Abstract:Short-scale interactions yield large-scale vegetation patterns that, in turn, shape ecosystem function across landscapes. Fairy circles, which are circular patches bare of vegetation within otherwise continuous landscapes, are characteristic features of semiarid grasslands. We report the occurrence of submarine fairy circle seascapes in seagrass meadows and propose a simple model that reproduces the diversity of seascapes observed in these ecosystems as emerging from plant interactions within the meadow. These seascapes include two extreme cases, a continuous meadow and a bare landscape, along with intermediate states that range from the occurrence of persistent but isolated fairy circles, or solitons, to seascapes with multiple fairy circles, banded vegetation, and "leopard skin" patterns consisting of bare seascapes patterns consisting of bare seascapes dotted with plant patches. The model predicts that these intermediate seascapes extending across kilometers emerge as a consequence of local demographic imbalances along with facilitative and competitive interactions among the plants with a characteristic spatial scale of 20 to 30 m, consistent with known drivers of seagrass performance. The model, which can be extended to clonal growth plants in other landscapes showing fairy rings, reveals that the different seascapes observed hold diagnostic power as to the proximity of seagrass meadows to extinction points that can be used to identify ecosystems at risks.
Self-organized Mud Cracking Amplifies the Resilience of an Iconic “red Beach” Salt Marsh

Abstract:Self-organized patterning, resulting from the interplay of biological and physical processes, is widespread in nature. Studies have suggested that biologically triggered self-organization can amplify ecosystem resilience. However, if purely physical forms of self-organization play a similar role remains unknown. Desiccation soil cracking is a typical physical form of self-organization in coastal salt marshes and other ecosystems. Here, we show that physically self-organized mud cracking was an important facilitating process for the establishment of seepweeds in a “Red Beach” salt marsh in China. Transient mud cracks can promote plant survivorship by trapping seeds, and enhance germination and growth by increasing water infiltration in the soil, thus facilitating the formation of a persistent salt marsh landscape. Cracks can help the salt marsh withstand more intense droughts, leading to postponed collapse and faster recovery. These are indications of enhanced resilience. Our work highlights that self-organized landscapes sculpted by physical agents can play a critical role in ecosystem dynamics and resilience to climate change.

Abstract:The fairy circle patterns observed in arid or semiarid areas are referred as ecological miracle, and the formation mechanisms of these beautiful landscape have triggered a protracted debate across disciplines. Nonetheless, the types of fairy circles and their robustness are not fully understood. In this work, we studied a vegetation–water model and discovered two types of pattern structures, namely transient and persistent fairy circles. We found that the transient fairy circle is more favorable to vegetation growth than the persistent one through theoretical analysis and numerical calculations. Additionally, the transient fairy circle can serve as an early warning signal of environmental degradation. The obtained results systematically distinguish between transient and persistent patterns, and demonstrate how well pattern structures are connected to ecosystem functions.

Abstract:Fairy circles (FC) are a type of spatial self-organized patterns that widely exist in various vegetation ecosystems and the accurate detection and quantitative characterization of these mysterious circles remain a technical challenge. In this study, vegetation FC in intertidal salt marshes are recognized from the derived reflectance information (backscattered intensity) and geometric quantities of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) carried on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The specular effect on the UAV LiDAR intensity data over nadir regions of wet salt marshes is eliminated using the laser radar equation and Phong model where the absent distances and incidence angles are approximately retrieved on the basis of geometric and temporal relations in data collection. The FC are progressively recovered through three interconnected procedures. First, the retrieved reflectance information is used to discriminate the mudflat and vegetation points. Second, a spatial connectivity clustering algorithm is utilized on the extracted vegetation points to form individual spatially disconnected clusters. Finally, FC and regular vegetation are successfully recognized by jointly using the salient, size, and circularity features of the generated clusters. A multi-echo UAV LiDAR system is used for data collection at an intertidal salt marsh to assess the feasibility and prospects of the proposed method. Taking the manual detection results from the orthophoto generated by images of a UAV camera system as a reference, the missing detection rate, false detection rate, and area detection error of the proposed method are 6%, 9%, and 5%, respectively. Results suggest that UAV LiDAR is an extremely promising technique to characterize the geometric properties (e.g., location, size, and quantity) of FC from a holistic perspective.

Abstract:Large responses of ecosystems to small changes in the conditions--regime shifts--are of great interest and importance. In spatially extended ecosystems, these shifts may be local or global. Using empirical data and mathematical modeling, we investigated the dynamics of the Namibian fairy circle ecosystem as a case study of regime shifts in a pattern-forming ecosystem. Our results provide new support, based on the dynamics of the ecosystem, for the view of fairy circles as a self-organization phenomenon driven by water-vegetation interactions. The study further suggests that fairy circle birth and death processes correspond to spatially confined transitions between alternative stable states. Cascades of such transitions, possible in various pattern-forming systems, result in gradual rather than abrupt regime shifts.

Abstract:Salt marshes have ecological and economic value, but shoreline development, the increasing rate of sea-level rise, and other human impacts have caused significant loss of salt marshes. As a result, restoration of these ecosystems is widespread. For restoration and management to be effective, it is imperative to improve our understanding of marsh-building plants that serve as the ecological foundation of these habitats. Given the observed differences in characteristics between populations of smooth cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora , restoration plantings may impact the biodiversity and resilience of restored ecosystems. Understanding differences in the structural and functional outcomes of active planting of restoration sites will enable the long-term success of restoration efforts to be improved. Natural and restored salt marshes in Long Island Sound were studied in 2021–2022 for S. alterniflora genetics, biomass, stem morphology, and faunal community composition. The average genotypic diversity of S. alterniflora was more than 4 times higher in restored than in natural marshes, and differentiation between each restored site and natural sites decreased with time. No difference was observed in live S. alterniflora belowground biomass; however, mean dead belowground biomass in natural marshes was more than 3 times greater than in restored marshes. Marsh platform invertebrates differed between the restored and natural sites, with natural marsh edge habitats having 9 times higher density of Geukensia demissa and 3 times as many crab burrows than in restored marshes, but there was no detected difference in species richness or abundance of nekton at high tide. With restoration practitioners seeking resilient, self-sustaining ecosystems, it is important to evaluate whether restored marsh characteristics are consistent with those goals and modify restoration planning accordingly to incorporate genetics, structure, and function.

Abstract:Facilitation cascades are chains of positive interactions that occur as frequently as trophic cascades and are equally important drivers of ecosystem function, where they involve the overlap of primary and secondary, or dependent, habitat-forming foundation species [1]. Although it is well recognized that the size and configuration of secondary foundation species' patches are critical features modulating the ecological effects of facilitation cascades [2], the mechanisms governing their spatial distribution are often challenging to discern given that they operate across multiple spatial and temporal scales [1, 3]. We therefore combined regional surveys of southeastern US salt marsh geomorphology and invertebrate communities with a predator exclusion experiment to elucidate the drivers, both geomorphic and biotic, controlling the establishment, persistence, and ecosystem functioning impacts of a regionally abundant facilitation cascade involving habitat-forming marsh cordgrass and aggregations of ribbed mussels. We discovered a hierarchy of physical and biological factors predictably controlling the strength and self-organization of this facilitation cascade across creekshed, landscape, and patch scales. These results significantly enhance our capacity to spatially predict coastal ecosystem function across scales based on easily identifiable metrics of geomorphology that are mechanistically linked to ecological processes. Replication of this approach across vegetated coastal ecosystems has the potential to support management efforts by elucidating the multi-scale linkages between geomorphology and ecology that, in turn, define spatially explicit patterns in community assembly and ecosystem functioning.

Abstract:Theory of self-organization, i.e., scale-dependent feedback (SDF), has been widely used to explain mechanisms of spatial patterns in different ecosystems. Studies have demonstrated that self-organization is one of the mechanisms through which ecosystem resilience is maintained. However, the application of SDF in real ecological restoration practices is a challenge due to the lack of a controlled experimental validation. In the present study, multiple scales of vegetation patches were constructed along an elevation gradient in the saltmarsh ecosystem on Nanhui coasts and were investigated to verify if there was an effect of SDF. Results of the density-variation curves analyses revealed that most constructed self-organized patches could survive and an optimal curve was found of which the density-dependent feedback was proven through fitting with the asymptotic regression model. The large vegetation patches exhibited considerable increases in density when compared to the small vegetation patches, which occurred in challenging environments, i.e., on the verges of elevation thresholds, and with a tendency to shrink. Analyses using one-way ANOVA revealed that there was an optimal patch scale and elevation in the study area, i.e., 1 m × 1 m scale and 3.2 m, respectively. Optimal scale and elevation provide a comprehensively explanations of SDF, although with the positive effects gradually decreased along the distance away from the optimal condition. The present study provides novel insights on applying the theory of SDF in facilitating the restoration process of coastal saltmarshes.
Fungi drive soil multifunctionality in the coastal salt marsh ecosystem

Abstract:Salt marshes are highly productive intertidal wetlands located in temperate climatic zones, in which marine-to-terrestrial transition significantly influences microbial life. Numerous studies revealed the important coupling relationship between microbial diversity and ecosystem functions in terrestrial ecosystems, however, the importance of microbial diversity in maintaining soil functions in coastal ecosystems remains poorly understood. Here, we studied the shifts of microbial communities and soil multifunctionality (SMF; nine functions related with C, N and P cycling) along a vegetation gradient in a salt marsh ecosystem and investigated the microbial diversity - ecosystem function relationship. The aboveground vegetation shifted from mud flat (MF) to Scirpus triqueter (SM) and then Phragmites australis (PA) with increasing distance away from the sea. Average approach showed that the SMF was much higher in halophytes covered zones including SM and PA than in MF. Structural equation model (SEM) analysis confirmed that vegetation was an important predictor on SMF besides moisture and organic carbon. Linear regression and multiple threshold methods showed that in MF and SM zones, fungal rather than bacterial richness was significantly and positively correlated with SMF, while in the PA zone microbial diversity did not relate with SMF. Random forest analysis identified several Ascomycota taxa with preference over marine environment as strong predictors of SMF. Taken together, our study lays the basis for a better understanding on the relationships between belowground microbial diversity and soil functions in coastal ecosystems.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands are the most productive ecosystems worldwide and can provide important ecosystem services, yet the characteristics of microbial community within these systems remain poorly understood. Microbial community of salt marsh vegetation and the associated soil physio-chemical properties were investigated in this study. Three typical Suaeda australis, Phragmites australis, Spartina alterniflora wetlands, and non-vegetated bare mudflats in the Zhoushan Islands were studied to advance the understanding of the characteristics of soil bacterial communities in coastal wetlands. Results showed that the bare mudflats exhibited high pH value and soil moisture content compared with the vegetated samples. In different vegetation types, the organic matter content, total nitrogen, and total potassium content decreased in the order: S. alterniflora wetland > P. australis wetland > S. australis wetland, and there was no obvious difference in total phosphorous content. The halophytes could decrease soil salinity compared with bare mudflats. Proteobacteria, Nitrospinae, Bacteroidetes, Acidobacteria, and Nitrospirae were the predominant level across all samples. Functional prediction showed that SPA-covered soil might play vital roles in sulphur cycling, while SUA and PHR covered soils were involved in nitrogen cycling. This study could provide the first insight into the microbial community of this study area and contribute to a better understanding of vegetation microbiota and bioremediation in coastal wetland ecosystem.

Abstract:Self-organized spatial patterns are increasingly recognized for their contribution to ecosystem functioning, in terms of enhanced productivity, ecosystem stability, and species diversity in terrestrial as well as marine ecosystems. Most studies on the impact of spatial self-organization have focused on systems that exhibit regular patterns. However, there is an abundance of patterns in many ecosystems which are not strictly regular. Understanding of how these patterns are formed and how they affect ecosystem function is crucial for the broad acceptance of self-organization as a keystone process in ecological theory. Here, using transplantation experiments in salt marsh ecosystems dominated by Scirpus mariqueter , we demonstrate that scale-dependent feedback is driving irregular spatial pattern formation of vegetation. Field observations and experiments have revealed that this self-organization process affects a range of plant traits, including shoot-to-root ratio, rhizome orientation, rhizome node number, and rhizome length, and enhances vegetation productivity. Moreover, patchiness in self-organized salt marsh vegetation can support a better microhabitat for macrobenthos, promoting their total abundance and spatial heterogeneity of species richness. Our results extend existing concepts of self-organization and its effects on productivity and biodiversity to the spatial irregular patterns that are observed in many systems. Our work also helps to link between the so-far largely unconnected fields of self-organization theory and trait-based, functional ecology.
Sea-level rise versus salt marsh colonization: The adversarial game of self-organized elevation maintenance in tidal marsh

Abstract:Tidal marshes globally face escalating threats from rising sea levels. As critical determinants of tidal marsh platform elevation maintenance, the contributions of marsh soil compaction and subsidence (SCS) are often overshadowed by vertical accretion (VA). Here, we reveal the pervasive presence of the SCS within tidal marshes and its driving forces. Our results demonstrate that while vegetated regions can organize more efficient sediment accumulation, thereby promoting marsh elevation rise, they also contribute to an increase in SCS occurrences, which somewhat hinders marsh elevation growth. Through the established empirical model of SCS, we found that the amount of SCS in the investigated marshes with vegetation cover is twice that of marshes without vegetation. Therefore, from the perspective of SCS, it is imperative to account for the detrimental impact of vegetation on marsh elevation, as we have uncovered that this oversight may lead to an underestimation of the vulnerability of the investigated tidal marsh ecosystem by approximately 13.55 %. We also find that the adversarial game between vegetation colonization and sea-level rise governs the SCS in the self-organization of tidal marshes, but the intensifying inundation from sea-level rise ultimately determines the fate of the SCS. Our study emphasizes the crucial role of the game between sea-level rise and vegetation colonization in the self-organized elevation maintenance of tidal marshes.
Saltmarsh Plants Respond to Various Hydrodynamic and Sedimentary Disturbances by Modifying Their Morphological Strategies in Both Aboveground and Belowground Parts

Abstract:To ensure the long-term stability of the valuable saltmarsh ecosystem, a comprehensive understanding of saltmarsh plant responses to strong tidal stress is essential. We investigated the effects of sedimentation dynamics and hydrodynamics on saltmarsh morphological traits and biomass allocation during growing seasons in the Yangtze Estuary. Our results showed that: (1) Individuals colonized at the seaward edge of saltmarsh were subjected to stronger hydrodynamic and sediment dynamic disturbance than those at the inner saltmarsh. Specifically, the average water depth, effective wave height, current velocity, bed shear stress and suspended sediment concentration at the low saltmarsh were 4.8, 9, 5.8, 4, 1.78 times higher than that at the inner saltmarsh, respectively. Thus, individuals at the seaward edge of saltmarsh were more resilient. (2) At early and middle growth stages, both aboveground and belowground plant traits showed significantly different growth patterns. (3) Lastly, the shoot/root rate differs significantly between seaward and landward edges, indicating that the optimal allocation of Scirpus mariqueter biomass was approached to cope with external stresses from waves and sediments. We concluded that this phenotypic plasticity of plant traits was a response to the heterogeneity of tidal flat sedimentation processes and increased plants tolerance to the changing environment. These findings may help in developing an appropriate saltmarsh rehabilitation strategy to address the stressors such as hydrodynamics and sedimentation dynamics.
Enhancement of lateral connectivity promotes the establishment of plants in saltmarshes

Abstract:Several studies have shown that enhancing lateral hydrological connectivity in river systems can increase the exchange of materials and energy, and improves species diversity, which suggests that it might be a useful ecological restoration tool. The variation in elevation gradient across a saltmarsh system is small, which means that lateral hydrological connectivity in saltmarsh systems is often ignored and the ecological effects caused by the variation in lateral hydrological connectivity are seldom studied. Lateral hydrological connectivity presents when a hydrological connection between marsh plain and tidal creek occurs, as a time interval during which tidal flow occurred. This study explored the effects of enhancing lateral hydrological connectivity on the plant life history process using empirical studies. The enhancement of lateral hydrological connectivity on a temporal scale was achieved by placing hollowed microtopographic structures on the marsh. Data obtained through the high-frequency monitoring of tidal levels was used to calculate lateral hydrological connectivity enhancement, and field control experiments were used to determine the effects of lateral connectivity enhancement on seed retention, emergence, and seedling survival at each life stage. The results showed that lateral hydrological connectivity decreased with the increasing distance to sea and the lateral distance to tidal creek. The hollowed microtopographic structures significantly enhanced lateral hydrological connectivity on the marsh, increased soil moisture content, and reduced soil salinity. Furthermore, seed retention time was significantly increased during dispersal stage, and potential seed establishment was improved. During the emergence and growth stages, the enhanced soil moisture and reduced salinity facilitated the emergence and growth of seeds and seedlings. These effects benefit plant re-establishment in bare areas, especially in areas with low lateral hydrological connectivity. This information could be used to improve the restoration or recovery of vegetation on bare or degraded saltmarshes.

Abstract:Habitat fragmentaion into small patches is regarded as a vital cause of biodiversity loss. Fragmentationof habitat-forming species is especially harmful, as patchiness of such species often controls ecosystem stability and resilience by density and patch size-dependent self-reinforcing feedbacks. Although fragmentation are expected to weaken or even break such feedbacks, it remains unclear how the resulting patchiness of habitat-forming species affect ecosystem resilience to environmental stresses. Here, using Spartian alterniflora, the habitat-forming species in saltmarshes as a model, we investigate how patch size, plant density, and shell aggregation interactively control the persistence of a degrading salt marsh that suffered from erosion induced by hydrodynamics. Our results demonstrate that large patches can trap more shells along the patch edge than the smaller ones, therefore significantly facilitating plant re-growth within the patch. Shell removal experiments further reveal that large patches trapping more shells along patch edges reinforce their own persistence by decreasing erosion and thus facilitating plant recovery. By contrast, small patches with lesser plants cannot persist as they trap less shells along patch edges but are able to accumulate more shells at interior locations where they hinder plant re-growth, indicating a critical threshold of patch size ~20 m2 below which ecosystem collapses. The current study highlights the importance to identify critical threshold of stress-resistant patch sizes in transition-prone ecosystems as early-warning to alert undesired ecosystem collapse and restoration practice.
Hydrodynamic modeling study of nature-based hybrid coastal defense strategy applied in salt marsh restoration

Abstract:In open coasts with high wave and tidal energy, the creation of salt marsh wetlands presents significant challenges. Combining artificial structures with salt marshes is a novel hybrid coastal protection strategy. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether this method will facilitate salt marsh restoration and if the integrated protection system will effectively dissipate waves. This study is based on the salt marsh restoration (SMR) project in Jiangsu Province, China, which aims to restore salt marsh wetlands and enhance overall hazard reduction by constructing submerged dikes nearshore to create an ideal dynamic environment. In this study, the free-surface flow modeling system TELEMAC was used to simulate the wave, hydrodynamic, and sediment processes. Based on the hydrodynamic modeling, we used the Window of Opportunity (WoO) model to predict the seedling establishment after the implementation of SMR. In addition, we quantified the wave attenuation effect of salt marsh vegetation and submerged dikes. The results demonstrate that submerged dikes with appropriate crest elevations are advantageous for SMR, and the combination of submerged dikes and salt marsh vegetation substantially enhances wave attenuation. This study quantifies the impact of a novel hybrid coastal protection strategy, which contributes to the synergistic development of SMR and the reduction of coastal hazards.

Abstract:<p>In salt marshes, abiotic factors, interspecific competition or facilitation, and herbivory have been discussed extensively as important drivers of marsh plant distribution patterns. However, the relative importance of various regeneration processes across stress gradients received little attention, despite their importance in explaining plant community dynamics. In this study, we built a stage-structured plant assembly model to study how the influence of each regeneration process on plant assembly dynamics varies with environmental stress level, plant succession stage and initial seed availability, in a salt marsh in Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve in China. We found plant assembly at higher saline conditions is mainly governed by stress tolerance regardless of the stage of succession and initial seed availability, as salinity stress can suppress biomass accumulation and propagule production of salt intolerant species. Under less saline conditions with high seed availability, juvenile competition plays the most important role throughout succession. When initial seed availability is low, dispersal is more important at the beginning, but juvenile competition is more important at later stage and determines the plant competition outcomes. Our findings imply seed availability is important in determining plant succession trajectories under less stressful conditions, and should be given more attention during restoration management in coastal marshes.</p>

Abstract:Coastal saltmarshes are key ecosystems with important ecological functions. Yet, they have experienced a widespread decline. Due to their importance, the conservation and restoration of saltmarshes are globally shared objectives, including China. Despite multiple local studies, nationwide information about saltmarshes in China is scarce. Thus, we used remote sensing to delineate the spatial distribution and areal extent of saltmarshes along coastal China and resolve their species composition. By interpreting 10 m spatial resolution Sentinel-2 images on Google Earth Engine, assisted with field survey and literature search, a total of 118 010 ha of saltmarshes were delineated in coastal China in 2019. Seven typical saltmarsh species were identified, with Phragmites australis, Spartina alterniflora, and Scirpus mariquater as dominant species, accounting for 95.5% of total saltmarsh extent, while Suaeda salsa, Tamarix chinensis, Cyperus malaccensis, and Sesuvium portulacastrum were present in limited abundance. The P. australis and exotic species S. alterniflora grow along almost all coastal provinces, but P. australis dominates in the north while S. alterniflora dominates in the middle part of coastal China. Suaeda salsa occurs mainly in the north and has suffered large losses. Tamarix chinensis is abundant in Shandong province, S. mariquater in the Yangtze River delta, C. malaccensis in Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, and S. portulacastrum in Taiwan. The exotic species S. alterniflora expanded extensively along the coast and its expansion rate continues to increase. The results provided conform a much-needed baseline for future monitoring efforts and the assessmen- of progress in the conservation and restoration projects toward recovering saltmarshes in China.
