Abstract:The High Luminosity (HL-LHC) project aims to increase the integrated luminosity of CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) by an order of magnitude compared to its initial design. This requires a large increase in bunch intensity and beam brightness compared to the first three LHC runs, and hence poses serious collective-effects challenges, related in particular to electron cloud, instabilities from beam-coupling impedance, and beam-beam effects. Here, we present the associated constraints and the mitigation measures proposed to achieve the baseline performance of the upgraded LHC machine. We also discuss the interplay of these mitigation measures with other aspects of the accelerator, such as optics, physical and dynamic apertures, the collimation system, and crab cavities. Additional potential sources of intensity limitations are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:The challenging High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) beam requirements will lead in the future to unprecedented beam parameters along the LHC injector chain. In the SPS accelerator these requests translate into about a factor two higher intensity and brightness than the present design performance. In addition to the challenge of producing and accelerating such beams, these parameters affect the resistance of the existing equipment against beam impact. Most of the protection devices in the SPS ring, its transfer lines and the LHC injection areas will be put under operational constraints which are beyond their design specification. The equipment concerned has been reviewed and their resistance to the HL-LHC beams checked. Theoretical and simulation studies have been performed for the SPS beam scraping system, the protection devices and the dump absorbers of the SPS-to-LHC transfer lines, as well as for the LHC injection protection devices. The first results of these studies are reported, together with the future prospects.

Abstract:Since 2010 the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the accelerator with the highest stored energy per beam, with a record of 140 MJ at a beam energy of 4 TeV, almost a factor of 50 higher than other accelerators. With such a high stored energy, machine protection aspects set the boundary conditions for operation during all phases of the machine cycle. Only the low-intensity commissioning beams can be considered as relatively safe. This document discusses the interplay of machine operation and machine protection at the LHC, from commissioning to regular operation.

Abstract:LHC upgrades are being considered both towards higher luminosity (HL-LHC) and towards higher energy (HE-LHC). In this paper we report initial studies of the beam-beam effects in the HE-LHC [1]. The HE-LHC aims at beam energies of 16.5 TeV, where the transverse emittance decreases due to synchrotron radiation with a 2-hour damping time. As a result of this emittance, shrinkage the beam-beam parameter increases with time, during a physics store. The beam-beam limit in the HE-LHC is explored using computer simulations.

Abstract:Abstract: The LHC will operate at an energy of 7 TeV with a luminosity of 1034cm−2s−1. This requires two beams, each with 2808 bunches. The nominal intensity per bunch is 1.1 ·1011 protons. The energy stored in each beam is about 350 MJ, sufficient to heat and melt 500 kg of cop- per. Protection of machine equipment in the presence of such powerful beams is essential (1). In this paper a spe- cific failure of the protection system is discussed, resulting in the full beam accidentally being directed towards the ac- celerator equipment (2). We carried out two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of the heating of a solid copper block with a face area of 2 cm x 2 cm, which is irradiated by the LHC beam with nominal parameters. With the present simulations we estimate that after an impact of about 100 bunches the beam heated region has expanded drastically and the density in the inner 0.5 mm decreases by about a factor of 10. The bulk of the following beam will not be absorbed and continue to tunnel further and further into the target. The results will allow estimating the length of a sacrificial absorber presently under discussion. A very in- teresting "spinoff" from this work would be the study of high-energy-density states of matter induced by the LHC beam, because a specific energy deposition of 200 kJ/g is achieved after 2.5 µs.

Abstract:This paper introduces the protection of circular particle accelerators from accidental beam losses. Already the energy stored in the beams for accelerators such as the TEVATRON at Fermilab and Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN could cause serious damage in case of uncontrolled beam loss. With the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the energy stored in particle beams has reached a value two orders of magnitude above previous accelerators and poses new threats with respect to hazards from the energy stored in the particle beams. A single accident damaging vital parts of the accelerator could interrupt operation for years. Protection of equipment from beam accidents is mandatory. Designing a machine protection system requires an excellent understanding of accelerator physics and operation to anticipate possible failures that could lead to damage. Machine protection includes beam and equipment monitoring, a system to safely stop beam operation (e.g. extraction of the beam towards a dedicated beam dump block or stopping the beam at low energy) and an interlock system providing the glue between these systems. This lecture will provide an overview of the design of protection systems for accelerators and introduce various protection systems. The principles are illustrated with examples from LHC.

Abstract:The Upgrade II of the Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) experiment is proposed to be installed during the CERN Long Shutdown 4, aiming to operate LHCb at 1.5×1034 cm−2 s−1 that is 75 times its design luminosity [1] and reaching an integrated luminosity of about 400 fb−1 by the end of the High Luminosity LHC era. This increase of the data sample at LHCb is an unprecedented opportunity for heavy flavor physics measurements. A first upgrade of LHCb (Upgrade I), completed in 2022, has already implemented important changes of the LHCb detector and, for the Upgrade II, further detector improvements of the tracking system, the particle identification system and the online and trigger infrastructure are being considered. Such a luminosity increase will have an impact not only on the LHCb detector but also on the LHC magnets, cryogenics, and electronic equipment placed in the insertion region 8. In fact, the LHCb experiment was conceived to work at a much lower luminosity than ATLAS and CMS, implying minor requirements for protection of the LHC elements from the collision debris, and therefore, a different layout around the interaction point. The Upgrade I has already implied the installation of an absorber for the neutral particle debris (TANB). However, the luminosity target proposed for this second upgrade requires to review the layout of the entire insertion region in order to ensure safe operation of the LHC magnets and to mitigate the risk of failure of the electronic devices. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the implications of the Upgrade II of LHCb in the experimental cavern and in the tunnel with a focus on the LHCb detector, electronic devices, and accelerator magnets. This proves that the Upgrade II luminosity goal can be sustained with the implementation of protection systems for magnets and electronics. The electronics placed in the experimental areas and in the cavern needs to be protected to mitigate a single event effect risk, which may imply recurring downtime of the LHC. On the other hand, protection for the first quadrupole of the final focus triplet and for the separation dipole are needed to prevent their quench and to reach the desired lifetime. Introduction to Machine Protection

Abstract:Protection of accelerator equipment is as old as accelerator technology and was for many years related to high-power equipment. Examples are the protection of powering equipment from overheating (magnets, power converters, high-current cables), of superconducting magnets from damage after a quench and of klystrons. The protection of equipment from beam accidents is more recent, although there was one paper that discussed beam-induced damage for the SLAC linac (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center) as early as in 1967. It is related to the increasing beam power of high-power proton accelerators, to the emission of synchrotron light by electron-positron accelerators and to the increase of energy stored in the beam. Designing a machine protection system requires an excellent understanding of accelerator physics and operation to anticipate possible failures that could lead to damage. Machine protection includes beam and equipment monitoring, a system to safely stop beam operation (e.g. dumping the beam or stopping the beam at low energy) and an interlock system providing the glue between these systems. The most recent accelerator, LHC, will operate with about 3 x 10$^{14}$ protons per beam, corresponding to an energy stored in each beam of 360 MJ. This energy can cause massive damage to accelerator equipment in case of uncontrolled beam loss, and a single accident damaging vital parts of the accelerator could interrupt operation for years. This lecture will provide an overview of the requirements for protection of accelerator equipment and introduces various protection systems. Examples are mainly from LHC and ESS.

Abstract:These days, while the landscape of discoveries at LHC has yet to be unveiled, planning for upgrades twenty years or more in advance towards a possible experimental scenario, might sound very imaginative and ambitious. Nevertheless, as plans are being worked out for the High Luminosity LHC upgrade, it is possible to plan keeping the ATLAS and CMS detectors operational for the following High Energy phase. The natural and radiation-induced aging of some components, calorimeters especially, needs to be carefully addressed. Even planning for a very new detector might not be unreasonable.

Abstract:Numerical simulations have shown that the powerful 7 TeV proton beams that will be generated at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be a very efficient tool to create samples of High-Energy-Density (HED) matter including strongly coupled plasmas. These plasmas are abundant in nature as they exist in starts, brown dwarfs and giant planets that makes study of such systems very important. Recent experiments carried out at CERN to study the material damage caused by 450 GeV proton beams from Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) to high-Z targets have shown that this beam which has an energy 100 times less than the LHC beams causes melting of the material. This provides some confirmation of our theoretical predictions concerning the LHC beams.

Abstract:The paper provides an overview of the radiation protection challenges and the advanced simulation techniques used to study and plan complex interventions in radiation areas at CERN, particularly with regard to the Large Hadron Collider. The operational radiation protection aspects are supported by state of the art simulations by means of the FLUKA Monte Carlo code and estimates obtained via several tools, used within the CERN Radiation Protection group, such as ActiWiz, SESAME, and the Fluence Conversion Coefficients (FCC) method which extend the built-in FLUKA capabilities. The paper covers the general Radiation Protection principles and rules in force at CERN, the simulation tools/techniques used to fulfill operational tasks and predictive studies, and a set of case studies covering relevant applications at the Large Hadron Collider machine and experiments.

Abstract:The LHC will operate at an energy of 7 TeV with a lu- minosity of 1034cm−2s−1. This requires two beams, each with 2808 bunches. The energy stored in each beam of 362 MJ. In a previous paper the mechanisms causing equip- ment damage in case of a failure of the machine protection system was discussed, assuming that the entire beam is de- flected into a copper target (1, 2). Another failure sce- nario is the deflection of beam into carbon material. Car- bon collimators and beam absorbers are installed in many locations around the LHC to diffuse or absorb beam losses. Since the collimator jaws are close to the beam, it is very likely that they are hit first when the beam is accidentally deflected. Here we present the results of two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of the heating of a solid carbon cylinder irradiated by the LHC beam with nominal param- eters, carried out using the BIG-2 computer code (3) while the energy loss of the 7 TeV protons in carbon is calculated using the well known FLUKA code (4). Our calculations suggest that the LHC beam may penetrate up to about 10 m to 15 m in solid carbon, resulting in a substantial damage of collimators and beam absorbers.

Abstract:For the foreseeable future, the exploration of the high-energy frontier will be the domain of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Of particular significance will be its high-luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC), which will operate until the mid-2030s. In this endeavour, for the full exploitation of the HL-LHC physics potential an improved understanding of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton is critical. The HL-LHC program would be uniquely complemented by the proposed Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC), a high-energy lepton-proton and lepton-nucleus collider based at CERN. In this work, we build on our recent PDF projections for the HL-LHC to assess the constraining power of the LHeC measurements of inclusive and heavy quark structure functions. We find that the impact of the LHeC would be significant, reducing PDF uncertainties by up to an order of magnitude in comparison to state-of-the-art global fits. In comparison to the HL-LHC projections, the PDF constraints from the inclusive and semi-inclusive LHeC data are in general more significant for small and intermediate values of the momentum fraction x. At higher values of x, the impact of the LHeC and HL-LHC data is expected to be of a comparable size, with the HL-LHC constraints being more competitive in some cases, and the LHeC ones in others.
The High-Level Trigger for the CMS Phase-2 Upgrade

Abstract:The High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) will usher in a new era in high-energy physics. The HL-LHC experimental conditions entail an instantaneous luminosity of up to $7.5 \times 10^{34}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ and up to 200 simultaneous collisions per bunch crossing (pileup). To cope with those conditions, the CMS detector will undergo a series of improvements, in what is known as the Phase-2 upgrade. In particular, the upgrade of the Data Acquisition and of the High-Level Trigger (DAQ-HLT) will have to address a much higher event rate and more complex events. In this paper, we will discuss the aspects of the HLT upgrade, detailing the development of the online reconstruction, the construction, characterisation and timing/rate measurement of a simplified HLT menu, the role of heterogeneous architectures in the HLT and the plan of work and milestones until the beginning of Phase-2.

Abstract:The interaction of dust particles with the LHC proton beams accounts for a major fraction of irregular beam loss events observed in LHC physics operation. The events cease after a few beam revolutions because of the expulsion of dust particles from the beam once they become ionized in the transverse beam tails. Despite the transient nature of these events, the resulting beam losses can trigger beam aborts or provoke quenches of superconducting magnets. In this paper, we study the characteristics of beam-dust particle interactions in the cryogenic arcs by reconstructing key observables like nuclear collision rates, loss durations and integral losses per event. The study is based on events recorded during 6.5 TeV operation with stored beam intensities of up to $\sim 3\times 10{^{14}}$ protons per beam. We show that inelastic collision rates can reach almost $10^{12}$ collisions per second, resulting in a loss of up to $\sim 1.6\times 10^{8}$ protons per event. We demonstrate that the experimental distributions and their dependence on beam parameters can be described quantitatively by a previously developed simulation model if dust particles are assumed to be attracted by the beam. The latter finding is consistent with recent time profile studies and yields further evidence that dust particles carry a negative charge when entering the beam. We also develop different hypotheses regarding the absence of higher-loss events in the measurements, although such events are theoretically not excluded by the simulation model. The results provide grounds for predicting dust-induced beam losses in presence of higher-intensity beams in future runs of the High-Luminosity LHC.

Abstract:In the High Energy LHC (HE-LHC), a beam energy of about 16.5 TeV is currently contemplated. The beam screen issues linked to the use of 20 T dipole magnets instead of 8.33 T are discussed, with a particular emphasis on two mechanisms, the magneto-resistance and the anomalous skin effect, assuming the nominal machine and beam parameters. The magneto-resistance effect always leads to an increase of the material resistivity (as the mean free path in the presence of a transverse magnetic field becomes smaller). As concerns the anomalous skin effect, the anomalous increase of surface resistance of metals at low temperatures and high frequencies is attributed to the long mean free path of the conduction electrons: when the skin depth becomes much smaller than the mean free path, only a fraction of the conduction electrons moving almost parallel to the metal surface is effective in carrying the current and the classical theory breaks down.

Abstract:The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will operate with 7 TeV/c protons with a luminosity of 10(34) cm(-2) s(-1). This requires two beams, each with 2808 bunches. The nominal intensity per bunch is 1.15 x 10(11) protons and the total energy stored in each beam is 362 MJ. In previous papers, the mechanisms causing equipment damage in case of a failure of the machine protection system was discussed, assuming that the entire beam is deflected onto a copper target. Another failure scenario is the deflection of beam, or part of it, into carbon material. Carbon collimators and beam absorbers are installed in many locations around the LHC close to the beam, since carbon is the material that is most suitable to absorb the beam energy without being damaged. In case of a failure, it is very likely that such absorbers are hit first, for example, when the beam is accidentally deflected. Some type of failures needs to be anticipated, such as accidental firing of injection and extraction kicker magnets leading to a wrong deflection of a few bunches. Protection of LHC equipment relies oil the capture of wrongly deflected bunches with beam absorbers that are positioned Close to the beam. For maximum robustness, the absorbers jaws are made Out of carbon materials. It has been demonstrated experimentally and theoretically that carbon survives the impact of a few bunches expected for such failures. However, beam absorbers are not designed for ilia or failures in the protection system, such as the beam dump kicker deflecting the entire beam by a wrong angle. Since beam absorbers are closest to the beam, it is likely that they are hit first in my case of accidental beam loss. In the present paper we present numerical simulations using carbon as target material in order to estimate the damage caused to carbon absorbers in case of major beam impact.

Abstract:Survival in groups of termites is known to be socially facilitated since individual longevity is increased together with the size of the group. Here we report on experimental evidence that survival as a function of group size in {\textit Cornitermes cumulans} (Kollar) does not increase asysmptotically but it peaks in a group size range at which individual longevity is maximal. Strinkly, this same effect in other social insects was noted more than fifty years ago, but it was regarded as ``aberrant'' since it has been generally assumed that individual survival should increase with the size of the group. We also provide evidence that individual activity --measured as mobility-- is maximal at approximately the same group-size range as the observed survival

Abstract:The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) will serve as an injector to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN as well as it is used to accelerate and extract proton beams for fixed target experiments. In either case, safety of operation is a very important issue that needs to be carefully addressed. This paper presents detailed numerical simulations of the thermodynamic and hydrodynamic response of solid targets made of copper and tungsten that experience impact of a full SPS beam comprized of 288 bunches of 450 GeV/c protons. These simulations have shown that the material will be seriously damaged if such an accident happens. An interesting outcome of this work is that the SPS can be used to carry out dedicated experiments to study High Energy Density (HED) states in matter.
