Abstract:Under an Ansatz of density dependence of NNrho coupling, the phase transition of hot nuclear matter for Furnstahl, Serot and Tang's model is investigated. Abstract:In a study of the liquid–gas phase transition in warm asymmetric nuclear matter by means of the FST model, a density-dependent nucleon–nucleon–ρ-meson (NNρ) coupling is introduced. It is found that the density dependence of the effective (NNρ) coupling makes the phase transition more complicated than the constant coupling case which is usually assumed. The section of the binodal surface at a fixed temperature may be cut off at a pressure limit plim, above which there is no two-phase coexistence. A second-order phase transition taking place in asymmetric nuclear matter below its pressure limit changes to a first-order transition at the pressure limit.

Abstract:By means of the Furnstahl, Serot and Tang's model, the effects of surface tension and Coulomb interaction on the liquid–gas phase transition for finite nuclei are investigated. A limit pressure plim above which the liquid–gas phase transition cannot take place has been found. It is found that comparing to the Coulomb interaction, the contribution of surface tension is dominate in low temperature regions. The binodal surface is also addressed.

Abstract:We study an effective relativistic mean-field model of nuclear matter with arbitrary proton fraction at finite temperature in the framework of nonextensive statistical mechanics, characterized by power-law quantum distributions. We investigate the presence of thermodynamic instability in a warm and asymmetric nuclear medium and study the consequent nuclear liquid-gas phase transition by requiring the Gibbs conditions on the global conservation of baryon number and electric charge fraction. We show that nonextensive statistical effects play a crucial role in the equation of state and in the formation of mixed phase also for small deviations from the standard Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics.

Abstract:Based on the difference between the Fermi distributions at zero temperature and at the finite temperature, we introduce the temperature-dependent three-body force (TBF) into the microscopic finite-temperature Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory (FTBHF). In terms of the meson-exchange current approach, i.e. the one boson exchange (OBE) approximation, the exchange of four important mesons pi, rho, sigma and omega are considered. Using the FTBHF theory including TBF, we describe the critical temperature of the liquid-gas phase transition for symmetric nuclear matter and discuss its change trend with the increasing asymmetry parameter. Compared to the result excluding TBF, the value of the critical temperature turns out to be smaller.

Abstract:The nuclear liquid-gas transition from a gas of hadrons to a nuclear phase cannot be determined numerically from conventional lattice QCD due to the severe sign problem at large values of the baryon chemical potential. In the strong coupling regime of lattice QCD with staggered quarks, the dual formulation is suitable to address the nuclear liquid gas transition. We determine this first order transition at low temperatures and as a function of the quark mass and the inverse gauge coupling $\beta$. We also determine the baryon mass and discuss the nuclear interactions as a function of the quark mass, and compare to mean field results.

Abstract:First order phase transitions (PTs) with more than one globally conserved charge, so-called non-congruent PTs, have characteristic differences compared to congruent PTs (e.g., dimensionality of phase diagrams, location and properties of critical points and endpoints). In the present article we investigate the non-congruence of the nuclear liquid-gas PT at sub-saturation densities and the deconfinement PT at high densities and/or temperatures in Coulomb-less models, relevant for heavy-ion collisions and neutron stars. For the first PT, we use the FSUgold relativistic mean-field model and for the second one the relativistic chiral SU(3) model. The chiral SU(3) model is one of the few models for the deconfinement PT, which contains quarks and hadrons in arbitrary proportions (i.e. a "solution") and gives a continuous transition from pure hadronic to pure quark matter above a critical point. The study shows the universality of the applied concept of non-congruence for the two PTs with an upper critical point, and illustrates the different typical scales involved. In addition, we find a principle difference between the liquid-gas and the deconfinement PTs: in contrast to the ordinary Van-der-Waals-like PT, the phase coexistence line of the deconfinement PT has a negative slope in the pressure-temperature plane. As another qualitative difference we find that the non-congruent features of the deconfinement PT become vanishingly small around the critical point.

Abstract:A two-components isospin lattice gas model has been employed to study the liquid-gas phase transition for asymmetric nuclear matter. An additional degree of freedom, namely, the asymmetry parameter alpha has been considered carefully for studying the phase transition. We have shown that under the mean field approximation, the liquid-gas phase transition given by this model is of second order. The entropy continues at the phase transition point. The binodal surface is addressed.

Abstract:We study the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition on the basis of a two-component lattice gas model. A Metropolis type of sampling method is used to generate microscopic states in the canonical ensemble. The effective equation of state and fragment mass distributions are evaluated in a wide range of temperatures and densities. A definition of the phase coexistence region appropriate for mesoscopic systems is proposed. The caloric curve resulting from different types of freeze-out conditions are presented.

Abstract:We estimate the nuclear saturation density and the binding energy in a nuclear liquid from precision data on the coupling of the four-quark scattering vertex in the vector channel, computed within functional QCD. We show that this coupling is directly related to the density-density potential and the latter is used for the estimates. In a first qualitative computation we find a saturation density of 0.2 fm${}^{-3}$ and an upper bound for the binding energy of 21.5 MeV, in agreement with the empirical values of 0.16 fm${}^{-3}$ and 16 MeV, respectively. We also use the scattering vertex for constructing an emergent low-energy effective theory for the liquid gas transition from QCD correlation function, whose coupling parameters can be determined within QCD. As a first consistency check of this construction we estimate the in-medium reduction of the nucleon pole mass.

Abstract:Within a relaxation time approach using free nucleon-nucleon cross sections modified by the in-medium nucleon masses that are determined from an isospin- and momentum-dependent effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, we investigate the specific shear viscosity ($\eta/s$) of neutron-rich nucleonic matter near its liquid-gas phase transition. It is found that as the nucleonic matter is heated at fixed pressure or compressed at fixed temperature, its specific shear viscosity shows a valley shape in the temperature or density dependence, with the minimum located at the boundary of the phase transition. Moreover, the value of $\eta/s$ drops suddenly at the first-order liquid-gas phase transition temperature, reaching as low as $4\sim5$ times the KSS bound of $\hbar/4\pi$. However, it varies smoothly for the second-order liquid-gas phase transition. Effects of the isospin degree of freedom and the nuclear symmetry energy on the value of $\eta/s$ are also discussed.

Abstract:Based on the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics model, finite-size scaling effects on nuclear liquid-gas phase transition probes are investigated by studying the de-excitation processes of six thermal sources of different sizes with the same initial density and similar N/Z. Using several probes including the total multiplicity derivative (dM(tot)/dT), second moment parameter (M-2), intermediate mass fragment (IMF) multiplicity (N-IMF), Fisher's power-law exponent (tau), and Ma's nuclear Zipf's law exponent (xi), the relationship between the phase transition temperature and the source size has been established. It is observed that the phase transition temperatures obtained from the IMF multiplicity, Fisher's exponent, and Ma's nuclear Zipf's law exponent have a strong correlation with the source size. Moreover, by employing the finite-size scaling law, the critical temperature T-c and the critical exponent nu were obtained for infinite nuclear matter.

Abstract:At high density, matter is expected to undergo a phase transition to deconfined quark matter. Although the density at which it happens and the strength of the transition are still largely unknown, we can model it to be in agreement with known experimental data and reliable theoretical results. We discuss how deconfinement in dense matter can be affected by both by temperature and by strong magnetic fields within the CMF model. To explore different dependencies in our approach, we also explore how deconfinement can be affected by the assumption of different degrees of freedom, different vector coupling terms, and different deconfining potentials, all at zero temperature. Both zero-net-strangeness and isospin-symmetric heavy-ion collision matter and beta-equilibrated charge-neutral matter in neutron stars are discussed.

Abstract:By using the improved Zimanyi–Moszkowski (ZM) model including the freedom of nucleons, σ mesons, ω mesons and ρ mesons, we investigate the liquid–gas phase transition for asymmetric nuclear matter. It is found that the phase transition for asymmetric nuclear matter in the improved ZM model with the isospin vector ρ meson degree of freedom is well defined. The binodal surface, which is essential in the study of the phase transition process, is addressed.

Abstract:An extended quark mass density- and temperature- dependent model which includes the couplings between quarks and the sigma-mesons, omega-mesons is suggested. The MIT bag boundary constrain has been given up and the interactions between quarks and mesons are extended to the whole free space. We show that the present model is successful to describe both the saturation properties and the deconfinement phase transition of nuclear matter. When the effective nucleon masses vanish and the bag radius tends to infinite, the quark deconfinement takes place. The corresponding QGP phase diagram is addressed.

Abstract:The two-Equation of State (EoS) model is used to describe the hadron-quark phase transition in asymmetric matter formed at high density in heavy-ion collisions. For the quark phase, the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) effective theory is used to investigate the influence of dynamical quark mass effects on the phase transition. At variance to the MIT-Bag results, with fixed current quark masses, the main important effect of the chiral dynamics is the appearance of an end point for the coexistence zone. We show that a first order hadron-quark phase transition may take place in the region T- (50 - 80) MeV and rho B - (2 - 4) rho 0, which is possible to be probed in the new planned facilities, such as FAIR at GSI-Darmstadt and NICA at JINR-Dubna. From isospin properties of the mixed phase some possible signals are suggested. The importance of chiral symmetry and dynamical quark mass on the hadron-quark phase transition is stressed.

Abstract:We study numerically the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD with one flavor of massless staggered quarks. We determine the complete phase diagram as a function of temperature and chemical potential, including a tricritical point. We clarify the nature of the low temperature dense phase, which is strongly bound nuclear matter. This strong binding is explained by the nuclear potential, which we measure. Finally, we determine, from this first-principle limiting case of QCD, the masses of atomic nuclei up to A=12 "carbon".
