Abstract:With the rapid progress of artificial intelligence (AI), integration of biological functionalities into electronic devices has become crucial for performing complex tasks and adaptation to different work environments. In this respect, artificial nociceptors and memristive synapses have emerged as essential components for bio-inspired electronics, advanced sensing, and computation applications. However, limited reports are available on the realization of a multifunctional sensor-perception integrated AI platform, combining sensing and computing capabilities in a single device. In this work, to the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate nociceptive and synaptic functionalities at nanoscale for the first time in a single memristor. Through conductive atomic force microscopy, a direct evidence of nociceptive sensitivity to spatially varying voltage stimuli has been observed. Meanwhile, the same nociceptor exhibits various adaptive behaviours of a biological synapse, affirming its capability to develop robust neuromorphic computing platform within the sensor itself. Notably, a linear and symmetric weight modulation in potentiation and depression processes has been achieved, which is essential for high accuracy and efficient learning of neuromorphic computing devices. Moreover, all the neuromorphic functionalities have been accomplished in a forming-free manner. Hence, the present report opens avenues for future neuro-inspired, sensor-computing-integrated decentralized AI platforms, targeting energy efficient "on-receptor" computing.
