Abstract:Skin-interfaced electrochemical sensing devices are widely developed for biochemical sensing at molecular levels. However, the sensing electrodes fabricated with photolithography or printing technique are hard to achieve high stretchability without special designs like serpentine shape. Also, most of them require wired connections with external electrochemical workstations for data acquisition or on-board batteries to power the circuits, which largely restrain the flexibility, simplification, and miniaturization of the devices. Here, a battery-free, wireless, and epidermal electrochemical system is presented for in situ biochemical sensing. The sensing component of the system is a stretchable electrode array all-printed with soft polymer and conductive silver nanowires. The electrodes show stable electrical properties within strain range of 0-50%, without serpentine designs. The electronic component of the system is a fully integrated flexible circuit board with near field communication module, which enables wireless energy harvesting and data transmission with smartphones. The system demonstrates good performance in real-time on-body sweat analysis for simultaneous quantitative detections of glucose, hydrogen, sodium, and potassium. This battery-free and wireless epidermal electrochemical system provides a simplified, miniaturized, and flexible solution for a wide range of biochemical platforms, including wearable and implanted bioelectronics.

Abstract:Capabilities in health monitoring enabled by capture and quantitative chemical analysis of sweat could complement, or potentially obviate the need for, approaches based on sporadic assessment of blood samples. Established sweat monitoring technologies use simple fabric swatches and are limited to basic analysis in controlled laboratory or hospital settings. We present a collection of materials and device designs for soft, flexible, and stretchable microfluidic systems, including embodiments that integrate wireless communication electronics, which can intimately and robustly bond to the surface of the skin without chemical and mechanical irritation. This integration defines access points for a small set of sweat glands such that perspiration spontaneously initiates routing of sweat through a microfluidic network and set of reservoirs. Embedded chemical analyses respond in colorimetric fashion to markers such as chloride and hydronium ions, glucose, and lactate. Wireless interfaces to digital image capture hardware serve as a means for quantitation. Human studies demonstrated the functionality of this microfluidic device during fitness cycling in a controlled environment and during long-distance bicycle racing in arid, outdoor conditions. The results include quantitative values for sweat rate, total sweat loss, pH, and concentration of chloride and lactate.

Abstract:Abstract Thin, soft, and skin-integrated electronic system has great advantages for realizing continuous human healthcare monitoring. Here, we report an ultra-thin, flexible, and garment-based microelectronics powered by sweat-activated batteries (SABs) and applications of powering biosensors and microelectronic systems for real time sweat monitoring. The SAB cell is ultra-thin (1.25 mm) with excellent biocompatibility. The SAB has good electricity output with high capacity (14.33 mAh) and maximum power density (3.17 mW cm −2 ) after being activated by the sweat volume of 0.045 mL cm −2 , which could continuously power 120 light emitting diodes over 3 h. The outputs could maintain stable after repeatable bending. Wireless microelectronics system could be continuously powered by the SABs for 3 h to monitor sweat and physiological information, including sweat Na + concentration, pH, and skin impedance. The reported integrated system provides a potential for solving the power issues of flexible wearable electronics and realizing personalized medicine.

Abstract:Sweat could be a carrier of informative biomarkers for health status identification;therefore,wearable sweat sensors have attracted significant attention for research.An external power source is an important component of wearable sensors,however,the current power supplies,i.e.,batteries,limit further shrinking down the size of these devices and thus limit their application areas and scenarios.Herein,we report a stretchable self-powered biosensor with epidermal electronic format that enables the in situ detec-tion of lactate and glucose concentration in sweat.Enzymatic biofuel cells serve as self-powered sensing modules allowing the sweat sensor to exhibit a determination coefficient (R2) of 0.98 with a sensitivity of 2.48 mV/mM for lactate detection,and R2 of 0.96 with a sensitivity of 0.11 mV/μM for glucose detection.The microfluidic channels developed in an ultra-thin soft flexible polydimethylsiloxane layer not only enable the effective collection of sweat,but also provide excellent mechanical properties with stable performance output even under 30％ stretching.The presented soft sweat sensors can be integrated at nearly any location of the body for the continuous monitoring of lactate and glucose changes during normal daily activities such as exercise.Our results provide a promising approach to develop next-generation sweat sensors for real-time and in situ sweat analysis.

Abstract:Abstract Wearable sweat sensors can detect and monitor various substances in sweat, providing valuable information for healthcare monitoring and clinical diagnostics. Recent advances in flexible electronic technologies have enabled the development of wearable sweat sensors that can measure sweat rate and biochemical substances in real time, although several challenges remain, such as power management and sweat extraction issues. Here, a passive sweat extraction strategy as well as a self‐powered monitoring system (SEMS) is reported to be designed for sedentary individuals, i.e., elders. The SEMS system comprises a wearable triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) for sweat extraction, a sweat‐activated battery (SAB) as the integrated power source, carbachol‐loaded iontophoresis electrodes for sweat extraction, microfluidics with biosensors for detecting physiological information in sweat, and near field communication (NFC)‐based wireless microelectronics for data communication, processing, and collection. By tapping the TENG, sedentary people can passively extract sweat based on the iontophoresis process, allowing the sensors to detect biological information in sweat. The good flexibility of the SEMS device enables real‐time and non‐invasive detection of sweat analytes in a wearable format. This system offers a new strategy of sweat collection and analysis for the elderly group, and therefore can help to understand human physiology and personalize health monitoring deeply.

Abstract:A fully self‐powered wearable sweat analysis system is constructed, which harvests human kinetic energy via hybrid nanogenerators, performs selective in situ monitoring of biomarkers (Na+ and K+), and wirelessly transmits the sensing data to a user interface via Bluetooth. This work provides a promising strategy for advancing self‐powered wearable electronics and multifunctional health monitoring platforms. Wireless wearable sweat analysis devices can monitor biomarkers at the molecular level continuously and in situ, which is highly desired for personalized health care. The miniaturization, integration, and wireless operation of sweat sensors improve the comfort and convenience while also bringing forward new challenges for power supply technology. Herein, a wireless self‐powered wearable sweat analysis system (SWSAS) is designed that effectively converts the mechanical energy of human motion into electricity through hybrid nanogenerator modules (HNGMs). The HNGM shows stable output characteristics at low frequency with a current of 15 mA and a voltage of 60 V. Through real‐time on‐body sweat analysis powered by HNGM, the SWSAS is demonstrated to selectively monitor biomarkers (Na+ and K+) in sweat and wirelessly transmit the sensing data to the user interface via Bluetooth.

Abstract:Power generation from human sweat has attracted great attention due to its potential application in waste energy scavenging. However, the development of methods to generate sufficient electricity from sweat to power electronic devices for health monitoring remains a major challenge. Here, we report a wearable sweat-based electricity generator (SEG), in which the power generation mechanism is based on the redox reaction between sweat and electrodes. Due to the increase in oxygen adsorption, both the output current and power of SEG with single-walled carbon nanotubes modified electrode can be remarkably enhanced by 5.6 and 14.7 times compared to SEG with a nanotube-free electrode, respectively. The SEGs have been first utilized to power a wireless heart-rate sensor for sustainably transmitting heart-rate data to a smart phone. Abstract:Sweat is an important biofluid with rich physiological information that can evaluate human health condition. Wearable sweat sensors have received widespread attention in recent years due to the benefits of non-invasive, continuous, and real-time monitoring. Currently, an efficient device integrating sweat collection and detection is still needed. Here, a wearable sweat microfluidic system was fabricated for real-time collection and analysis of sweat. The fabricated microfluidic system consisted of four layers, including a skin adhesive layer, a microfluidic layer, an electrode layer, and a capping layer. The sweat collection rate was around 0.79 μL/min, which demonstrated efficient sweat sampling, storage, and refreshing capabilities. Simultaneous detection of multiple sweat biomarkers was achieved with a screen-printed sweat sensing array, which could realize high-precision detection of Na + , K + , and glucose. Moreover, the sensing array also showed good repeatability and stability, with a relative standard deviation of sensitivity of less than 5%. Additionally, human testing was conducted to demonstrate that this microfluidic system can continuously monitor Na + , K + , and glucose in subjects' sweat during exercise, which showed high potential for non-invasive human health monitoring.

Abstract:Flexible and wearable electronics have presented a wide range of advantages to non-invasive real-time human health monitoring. However, its remarkable energy consumption during continuous and long-time operation brings essential, practical challenges, which lead to growing recognition of exploring new and efficient energy strategies for wearables. Here, inspired by human joints as a biomechanical energy source that shows an ideal option for sustainable powers, we design a battery-free sweat sensing system integrated with sweat resistant self-sustainable energy supply and wireless communication interface, where piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) efficiently converting biomechanical energy from freely movable joints (finger, cubital fossa and popliteal space) into electricity serving as the self-powering module. Physiological relevant parameters in sweat, including Na+ , K+ and pH, are sensed and wirelessly transmitted to the user interface via Bluetooth communication. This system shows a paradigm of wearable electronics driven by human joints that demonstrated efficient self-sustainable energy supply and multiplexed physiological detection.

Abstract:Wearable sweat sensors have received considerable attention due to their great potential for noninvasive continuous monitoring of an individual's health status applications. However, the low secretion rate and fast evaporation of sweat pose challenges in collecting sweat from sedentary individuals for noninvasive analysis of body physiology. Here, we demonstrate wearable textiles for continuous monitoring of sweat at rest using the combination of a heating element and a microfluidic channel to increase localized skin sweat secretion rates and combat sweat evaporation, enabling accurate and stable monitoring of trace amounts of sweat. The Janus sensing yarns with a glucose sensing sensitivity of 36.57 mA cm-2 mM-1 are embroidered into the superhydrophobic heated textile to collect sweat directionally, resulting in improved sweat collection efficiency of up to 96 and 75% retention. The device also maintains a highly durable sensing performance, even in dynamic deformation, recycling, and washing. The microfluidic sensing textile can be further designed into a wireless sensing system that enables sedentary-compatible sweat analysis for the continuous, real-time monitoring of body glucose levels at rest.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel self-powered, microfluidic sweat sensing system. The device features a flexible thermoelectric system that enables efficient on-demand sweat extraction and data transmission. Both the thermoelectric generator (TEG) and the microfluidic system are thoroughly evaluated through numerical simulations and experimental testing. The device integrates electrochemical sensors for glucose, pH, and ion detection, along with solid-liquid triboelectric nanosensors to measure sweat rate. It demonstrates high selectivity for target analytes. Sweat, extracted via iontophoresis with carbagel, interacts with electrodes coated with ion-selective membranes (ISM) and glucose oxidase, producing an open-circuit potential. This selective detection of analytes results in distinct output differences. Additionally, the device delivers stable results within 20 minutes, reducing analysis time while maintaining a strong correlation with blood biomarker concentrations. This partially flexible, noninvasive system has potential applications in monitoring electrolyte loss and glucose imbalances through sweat.

Abstract:Abstract We fabricated wearable perspiration analyzing sites for actively monitoring physiological status during exercises without any batteries or other power supply. The device mainly consists of ZnO nanowire (NW) arrays and flexible polydimethylsiloxane substrate. Sweat on the skin can flow into the flow channels of the device through capillary action and flow along the channels to ZnO NWs. The sweat flowing on the NWs (with lactate oxidase modification) can output a DC electrical signal, and the outputting voltage is dependent on the lactate concentration in the sweat as the biosensing signal. ZnO NWs generate electric double layer (EDL) in sweat, which causes a potential difference between the upper and lower ends (hydrovoltaic effect). The product of the enzymatic reaction can adjust the EDL and influence the output. This device can be integrated with wireless transmitter and may have potential application in constructing sports big data. This work promotes the development of next generation of biosensors and expands the scope of self-powered physiological monitoring system.

Abstract:An integrated wearable sweat detection system is introduced, featuring a unique bionic microfluidic chip for efficient sweat collection and real‐time electrochemical analysis. This system offers high‐precision measurements of key physiological indicators in fresh sweat, ensuring wearer comfort and versatile applications. Fresh sweat contains a diverse range of physiological indicators that can effectively reflect changes in the body. However, existing wearable sweat detection systems face challenges in efficiently collecting and detecting fresh sweat in real‐time. Additionally, they often lack the necessary deformation capabilities, resulting in discomfort for the wearer. Here, a fully elastic wearable electrochemical sweat detection system is developed that integrates a sweat‐collecting microfluidic chip, a multi‐parameter electrochemical sensor, a micro‐heater, and a sweat detection elastic circuit board system. The unique tree‐bionic structure of the microfluidic chip significantly enhances the efficiency of fresh sweat collection and discharge, enabling real‐time detection by the electrochemical sensors. The sweat multi‐parameter electrochemical sensor offers high‐precision and high‐sensitivity measurements of sodium ions, potassium ions, lactate, and glucose. The electronic system is built on an elastic circuit board that matches perfectly to wrinkled skin, ensuring improved wearing comfort and enabling multi‐channel data sampling, processing, and wireless transmission. This state‐of‐the‐art system represents a significant advancement in the field of elastic wearable sweat detection and holds promising potential for extending its capabilities to the detection of other sweat markers or various wearable applications.

Abstract:In the field of wearable sensing, small and precise sensors can greatly reduce the burden on the wearer and improve the sense of experience, which is the future direction of sensing development. Herein, we introduce an ultra-small wearable biosensor system that integrates an MS02 chip for real-time and highly accurate sweat detection. The whole system mainly includes flexible electrodes and a printed circle board (PCB). The size of the PCB is only 1.5 cm × 0.8 cm, which greatly minimizes the size of the sweat system and improves wearing comfort. Notably, this miniaturized system is comparable to a commercial electrochemical workstation, ensuring the reliability and accuracy of real-time analysis. The core processing MS02 chip, with a dimension of 1.2 mm × 1.1 mm, is used to perform electrochemical signal processing. By performing electrochemical characterization and measurements of the ultra-small wearable biosensor system, on-body monitoring of four biomarkers (glucose, lactate, Na+, and K+) in sweat of human volunteers has been successfully achieved. With the help of this electrochemical sensor system, mass of biochemical data from perspiration can be acquired to better understand the body's response to daily activities, which will facilitate the early prediction of abnormal physiological changes in the future.

Abstract:Wearable electronics have attracted extensive attentions over the past few years for their potential applications in health monitoring based on continuous data collection and real-time wireless transmission, which highlights the importance of portable powering technologies. Batteries are the most used power source for wearable electronics, but unfortunately, they consist of hazardous materials and are bulky, which limit their incorporation into the state-of-art skin-integrated electronics. Sweat-activated biocompatible batteries offer a new powering strategy for skin-like electronics. However, the capacity of the reported sweat-activated batteries (SABs) cannot support real-time data collection and wireless transmission. Focused on this issue, soft, biocompatible, SABs are developed that can be directly integrated on skin with a record high capacity of 42.5 mAh and power density of 7.46 mW cm-2 among the wearable sweat and body fluids activated batteries. The high performance SABs enable powering electronic devices for a long-term duration, for instance, continuously lighting 120 lighting emitting diodes (LEDs) for over 5 h, and also offers the capability of powering Bluetooth wireless operation for real-time recording of physiological signals for over 6 h. Demonstrations of the SABs for powering microfluidic system based sweat sensors are realized in this work, allowing real-time monitoring of pH, glucose, and Na+ in sweat.

Abstract:Wearable non-invasive biosensors for the continuous monitoring of metabolites in sweat can detect a few analytes at sufficiently high concentrations, typically during vigorous exercise so as to generate sufficient quantity of the biofluid. Here we report the design and performance of a wearable electrochemical biosensor for the continuous analysis, in sweat during physical exercise and at rest, of trace levels of multiple metabolites and nutrients, including all essential amino acids and vitamins. The biosensor consists of graphene electrodes that can be repeatedly regenerated in situ, functionalized with metabolite-specific antibody-like molecularly imprinted polymers and redox-active reporter nanoparticles, and integrated with modules for iontophoresis-based sweat induction, microfluidic sweat sampling, signal processing and calibration, and wireless communication. In volunteers, the biosensor enabled the real-time monitoring of the intake of amino acids and their levels during physical exercise, as well as the assessment of the risk of metabolic syndrome (by correlating amino acid levels in serum and sweat). The monitoring of metabolites for the early identification of abnormal health conditions could facilitate applications in precision nutrition.
