Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

In general, there are no smooth approximations of a family of conic Kahler–Einstein metrics with Ricci curvature uniformly bounded from below. Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:We make evident a curvature tensor for every vector sub-bundle of an arbitrary manifold tangent bundle which reduces to the curvature tensor of an Ehresmann connection in the case of the horizontal sub-bundle of the tangent bundle to the total space of the nonlinear fiber bundle on which the connection is defined. Then the classical theorem of Frobenius would characterize the complete integrability of a vector sub-bundle of the tangent bundle by a zero curvature tensor in the sense of our definition here. A basic tool is a result about the curvature tensor of the natural lift of the vector sub-bundle to a manifold of maps with values in the base of that sub-bundle. Another is a localization property for a Lie algebra of vector fields over this manifold of <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://maps.These" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> allow to prove an additive formula for the curvature tensors of two supplementary sub-bundles. The main result consists in identifying a natural linear parallel transport on a supplementary vector sub-bundle along any tangent path to the vector sub-bundle under study, which is the right generalization of a linear connection parallel transport on a vector bundle along the projection in the base of that path. Then we derive the differential equation of the quotient of respective parallel transport operators induced by two different supplementary sub-bundles to the sub-bundle in question in terms of its curvature. Using this we obtain the equation of the infinitesimal variation of tangent paths to a vector sub-bundle, defined by its curvature, that appears as the root for the Jacobi equation of the infinitesimal variation of geodesics.

Abstract:Let $ (M, g) $ be an $ n $-dimensional (pseudo-)Riemannian manifold and $ TM $ be its tangent bundle $ TM $ equipped with the complete lift metric $ ^{C}g $. First, we define a Ricci quarter-symmetric metric connection $ \overline{\nabla } $ on the tangent bundle $ TM $ equipped with the complete lift metric $ ^{C}g $. Second, we compute all forms of the curvature tensors of $ \overline{\nabla } $ and study their properties. We also define the mean connection of $ \overline{\nabla } $. Ricci and gradient Ricci solitons are important topics studied extensively lately. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the tangent bundle $ TM $ to become a Ricci soliton and a gradient Ricci soliton concerning $ \overline{\nabla } $ are presented. Finally, we search conditions for the tangent bundle $ TM $ to be locally conformally flat with respect to $ \overline{\nabla } $.

Notes on the Cheeger and Colding version of the Reifenberg theorem for metric spaces

Abstract:The classical Reifenberg's theorem says that a set which is sufficiently well approximated by planes uniformly at all scales is a topological Hölder manifold. Remarkably, this generalizes to metric spaces, where the approximation by planes is replaced by the Gromov-Hausdorff distance. This fact was shown by Cheeger and Colding in an appendix of one of their celebrated works on Ricci limit spaces [8]. Given the recent interest around this statement in the growing field of analysis in metric spaces, in this note we provide a self contained and detailed proof of the Cheeger and Colding result. Our presentation substantially expands the arguments in [8] and makes explicit all the relevant estimates and constructions. As a byproduct we also shows a biLipschitz version of this result which, even if folklore among experts, was not present in the literature. This work is an extract from the doctoral dissertation of the second author.

On Riemann curvature of spherically symmetric metrics

Abstract:In this paper, studying the inverse problem, we establish a curvature compatibility condition on a spherically symmetric Finsler metric. As an application, we characterize the spherically symmetric metrics of scalar curvature. We construct a Berwald frame for a spherically symmetric Finsler surface and calculate some associated geometric objects. Several examples are provided and discussed. Finally, we give a note on a certain general $(\alpha,\beta)$-metric that appears in the literature.

The first objective is to investigate the curvature properties of the tangent bundle TM. Abstract:The Theorem of Bonnet--Myers implies that manifolds with topology $M^{n-1} \times \mathbb{S}^1$ do not admit a metric of positive Ricci curvature, while the resolution of Geroch's conjecture implies that the torus $\mathbb{T}^n$ does not admit a metric of positive scalar curvature. In this work we introduce a new notion of curvature interpolating between Ricci and scalar curvature (so called $m$-intermediate curvature), and use stable weighted slicings to show that for $n \leq 7$ the manifolds $N^n = M^{n-m} \times \mathbb{T}^m$ do not admit a metric of positive $m$-intermediate curvature.

Geometry in global coordinates in mechanics and optimal transport

Abstract:For a manifold embedded in an inner product space, we express geometric quantities such as {\it Hamilton vector fields, affine and Levi-Civita connections, curvature} in global coordinates. Instead of coordinate indices, the global formulas for most quantities are expressed as {\it operator-valued} expressions, using an {\it affine projection} to the tangent bundle. For a submersion image of an embedded manifold, we introduce {\it liftings} of Hamilton vector fields, allowing us to use embedded coordinates on horizontal bundles. We derive a {\it Gauss-Codazzi equation} for affine connections on vector bundles. This approach allows us to evaluate geometric expressions globally, and could be used effectively with modern numerical frameworks in applications. Examples considered include rigid body mechanics and Hamilton mechanics on Grassmann manifolds. We show explicitly the cross-curvature (MTW-tensor) for the {\it Kim-McCann} metric with a reflector antenna-type cost function on the space of positive-semidefinite matrices of fixed rank has nonnegative cross-curvature, while the corresponding cost could have negative cross-curvature on Grassmann manifolds, except for projective spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, first, we introduce the Berger-type deformed Sasaki metric on the cotangent bundle $T^{\ast}M$ over a Kählerian manifold $(M^{2m}, J, g)$ and investigate the Levi-Civita connection of this metric. Secondly, we present the unit cotangent bundle equipped with Berger-type deformed Sasaki metric, and we investigate the Levi-Civita connection. Finally, we study the geodesics on the cotangent bundle and on unit cotangent bundle with respect to the Berger-type deformed Sasaki metric.

Abstract:Let $(M,\nabla)$ be an $n$-dimensional differentiable manifold with a torsion-free linear connection and $T^{*}M$ its cotangent bundle. In this context we study some properties of the natural Riemann extension (M. Sekizawa (1987), O. Kowalski and M. Sekizawa (2011)) on the cotangent bundle $T^{*}M$. First, we give an alternative definition of the natural Riemann extension with respect to horizontal and vertical lifts. Secondly, we investigate metric connection for the natural Riemann extension. Finally, we present geodesics on the cotangent bundle $T^{*}M$ endowed with the natural Riemann extension.

Aspects of higher-curvature gravities with covariant derivatives

Abstract:We study various aspects of higher-curvature theories of gravity built from contractions of the metric, the Riemann tensor and the covariant derivative, $\mathcal{L}(g^{ab},R_{abcd},\nabla_a)$. We characterise the linearized spectrum of these theories and compute the modified Newton potential in the general case. Then, we present the first examples of Generalized Quasi-topological (GQT) gravities involving covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor. We argue that they always have second-order equations on maximally symmetric backgrounds. Focusing on four spacetime dimensions, we find new densities of that type involving eight and ten derivatives of the metric. In the latter case, we find new modifications of the Schwarzschild black hole. These display thermodynamic properties which depart from the ones of polynomial GQT black holes. In particular, the relation between the temperature and the mass of small black holes, $T\sim M^{1/3}$, which universally holds for general polynomial GQT modifications of Einstein gravity, gets modified in the presence of the new density with covariant derivatives to $T\sim M^{3}$. Finally, we consider brane-world gravities induced by Einstein gravity in the AdS bulk. We show that the effective quadratic action for the brane-world theory involving arbitrary high-order terms in the action can be written explicitly in a closed form in terms of Bessel functions. We use this result to compute the propagator of metric perturbations on the brane and its pole structure in various dimensions, always finding infinite towers of ghost modes, as well as tachyons and more exotic modes in some cases.

Abstract:The structure of the history phase space $\cal G$ of a covariant field system and its history group (in the sense of Isham and Linden) is analyzed on an example of a bosonic string. The history space $\cal G$ includes the time map $\sf T$ from the spacetime manifold (the two-sheet) $\cal Y$ to a one-dimensional time manifold $\cal T$ as one of its configuration variables. A canonical history action is posited on $\cal G$ such that its restriction to the configuration history space yields the familiar Polyakov action. The standard Dirac-ADM action is shown to be identical with the canonical history action, the only difference being that the underlying action is expressed in two different coordinate charts on $\cal G$. The canonical history action encompasses all individual Dirac-ADM actions corresponding to different choices $\sf T$ of foliating $\cal Y$. The history Poisson brackets of spacetime fields on $\cal G$ induce the ordinary Poisson brackets of spatial fields in the instantaneous phase space ${\cal G}_{0}$ of the Dirac-ADM formalism. The canonical history action is manifestly invariant both under spacetime diffeomorphisms Diff$\cal Y$ and temporal diffeomorphisms Diff$\cal T$. Both of these diffeomorphisms are explicitly represented by symplectomorphisms on the history phase space $\cal G$. The resulting classical history phase space formalism is offered as a starting point for projection operator quantization and consistent histories interpretation of the bosonic string model.

Abstract:This paper aims to study the Berger type deformed Sasaki metric g BS on the second order tangent bundle T 2 M over a bi-Kählerian manifold M . The authors firstly find the Levi-Civita connection of the Berger type deformed Sasaki metric g BS and calculate all forms of Riemannian curvature tensors of this metric. Also, they study geodesics on the second order tangent bundle T 2 M and bi-unit second order tangent bundle , and characterize a geodesic of the bi-unit second order tangent bundle in terms of geodesic curvatures of its projection to the base. Finally, they present some conditions for a section σ : M → T 2 M to be harmonic and study the harmonicity of the different canonical projections and inclusions of ( T 2 M , g BS ). Moreover, they search the harmonicity of the Berger type deformed Sasaki metric g BS and the Sasaki metric g S with respect to each other.
