Abstract:Kidney transplantation (KT) is the most frequently performed organ transplantation. In Germany, KT is performed in urology and surgery departments with unknown consequences of this parallel structure. The aim of the study was to compare the development and outcome of KT in urology and surgery departments.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to explore and compare the performance and development of urology and surgery departments in Germany regarding kidney transplantation (KT). Specifically, the main objectives of the study include: 1. **Development and Distribution Analysis**: The trend changes in the number and geographical distribution of kidney transplant surgeries performed by urology and surgery departments in Germany from 2006 to 2021. 2. **Quantity Changes**: Analyzing the changes in the overall number of kidney transplants, particularly the decrease in the number of kidney transplants in the urology departments. 3. **Complications and Transplant Outcomes**: Comparing the intraoperative and postoperative complication rates in kidney transplants between urology and surgery departments, and evaluating the immediate and long-term functional quality of different types of kidney transplants (i.e., kidney transplants from deceased donors and living donor kidney transplants). 4. **Interdisciplinary Differences**: Investigating whether there are significant clinical outcome differences between urology and surgery in handling kidney transplants, especially considering the immediate kidney function recovery and the quality of the transplanted organ at discharge and one year later. Through these analyses, the study hopes to provide a basis for future clinical decision-making and improve the quality of patient care. Additionally, the research emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly in the context of introducing new technologies such as robot-assisted surgery.
