Effect of different polishing systems and drinks on the color stability of resin composite

Abstract:Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the color stability of resin composit using different finishing systems and drinks. Materials and methods: Composit disks (5 mm diameter, 2 mm thickness) were prepared for each nanofilled composite using a brass mold. The specimens were divided into 5 finishing system groups Mylar strip (Mylar, DuPont, Wilmington, Del., USA), Soft Lex (3M(™) ESPE(™) St. Paul, MN, USA), Enhance (Dentsply-DeTrey GmbHD Konstanz, Germany), Hiluster (KerrHawe, Bioggio, Switzerland), Opti Disc (KerrHawe, Bioggio, Switzerland) and each group was divided into 10 subgroups (n = 10) and stored for 24 hours at 37°C in different drinks water coffee, coffee with sugar, tea, tea with sugar, diet coke, coke, light sour cherry juice or sour cherry juice. Color of all specimens was measured before and after exposure with a spectrophotometer using CIE L*a*b* relative, and color changes (ΔE*) were then calculated. The data were analyzed with a twoway analysis of variance (ANOVA), and mean values were compared by the Tukey HSD test (p = 0.05). Results: For the drinks, the lowest ΔE* values were observed in the water and highest ΔE* values were observed in sour cherry juice. When drinks with and without sugar were compared, all groups with sugar demonstrated a higher color difference than without sugar. For the different finishing systems, Mylar strip group demonstrated significantly highest color change; Enhance groups demonstrated significantly lowest color change. Conclusion: Finishing treatments and storage solutions significantly affect the color stability of resin composite. The presence of sugar in drinks increased the color difference compared to drinks without composit. Clinical significance: Polishing techniques and drinking drinks with sugar may affect the color of esthetic restorations.

Evaluation of Enamel Volume Loss after Exposure to Energy Drinks

Abstract:Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the erosive potential of various commercial energy drinks (EDs), sports drinks (SDs), and sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) and to correlate quantitative changes in tooth enamel volume loss based on the pH and titratable acidity of the drinks. Methods: A flat plane on the facial surface of 36 human incisor teeth was created and embedded in sample holders using resin. After pre-scanning with a profilometer (Proscan 2000, Scantron, Ind Products Ltd., Taunton, UK), the six samples per group were immersed for 4 h into either Monster EnergyTM (ED), RockstarTM (ED), Red BullTM (ED), or 5-h EnergyTM (ED) and, for comparison with a sports drink, GatoradeTM (SD) and a sugar sweetened beverage, Coca-Cola® (SSB). After immersion and post-scanning, the quantitative volume loss of the tooth enamel of the 36 samples was calculated (Proscan 3D software V2.1.1.15B), and the pH and titratable acidity (TA) of each drink was determined. Results: All drinks tested caused enamel volume loss. The actual amount varied among the different drinks, from 0.39 mm3 for Red BullTM, up to 1.01 mm3 for GatoradeTM. The pH measurements differed for each drink, ranging from 2.6 to 3.7. There was a small reverse correlation of 0.326 between the pH of all drinks and volume loss. Among the energy drinks, titratable acidity was similar and there was only a weak correlation between TA and volume loss (0.319 at p = 0.53). Conclusions: Energy drinks, sugar sweetened beverages, and sport drinks all have the potential to cause enamel tooth surface loss resulting in demineralization. Therefore, the pH of a drink cannot be the sole determinant for choosing a less harmful commercial beverage.

Evaluation of nanohardness, elastic modulus, and surface roughness of fluoride-releasing tooth colored restorative materials

Abstract:Recently, interest in tooth-colored fluoride-releasing dental materials has increased. Although physical and mechanical properties such as surface hardness, elastic modulus and surface roughness of the restorative materials have been investigated, the effect of different immersion media on these properties is still controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nanohardness, elastic modulus and surface roughness of the fluoride release of tooth-colored restorative materials after immersion in acidic beverages. Prepared samples of three restorative materials (a highly viscous glass ionomer (EQUIA Forte; GC, Tokyo, Japan), a compomer (Dyract XP; Dentsply, Weybridge, UK), and a bioactive restorative material (Activa BioACTIVE; Pulpdent, MA, USA)) were randomly divided and immersed in distilled water, a cola and an orange juice for one week. The HYSITRON T1 950 TriboIndenter device (Hysitron, USA) with the Berkovich diamond indenter tip was used for all measurements. The nanohardness and elastic modulus of the samples were measured by applying a force of 6000 μN to five different points on the sample surface. Surface roughness measurements were evaluated on random samples by scanning five random 40 × 40 μm areas. The properties were measured at the initial and one week after immersion. The values of nanohardness, elastic modulus and surface roughness were tested for significant differences using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures (p < 0.05). Tukey's honest significant difference (HSD) test was used for multiple comparisons. AB (Activa BioACTIVE) had the highest initial mean values for nanohardness. After post-immersion, the highest mean value for elastic modulus was the initial AB value. The lowest mean value for roughness of 100.36 nm was obtained for the initial DX (Dyract XP) measurement. Acidic beverages had a negative effect on the nanohardness, elastic modulus and surface roughness of the restorative materials.

Abstract:Aim: To evaluate and compare the effect of fruit juice (orange) and cola drink (noncarbonated) on the surface texture of composite (3M ESPE Filtek Bulk Fill) and glass ionomer cement (GIC) (ChemFil Superior). Materials and methods: A total of eighty pellets each were prepared with composite (3M ESPE Filtek Bulk Fill) and GIC (ChemFil Superior) material using a brass mold with an inner diameter of 3 mm and a thickness of 3 mm according to the manufacturer's instructions. Around 10 pellets of each material were placed in airtight plastic containers. The baseline surface texture value was obtained by profilometer. An 8-day immersion regime was carried out according to Maupome et al. After the 8-day test period, pellets were reevaluated for surface texture final value. The values were statistically analyzed. Results: A statistically significant lower surface roughness of composite restorative material was observed when treated with high-concentration orange juice and medium-concentration. Conversely, a statistically significant lower surface roughness of GIC restorative material was observed when it was treated with the low-concentration group, high-concentration orange juice, and medium-concentration orange juice. Abstract:Porcelain has color-rendering and optical properties that simulate natural teeth; though these restorations are considered to be color stable, discoloration is one of the primary factors for failure of esthetic restorations. To evaluate the surface roughness and color stability of three different restorative materials when exposed to tobacco extract, cigarette smoke, and carbonated beverage. A total of 99 samples were fabricated, 33 samples in each restorative material. A total of 33 samples were subdivided such that 11 samples of the above-mentioned restorative materials were subjected to tobacco extract, the other 11 were exposed to cigarette smoke in an artificial chamber, and the remaining 11 were immersed in carbonated beverage for a period of 90 days with variant exposure times. The pretreatment values of 99 samples for color stability were recorded using spectrophotometer and those of degree of surface roughness were recorded using profilometer. Posttreatment values were recorded using the same instruments. The IPS e.max, zirconia disks when subjected to tobacco extract and cigarette smoke (p > 0.05) had no significant differences found for color stability and surface roughness. All three materials when exposed to carbonated beverages, statistically significant values were obtained (p < 0.001). Among the three different restorative materials used, Vita VMK Master exhibited the maximum change in value of surface roughness (0.035818 μm). Among the three irritants used, smoke and tobacco extract did not affect color or degree of surface roughness for three restorative materials. Carbonated beverages, on the contrary, exhibited significant differences in color stability as well as surface roughness when measured pre- and postexposure for all the three restorative materials. However, among the three materials, feldspathic porcelain exhibited superior change in color and surface roughness when measured postexposure to irritants. The effect of beverage temperature on the surface roughness, microhardness, and color stability of the monoshade composite resin: An in vitro study

Abstract:Objective: This study assessed the impact of beverage temperature on the surface roughness, microhardness, and color stability of monoshade composite resin. Materials and methods: A batch of 70 monoshade composite resin specimens manufactured by Charisma Diamond ONE (Kulzer, Hanau, Germany) was prepared. Initial readings for surface roughness, microhardness, and color were recorded. The specimens were then divided into seven groupings of ten each: Distilled water (control group), Nescafe coffee at 70 °C and 5 °C, Arabic coffee at 70 °C and 37 °C, and cola at 7 °C and 24 °C. These samples underwent 30-min daily immersion in their respective beverages for a duration of 30 days. Final measurements were then taken. A non-contact profilometer was used for measuring surface roughness, a Vickers microhardness machine from Contour GT-I (Bruker Nano GmbH, Berlin, Germany) for microhardness, and a Color-Eye 7000A Spectrophotometer (X-Rite, GretagMacbeth, Michigan USA) for color stability. Statistical analyses, including repeated measure ANOVA for microhardness, roughness, and color, were executed using SPSS version 23. Results: All beverages led to changes in composite color and properties. Notably, coffee at 70 °C resulted in significant discoloration of the composite resin surface (p < 0.0001). The beverage that most affected the surface hardness and roughness of the monoshade composite resin was cola at 7 °C (p = 0.008). Conclusion: The inherent chemicals in beverages, coupled with their temperatures, can influence the composite properties of resin, specifically surface discoloration, hardness, and roughness. Clinicians may, therefore, consider instructing patients about the potential negative effects of these beverages.
Effect of the Different Dietary Supplements on the Average Surface Roughness and Color Stability of Direct Restorative Materials Used in Pediatric Dentistry

Abstract:Increased surface roughness and discoloration of the direct restorative materials used in pediatric patients affect the longevity of restorations and impair children's oral health. Many factors can alter these properties. One of these factors is the intake of dietary supplements. It is crucial to predict the properties of restorative materials when exposed to dietary supplements to maintain the dental care of children. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effect of various syrup-formed dietary supplements on the average surface roughness and color stability of current restorative materials used in pediatric dentistry. Seven different restorative materials (conventional glass ionomer [Fuji IX GP], resin-modified glass ionomer, [Fuji II LC], zirconia-reinforced glass ionomer [Zirconomer Improved], polyacid-modified composite resin [Dyract®XTRA], bulk-fill glass hybrid restorative [Equia Forte HT Fill], conventional resin composite [Charisma Smart], and resin composite with reactive glass fillers [Cention N]) were tested. The specimens prepared from each type of restorative material were divided into five subgroups according to dietary supplements (Sambucol Kids, Resverol, Imunol, Umca, and Microfer). These specimens were immersed daily in supplement solution over a period of 28 days. Surface roughness and color difference measurements were performed at baseline and at the 7th and 28th days. The color difference and Ra values showed that there was an interaction among the type of restorative material, type of dietary supplement, and immersion time factors (p < 0.05). Whereas lower Ra values were found in the composite resin group, the highest Ra values were found in the conventional glass ionomer group. All supplements caused increasing color difference values, and Resverol and Umca showed higher discoloration values above the clinically acceptable threshold. The intake of dietary supplement type, the immersion time of the dietary supplement, and the restorative material type affected the surface roughness and color stability of the tested direct restorative materials. All of the experimental groups showed higher Ra values than clinically acceptable surface roughness values (0.2 µm). The color difference values also increased with the immersion time.
Color Stability of Bioactive Restorative Material vs Nanohybrid Resin Composite: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:Aim: This study aimed to assess the color stability of bioactive restorative materials vs nanohybrid resin composites after 3 months of immersion in three frequently consumed beverages. Materials and methods: Thirty disk-shaped specimens of Giomer dental restorative material (Shofu, Japan) and nanohybrid resin composite (Tokuyama, Japan) were performed using a Teflon mold. Super-Snap system (Shofu, Japan) was utilized to finish and polish the specimens to be preserved for 24 hours in distilled water at 37°C. The samples had been divided into three subgroups (Coffee, tea, Pepsi) (n = 5). The initially displayed color measurements of the samples were performed using a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade® V). After 7 days, 30 days, and 90 days, color measurements were repeated, and the E of each sample was estimated. E of each sample was calculated. Results: The Giomer group showed statistically significant higher E values than the nanohybrid resin composite where the p-value was ≤0.0001. Tea subgroup showed the highest statistically significant E values in both groups where the p-value was ≤ 0.0001. The highest statistically significant color change was recorded at 3 months. Conclusion: The color of bioactive restorative material is less stable if compared with nanohybrid resin composite. Clinical significance: As tea and coffee are popular beverages, particularly in Middle Eastern nations, dentists must advise patients about the color change of resin restorations. Effect of different polishing methods on roughness and color stability of air-abraded restorative materials after artificial accelerated aging

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the effect of air abrasion and polishing procedures on roughness and color stability of ceramic and composite materials after artificial accelerated aging. Methods: In this study, six restorative materials were tested: feldspathic ceramic (CEREC Blocks), glass ceramic (IPS e.max CAD), resin-based hybrid ceramic (Cerasmart), microhybrid composite (Charisma Classic), nanohybrid composite (Charisma Diamond) and nanoceramic composite (CeramXOne). Forty square-shaped composite specimens were fabricated from each composite and CAD-CAM ceramic material. Initial surface roughness measurements were performed using a profilometer and color measurements of each specimen with a spectrophotometer. Ten control specimens for each group did not receive air abrasion. The other specimens were treated by an air abrasion device and then were randomly divided into three subgroups of 10 specimens (n= 10). After air abrasion, 10 specimens of each group did not receive polishing (Air abrasion group) and others were repolished with Sof-Lex kit (Sof-Lex group) or a rubber kit (Rubber group). Surface roughness and color measurements were repeated before and after 300 hours of artificial accelerated aging (AAA). The univariate test and then three-way ANOVA and two-way ANOVA were performed for comparison of groups (α= 0.05). Results: The univariate statistical analysis revealed that the restorative materials were differently affected after air abrasion, polishing methods and AAA (P< 0.001). Three-way ANOVA showed that the surface roughness of the restorative materials increased after air abrasion and AAA (P< 0.001). Two-way ANOVA showed statistically significant differences between color changes of ceramic (CEREC and IPS e.max CAD) and composite based restorative materials (P< 0.001). Clinical significance: Clinicians should be aware that air abrasion at a specified power and time significantly changes the surface roughness of the materials except for CEREC. Additionally, polishing procedures (Sof-Lex, Rubber) did not significantly reduce the surface roughness of the ceramic groups. After air abrasion, depending on the material type used clinically, restorations should be repolished to reduce roughness and ensure color stability.

Abstract:Background: The effect of an immune-boosting beverage (SAM) containing Sambucus Nigra, an energy beverage (ENE), an in-office bleaching (BLE) agent with 25% hydrogen peroxide superior, glazing (GLA) or polishing (POL) methods, and professional dental prophylaxis (PDP) on the color of CAD-CAM restorative materials is unknown. Methods: In total 210 specimens were prepared, consisting of CAD-CAM feldspathic (FC), zirconia-reinforced lithium disilicate ceramic (ZLS) and hybrid ceramic (HC). The ceramic specimens were divided according to the polishing methods of glazing (GLA) and mechanical polishing (POL). All materials were divided into two groups: with and without BLE. A 25% hydrogen peroxide superior (HPS) gel was used for BLE. After the baseline (BAS) measurement, the specimens were immersed in 3 different beverages (distilled water (DIS), SAM, ENE). After 28 days, a fine-grained (RDA 7) prophylaxis paste was applied. Statistical analysis of ∆E00 color difference values was performed by 3-way ANOVA and Bonferroni test (α = 0.05). Results: The effect of all other actions except material-BLE-beverage on color for BAS-Day 28 was statistically different (p < 0.05). The effect of material, material-BLE, beverage on color for Day 28-PDP was statistically different (p < 0.05). After 28 days, the lowest color change was found in FC-GLA and HC immersed in DIS (p = 0.0001) and the highest in FC-POL immersed in ENE (p = 0.0002). PDP was efficient in color recovery in HC immersed to DIS, ENE and SAM (p = 0.0010). For FC, HC and ZLS, BLE caused a higher color change (p < 0.0001). Regardless of the material, the highest color change for BLE-beverage was found in BLE-treated specimens immersed in ENE (p = 0.0496) and the lowest color change was found in non-BLE-treated specimens immersed in SAM (p = 0.0074). Conclusions: In materials pre-exposed to 25% HPS, the effect of PDP on color recovery was lower than in unexposed materials. After 28 days, mechanical polishing produced higher color change in FC than glazing, however, in ZLS effects of glazing and mechanical polishing on color were similar. For material/polishing method, HC was the most effective. ENE caused higher color change than DIS and SAM. PDP was more effective than ENE in restoring color to DIS- and SAM-immersed specimens.
The Evaluation of Color and Surface Roughness Changes in Resin based Restorative Materials with Different Contents After Waiting in Various Liquids: An SEM and AFM study

Abstract:The aim of the study was to evaluate of surface roughness and color changes of the resin-based five restorative dental materials after aging in liquids at different pH values. Totally 250 specimens were prepared, including 50 specimens for the each material group from five different restorative materials (G1[Filtek Z550], G2[Beautifil II], G3[Vertise Flow], G4[Dyract XP], G5[GCFujiIILC]), using the 10-mm diameter and 2-mm thickness molds. A total of 50 specimens in the each group, were divided into five subgroups (n = 10) to be immerse into five liquids at different pH. After initial color and roughness measurements, samples were stored in the same liquids for 7 and 14 days and all of the measurements were repeated on the 7th and 14th days. scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy analyses were performed in the all groups. When the color change(ΔE) results are examined statistically; most of the ΔE is in Fuji II LC; and at least in Filtek Z550, it was determined that cola and gastric acid had the greatest effect on ΔE averages and showed significant differences (p < .05). When the average roughness values(Ra) are analyzed statistically, the highest values were found in Fuji II LC and the lowest values were found in Filtek Z550 (p < .05). The liquids which had the highest roughness average (ΔRa) were statistically significant and gastric acid and orange juice were the most effective ones (p < .05). Asidic beverages significantly increased the surface roughness and discoloration of dental restorative materials. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: The results of this research showed that dental restorative materials, which are resin-based, affected both the color and surface roughness after waiting in the low pH value beverages. These results are supported with the scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images in our research. Clinically, this situation will create esthetic and functional problems in the dental filling restorations. For this reason, the results of this study seem to be important and we think that this article could be contribute to the literature.

For RBCs, a total of 120 specimens, 30 for each material, were prepared using 10 mm diameter and 2 mm thick molds. For flowable bulk fill RBC, a total of 40 specimens, 10 for each material, were prepared using 10 mm diameter and 4 mm thick molds (n = 10). After initial color and SR measurements, samples were stored in the liquids for 14 days and all of the measurements were repeated on 14th days. Comparative evaluation of probiotic solutions on surface roughness and microhardness of different restorative materials and enamel

Abstract:This research study aimed to investigate the impact of probiotic mouthwash and kefir on the surface characteristics, specifically surface roughness and microhardness, of different restorative materials, as well as permanent and deciduous tooth enamels. Thirty disc-shaped specimens were prepared from composite resin (G-ænial Posterior (GP)), polyacid-modified composite resin (compomer) (Dyract-XP (DXP)), and resin-modified glass ionomer cement (Ionoseal (IS)). Additionally, thirty specimens of enamel were obtained from permanent teeth (PT) and thirty from deciduous teeth (DT) by embedding buccal and lingual sections, acquired through vertical sectioning of 15 permanent and 15 deciduous human tooth crowns in the mesiodistal orientation within acrylic resin blocks. The specimens were then categorized into three distinct groups and immersed for 14 days in one of the following solutions: distilled water, kefir or probiotic mouthwash. The mean surface roughness values of all specimens were assessed using an atomic force microscope, while the mean surface microhardness was measured using a Vickers hardness measuring instrument. The results revealed a statistically significant difference in mean surface roughness among the various restorative materials (p < 0.001). Among the restorative materials, the IS material exhibited notably higher mean surface roughness values than other restorative materials and tooth enamel, while no significant differences were observed between the PT and DT groups. Importantly, the main effect of the solutions under investigation was not statistically significant (p = 0.208). No significant difference was found between the surface roughness values of specimens subjected to the different solutions. When evaluating the effects of materials and solutions on microhardness, the main effects of material and solution variables and the influence of material-solution interactions were statistically significant (p < 0.001). Taken together, these results indicate that consistent use of kefir or probiotic mouthwashes may impact the surface properties of various restorative materials and tooth enamel.

Abstract:Statement of problem Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) materials have become popular for dental restorations; however, which materials should be preferred in terms of surface properties after biofilm formation is unclear. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of biofilm formation on the discoloration properties of resin-infiltrated ceramic and glass ceramic CAD-CAM materials and human teeth and to examine the effect of the brushing procedure on color change. Material and methods One hundred and six 2-mm-thick specimens were prepared from IPS e.max CAD and Cerasmart, and a total of 53 intact human teeth were used. Five specimens from each group were used to measure the amount of live biomass in the biofilm. The remaining 48 specimens in each group were divided into 4 subgroups: kept in distilled water without the formation of dental biofilm (DW), kept in tea without the formation of dental biofilm (T), kept in distilled water after the formation of dental biofilm (DWB), and kept in tea after the formation of dental biofilm (TB) (n=12). After finishing and polishing the materials, initial color measurements were made using a spectrophotometer, and surface roughness measurements were made using noncontact profilometer. After creating a biofilm layer in DWB and TB, all specimens were kept in their solutions at 37 °C for 24 hours, and the color measurements were repeated. After the biofilm layer had been removed by brushing, a third color measurement was made. The data were statistically analyzed with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and two-way ANOVA (α=.05). Results The lowest roughness value was observed in Cerasmart. Tooth-IPS e.max CAD gave similar results. The Cerasmart material had the most viable biomass, whereas the IPS e.max CAD material had the least. TB had the highest ΔE1 value for all materials and DW had the lowest ( P <.05). The brushing procedure caused the materials to return to their initial colors or reduce the color change in most groups. Conclusions The presence of biofilm on CAD-CAM materials immersed in distilled water caused an unacceptable degree of discoloration (ΔE>1.8), and immersion in tea led to greater color change. The adhesion of biofilm to restorative dental materials plays an important role in the coloring of these dental materials.

Abstract:Objective: To determine the effects of conventional cigarette smoking (CS) and recent heated tobacco products (HTPs) on the surface roughness and color stability of different indirect restorative materials. Materials and methods: One hundred disc-shaped samples were constructed of three different restorative CAD/CAM materials: lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max CAD; Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein), zirconia (BruxZir® Zirconia, Glidewell, USA) and polyetheretherketone (BioHPP® bredent GmbH, Germany). Of the IPS e.max CAD and the Bruxzir samples, 20 samples were glazed, and 20 samples were polished, while the BioHPP samples were all polished according to the manufacturer's instructions. Fifty samples were subjected to conventional cigarette smoking (LM, Philip Morris International Inc., Egypt) (Groups: IPS e.max CAD_Glazed exposed to CS (LD_G_Cig), IPS e.max CAD_Polished exposed to CS (LD_P_Cig), Bruxzir_Glazed exposed to CS (Zr_G_Cig), Bruxzir _Polished exposed to CS (Zr_P_Cig) and BioHPP exposed to CS (PEEK_Cig) and fifty samples were exposed to heated tobacco product smoking (Heets, Russet selection, Philip Morris International Inc., Italy) (Groups: IPS e.max CAD_Glazed exposed to HTP (LD_G_HTP), IPS e.max CAD_Polished exposed to HTP (LD_P_HTP), Bruxzir_Glazed exposed to HTP (Zr_G_HTP), Bruxzir CAD_Polished exposed to HTP (Zr_P_HTP) and BioHPP exposed to HTP (PEEK_HTP).. Six hundred cigarettes/heets representing 30 days of medium smoking behavior (20 cigarettes/day) were used. Before and after exposure to smoke, the surface roughness of all the samples was measured using JITAI8101 surface roughness tester (Beijing Jitai Tech Detection Device Co., Ltd, China, and the color parameters were assessed using VITA Easyshade Advance 4.01 (VITA shade, VITA made, VITA). The data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA, paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. The significance level was set at α < 0.05. The surface topography was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy to determine changes in the surface chemical composition. Results: Both types of smoking caused significant increases in the surface roughness of all the samples. There was a significant difference in color change between CS and HTP for all materials with different surface finish (P < 0.01) and zirconia had the greatest effect on color change (P < 0.001). In contrast, polyetheretherketone (PEEK) "BioHPP" had the least effect (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Exposure to different types of smoking induce changes in the surface topography and color of different esthetic restorative materials. Compared with HTP, conventional cigarette smoke has a greater effect on the surface roughness and color stability of esthetic restorative materials. The glazed surfaces showed less change in surface topography than did the polished surfaces. Zirconia showed better color stability when compared to polyetheretherketone (PEEK).
Supplementation of Energy Drinks with Green Tea Extract: Effect on In Vitro Abrasive/Erosive Dentin Wear

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the effect of the supplementation of energy drinks with green tea extract on abrasive and erosive dentin wear. Materials and methods: Six groups, each comprising 15 bovine dentin samples, were prepared, yielding a total of 90 samples. Erosion was performed by immersing the samples in Red Bull and Red Bull light with and without green tea extract. Tap water with and without green tea extract was used as the control groups. The samples were subjected to abrasive/erosive cycling for five days. The following cycling was performed daily: toothbrush abrasion (20 brushstrokes; 2.5 N); eight erosive cycles (2 min storage in the respective solutions); in between the erosive cycles, storage in artificial saliva (60 min) and again toothbrush abrasion (20 brushstrokes; 2.5 N). During the night, samples were again stored in artificial saliva. Abrasive/erosive dentin wear was measured using a stylus profilometer (µm, accuracy = 40 nm). The measured dentin loss results from the vertical position shift on the y-axis from base to final profile after the wear process in 2D. Pairwise comparisons between the groups were carried out using Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: The following dentin wear (median [IQR]) was measured: Red Bull: 1.9 µm (0.5); Red Bull Light: 1.3 µm (0.3); Red Bull with green tea extract: 0.8 µm (0.3); Red Bull Light with green tea extract: 0.3 µm (0.5); Tap water with green tea extract: -0.2 µm (0.7); Tap water: -1.0 µm (1.2). The comparison of all tested groups to each other proved to be statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The supplementation of energy drinks with green tea extract provide a protective effect against erosive/abrasive wear in vitro.
Effects of various beverages on characteristics of provisional restoration materials

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the effect of common beverages on four currently used provisional restoration materials: Protemp®4, Integrity®, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) block, and acrylic resin. Flowable resin composite is included as a control group. Materials and methods: Each material was formed into disks of 10-mm diameter and 4-mm thickness (N = 40) by loading the material into acrylic molds. The exposed surface in the mold was covered using a glass slide to prevent an oxygen inhibition layer, and polymerization then proceeded. The solidified disks were placed in distilled water for 24 h. These samples (n = 8) were then immersed for 14 days in one of four different beverages: water, orange juice, cola, and coffee. Changes in color dimension, hardness, and roughness were observed and then analyzed using two-way repeated analysis of variance. Results: The provisional materials had more obvious changes in all three color dimensions than the flowable resin composite. Integrity showed the biggest changes, followed by acrylic resin and PMMA block, whereas Protemp had the smallest changes. The hardness of all the materials significantly decreased after immersion in any of the beverages for 14 days. There were no changes in surface roughness when the materials were immersed in distilled water. The surface roughness of the PMMA block significantly decreased in orange juice whereas that of Integrity and acrylic resin significantly increased in cola. Conclusion: Different kinds of provisional materials had different degrees of staining due to their composition. Moisture had a significant influence on the hardness of materials, and the acidity of cola significantly roughened the surface of the provisional materials.
