Abstract:A Copper-substituted lead apatite, named LK-99 by its authors, has recently emerged as a candidate for the world's first ambient-conditions superconductor, but has since not demonstrated the anticipated properties when subject to independent scrutiny. In this review we cover the experimental and theoretical studies that have been dedicated to this unusual material, while briefly discussing the original arXiv papers. So far, all the synthesis methods result in the formation of a multiphase material with unpredictable structure and unstable stoichiometry. This is a core reason why the studies discussed in the review yield different results when it comes to magnetic, electrophysical properties and even visual appearance of the material. DFT studies of the electronic structure of Pb9Cu(PO4)6O are reviewed and compared with our original calculations, and the limitations of the DFT approach are discussed. While reviewing theoretical publications on the matter, we bring forward the flat-band superconductivity model and discuss the nature of flat bands and their ability to sustain superconducting transport in the model material. The possibility of the compound being a Mott insulator, given the specifics of its electronic structure, as well as the role of doping, is highlighted. Finally, we raise the question of viability of achieving superconductivity in doped apatites beyond the LK-99 formula.

Abstract:Lee, Kim, and coworkers have recently claimed room-temperature and ambient-pressure superconductivity in a copper-doped lead apatite material named LK-99. However, the polycrystalline material synthesized has a significant fraction of copper(I) sulfide. Copper(I) sulfide has a known phase transition at 104 degrees C from an ordered low-temperature phase to a high-temperature superionic phase. As a result of this phase transition, copper(I) sulfide exhibits sharp transitions in electrical resistivity and heat capacity, which are expected to coincide with the temperature-induced transitions reported for LK-99. This implies that LK-99 must be synthesized without any copper(I) sulfide to allow unambiguous validation of the superconducting properties of LK-99.

Abstract:An intuitive chemical perspective on the LK-99 material is outlined and supported by DFT calculations. A hidden flat Lead band that exhibits instability toward charge density wave formation is exposed. Electron transfer between Lead CDW/conduction bands and Cu$_3$d$^9$/Cu$_3$d$^{10}$ impurity states is suggested to embody the observed phenomenology reminiscent of room temperature superconductivity. The inter-system electronic instability is reflected in a chemical instability involving 2Pb$_{10-x}$Cu$_x$(PO$_4$)$_6$O => Pb$_{20-2x}$Cu$_{2x}$(PO$_4$)$_{12}$(O$_2$). Implications for tuning posttreatments as well as handling of the LK-99 material emerge.

Abstract:A recent article published by Lee <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://et.al" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. claimed to have successfully achieved superconductivity at room temperature (RT) has become a topical issue. Besides the research paper, Lee and his team provided a demonstration video of LK-99 half levitating (HL) on a magnet. Such interesting HL appearance has drawn tremendous sensation both in academia and the network. However, the true identity of LK-99 still remains unclear, i.e., whether the HL behavior can necessarily indicate the diamagnetism behavior of the sample. Here, we fabricated our own LK-99 samples following the procedures reported by Lee et al. We found quite a few sample pieces showing the typical HL that is similar to those reported. Meanwhile, oxidation during the sample preparation was found to deleterious to acquiring HL in the sample, while furnace cooling or water quenching in the last step revealed little effect. However, our careful observations indicated that those HL pieces are more likely simple ferromagnetic. Then we conducted a comprehensive study on the behavior patterns of typical diamagnetism and ferromagnetic substances interacting with a Nd2Fe14B magnet, and provided instructions to distinguish the characteristics between ferromagnetic and diamagnetic to prevent misunderstanding of LK-99 like levitation behavior.

Abstract:Recently, Sukbae Lee et al.reported that material Pb$_{10-x}$Cu$_x$(PO$_4$)$_6$O (LK-99) has a series of characteristics of room temperature superconductors, including diamagnetic transition, resistance jump, nearly zero-resistance, magnetic field-dependent IV characteristics and so on (<a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.6111/JKCGCT.2023.33.2.061" href="https://doi.org/10.6111/JKCGCT.2023.33.2.061" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.6111/JKCGCT.2023.33.2.061</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2307.12008" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.12008">arXiv:2307.12008</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2307.12037" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.12037">arXiv:2307.12037</a>). However, whether LK-99 is really a room temperature superconductor is still controversial. On the one hand, some people think that the relatively weak diamagnetism of LK-99 reported by Sukbae Lee et al. is not the Meissner effect. On the other hand, there are doubts about the authenticity of its zero-resistance test results. Global replication studies have shown that LK-99 does have a large diamagnetic (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2308.01516" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2308.01516">arXiv:2308.01516</a>), and also found a zero-resistance behavior at a low temperature of 110 $^\circ$K (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2308.01192" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2308.01192">arXiv:2308.01192</a>). However, up to now, there is still no direct reproducible evidence to support Sukbae Lee et al.'s conclusion that LK-99 is a room temperature superconductor. Here, a distinct resistance jump was observed at about 387 $^\circ$K under ambient pressure in our experiment for unclear reason including possible impurity's contribution. The overall resistance of the test LK-99 sample still shows semiconductivity, and the resistance cannot really drop to zero. Our findings indicate that to identify the true potential of LK-99, high quality crystals without impurity are very important.

Abstract:The quest for room-temperature superconductors has been teasing scientists and physicists, since its inception in 1911 itself. Several assertions have already been made about room temperature superconductivity but were never verified or reproduced across the labs. The cuprates were the earliest high transition temperature superconductors, and it seems that copper has done the magic once again. Last week, a Korean group synthesized a Lead Apatite-based compound LK-99, showing a T$_c$ of above 400$^\circ$K. The signatures of superconductivity in the compound are very promising, in terms of resistivity (R = 0) and diamagnetism at T$_c$. Although, the heat capacity (C$_p$) did not show the obvious transition at T$_c$. Inspired by the interesting claims of above room temperature superconductivity in LK-99, in this article, we report the synthesis of polycrystalline samples of LK-99, by following the same heat treatment as reported in [1,2] by the two-step precursor method. The phase is confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, performed after each heat treatment. The room temperature diamagnetism is not evidenced by the levitation of a permanent magnet over the sample or vice versa. Further measurements for the confirmation of bulk superconductivity on variously synthesized samples are underway. Our results on the present LK-99 sample, being synthesized at 925$^\circ$C, as of now do not approve the appearance of bulk superconductivity at room temperature. Further studies with different heat treatments are though, yet underway.

Deciphering the Enigma of Cu-Doped Lead Apatite (LK-99): Structural Insights, Electronic Properties, and Implications for Ambient-Pressure Superconductivity

Abstract:The most recent discovery, the Cu-doped lead apatite LK-99, is a proposed room-temperature superconductor operating under ambient pressure. However, this discovery has brought a slew of conflicting results from different scientific groups. While some observed the absence of electrical resistance, others could not confirm any signs of superconductivity in LK-99. Here, we investigate the structural and electronic properties of LK-99 and its antecedent compounds through quantum mechanics (QM) and QM-based molecular dynamics (QM-MD) simulations. Our study elucidates the insulating nature of base compounds, Pb$_{10}$(PO$_4$)$_6$O and Pb$_{10}$(PO$_4$)$_6$(OH)$_2$, spotlighting their large band gaps. Notably, Cu doping in LK-99 disrupts its symmetry, yielding a distorted ground-state crystal structure with a triclinic P1 symmetry and CuO$_4$ square coordination. Such alterations predispose LK-99 to exhibit semiconducting behaviors, characterized by a flat band above the Fermi energy, arising from Cu-3d and O-2p orbitals. In addition, the S doping sustains the triclinic P1 symmetry but leads to a significantly reduced band gap, with a band emerging primarily from Cu-3d and S-3p orbitals. These findings are important in understanding LK-99's structural and electronic properties and provide a strategic compass for the development of high-T$_C$ superconductors.

Abstract:The desire to create an energy efficient world is bound to be incomplete without the discovery of a room temperature superconductor at ambient pressure. A recent report on the room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor has inspired scientists to study the Cu doped Lead apatite named as LK-99. Here, we have synthesized Cu doped LK-99 and Ni-doped LK-99 compounds and studied their temperature dependent transport and magnetization behavior. In spite of the presence of impurity phase Cu$_2$S, the temperature dependent resistance shows an insulating nature of the sample. The radio frequency penetration depth measurement unveils the absence of diamagnetic flux expulsion in this sample. The temperature dependent ac susceptibility measurements reveal the paramagnetic nature of the Ni doped LK-99.

Abstract:The experimental results hinting at the room temperature and ambient pressure superconductivity and magnetic levitation in LK-99 attracted an unprecedented interest. While attempts of other teams to reproduce the reported observations on similar samples failed so far, it seems worthwhile to try building a theoretical model that would explain the ensemble of the available data. One of important features that needs to be explained is an apparent contradiction between an extremely high critical temperature Tc and rather modest critical magnetic field Bc and critical current jc reported for LK-99. We show theoretically, that these data may be quantitatively reproduced assuming the interplay between exciton- and phonon-induced superconductivity, while the conventional BCS or Brinkman-Rice-Bardeen-Cooper-Schriefer (BR-BCS) mechanisms would result in a much higher Bc for the same Tc.

Abstract:The vision of ``room temperature superconductivity'' has appeared intermittently but prominently in the literature since 1964, when W. A. Little and V. L. Ginzburg began working on the `problem of high temperature superconductivity' around the same time. Since that time the prospects for room temperature superconductivity have varied from gloom (around 1980) to glee (the years immediately after the discovery of HTS), to wait-and-see (the current feeling). Recent discoveries have clarified old issues, making it possible to construct the blueprint for a viable room temperature superconductor.

The First Room-Temperature Ambient-Pressure Superconductor

Abstract:For the first time in the world, we succeeded in synthesizing the room-temperature superconductor ($T_c \ge 400$ K, 127$^\circ$C) working at ambient pressure with a modified lead-apatite (LK-99) structure. The superconductivity of LK-99 is proved with the Critical temperature ($T_c$), Zero-resistivity, Critical current ($I_c$), Critical magnetic field ($H_c$), and the Meissner effect. The superconductivity of LK-99 originates from minute structural distortion by a slight volume shrinkage (0.48 %), not by external factors such as temperature and pressure. The shrinkage is caused by Cu$^{2+}$ substitution of Pb$^{2+}$(2) ions in the insulating network of Pb(2)-phosphate and it generates the stress. It concurrently transfers to Pb(1) of the cylindrical column resulting in distortion of the cylindrical column interface, which creates superconducting quantum wells (SQWs) in the interface. The heat capacity results indicated that the new model is suitable for explaining the superconductivity of LK-99. The unique structure of LK-99 that allows the minute distorted structure to be maintained in the interfaces is the most important factor that LK-99 maintains and exhibits superconductivity at room temperatures and ambient pressure.

Sayonara BCS: Realization of Room Temperature Superconductivity as a result of a First Order Phase Transition

Abstract:By making periodic thru-holes in a suspended film, the phonon system can be modified. Motivated by the BCS theory, the technique -- so-called phonon engineering -- was applied to a metallic niobium sheet. It was found that its electrical resistance dropped to zero at 175 K, and the zero-resistance state persisted up to 290 K in the subsequent warming process. Despite the initial motivation, neither these high transition temperatures nor the phase transition with thermal hysteresis can be accounted for by the BCS theory. Therefore, we abandon the BCS theory. Instead, it turns out that the metallic holey sheet is partly oxidized to form a niobium-oxygen square lattice, which has points of resemblance to a copper-oxygen plane, the fundamental component of cuprate high-$T_{c}$ superconductors. Therefore, the pairing mechanism underlying this study should be related to that of cuprate high-$T_{c}$ superconductors, which we may not yet understand. In addition to the electrical results of zero resistance, the holey sheet exhibited a decrease in magnetization upon cooling, i.e., the Meissner effect. Moreover, the remnant magnetization was clearly detected at 300 K, which can only be attributed to persistent currents flowing in a superconducting sample. Thus, this study meets the established criteria for a conclusive demonstration of true superconductivity. Finally, the superconducting transition with the unambiguous thermal hysteresis is discussed. According to Halperin, Lubensky, and Ma, or HLM for short, any superconducting transition must always be first order with thermal hysteresis because of the intrinsic fluctuating magnetic field. The HLM theory is very compatible with the highly oriented system harboring two-dimensional superconductivity.

Abstract:A material called LK-99, a modified-lead apatite crystal structure with the composition Pb$_{10-x}$Cu$_x$(PO$_4$)$_6$O ($0.9<x<1.1$), has been synthesized using the solid-state method. The material exhibits the Ohmic metal characteristic of Pb(6s1) above its superconducting critical temperature, $T_c$, and the levitation phenomenon as Meissner effect of a superconductor at room temperature and atmospheric pressure below $T_c$. A LK-99 sample shows $T_c$ above 126.85$^\circ$C (400 K). We analyze that the possibility of room-temperature superconductivity in this material is attributed to two factors: the first being the volume contraction resulting from an insulator-metal transition achieved by substituting Pb with Cu, and the second being on-site repulsive Coulomb interaction enhanced by the structural deformation in the one-dimensional(D) chain (Cu$^{2+}$-O$_{1/2}$-Cu$^{2+}$ along the c-axis) structure owing to superconducting condensation at $T_c$. The mechanism of the room-temperature $T_c$ is discussed by 1-D BR-BCS theory.

Absence of superconductivity in LK-99 at ambient conditions

Abstract:The report of synthesis of modified Lead apatite (LK-99) with evidence of superconductivity at more than boiling water temperature has steered the whole scientific community. There have been several failures to reproduce superconductivity in LK-99 including partial successes. Here, we have continued our efforts to synthesize phase pure LK-99 with improved precursors. The process has been followed as suggested by Sukbae Lee et. al., [1,2]. The phase purity of each precursor is evidenced by Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and well fitted by Rietveld refinement. The PXRD confirms the synthesis of phase pure polycrystalline LK-99 with apatite structure. The freshly synthesized sample does not show any signature of superconductivity levitation on a magnet (diamagnetism). The magnetization measurements on SQUID also show that LK-99 is diamagnetic at 280 K, there is no sign of superconductivity in LK-99 at room temperature. Moreover, we have also performed first principle calculations to investigate the electronic band structure of the LK-99 near Fermi level. Our study verifies that the Cu doped lead apatite (LK-99) has bands crossing at Fermi level, indicating generation of strong correlation in the system.

Comments On Supersolidity

Abstract:Assuming that the well-confirmed non-classical rotational inertia (NCRI) effect in solid $^4$He, suggested by Leggett, indicates supersolid behavior, we make a number of remarks about both theory and experiment. (1) The long-wavelength, low-frequency ("hydrodynamic") part of the theory of Andreev and Lifshitz has nine variables, and thus must have nine modes. We find a new mode associated with lattice point diffusion (and thus vacancy diffusion); it may explain the absence of supersolid behavior in low-frequency pressure-driven flow. (2) The observed upper limit for the NCRI fraction (NCRIf) of about 20%, in disordered samples, is more-or-less the same as the already predicted upper limit for the superfluid fraction of a well-ordered crystal; we argue that this may not be a coincidence. (3) The negative experimental evidence for a second propagating hydrodynamic mode (expected to be fourth sound-like) may be due to the long relaxation times $\tau$ at low temperature $T$; only for frequencies satisfying $\omega\tau\ll1$ does the hydrodynamic theory apply. (4) The fundamental principles of quantum mechanics imply that Bose-Einstein condensation is not necessary to define a quantum-mechanical phase; therefore the absence of a finite condensate fraction $f_{0}$ does not necessarily imply the absence of superfluidity. (5) Just as vortices should avoid occupied lattice sites to provide a vortex-lattice interaction, the lattice should interact with the vortices to provide a lattice-vortex interaction; thus dislocations should interact with vortices, whose motion is affected by rotation. We discuss some experimental implications for the vortex liquid model, shear response, hysteresis, and relaxation.
