Abstract:SUMMARY The ELISA and an immunoblotting technique were used to study F38-type mycoplasmas – an important cause of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia – and a number of related mycoplasma species, subspecies, types or serogroups. Two-way ELISA cross-reactivity was demonstrated between five mycoplasmas, namely strain F38, Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides (LC strain), M. equigenilalium, M. primatum and bovine serogroup 7. In addition one-way cross-reactivity was demonstrated between F38 and each of the following mycoplasmas: M. mycoides subsp. mycoides (two SC strains), M. mycoides subsp. capri, and bovine serogroup L. F38 and M. capricolum did not cross-react. Immunoblot analysis, unlike ELISA, revealed that F38 and M. capricolum were closely related. At least four major protein antigens were shared between F38, M. mycoides subsp. mycoides (SC and LC strains), M. mycoides subsp. capri and bovine serogroup 7. The ELISA cross-reactions (above) shown by M. equigenitalium and M. primatum with each other, with F38 and with other mycoplasmas were not apparent by immunoblotting.
Effect of finishing and polishing systems on the surface roughness and color change of composite resins

Abstract:BACKGROUND: This study is to examine the surface roughness and color changes occurring on composite resins following the application of different finishing and polishing systems.MATERIAL AND METHODS: In our study, a total of 200 samples were prepared from composites resin (6×2 mm) containing supra-nano, submicron hybrid, nanohybrid, nano-ceramic and microhybrid filler. They were polished with diamond, aluminum oxide, silicon carbide finishing and polishing systems. The initial color values of composite samples were measured with a spectrophotometer and surface roughness values with a profilometer. After that, samples were immersed of coffee solution and color measurements were repeated on the 1st and 7th day. The differences between surface roughness (Ra) and color change values (∆Eab) were evaluated using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test (p<0.05).RESULTS: Finishing and polishing systems produced a statistically significant difference between the surface roughness values of nano-ceramic, submicron hybrid and microhybrid composite resin samples (p<0.05). Supra nano composite, which showed the lowest surface roughness after all finishing and polishing systems, showed the least color change after 7 days compared to other composite groups (p<0.05). The microhybrid composite with the highest surface roughness was the most color changing composite group (p<0.5).CONCLUSIONS: The spiral finishing and polishing system containing diamond particles was the system to provide the least color difference on all composite groups. However, color differences of all composite resin groups were found to exceed the perceptibility threshold (PT) and acceptability threshold (AT). Abstract:Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscope images of resin‐based composites 14 days after immersion in coffee, cola, energy drink, and distilled water. The aim of this study is to evaluate the surface roughness (SR) and color changes of single‐shade and nanohybrid resin‐based restorative materials (RBC) after immersion in liquids at different pH values. For RBCs, a total of 120 specimens, 30 for each material, were prepared using 10 mm diameter and 2 mm thick molds. For flowable bulk fill RBC, a total of 40 specimens, 10 for each material, were prepared using 10 mm diameter and 4 mm thick molds (n = 10). Abstract:CLINICAL HISTORY A 24-year-old Zimbabwean refugee presented to his general practitioner with a 6-month history of persistent low back pain. He had fallen while running away from the Zimbabwean opposition party before entering the United Kingdom. He complained of pain in his right leg and lower back since this fall. Examination revealed reduced knee and absent ankle reflexes on the right side with normal sensation. Conventional radiographs of the pelvis and lumbar spine showed a large lytic lesion in the sacrum (Fig. 1). An outpatient magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan was performed (Fig. 2), which showed a large soft tissue mass of intermediate signal intensity on both T1 and T2 weighted imaging involving the sacrum. The lack of endplate destruction and disk involvement made pyogenic infection unlikely but raises the possibility of a granulomatous infection. Although neoplasia could give this appearance, the patient’s age and ethnic origin were thought to favor a diagnosis of granulomatous infection, and the patient was admitted for a computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy (Fig. 3). A single acid-fast bacillus was seen on histologic examination; cultures later confirmed infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB). Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) test results were negative, and a chest x-ray showed no evidence of pulmonary TB. He began therapy with isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide, ethambutol, and pyridoxine. Because of the mass involving the sacral nerves, he commenced taking steroids. He was pyrexial initially, but the fevers settled after 3 weeks of treatment. His symptoms of low back pain and neurologic deficit also resolved 1 month after treatment.

Effects of Acidic Beverages on Color Stability of Bulk-Fill Composites with Different Viscosities

Abstract:The aim of this in vitro study is to investigate the effects of acidic beverages on the discoloration of bulk-fill composites with different viscosities. 144 disc-shaped specimens (8mm diameter × 2mm thick) were prepared from four different composite resins including a nanohybrid (Filtek Ultimate), two packable bulk-fill (Filtek Bulk Fill, Tetric N Ceram Bulk Fill), and a flowable bulk-fill composite (Tetric N Flow Bulk Fill). The specimens of each group were divided into 3 subgroups and submerged in distilled water, orange juice and coke (n=12). Color difference (∆E) were measured using CIELab color space and a compact spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade) at baseline and after 30 days of immersion. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD post-hoc tests (P<0.05). Two-way ANOVA revealed that both material type and staining solution significantly influenced ∆E values (P<0.001). Immersion in orange juice resulted in greater and significant discoloration over time in comparison to distilled water and coke (P 2.7) was observed for all bulk-fill composites tested. It can be speculated that orange juice has a more negative effect on the color stability compared to coke. Additionally, flowable bulk-fill composite was more prone to discoloration than condensable bulk-fill composites.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to investigate how two different polishing techniques affect the color stability, surface roughness, and changes in surface morphology of aged and coffee-stained bulk-fill resin composites. A total of 112 disc-shaped samples were prepared using Omnichroma Flow Bulk (OB), Charisma Bulk Flow One (CB), Estelite Bulk Fill Flow (EB), and Estelite Sigma Quick (control). Samples were divided into two subgroups (n = 16) and aged using thermocycling. A profilometer was used to measure the surface roughness (Ra) and a spectrophotometer was used for color stability (ΔE00). The EB group had the highest Ra values both before aging (disc: 0.23 ± 0.05, twist: 0.42 ± 0.05) and after aging (discs: 0.28 ± 0.04, twist: 0.46 ± 0.05). The OB group had the highest ΔE00 values before and after aging (discs: 3.06 ± 0.54, twist 3.05 ± 0.41) and the highest after coffee-staining (discs: 3.75 ± 0.70, twist: 3.91 ± 0.57). Re-polishing reduced the ΔE00 values in all materials but did not restore all to clinically acceptable levels. According to the results of this study, it can be concluded that the surface roughness and color stability of resin composites are notably influenced by the polishing technique, aging process, and coffee staining. Specimens that were polished using the multi-stage Super-Snap discs consistently exhibited smoother surfaces across all bulk-fill resin composites compared to those polished with the two-stage Diacomp plus Twist.

Abstract:Background: Color matching and stability are the essential considerations in restorative dentistry, as they contribute to the longevity and esthetic appeal of the restorations. Composites with nanoparticles and more filler content are anticipated to be more color-stable. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess and contrast the color stability of esthetic restoration materials following exposure to various antioxidant beverages. Materials and methods: A Class V cavity was prepared on the buccal surface of 40 maxillary premolars. The specimens were divided into two groups: microhybrid (MH) and nanohybrid (NH) composite. The baseline color of each tooth sample was measured and then, the samples were categorized into four subgroups based on the immersion solution (pomegranate juice, beetroot juice, black plum juice, and distilled water) and evaluated on day 1, day 7, day 14, and day 21 using a spectrophotometer-based on CIE L*a*b* color scale. For spectrophotometer analysis, CIE XYZ data were obtained and converted to CIELAB. The samples mean difference in ΔE values before and after being immersed in various beverages. Statistical analysis: The data were statistically analyzed using an independent t-test and one-way analysis of variance. Results: MH and NH composite materials showed color change after being exposed to the test beverages. Conclusion: MH composite causes more color change than NH composite at all-time intervals. Black plum showed the greatest discoloration in both composites.

Abstract:The aim of the study was to evaluate of surface roughness and color changes of the resin-based five restorative dental materials after aging in liquids at different pH values. Totally 250 specimens were prepared, including 50 specimens for the each material group from five different restorative materials (G1[Filtek Z550], G2[Beautifil II], G3[Vertise Flow], G4[Dyract XP], G5[GCFujiIILC]), using the 10-mm diameter and 2-mm thickness molds. A total of 50 specimens in the each group, were divided into five subgroups (n = 10) to be immerse into five liquids at different pH. After initial color and roughness measurements, samples were stored in the same liquids for 7 and 14 days and all of the measurements were repeated on the 7th and 14th days. scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy analyses were performed in the all groups. When the color change(ΔE) results are examined statistically; most of the ΔE is in Fuji II LC; and at least in Filtek Z550, it was determined that cola and gastric acid had the greatest effect on ΔE averages and showed significant differences (p < .05). When the average roughness values(Ra) are analyzed statistically, the highest values were found in Fuji II LC and the lowest values were found in Filtek Z550 (p < .05). The liquids which had the highest roughness average (ΔRa) were statistically significant and gastric acid and orange juice were the most effective ones (p < .05). Asidic beverages significantly increased the surface roughness and discoloration of dental restorative materials. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: The results of this research showed that dental restorative materials, which are resin-based, affected both the color and surface roughness after waiting in the low pH value beverages. These results are supported with the scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images in our research. Clinically, this situation will create esthetic and functional problems in the dental filling restorations. For this reason, the results of this study seem to be important and we think that this article could be contribute to the literature.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the color stability of aesthetic restorative resin-matrix materials after their immersion in different dietary and therapeutic solutions. Thirty disc-shaped specimens (10 × 2 mm) were prepared from three different types of resin-matrix composites used in dentistry (BE, FS, AF). The color coordinates (L*a*b*, ΔL*, Δa*, Δa*, Δb* and ΔE*) were measured using a VITA Easyshade 3D-Master (VITA Zahnfabrik, Bad Säckingen, Germany) before and after the immersion of the specimens in coffee, red wine, Coca-Cola®, Eludril Care®, and distilled water solutions for 40 h. The color change (ΔE*) was calculated and analyzed by the Kolmogorov -Smirnov test and the Kruskal -Wallis multiple-comparison test. All the restorative materials showed significant color (ΔE*) changes after their exposure to red wine, followed by coffee and Coca-Cola®; however, one nanohybrid resin-matrix composite showed a high color stability in such colored test solutions. The chemical composition and content of the organic matrix played a key role in the color stability of the resin-matrix composites. Clinicians should advise their patients about the chemical interaction between dietary substances and different resin-matrix composites.

Training for a New Profession: Research as Social Action

Abstract:This article presents an approach to training and professional practice in community psychology that dispenses with the dichotomy between research and practice. In this approach, problem definition is stimulated by community needs, research is seen as a tool for social action, value issues are made explicit, and research products are oriented toward use by community groups and agencies. Implications for changes in training strategies and sites required by the model are considered. Newbrough (1974) has wisely suggested that community psychologists must move beyond discussions of the definition of community psychology. The alternative offered us is to become problem focused. But merely focusing on particular types of problems will not resolve whatever professional identity issues or questions about graduate training remain. Problems of human services improvement and planning for the future are, of course, not the property of community psychology but belong to society in general. Community psychology will certainly not solve these problems alone, nor does focusing on them make the profession unique. We would like to suggest that the next step is to ask, How will community psychology address itself to these problems? For it is how these problems are attacked by community psychologists that can and should distinguish their work from that of other professional groups. The approach proposed in this paper requires first that we dispense with some false dichotomies we have inherited as part of our academic legacy. Doing so will allow us to develop a distinctive new role in which research, theory, and values are central in the solving of important social problems.
Effect of Brushing with Whitening Toothpaste on Color Stability and Surface Roughness of Color-Adjustment Resin-Based Composites

Abstract:Objectives: Aim of this study is to compare the color stability and surface roughness of four different color-adjustment composites produced using smart chromatic technology and a highly esthetic nano-hybrid composite after brushing with whitening toothpaste. Materials and Methods: 4 different color adjustment composites and 1 nano hybrid composite are divided into 5 main groups according to their contents. A total of 120 disc-shaped specimens (8 x 2 mm) were prepared, 24 in each group. The prepared samples were sequentially kept in solutions (tea, coffee and cherry juice) for 12 days and randomly divided into 3 subgroups (n=8). Subgroup 1, brushing with distilled water; Subgroup 2, brushing with whitening toothpaste; Subgroup 3, home bleaching agent were applied (14 days). Color measurements were made with a spectrophotometer, ΔE values were calculated using the CIELAB formula. Surface roughness values were made using a profilometer device. Samples from each group were selected for SEM surface analysis. Results: Among the composite groups, the highest coloration was observed in the Omnichroma, while the lowest ΔE values were observed in the Vittra composite group. Although the ΔE values on the 14th day were higher than the 7th day in all groups, the differences between them were statistically insignificant(p>0.05) In all composite groups (except Omnichroma), the ΔE values of brushing with whitening toothpaste at the end of the 14th day were higher than brushing with distilled water(p<0.05). Conclusions: Although the application of home bleaching agent was found to be more effective in a short time in whitening color-adjustment composites; brushing with whitening toothpaste at the end of the 14th day was found to be as effective as the application of home bleaching agent. Coloring and bleaching procedures applied to color-adjustment restorative materials did not have a significant negative effect on surface roughness values.
Enhancing Esthetics in Direct Dental Resin Composite: Investigating Surface Roughness and Color Stability

Abstract:Dental restorations must replicate the natural appearance of teeth while ensuring biocompatibility and durability. This study evaluated the surface characteristics and color stability of three dental composites-Herculite Ultra XRV, G-ænial A'CHORD, and Omnichroma-exposed to acidic beverages (red wine, black coffee, and Coca-Cola). Sixty disk-shaped specimens were prepared, polished, and immersed in these beverages. Surface roughness was assessed using profilometry and SEM analysis, hydrophobicity via contact angle analysis, and surface charge through streaming potential measurements. Color stability was evaluated using a spectrophotometer, and the pH levels of the solutions were recorded. Results showed that Herculite Ultra XRV had the highest mean contact angle (79.46° ± 6.52), indicating superior hydrophobicity, while Omnichroma had the lowest (64.94° ± 3.08), indicating more hydrophilicity. Significant color changes were observed, especially in black coffee, with ∆E values indicating notable discoloration. The acidic pH of the solutions increased surface roughness and color changes. Statistical analyses confirmed significant increases in surface roughness and color change for all composites, with the nanohybrid resin composite showing the greatest variability. These findings highlight the need for dental restorative materials with enhanced resistance to acidic environments to improve the longevity and esthetics of dental treatments.
Effect of Low pH Dietary Supplements on Discoloration of Resin Composites

Abstract:Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the consumption of low pH dietary supplements on the color stability of different resin composites. Materials and methods: Three different restorative materials were used for this in vitro study: Filtek One Bulk-Fill (FOB), Filtek Z550 (Z550), and Fill-Up (FUP). Samples fabricated from each composite group were divided into four subgroups, and color measurements were performed at baseline. The control subgroup was stored in distilled water, and the other three subgroups were immersed in acidic dietary supplement solutions (Redoxon, Supradyn, and Voonka Collagen Shake) for 2 minutes daily for 28 days. Color measurements were obtained using a digital spectrophotometer. Color change values (ΔE1) were calculated after each color measurement. Next, all samples were immersed in a coffee solution for 7 days and repeat color measurements were taken to determine ΔE2 values. The study groups were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test (α =0.05). Results: ΔE1 values were significantly different among the groups (P < 0.05). While Voonka Collagen Shake produced the greatest discoloration in FOB (1.67 ± 1.08) and Filtek Z550 (3.59 ± 1.90) materials, Fill-Up showed the highest discoloration (3.14 ± 0.37) with Supradyn. Analysis of ΔE2 values demonstrated a significant difference only for the Filtek Z550-Redoxon group versus the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Acidic dietary supplements not only produce color alterations in resin composites but also reduce the staining resistance of the composite further, depending on the type of composite and dietary supplement. Consumption of staining food after taking Redoxon effervescent tablets produces greater discoloration in Filtek Z550 restorations compared with other restorative materials.
Effects of Different Anti-Epileptic Drug Groups and Brushing on the Color Stability of Restorative Materials Used in Pedodontics: An In Vitro Evaluation

Abstract:Objectives: This study will evaluate the effects of anti-epileptic drugs and brushing used in children on the color change of three restorative materials by creating an in vitro study model. Methods: Forty samples of polyacid-modified composite resin (compomer), glass ionomer cement (GIC), and composite resin (CR) were prepared. Samples were split into four groups (n = 10) and soaked in three anti-epileptic drugs (Tegretol, Depakine, Keppra) and distilled water. For each group (n = 5), two subgroups (brushing and non-brushing) were created. Discolorations [CIEDE2000 (ΔE00)] were determined initially and on days 7 and 14. The data were analyzed with a four-factor repeated measures ANOVA analysis, and a post hoc analysis Bonferroni test was used. Results: After the second week, the highest ΔE00 value was seen in the non-brushed compomer material in the Tegretol drug group (8.59 ± 0.43). In contrast, the lowest value was seen in GIC filling material-brushing-Depakine drug (3.45 ± 2.14). ΔE00 values in the brushing groups were statistically significantly lower than those in the no brushing groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: It has been determined that the color stability of aesthetic restorative dental materials used in pediatric dentistry is affected by antiepileptic drugs. In addition, it has been determined that tooth brushing positively affects the color stability of restorative materials. Therefore, pediatric dentists should advise their patients and their relatives about this issue and take precautions.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of coffee staining and denture cleaner on the color stability of two differently polymerized (heat and microwave) denture acrylic resin in vitro . Materials and Methods: Two commonly used denture base acrylic resins and effervesecnt tablet form denture cleaner were used in this study. Disc-shaped specimens from each acrylic resin were polymerized according to the manufacturer's instructions ( n = 7). Color values were recorded before and after immersion in distilled water (I), denture cleaner (II), coffee (III), and coffee + denture cleaner (IV) with a tristimulus colorimeter using CIEDE2000 color difference formula. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Fisher's least significant difference tests were used for multiple comparisons at a 95% confidence level ( P < 0.05). Surface topography of the acrylic resin denture base specimens before and after immersion were taken under 500 × magnification. Results: The two-way ANOVA revealed significant interactions between denture base resins and solutions ( P < 0.001). Immersion in denture cleaner and coffee solution caused significant color changes in acrylic resin denture bases. Conclusion: Heat- and microwave-polymerized acrylic denture base resins can show different color stability. Immersion in coffee and denture cleaner solutions can cause noticeable color changes.
