Abstract:The pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an ingenious way to synthesize carbon-based materials with unique morphology for various applications including electrocatalysis. In this work, we reported a facile morphology regulation strategy for the synthesis of a spherical superstructure of MOF nanosheets. The use of metal hydroxide nanosheets on Zn particles as precursors/templates allowed MOFs with general polyhedron shape to form nanosheets and assemble into a spherical superstructure in the ligand solution. Further, a hollow spherical superstructure of carbon nanosheets decorated with metal-based nanoparticles was fabricated through the pyrolysis of MOF nanosheet superstructures at 950 °C, where the substrate/template Zn particle cores were evaporated away. The obtained composites possess carbon-based superstructures with abundant mesopores and metal-based nanoparticles with rich alloy/oxide interfaces. These features endow this MOF-derived carbon-based material with outstanding bifunctional activity for oxygen reduction/evolution reactions and great performances in Zn-air batteries.

Porous Nanosheet Composite with Multi-Type Active Centers As an Efficient and Stable Oxygen Electrocatalyst in Alkaline and Acid Conditions

Abstract:The reversible oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are proton-coupled/decoupled four-electron reactions requiring multi-type active centers for catalysis. Herein, porous nanosheets codoped with a carbon-encapsulated FeNi alloy, metal-N species, and N defects (FeNi-N/PCN) were synthesized through a facile and environmentally friendly molten NaCl template method. The obtained FeNi-N/PCN achieved impressive performances as an oxygen electrocatalyst for the ORR and OER in alkaline (E1/2 of 0.88 VRHE, Ej=10 of 1.57 VRHE) and acidic electrolytes (E1/2 of 0.78 VRHE, Ej=10 of 1.76 VRHE). Furthermore, this FeNi-N/PCN catalyst achieved an impressive power density of 224 mW cm−2 and a specific capacity of 691 mA h g−1 in a Zn-air battery, which are 1.34- and 1.20-fold higher than that of the Pt and RuO2 catalysts, respectively. These outstanding performances are due to the layered carbon nanosheet with multi-type active sites, including a carbon-encapsulated FeNi alloy, N defects, and metal-N sites (M-Nx).
Porous N-Doped Carbon-Encapsulated CoNi Alloy Nanoparticles Derived from MOFs As Efficient Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysts.

Abstract:A porous N-doped carbon-encapsulated CoNi alloy nanoparticle composite (CoNi@N-C) was prepared using a bimetallic metal-organic framework composite as the precursor. The optimal prepared Co1Ni1@N-C material at 800 °C exhibited well-defined porosities, uniform CoNi alloy nanoparticle dispersion, a high doped-N level, and scattered CoNi-N x active sites, therefore affording excellent oxygen catalytic activities toward the reduction and evolution processes of oxygen. The oxygen reduction (ORR) onset potential ( Eonset) on Co1Ni1@N-C was 0.91 V and the half-wave potential ( E1/2) was 0.82 V, very close to the parameters recorded on the Pt/C (20 wt Pt%) benchmark. Moreover, it is worth noting that the ORR stability of Co1Ni1@N-C was prominently higher than that of Pt/C. Under the oxygen evolution reaction condition, Co1Ni1@N-C generated the maximum current density at the potential of 1.7 V (8.60 mA cm-2) and the earliest Eonset (1.35 V) among all Co xNi y@N-C hybrids. The Co1Ni1@N-C catalyst exhibited the smallest Δ E value, confirming the superior bifunctional activity. The high surface area and porosity, and CoNi-N x active sites on the carbon surface including the proper interactions between the N-doped C shell and CoNi nanoparticles were attributed as the main contributors to the outstanding oxygen electrocatalytic property and good stability.

Abstract:Hetero-nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon show promising potential application in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, a covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) based composite with FeN species and Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles embedded in N-doped carbon nanosheets (Fe/Fe3C@FeN-Cs) has been successfully synthesized by an in-situ reduction of pre-designed Fe-N-2-O-2 units. Benefit from the compositional and structural synergistic effect, the optimized Fe/Fe3C@FeN-C-900 displays excellent ORR activity in both acidic (E-1/2 = 0.77 V) and alkaline (E-1/2 = 0.88 V) electrolytes, which are comparable and even superior to the benchmark Pt/C. Impressively, the maximum power density of fuel cell using Fe/Fe3C@FeN-C-900 as cathode catalyst reaches 408 mW cm(-2). Moreover, the Fe/Fe3C@FeN-C-900-drived rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) deliver a higher power density (156.8 mW cm(-2)), larger specific capacity (775 mA h g(-1)) and better cycling stability (270 cycles) as compared with the state-of-the-art Pt/C counterpart. The interfacial electron transfer between Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles and neighboring FeN species, as well as the porous carbon architecture contribute to the excellent ORR performance of Fe/Fe3C@FeN-C-900, resulting in the easily adsorption/activation of O-2 and accelerated ORR kinetics because of the fast mass transfer. The COF-derived synthetic strategy inspires new perspectives to develop hetero-nanoparticle composites as high-efficiency ORR electrocatalysts for the economical-practical energy conversion devices.

Abstract:Designing and synthesizing nanomaterials with high coverages of active sites is one of the most-pivotal factors in the construction of state-of-the-art electrocatalysts with high performance. Herein, we proposed a facile in situ templated method for the fabrication of oxygen-species-modified nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (O-N-CNs). The epoxy oxygen and ketene oxygen combined with graphitic-nitrogen defects in O-N-CNs gave more active sites for the oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER), as proven via theoretical and experimental results, while the carbonyl-oxygen and epoxy-oxygen species showed more efficient electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Hence, the O-N-CNs showed highly active electrocatalytic performance toward ORR, OER, and HER. More importantly, the superior multifunctional electrocatalytic activity of O-N-CNs allowed their use in the construction of Zn-air batteries to power the corresponding water-splitting cells. This work can offer an understanding of underlying mechanisms of oxygen species on N-doped carbon materials toward multiple electrocatalysis and facilitate the engineering of electrocatalysts for energy-storage and -conversion devices.
Deep-Breathing Honeycomb-like Co-Nx-C Nanopolyhedron Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysts for Rechargeable Zn-Air Batteries

Abstract:Metal organic framework (MOF) derivatives have been extensively used as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts. However, the utilization of active sites is still not satisfactory owing to the sluggish mass transport within their narrow pore channels. Herein, interconnected macroporous channels were constructed inside MOFs-derived Co-Nx-C electrocatalyst to unblock the mass transfer barrier. The as-synthesized electrocatalyst exhibits a honeycomb-like morphology with highly exposed Co-Nx-C active sites on carbon frame. Owing to the interconnected ordered macropores throughout the electrocatalyst, these active sites can smoothly "exhale/inhale" reactants and products, enhancing the accessibility of active sites and the reaction kinetics. As a result, the honeycomb-like Co-Nx-C displayed a potential difference of 0.773 V between the oxygen evolution reaction potential at 10 mA cm-2 and the oxygen reduction reaction half-wave potential, much lower than that of bulk-Co-Nx-C (0.842 V). The rational modification on porosity makes such honeycomb-like MOF derivative an excellent bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst in rechargeable Zn-air batteries.

Abstract:Directly pyrolyzing organometal complex represents a judicious strategy to fabricate efficient multifunctional carbon-based electrocatalysts, but the structure/composition of the catalysts is commonly complicated and the corresponding electrocatalytic activities are usually compromised. In this study, we report a selective leaching route to prepare small Co9S8 nanoparticles supported on nitrogen, sulfur codoped porous carbon nanosheets (Co9S8@PNSC) by pyrolyzing sheet-like Co(II)-coordinated thiourea-ethylenediamine-formaldehyde resin (Co-TEFR)/polydopamine (PDA) hybrids that are covered by silica shell layer, followed by removal of the silica and Co nanoparticles with NH4HF2 through a wet etching method. Consequently, the resultant Co9S8@PNSC exhibits high specific surface area, hierarchical porosity and tiny Co9S8 nanoparticles, which are conducive to the maximal utilization of active sites, endowing remarkable oxygen electrocatalysis with a half-wave potential of +0.845 V for oxygen reduction reaction and a low overpotential of 314 mV at current density of 10 mA cm−2 for oxygen evolution reaction. Besides, such composite also shows a considerable electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen generation. When applied in an assembled zinc-air battery, Co9S8@PNSC displays a high power-density (203 mW cm−2) and favorable cycling lifespan. The results from the present strategy may provide an exemplification in rational design and fabrication of carbon-based nanocomposite for high-performance multifunctional electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Porous carbon materials with nitrogen-coordinated transition metal active sites have been widely regarded as appealing alternatives to replace noble metal catalysts in oxygen-based electrochemical reaction activities. However, improving the electrocatalytic activity of transition-metal-based catalysts remains a challenge for widespread application in renewable devices. Herein, we use a simple one-step pyrolysis method to construct a Co nanoparticles/Co-Nx-decorated carbon framework catalyst with a near-total external surface structure and uniform dispersion nanoparticles, which displays promising catalytic activity and superior stability for oxygen reduction reactions in both alkaline and neutral electrolytes, as evidenced by the positive shift of half-wave potential by 44 and 11 mV compared to 20% Pt/C. Excellent electrochemical performance originates from highly accessible Co nanoparticles/Co-Nx active sites at the external surface structure (this is, exposing active sites). The thus-assembled liquid zinc-air battery using the synthesized electrocatalyst as the cathode material delivers a maximum power density of 178 mW cm-2 with an open circuit potential of 1.48 V and long-term discharge stability over 150 h.

Abstract:Developing noble metal-free bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts is vital for metal-air batteries. Herein, we present a facile approach to fabricating N-doped carbon nanosheet networks with metal nanoparticles (M/N-CNSNs) readily converted from metal-organic frameworks. The resultant Co/N-CNSNs show superior bifunctional oxygen catalytic activity attributed to the efficient active sites and fast mass diffusion enabled by the nanosheet structure. It is worth noting that the first-principles studies prove the Co/N-C sites to be the oxygen reduction reaction active sites, where the most favorable ones are the carbon atoms next to Co-coordinated pyridinic N. Interestingly, the cobalt content plays an important role in Co/N-C sites but was not directly involved in the catalytic process. In a Zn-air battery, a small voltage gap without obvious voltage loss is found for the Co/N-CNSNs. This facile approach enables scalable synthesis, representing an essential step toward the popularization of metal-air batteries.

Abstract:Developing transition metal oxides (TMOs) electrocatalysts with high bifunctional activity is of significance for reversible fuel cells and rechargeable metal air batteries. Herein, we report a bifunctional nitrogen doped NiCoOx nanosheet array, which can stably catalyze oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The nanosheet has ultrathin thickness of 1-3 nm and mesoporous structure, which are favorable for exposing active sites. Moreover, the nanosheet has pronounced crystalline distortions as unraveled by means of X-ray absorption fine structure. The distortions yield abundant catalytically active defects (e. g. oxygen vacancies), thereby giving rise to enhanced electrocatalytic performance. The nanosheet array exhibits an ultra-small overpotential of only 239 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for OER and a low overpotential of 382 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for ORR, which places as one of the most active bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts. The assembled Zn air battery shows excellent cycling stability over 200h during consecutive charge (OER) and discharge (ORR) processes.

Abstract:Rational design of efficient non‐precious materials for oxygen redox electrocatalysis is currently a critical obstacle for rechargeable zinc‐air batteries. Herein, this work presents a strategy to modulate the activity and mass transfer performance for advanced bifunctional electrocatalysts. This is achieved via a prior vacuum heat treatment‐assisted pyrolysis approach, obtaining atomically disperse Fe/Co sites and alloy nanoparticle composites rooted in the unique well‐aligned nanotubes hierarchical architecture. The design of multiple metal active species and hierarchically porous structure facilitates the bifunctional activity and accessibility of the active sites, respectively, which affords the catalyst enhanced performance in rechargeable zinc‐air batteries, outperforming the commercial Pt/C‐Ir/C benchmarks. This work provides a new avenue to improve activity and accessibility together with single atomic catalysts as advanced bifunctional air cathodes for efficient oxygen redox electrocatalysis. An advanced bifunctional catalyst is presented as an efficient air cathode for rechargeable zinc‐air batteries. In its structure, Fe/Co dual‐atom and nanoparticle composite sites are decorated on a unique nanotube‐assembled‐sphere type hierarchical porous N‐doped carbon support to simultaneously boost the activity and mass transfer performance of the electrocatalytic oxygen redox process.

Electrochemical results reveal that the electrocatalyst prepared by pyrolysis at 1000 °C (CoNC-CNF-1000) exhibits excellent catalytic activity toward ORR that favors the four-electron ORR process and outstanding long-term stability with 86% current retention after 40 000 s. Meanwhile, it also shows superior electrocatalytic activity toward OER, reaching a lower potential of 1.68 V at 10 mA cm-2 and a potential gap of 0.88 V between the OER potential (at 10 mA cm-2 ) and the ORR half-wave potential. The ORR and OER performance of CoNC-CNF-1000 have outperformed commercial Pt/C and most nonprecious-metal catalysts reported to date. The remarkable ORR and OER catalytic performance can be mainly attributable to the unique 1D structure, such as higher graphitization degree beneficial for electronic mobility, hierarchical porosity facilitating the mass transport, and highly dispersed CoNx C active sites functionalized carbon framework. This strategy will shed light on the development of other MOF-based carbon nanofibers for energy storage and electrochemical devices.
