Abstract:The effectiveness of the non-linear energy sink (NES) for the seismic mitigation of slender and broad storage liquid tanks is investigated. The NES system is used as a supplemental energy dissipation device. It is composed of two springs (non-linear and linear), and two dashpots connected to a mass. The degree-of-freedom (DOF) approach is used to model the dynamic response of the tank. The nonstationary random approach is employed to simulate artificial seismic events. In the present study, two types of configurations of cylindrical tanks (broad and slender) for the storage of liquids are taken into consideration. The impact of the control mechanism in reducing the undesired vibration of a storage tank to an acceptable level is theoretically examined through the root-mean-square (RMS) values. A comparative study of the dynamic response between a NES and a linear tuned mass damper (TMD) is carried out to evaluate the performance of the NES absorber in vibration reduction. Based on the obtained results, it is found that the use of appropriate intrinsic parameters of both absorbers improves the convective, impulsive and rigid displacements, but the NES is more suitable and quite effective for controlling impulsive acceleration because of its ability to absorb broadband energy. The presence of this control device is very beneficial to the mechanical system. It is observed that the average reduction percentage in response to base shearing force, overturning moment and sloshing height of both liquid storage tanks is around 60%.
