. In addition we depict simply the nuclear liquid gas phase transition as well as the deconfinement and chiral phase transition of strong interacting matter.

Abstract:We review the status of the research on the phase structure and phase transitions of nucleus and strong interacting matter briefly. It shows that the related studies are the very active current frontier commonly interested by nuclear physics, particle physics, astrophysics, cosmology, statistical physics and other areas. A lot of significant progress has been made. However, not only concrete problems but also researching approaches need to be studied further.

Abstract:We study the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition on the basis of a two-component lattice gas model. A Metropolis type of sampling method is used to generate microscopic states in the canonical ensemble. The effective equation of state and fragment mass distributions are evaluated in a wide range of temperatures and densities. A definition of the phase coexistence region appropriate for mesoscopic systems is proposed. The caloric curve resulting from different types of freeze-out conditions are presented.

Abstract:The nuclear liquid-gas transition from a gas of hadrons to a nuclear phase cannot be determined numerically from conventional lattice QCD due to the severe sign problem at large values of the baryon chemical potential. In the strong coupling regime of lattice QCD with staggered quarks, the dual formulation is suitable to address the nuclear liquid gas transition. We determine this first order transition at low temperatures and as a function of the quark mass and the inverse gauge coupling $\beta$. We also determine the baryon mass and discuss the nuclear interactions as a function of the quark mass, and compare to mean field results.

Abstract:A self-consistent description for hot Lambda hypernuclei in hypothetical big boxes is developed within the relativistic Thomas-Fermi approximation in order to investigate directly the liquid-gas phase coexistence in strangeness finite nuclear systems. We use the relativistic mean-field model for nuclear interactions. The temperature dependence of Lambda hyperon density, Lambda hyperon radius, excitation energies, specific heat, and the binding energies of Lambda hypernuclei from O-16(Lambda) to Pb-208(Lambda) in phase transition region are calculated by using the subtraction procedure in order to separate the hypernucleus from the surrounding baryon gas. The Lambda central density is very sensitive to the temperature. The radii of Lambda hyperon at high temperature become very large. In the relativistic Thomas-Fermi approximation with the subtraction procedure, the properties of hypernuclei are independent of the size of the box in which the calculation is performed. The level density parameters of hypernuclei in the present work are confirmed to be almost constant at low temperature. It is also found that the single-Lambda binding energies of Lambda hypernuclei are largely reduced with increasing temperature.

Abstract:Reactions of nuclear multifragmentation of excited finite nuclei can be interpreted as manifestation of the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition. During this process the matter at subnuclear density clusterizes into hot primary fragments, which are located in the vicinity of other nuclear species. In recent experiments there were found evidences that the symmetry and surface energies of primary fragments change considerably as compared to isolated cold or low-excited nuclei. The new modified properties of primary fragments should be taken into account during their secondary de-excitation.

Abstract:The thermodynamic properties of nuclei are studied in a mean field model using a Skryme interaction. Properties of two component systems are investigated over the complete range of proton fraction from a system of pure neutrons to a system of only protons. Besides volume, symmetry, and Coulomb effects we also include momentum or velocity dependent forces. Applications of the results developed are then given which include nuclear mechanical and chemical instability and an associated liquid/gas phase transition in two component systems. The velocity dependence leads to further changes in the coexistence curve and nuclear mechanical and chemical instability curves.

Abstract:In this paper we focus on three mass regions where first-order phase transitions occur, namely, for N=40 , 60, and 90. We investigate four isotopic chains (Se, Zr, Mo, and Nd) in the framework of microscopic Skyrme-Hartree-Fock + Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer calculations for 15 different parametrizations. The microscopic calculations show the typical behavior expected for first-order phase transitions. To find the best candidate for the critical point phase transition we propose different microscopic position and occupation indices calculated for positive-parity and negative-parity proton and neutron single-quasiparticle states around the Fermi level. The microscopic calculations are completed by macroscopic calculations within the algebraic collective model (ACM), and compared with the experimental data for Se74 , Mo102 , and Nd150 , considered to be the best candidates for the critical-point nuclei. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.110.024317 ©2024 American Physical Society

The nuclear liquid-gas transition in QCD

Abstract:We estimate the nuclear saturation density and the binding energy in a nuclear liquid from precision data on the coupling of the four-quark scattering vertex in the vector channel, computed within functional QCD. We show that this coupling is directly related to the density-density potential and the latter is used for the estimates. In a first qualitative computation we find a saturation density of 0.2 fm${}^{-3}$ and an upper bound for the binding energy of 21.5 MeV, in agreement with the empirical values of 0.16 fm${}^{-3}$ and 16 MeV, respectively. We also use the scattering vertex for constructing an emergent low-energy effective theory for the liquid gas transition from QCD correlation function, whose coupling parameters can be determined within QCD. As a first consistency check of this construction we estimate the in-medium reduction of the nucleon pole mass.

Abstract:The Incomplete-Fusion-Fragmentation Model has been used to reproduce nicely the experimental evidence of liquid-gas phase transition probed in the reaction of Au + Au at 600A MeV. The analysis of the relative yields of decay modes for the projectile remnant as a function of [Z(bound)] shows clearly the competition and transformation processes of various decay modes of projectile remnant with decreasing of [Z(bound)] The agreement between theoretical and experimental results for the analysis of relative yield of decay modes indicates that the experimental evidence of liquid-gas phase transition is composed of the decay mode transformations.

Abstract:Properties of the liquid-gas (LG) phase transition of thermal nuclear matter are investigated within the relativistic Hartree-Fock (RHF) theory, focusing on the role played by the in-medium balance between nuclear attraction and repulsion. Applying the RHF Lagrangian PKA1, rather different critical properties and LG phase diagrams are obtained in contrast to the other popular relativistic Lagrangians. Aiming at such notable model deviations, a series of testing parametrizations x kappa(rho) (kappa(rho) being the rho-tensor coupling strength) are proposed to bridge PKA1 and other popular Lagrangians. Along the systematics from PKA1 to the x kappa(rho) series and further to other popular Lagrangians, it is illustrated that the in-medium balance of nuclear attraction and repulsion, manifested as various modeling of the nuclear in-medium effects, is essential for the van der Waals-like behaviors of thermal nuclear matter, in which the residual nuclear in-medium effects deduced from the dominant attractive and repulsive channels play a significant role. Our study paves a way to model the in-medium nuclear interactions from the thermal statistic aspects of nuclear systems, e.g., referring to the critical temperature from future delicate experiments.

Abstract:Based on the difference between the Fermi distributions at zero temperature and at the finite temperature, we introduce the temperature-dependent three-body force (TBF) into the microscopic finite-temperature Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory (FTBHF). In terms of the meson-exchange current approach, i.e. the one boson exchange (OBE) approximation, the exchange of four important mesons pi, rho, sigma and omega are considered. Using the FTBHF theory including TBF, we describe the critical temperature of the liquid-gas phase transition for symmetric nuclear matter and discuss its change trend with the increasing asymmetry parameter. Compared to the result excluding TBF, the value of the critical temperature turns out to be smaller.

Abstract:By means of the Furnstahl, Serot and Tang's model, the effects of surface tension and Coulomb interaction on the liquid–gas phase transition for finite nuclei are investigated. A limit pressure plim above which the liquid–gas phase transition cannot take place has been found. It is found that comparing to the Coulomb interaction, the contribution of surface tension is dominate in low temperature regions. The binodal surface is also addressed.

Abstract:The liquid–gas phase transition in hot neutron-rich nuclear matter is investigated within a self-consistent thermal model using an isospin and momentum dependent interaction (MDI) constrained by the isospin diffusion data in heavy-ion collisions, a momentum-independent interaction (MID), and an isoscalar momentum-dependent interaction (eMDYI). The boundary of the phase-coexistence region is shown to be sensitive to the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy with a softer symmetry energy giving a higher critical pressure and a larger area of phase-coexistence region. Compared with the momentum-independent MID interaction, the isospin and momentum-dependent MDI interaction is found to increase the critical pressure and enlarge the area of phase-coexistence region. For the isoscalar momentum-dependent eMDYI interaction, a limiting pressure above which the liquid–gas phase transition cannot take place has been found and it is shown to be sensitive to the stiffness of the symmetry energy.

Abstract:The phenomenon of nuclear liquid-gas phase transition is a topic of contemporary interest. In heavy-ion collisions, there is no direct way of accessing the thermodynamic variables like pressure, density, free energy, entropy etc., and unambiguous detection of phase transition becomes difficult. A peak in the first order derivative of total multiplicity with respect to temperature (commonly abbreviated as the multiplicity derivative) has been established as a new experimentally accessible signature of the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition. In this work, the effect of isospin asymmetry in the fragmenting system, as well as the nuclear equation of state, on the multiplicity derivative and specific heat at constant volume is investigated within the framework of the Canonical Thermodynamical Model (CTM) with a semi-microscopic cluster functional.

The relative yields of decay modes of the projectile remnant are also analyzed and compared with the experimental ones.
