Abstract:Composites of transition metal oxide and conducive polymer have shown great potential in optimizing the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. Specifically, NiCo2O4/polyaniline (PANI) composites are especially promising, due to the synergetic effect of the two components. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of a nickel foam-based NiCo2O4-PANI composite, where the PANI is polymerized in situ in aqueous acid, achieving co-doping of Ni2+ and Co2+ in the polymer. The synthesized composite was characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Electrochemical studies indicate that the composite exhibits an ultrahigh specific capacitance of 15.5 F.cm(-2) (3108 F.g(-1)) at a current density of 1 mA.cm(-2). In addition, the capacitance retention rate is 96.1% after 1000 charge-discharge cycles at 20 mA.cm(-2). Besides, such substrate-dependent design eliminates the electrode adhesion step in assembly compared to the substrate-free nanocomposite. A dual-electrode device made of NiCo2O4-PANI and activated charcoal exhibits a maximum energy density of 77.57 Wh.kg(-1) at 800 W.kg(-1). All these properties suggest that the materials and the synthesis route used for this NiCo2O4-PANI composite represent a promising strategy to make supercapacitor electrodes.
Electrochemical synthesis of porous Ag@PANI/MWCNTs ternary composite for electrochemical and photocatalytic application

Abstract:This paper presents a novel binder-free electrochemical synthesis of a porous ternary composite comprising polyaniline/multiwall carbon nanotubes decorated with silver nanoparticles (Ag@PANI/MWCNTs), which serves dual functions as a photocatalyst for methylene blue degradation and as an electrode for high-performance supercapacitors application. Various characterization techniques confirm that the synthesized Ag@PANI/MWCNTs composite exhibits excellent optical, chemical, electrical, structural, morphological, electrochemical and photocatalytic characteristics. The composite exhibits excellent electrochemical and photocatalytic efficacy attributed to its porosity, higher surface area, conductivity and rapid redox properties. Electrochemical tests reveal specific capacitance of 862 F/g, energy density of 65.78 Whkg −1 , power density of 444.44 Wkg −1 and cycling stability with 79% capacitance retention even after 10,000 cycles. As a photocatalyst, the composite achieves approximately 95% degradation in 25 min with reusability up to five cycles. It also exhibits high transient photocurrent responses (0.36 mA/cm 2 ) and a high-rate constant (0.13 min −1 ), confirming excellent photocatalytic activity. The synergistic effect of PANI/MWCNTs and the incorporation of Ag nanoparticles contribute to the outstanding performance of the synthesized nanocomposite. Thus, it is expected that the synthesized Ag@PANI/MWCNT is a promising ternary composite which may prove to be a noble material for photocatalytic and energy storage-related devices.

Abstract:TiO2-C@polyaniline (PANI) are synthesized on the surface of carbon cloth (CC) as flexible electrode, in which TiO2-C nanowire arrays (NWAs) work as supporting frame to enhance the mechanical stability of composites, while PANI is coated on TTiO2-C NWAs to make a core-shell structure and form a continuous conducive 3D network between isolated TiO2-C nanowires. By virtue of such unique structure design, the as-prepared TiO2-C@ PANI composites achieve desirable cycling performance while possess high specific capacitance. Concretely, this TiO2-C@PANI composite shows remarkable specific capacitance of 1818 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1) good rate capability with 75.5% capacitance retention at 10 A g(-1), and excellent cycling performance with 80% capacity retention over 5000 cycles at a charge-discharge current of 10 A g(-1). Besides, the prefabricated TiO2-C@PANI//AC asymmetric hybrid supercapacitor also exhibits a high energy density of 32.4 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 850.0 W kg(-1). In sum, such TiO2-C@PANI CC electrode material has a bright future in the application of supercapacitors and provides a new strategy for other conducive polymer-based electrochemical devices.

Abstract:In this work, a novel approach was employed to prepare and utilize lead (II) oxide and poly(aniline-co-thiophene) (PANI-co-PTh) composite materials as electrode materials for supercapacitors, marking the first instance of such utilization in the literature. PANI-co-PTh was synthesized in bulk through chemical polymerization, and the conducting polymers underwent comprehensive spectroscopic, physical, and microscopic characterization. Subsequently, the material, incorporating lead (II) oxide (PbO) as a composite, was employed as electrode materials in asymmetric-type supercapacitors. The main results indicate a clear relationship between the surface area of conducting polymers and their specific capacitance. Notably, PANI-co-PTh-6, possessing the highest surface area, demonstrated the highest specific capacitance. Particle size distribution and specific surface area for PANI-co-PTh-6 were determined as 130 μm and 64.76 m 2 g −1 , respectively. The PbO@PANI-co-PTh-3 configuration exhibited the highest specific capacitance, reaching 294 Fg −1 at a 10 mVs −1 scan rate. Remarkably, during long-cycle experiments, this system demonstrated a capacity retention of 70.69% after 1000 cycles. The inaugural application of the PbO@PANI-co-PTh-3 supercapacitor showcased notable capacitance values, establishing a substantial foundation for future research endeavors in this field.

Abstract:The hierarchically porous carbon/polyaniline electrodes derived from the nonmetallic part of waste printed circuit board have been synthesized by a convenient carbonization and activation method. A detailed analysis of the morphology, structure, and electrochemical performances of as-prepared composites is presented. As expected, the balanced specific surface area and porous structure manifest their remarkable electrochemical performances. Apparently, the multiple synergistic effects are crucial to simultaneously achieving high capacity and significantly increased stability. As a result, the electrodes display exceptional rate capability, superior cyclic stability, and high specific capacitance (520.0 F/g at 1 A/g). Furthermore, the asymmetrical device possesses an improved energy density of 9.3 Wh/kg with a power density of 62.4 W/kg in H2SO4 electrolyte. Moreover, a potential mechanism contributing to the superior performance of hierarchically porous carbon/polyaniline composites has been studied in detail. Noteworthy, this study provides a feasible strategy for recycling waste printed circuit boards. Importantly, this approach will provide a path toward the rational synthesis and design of electrode materials for supercapacitors that take both high-performance and cost-effective into account.

Abstract:Printers generate electronic waste in the form of used ink cartridges, which has an impact on resources such as plastics and precious metals. Toner metal oxide repurposed for supercapacitors could save valuable materials. Figuring out the optimal electrolyte concentration, on the other hand, is critical for optimizing supercapacitor performance and increasing energy/power density. This paper investigates the characteristics of waste toner-derived Fe3O4 and its composite with two conducting polymers, i.e., polyaniline (PANI) and polypyrrole (PPy) as electrode materials. With studies performed in 2 M, 4 M, and 6 M KOH electrolyte, a comparative analysis is made to understand the effect of electrolyte concentration on supercapacitor performance linked to the enhanced performance. The highest specific capacitance was achieved in 4 M KOH electrolyte which was calculated to be 319 F/g and 286 F/g at 10 mV/s composite synthesized with PPy and PANI, respectively, in a three-electrode assembly. The supercapacitor device performed well in terms of energy density and power density when tested in a Swagelok cell assembly. These outcomes offer significant insights into the potential of waste-derived materials for sustainable energy devices, implying a promising future for energy storage applications.Graphical Abstract

Development and Performance of a PANI@NiMnO3 Nanocomposite for Enhanced Supercapacitors and Photocatalytic Applications

Abstract:Conductive polymers are gaining considerable attention as a potential material for supercapacitor electrodes due to their favorable properties. Among these, polyaniline (PANI) stands out as a cost-effective and easy to synthesize, making it a promising candidate for improving energy storage applications. This study presents the synthesis of a hybrid composite consisting of PANI and NiMnO3 (NMO) perovskite using the chemical oxidative polymerization method. The morphology and structure of the composite were analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. XRD results showed that the addition of NMO transformed the amorphous structure of PANI into a semicrystalline form, leading to enhanced conductivity. SEM images revealed a more uniform and compact structure, with NMO distributed unevenly within the polymer matrix. Optical analysis indicated that a reduction in the band gap of PANI@NMO reached 2.5 eV. N2 adsorption-desorption measurements confirmed an increase in the surface area and pore volume. The photocatalytic activity of the PANI@NMO nanocomposite was tested by degrading methylene blue (MB) dye under UV/visible light. The nanocomposite showed high efficiency, degrading 87.75% of MB dye after 125 min of irradiation as compared to their counter parts. Additionally, electrochemical tests demonstrated an improved electrochemical performance of the composite due to enhanced crystallinity, increased surface area, and reduced electron-hole recombination rate. These results suggest that the PANI@NMO nanocomposite has great potential for use in supercapacitors and photocatalysis.

Abstract:Polyaniline (PANI) stands out as a highly promising conducting polymer with potential for advanced utilization in high-performance pseudocapacitors. Therefore, there exists a pressing need to bolster structural durability of PANI, and this might be achieved via developing composite materials that enhance its viability for supercapacitor applications. In this particular study, a pioneering approach was undertaken to produce a novel NiMn2O4/PANI supercapacitor electrode material. A comprehensive array of analytical techniques was employed to ascertain structural configuration, morphology, oxidation states of elements, composition, and surface characteristics of electrode material. Electrochemical evaluation of NiMn2O4/PANI composite shows a specific capacitance (Cs) around 1530.01 F/g at 1 A/g. Significantly, composite material demonstrates an outstanding 93.61% retention of its capacity after an extensive 10,000 cycles, signifying remarkable cycling stability. 50-hour chronoamperometry test showcased excellent stability of fabricated material. This significant advancement bears immense promise for its potential implementation in high-efficiency energy conversion systems and heralds a new phase in development of supercapacitor technology with improved stability and performance metrics.

Abstract:CuMn 2 O 4 is commonly selected as electrode material in supercapacitors owing to its cost-effectiveness and favorable performance as a binary transition metal oxide. The limited energy density of binary metal oxides restricts their widespread use as supercapacitors, thereby highlighting the need to develop a supercapacitor structure based on CuMn 2 O 4 . This study aims to enhance the electrochemical performance of CuMn 2 O 4 and polyaniline (PANI) by exploiting their complementary characteristics through their coupling. Various physiochemical instruments were utilized to investigate the physical properties of synthesized nanomaterials. Specific capacitance (Cs) of PANI/CuMn 2 O 4 composite electrode was determined to be 1181 F g −1 when tested at a 1 A g −1 . Additionally, the cycle retention capacity of the supercapacitor was found to be 95% after undergoing 5000th cycles. The exceptional electrochemical performances of the three electrodes are believed to be attributed to the quick redox kinetics and the dynamic equilibrium between them. The outstanding electrochemical behavior of the nanohybrid can be ascribed to combine the effect of PANI and pseudocapacitance capabilities of CuMn 2 O 4 nanoparticles. Consequently, a novel electrode material with enhanced functionality and stability has been successfully synthesized for application in energy storage devices.

Abstract:In this work, a polyaniline coated hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) composite (PANI@HPC) is developed using a vapor deposition polymerization technique. The as synthesized composite is applied as the supercapacitor electrode material, and presents a high specific capacitance of 531 F g−1 at current density of 0.5 A g−1 and superior cycling stability of 96.1% (after 10,000 charge–discharge cycles at current density of 10 A g−1). This can be attributed to the maximized synergistic effect of PANI and HPC. Furthermore, an aqueous symmetric supercapacitor device based on PANI@HPC is fabricated, demonstrating a high specific energy of 17.3 Wh kg−1.

Abstract:Polyaniline (PANI) and carbonaceous materials and metallic compounds have played a significant role in energy storage and conversion devices. PANI has demonstrated tremendous potential in the supercapacitor industry due to its high specific capacitance, high flexibility, and economical price. The CPs damage the hierarchical structure during the charging and discharging process and start swelling. Thus, incorporating polyoxometalates (POMs) into the conducting polymer matrix increases the stability of the electrode material. Here, we have demonstrated a comparative study of two newly synthesized composite materials consisting of K 5 H 2 [PV 4 W 8 O 40 ] ·11H 2 O, (PV 4 W 8 ) POM incorporated into two different supports, such as pseudocapacitive polyaniline (PANI) and EDLC activated carbon (AC) matrix. It was observed that the PANI-PV 4 W 8 composite exhibited excellent capacitance nature at 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 electrolyte solution than AC-PV 4 W 8 . The PANI-PV 4 W 8 composite demonstrated the specific capacitance of 584 F g −1 at 0.8 A g −1 . The composite also exhibited energy and power density of 81Wh kg −1 and 1598 W kg −1 , respectively. Besides, the composite shows 93.13% capacity retention after 4500 cycles by cyclic voltammetry measurement at a 500 mV s −1 scan rate. Furthermore, the AC-PV 4 W 8 showed a specific capacitance of 62 F g −1 at the current density of 0.6 A g −1 . Interestingly, The PANI-PV 4 W 8 composite could glow up the red and yellow LED bulb for more than a minute, suggesting a promising electrode material for practical supercapacitor purposes.

Abstract:We demonstrated a novel and convenient synthesis of amino-Ti3C2/polyaniline (N-Ti3C2/PANI) composites as high-performance supercapacitors electrode by chemical bonding between organ-like N-Ti3C2 and PANI chains, which were successfully deposited on FTO-glass substrates by a facile two-steps electrochemical reactions. Owing to effective chemical bonds between PANI chains and N-Ti3C2 layers, and well-defined Ti3C2 layers profiting from organ-like structures, it could afford the rapid pathways for charge/ion transfer and prevent the restacking of Ti3C2 layers. Herein, the effects of the electrochemical time of aniline, morphology, structure and electrochemical properties of organ-like N-Ti3C2/PANI composites were explored. Experimental results show that N-Ti3C2 can act as active sites to combine with the amine nitrogens of PANI chains and promote the growth of aniline monomers on the interlamination and surface of Ti3C2 layers. PANI possesses the good pseudocapacitance behavior which can enhance surface area and interlaminar spacing of the Ti3C2 Mxenes. The N-Ti3C2/PANI composites achieve the maximum area capacitance as high as 228 mF cm−2 at a scan rate of 5mVs−1, and almost 85% capacitance retention is obtained after 1000 charging/discharging cycles. Moreover, the facile synthesis of organ-like N-Ti3C2/PANI composite can provide a convenient and green strategy to prepare promising electrode materials for supercapacitors.

Abstract:To move away from fossil fuels, the electrochemical reaction plays a critical role in renewable energy sources and devices. The anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is always coupled with these reactions in devices but suffers from large energy barriers. Thus, it is important for developing efficient OER catalysts with low overpotential. On the other hand, there are large amounts of metals in electronic waste (E-waste), especially various transition metals that are promising alternatives for catalyzing OER. Hence, this work, which focuses on upcycling Class II BaTiO3 Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors, of which two trillion were produced in 2011 alone. We achieved this by first using a green solvent extraction method that combined the ionic liquid Aliquat® 336 and hydrochloride acid to recover a mixed solution of Ni, Fe and Cu cations, and then using such a solution to synthesize high potential catalysts NiFe hydroxide and NiCu hydroxide for OER. NiFe-hydroxide has been demonstrated to have faster OER kinetics than the NiCu-hydroxide and commercial c-RuO2. In addition, it showed promising results after the chronopotentiometry tests that outperform c-RuO2.

Abstract:A novel Ti3C2@PDA/NiCo2S4 composites as high performance supercapacitor electrodes were synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment process. The chemical modification and uniformly coating of Ti3C2 surface by polydopamine (PDA) can prevent the structural collapse and over-oxidation of Ti3C2 during the hydrothermal synthesis of NiCo2S4. Furthermore, the confined-synthesis of smaller NiCo2S4 particles between the Ti3C2 layers, not only prevent the restacking of Ti3C2 that between the adjacent monolayers during cycling, but also afford high surface areas accessible to charge transfer and ion diffusion. Thereby, enhance the electrochemical cycling stability of the Ti3C2@PDA/NiCo2S4 composite. It is significant to explore how NiCo2S4 alters the microstructure, morphology as well as supercapacitors performance of Ti3C2 to tune the microstructure and performance of Ti3C2 by appropriate hydrothermal synthesis strategy. The experimental results exhibit a prominent improvement in the supercapacitor performance, the gravimetric capacitance of Ti3C2@PDA/NiCo2S4 composites achieve as high as 495 F g-1 at 2 mV s-1, which increase the 10 times as compared to the pristine Ti3C2. Furthermore, the cycling stability of the Ti3C2@PDA/NiCo2S4 composites electrode was enhanced significantly by the hierarchical architecture, and showed exceptional capacitance retention (81.16%) even after 3000 cycles. The dramatic improvement in the supercapacitors performance of Ti3C2@PDA/NiCo2S4 electrodes is attributed to impressive conductive matrix Ti3C2, the effective modification of small size Ni2Co2S4, and the strong interfacial interaction between Ti3C2@PDA and NiCo2S4. This study demonstrating its attractive application prospect of Ti3C2 Mxenes modified with bimetallic sulfide as electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:A novel high-performance supercapacitor electrode material, polyaniline (PANI) modified two-dimensional Ti3C2 composites(denoted as PANI-Ti3C2), has been synthesized via in situ polymerization. The experiment results showed that the introduction of PANI to Ti3C2 can improve the electrochemical properties of Ti3C2 because the amino groups in PANI not only increased the electric conductivity for faster ion transport but also improved the surface wettability of Ti3C2 for more active sites and provided faradaic reactions for additional capacity. The specific capacitance of PANI-Ti3C2 can achieve a maximum of 164 F g(-1) at 2 mV s(-1) and 1.26 times greater than that of Ti3C2 (131 Fg(-1)). Abstract:The composite material composed of zinc sulfide, copper sulfide and porous carbon is prepared in this study, exhibiting excellent performances in the field of supercapacitor electrode and photocatalysts. In the degradation process of organic pollutants, zinc sulfide/ copper sulfide with heterostructure effectively reduce the recombination rate of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. And the porous carbon substrate can not only accelerate the separation of photo-carriers but also provide numerous active sites. Furthermore, the sample can be easily separated after decomposing the organic pollutants. As a supercapacitor electrode, the combination of zinc sulfide/copper sulfide with large pseudo-capacitance and porous carbon material with excellent double-layer capacitance results in superior electrochemical performances. The composite electrode shows a high specific capacitance of 1925 mF cm-2/ 0.53 mAh cm-2 at 4 mA cm-2. And the symmetric flexible supercapacitor based on the composite electrode achieves an outstanding energy density (0.39 Wh cm-2 at the power density of 4.32 W cm-2). Therefore, the zinc sulfide/ copper sulfide/porous carbonized cotton nanocomposites (pCZCS) prepared herein exhibit dual functions of photocatalysts with high efficiency as well as energy storage materials with high energy density, which is interesting and important for expanding the practical applications in cross fields.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/polyaniline (PANI) composite and carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT-COOH)/PANI composites are fabricated via in situ chemical oxidative polymerization method. The crystallinity, chemical structure and morphology of the composites are investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), respectively. Based on the different morphology, the formation mechanism of the composites is proposed and the influence of the morphology on the electrochemical performance is predicted. The electrochemical properties of the composites are evaluated by galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. The MWCNT-COOH/PANI composite electrode shows higher specific capacitance than that of the MWCNT/PANI composite, as can be ascribed to the interpenetrating network structure of the MWCNT-COOH/PANI composite and the co-doping of DBSA and MWCNT-COOH. The MWCNT-COOH/PANI composite with 15% MWCNT-COOH presents the best electrochemical performance owing to the synergistic and comprehensive effect of the components. Using functionalized MWCNT provides an efficient approach to prepare high-performance composite materials for electrical energy storage fields.

Abstract:We proposed an in situ method for the synthesis of polyaniline (PANI)/MnO2 nanocomposite by using an in situ polymerization reaction. Morphology analysis showed a porous structure of PANI/MnO2 nanocomposite with MnO2 particles (range from 5 to 15nm) uniformly dispersed in the polyaniline support. Thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectrum revealed that the components of PANI and MnO2 in the nanocomposite can be controlled through changing the polymerization time. Toward the utility in supercapacitors, the electrochemical properties of the nanocomposite were studied using cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry tests in 0.5M Na2SO4 neutral solution. The results showed that the materials had a specific capacitance as large as 510Fg−1 in the potential range from 0.0 to 0.65V (vs. SCE) at a charge–discharge current density of 1.0Ag−1, greatly improved compared to those of pure PANI and MnO2 materials.

Abstract:Polyaniline (PANI) has been widely studied because of its unique physicochemical properties, but its practical significance in supercapacitors is seriously affected by its structural collapse during charging and discharging. We have successfully synthesized transition metal oxide/carbon-polyaniline composite electrode materials by in situ growth of polyaniline using the electrodeposition method with a metal-organic skeleton as a sacrificial template. This method not only can obtain high capacitance materials but also carbon materials provide buffer space during long-term charge/discharge to improve the overall stability. ZnCoO x /C-PANI-3 has a smaller charge transfer resistance and solution resistance compared to other materials, indicating that the interfacial coupling between PANI and ZnCoO x /C shortens the ion transport path between electrolyte and electrode surface, which is beneficial for rapid ion transfer and thus enhances its electrochemical performance. ZnCoO x /C-PANI-3 as an electrode material in the three-electrode system, has remarkable specific capacitance (1055 Fg -1 at a current density of 1 Ag -1 ) and good cycling stability (85.7% capacitance retention after 10000 cycles of charge and discharge at high current density). Similarly, the asymmetric supercapacitor (ZnCoO x /C-PANI-3//AC) assembled with ZnCoO x /C-PANI-3 as the positive electrode material and activated carbon as the negative electrode material has a maximum energy density of 42.77 Whkg -1 at a power density of 705 Wkg -1 and a remarkable cycle life with a capacitance retention rate of 80% after 5000 cycles. This research opens up new avenues for studying polyaniline/MOF derivatives (transition metal oxide-carbon) composites.
