Abstract:The body possesses remarkably efficient mechanisms for sterilizing the blood stream. Contrary to popular belief, most microorganisms are less capable of provoking disease when injected intravenouslty than when admi'nistered by an'y other route (1, 2). With rare exceptions, living bacteria which enter the blood stream of animals or man disappear swiftly from the circulation. In the 73 years which have elapsed since the initial observations of Wyssokowitsch (3), the events which follow intravascular injections of bacteria have received extensive investigation. Studies on the intravascular behavior of different microorganisms or particulate substances which may mimic bacteria in their initial host management in the circulation have aided in clarifying certain aspects of the blood stream clearance process. Although bacteremia can be profoundly modified by humoral immunity, initial host mechanisms acting to clear the blood stream are probably not dependent on prior experience with the invading microorganism. It is thus proper that the ways in which animals and man handle bacteria which enter the blood stream be included in this symposium on nonspecific host resistance. It is the purpose of this paper to review what is known of the dynamics of blood stream clearance, the host tissues which participate in the removal of circulating microorganisms, the fate of bacteria lodged in organs which retain them, and the circumstances which may augment, or interfere with, host mechanisms dealing with bacteria which invade the blood stream.
Saltmarsh Plants Respond to Various Hydrodynamic and Sedimentary Disturbances by Modifying Their Morphological Strategies in Both Aboveground and Belowground Parts

Abstract:To ensure the long-term stability of the valuable saltmarsh ecosystem, a comprehensive understanding of saltmarsh plant responses to strong tidal stress is essential. We investigated the effects of sedimentation dynamics and hydrodynamics on saltmarsh morphological traits and biomass allocation during growing seasons in the Yangtze Estuary. Our results showed that: (1) Individuals colonized at the seaward edge of saltmarsh were subjected to stronger hydrodynamic and sediment dynamic disturbance than those at the inner saltmarsh. Specifically, the average water depth, effective wave height, current velocity, bed shear stress and suspended sediment concentration at the low saltmarsh were 4.8, 9, 5.8, 4, 1.78 times higher than that at the inner saltmarsh, respectively. Thus, individuals at the seaward edge of saltmarsh were more resilient. (2) At early and middle growth stages, both aboveground and belowground plant traits showed significantly different growth patterns. (3) Lastly, the shoot/root rate differs significantly between seaward and landward edges, indicating that the optimal allocation of Scirpus mariqueter biomass was approached to cope with external stresses from waves and sediments. We concluded that this phenotypic plasticity of plant traits was a response to the heterogeneity of tidal flat sedimentation processes and increased plants tolerance to the changing environment. These findings may help in developing an appropriate saltmarsh rehabilitation strategy to address the stressors such as hydrodynamics and sedimentation dynamics.
Responses of eastern Chinese coastal salt marshes to sea-level rise combined with vegetative and sedimentary processes

Abstract:The impacts of sea-level rise (SLR) on coastal ecosystems have attracted worldwide attention in relation to global change. In this study, the salt marsh model for the Yangtze Estuary (SMM-YE, developed in China) and the Sea Level Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM, developed in the U.S.) were used to simulate the effects of SLR on the coastal salt marshes in eastern China. The changes in the dominant species in the plant community were also considered. Predictions based on the SLAMM indicated a trend of habitat degradation up to 2100; total salt marsh habitat area continued to decline (4–16%) based on the low-level scenario, with greater losses (6–25%) predicted under the high-level scenario. The SMM-YE showed that the salt marshes could be resilient to threats of SLR through the processes of accretion of mudflats, vegetation expansion and sediment trapping by plants. This model predicted that salt marsh areas increased (3–6%) under the low-level scenario. The decrease in the total habitat area with the SMM-YE under the high-level scenario was much lower than the SLAMM prediction. Nevertheless, SLR might negatively affect the salt marsh species that are not adapted to prolonged inundation. An adaptive strategy for responding to changes in sediment resources is necessary in the Yangtze Estuary.

Abstract:The phase state of a series of poly(n-octadecyl methacrylate)-b-poly(tert-butyl acrylate)-b-poly(n-octadecyl methacrylate) (pODMA-b-ptBA-b-pODMA) triblock copolymers, synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization, has been investigated in bulk and on surfaces using small-angle X-ray scattering and atomic force microscopy, respectively. The mean-field theory was employed to construct the bulk phase diagram. Excellent agreement was found between the bulk and surface morphologies as well as for the domain spacing (domain spacing scaled as d approximately equal to N(0.64)), suggesting that the strong polymer-polymer interactions in bulk are also the dominant interactions on surfaces.
The impact of the change in vegetation structure on the ecological functions of salt marshes: the example of the Yangtze estuary

Abstract:Salt marshes worldwide are faced with threats from rising sea levels and coastal development. We measured changes in salt marsh vegetation structure using remote sensing and its consequences for carbon sequestration, wave attenuation, and sediment trapping ability using remotely sensed imaging, field measurement data, and the published literature data pertaining to the Yangtze Estuary, a rapidly urbanizing area in Eastern China. From 1980 to 2010, the total area of vegetated salt marsh decreased by 17 %, but the vegetation structure changed more dramatically, with the ratio of Phragmites/Spartina/Scirpus changing from 24:0:76, to 77:0:23, 44:13:43, and 33:39:28 in 1980, 1990, 2000, and 2010, respectively. Carbon sequestration increased slightly from 1980 to 2010, with the dramatic shifts in plant species composition. The total length of seawall inadequately protected by salt marsh vegetation increased from 44 km in 1980 to 300 km in 2010. Sediment accretion increased (from 8 to 14 million m3/year) due to the spread of Spartina, which to some extent compensated the loss of total vegetated area in the salt marsh. Changes in the delivery of functions were not linearly related to the change in the area of vegetated salt marsh, but more from the combined effect of changing vegetation structure, sediment input, and land reclamation. Under threat of sea-level rise, protection and maintenance of vegetation structure outside the seawall are of great importance for the safe economic development inside the seawall.

Abstract:Coastal saltwater intrusion (SWI) is one key factor that affects the hydrology, ecology, and biogeochemistry of coastal ecosystems. Future climate change, especially intensified sea level rise (SLR), is expected to trigger SWI to encroach coastal freshwater aquifers more intensively. Numerous studies have investigated decadal/century scale SWI under SLR by assuming a static coastal landscape topography. However, coastal landscapes are highly dynamic in response to SLR, and the impact of coastal landscape evolution on SWI has received very little attention. Thus, this study used a coastal marsh landscape as an example and investigated how coastal marsh evolution affects future SWI with a physically‐based coastal hydro‐eco‐geomorphologic model, ATS (Advanced Terrestrial Simulator). Our numerical experiments showed that it is very likely that the marsh elevation increases with future SLR due to sediment deposition, and a depression zone is formed due to different marsh accretion rates between the ocean boundary and the inland. We found that marsh accretion may significantly reduce the surface saltwater inflow at the ocean boundary, and the evolved topographic depression zone may prolong the residence time of surface ponded saltwater, affecting subsurface salinity distribution differently. We also predicted that marshlands may become more sensitive to upland freshwater supply under future SLR, compared with previous predictions without marsh evolution. This study demonstrates the importance of coastal evolution to coastal freshwater‐saltwater interaction. The eco‐geomorphologic effect may not be ignored when evaluating coastal SWI under SLR at decadal or century scales. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Long‐term Monitoring of Coupled Vegetation and Elevation Changes in Response to Sea Level Rise in a Microtidal Salt Marsh

Abstract:Tight interplays between physical and biotic processes in tidal salt marshes lead to self‐organization of halophytic vegetation into recurrent zonation patterns developed across elevation gradients. Despite its importance for marsh ecomorphodynamics, however, the response of vegetation zonation to changing environmental forcings remains difficult to predict, mostly because of lacking long‐term field observations of vegetation evolution in the face of changing rates of sea levels and marsh vertical accretion. Here we present novel data of coupled marsh elevation‐vegetation distribution collected in the microtidal Venice Lagoon (Italy) over nearly two decades. Our results suggest that: i) despite increasing absolute marsh elevation (i.e., above a fixed datum), vertical accretion rates across most of the studied marsh were not high enough to compensate for relative sea‐level rise (RSLR), thus leading to a progressive marsh drowning; ii) accretion rates ranging 1.7 ‐ 4.3 mm/year are overall lower than the measured RSLR rate (4.4 mm/year) and strongly site‐specific. Accretion rates vary largely at sites within distances of a few tens of meters, being controlled by local elevation and sediment availability from eroding marsh edges; iii) vegetation responds species‐specifically to changes in environmental forcings by modifying species‐preferential elevation ranges. For the first time, we observe the consistency of a sequential vegetation‐species zonation with increasing marsh elevations over 20 years. We suggest this is the signature of vegetation resilience to changes in external forcings. Our results highlight a strong coupling between geomorphological and ecological dynamics and call for spatially‐distributed marsh monitoring and spatially‐explicit biomorphodynamic models of marsh evolution.

Abstract:Salt marshes act as natural barriers that reduce wave energy during storm events and help protect coastal communities located in low-lying areas. This ecosystem can be an important asset for climate adaptation due to its particular capability of vertically accrete to adjust to long-term changes in water levels. Therefore, understanding marsh protection benefits thresholds in the face of sea-level rise (SLR) is important for planning future climate adaptation. In this context, the main goal of this manuscript is to examine how the storm protection benefits provided by salt marshes might evolve under SLR projections with different probability levels and emission pathways. In this study, a modeling framework that employs marsh migration predictions from the Sea Level Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM) as parameterization into a hydrodynamic and wave model (ADCIRC + SWAN) was utilized to explicitly represent wave attenuation by vegetation under storm surge conditions. SLAMM predictions indicate that the SLR scenario, a combination of probability level and emission pathways, plays a substantial role in determining future marsh migration or marsh area loss. For example, results based on the 50% probability, stabilized emissions scenario show an increase of 45% in the marsh area on Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore by 2100, whereas Dorchester County alone could experience a 75% reduction in total salt marsh areas by 2100 under the 1% probability, growing emissions scenario. ADCIRC + SWAN results using SLAMM land cover and elevation outputs indicate that distinct temporal thresholds emerge where marsh extent sharply decreases and wave heights increase, especially after 2050, and exacerbates further after 2080. These findings can be utilized for guiding environmental policies and to aid informed decisions and actions in response to SLR-driven environmental changes.

Impact of land-use change on salt marsh accretion

Abstract:Salt marsh vertical accretion that keeps pace with relative sea-level rise (RSLR) promotes habitat resilience and a continuously growing carbon stock. Vertical accretion, however, hinges on various salt marsh biogeomorphic feedback loops that respond to changing sediment supply, storms events, accelerating RSLR, elevation, and vegetation density. During the latter half of the 20th century, a large proportion of watersheds on the lower coastal plain of North America experienced land cover change. Many salt marshes show slow rates of vertical accretion over that period suggesting degradation and destabilization attributed to reduced upstream sediment loads and changing proportions of mineral sediment to organic matter. Here, we investigated a potential dichotomy observed at many sites in coastal North America between previously published accretion rates of the subtidal bay bottoms and adjacent salt marshes that were exceeding and lagging behind RSLR since 1950 CE, respectively. In 12 small coastal watersheds that formed within tributary and coastal prism incised valleys, we coupled 210Pb-derived accumulation rates of fringing salt marshes and previously published data from adjacent tidal creek bay bottoms with geospatial analysis of watershed land cover change since 1959, inundation duration, and vegetation density. Accumulation rates were higher at marsh sites within tributary incised valleys with lower relief watersheds, smaller tidal ranges, shorter inundation times, higher vegetation densities, and where land cover changes were dominated by increased cleared forest area. Additionally, mass accumulation rates (MAR) accelerated at 8 of the 12 marsh sites after a Major Land Cover Change (MLCC). Despite this acceleration in MAR, only 2 marsh sites recorded average sediment accumulation rates (SAR) greater than RSLR after a MLCC, which suggests that most of the marsh sites are drowning or being converted to subtidal habitat. This may be misleading, however, because modern marsh platform elevations at all but one marsh site were above local mean sea level, so the marshes could be accommodation limited. This work supports the disconnect found in previous research suggesting that estuaries are accumulating sediment at sustainable rates while their fringing salt marshes are not, which illuminates the complexities associated with sedimentation regimes in small local watersheds and their fringing salt marshes.

Abstract:Accelerating sea-level rise and decreasing riverine sediment supply are widely considered to lead to global losses of deltaic marshes and their valuable ecosystem services. However, little is known about the degree to which the related erosion of the seaward delta front can provide sediments to sustain salt marshes. Here, we present data from the mesomacrotidal Yangtze Delta demonstrating that marshes have continued to accrete vertically and laterally, despite rapid relative sea-level rise (similar to 10 mm yr(-1)) and a > 70% decrease in the Yangtze River sediment supply. Marsh progradation has decelerated at a lower rate than fluvial sediment reduction, suggesting an additional source of sediment. We find that under favorable conditions (e.g., a mesomacrotidal range, strong tidal flow, flood dominance, sedimentary settling lag/scour lag effects, and increasing high-tide level), delta-front erosion can actually supply sediment to marshes, thereby maintaining marsh accretion rates in balance with relative sea-level rise. Comparison of global deltas illustrates that the ability of sediment remobilization to sustain marshes depends on coastal processes and varies by more than an order of magnitude among the world's major deltas.
Controls on the Height of Marsh-Edge Cliff Formation: an Exploratory Model

Abstract:Salt marshes, serving as crucial ecosystems and carbon repositories, are currently under threat from climate change and anthropogenic activities. The formation and retreat of marsh-edge cliffs represent a major mechanism of marshland degradation and subsequent release of sequestered organic carbon. The volume of coastal erosion is determined by the product of cliff height and retreat rate; however, the factors governing cliff height remain elusive. In this study, we introduce an idealized process-based model to investigate the initial formation of marsh-edge cliffs and examine how cliff height responds to tidal range, sediment supply, and marsh bed erodibility. The results suggest that cliff height is primarily controlled by the tidal range, showing a strong positive correlation. An increase of 1 m in the tidal range corresponds to a rise of 0.2-0.3 m in cliff height. This is because, in macro-tidal flats, the elevation range suitable for marsh growth is broader, trapping muddy sediments within the marshes, which eventually leads to the formation of taller marsh-edge cliffs. The mud concentration at the open boundary (i.e., sediment supply) has limited impact. Additionally, an increase in marsh bed erodibility can modestly reduce cliff height. This model offers a basis for predicting marsh-edge cliff heights in the face of future environmental changes. Contrary to previous studies suggesting larger tidal ranges support salt marsh sustainability by fostering sediment deposition on the marshes to balance sea level rise, they could, in fact, elevate cliff heights, thus may accelerating erosion and increasing erosion volume. Consequently, the formation and retreat of marsh-edge cliffs demand significant focus for the conservation of meso- and macro-tidal coastal marshes.
Sea Level Rise Impacts to Coastal Marshes may be Ameliorated by Natural Sedimentation Events

Abstract:Coastal wetland sustainability in the future will likely depend on the extent to which increases in sea level drive flooding duration, plant submergence, and higher salinities, and how wetlands respond to these changes. Coastal wetlands will need to grow vertically to cope with rising seas, and sedimentation, often observed following hurricane passage, could play a role. A greenhouse mesocosm experiment was conducted to investigate if the impacts of sea level rise (SLR) and elevated salinity on the productivity and resilience of Spartina alterniflora marshes could be mediated by simulated hurricane sedimentation. Overall, sedimentation ameliorated the negative impacts of moderate SLR on plant productivity and resilience. Sedimentation improved growth conditions at current and moderate increases in sea level by reducing flooding duration, which in-turn, increased soil Eh, and lowered porewater sulfide. This led to greater productivity of vegetation above- and belowground and improved plant resilience. However, at the highest sea levels, inundation stress was too great for the benefits of added sediment to be realized. Thus, it is likely that the sustainability of coastal marshes will be improved by hurricane-generated sedimentation under moderate SLR scenarios, but will see no improvement with more extreme SLR.

Spatiotemporal Mapping of Salt Marshes in the Intertidal Zone of China during 1985-2019

Abstract:This study mapped the areal extent, identified the species composition, and analyzed the changes of salt marshes in the intertidal zone of China during the period 1985-2019. With the aid of the cloud platform of the Google Earth Engine, we selected Landsat 5/8 and Sentinel-2 images and used the support vector machine classification method to extract salt marsh information for the years of 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2019. Seven major species of salt marshes: Phragmites australis, Suaeda spp., Spartina alterniflora, Scirpus mariqueter, Tamarix chinensis, Cyperus malaccensis, and Sesuvium portulacastrum were identified. Our results showed that salt marshes are mainly distributed in Liaoning, Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, and Zhejiang, with varying patterns of shrinking, expansion, or wavering in different places. The distribution of salt marshes has declined considerably from 151,324 ha in 1985 to 115,397 ha in 2019, a drop of 23.7%. During the same period, the area of native species has dropped 95.4% from 77,741 ha to 3,563 ha for Suaeda spp. and 45.1% from 60,511 ha to 33,193 ha for P. australis; on the contrary, the area of exotic species, S. alterniflora, has exhibited a sharp rise from just 99 ha to 67,527 ha. For the past 35 years, the driving factors causing salt marsh changes are mainly land reclamation, variations in water and sand fluxes, and interspecific competition and succession of salt marsh vegetation. These results provide fundamental reference information and could form the scientific basis for formulating policies for the conservation and utilization of salt marsh resources in China.
Quantifying the effects of sea level rise driven marsh migration on wave attenuation

Abstract:Sea level rise (SLR) is the most significant climate change-related threat to coastal wetlands, driving major transformations in coastal regions through marsh migration. Landscape transformations due to marsh migration are manifested in terms of horizontal and vertical changes in land cover and elevation, respectively. These processes will have an impact on saltmarsh wave attenuation that is yet to be explored. This study stands as a comprehensive analysis of spatially distributed wave attenuation by vegetation in the context of a changing climate. Our results show that: i) changes in saltmarsh cover have little to no effect on the attenuation of floods, while ii) changes in elevation can significantly reduce flood extents and water depths; iii) overland wave heights are directly influenced by marsh migration, although iv) being indirectly attenuated by the water depth limiting effects of water depth attenuation driven by changes in elevation; v) the influence of saltmarsh accretion on wave attenuation is largely evident near the marsh edge, where the increasing elevations can drive major wave energy losses via wave breaking. Lastly, vi) considering the synergy between SLR, marsh migration, and changes in elevation results in significantly more wave attenuation than considering the eustatic effects of SLR and/or horizontal marsh migration alone, and therefore should be adopted in future studies.
A new perspective on the impacts of Spartina alterniflora invasion on Chinese wetlands in the context of climate change: A case study of the Jiuduansha Shoals, Yangtze Estuary

Abstract:Spartina alterniflora, an invasive plant, was introduced to the Chinese coastal zone in the early 90s. As an eco-engineering species, S. alterniflora not only alters saltmarsh species distributions, previously described as habitat degradation, but it also plays a vital role in coastal protection, especially for the development of recently emerged intertidal shoals. To provide a reference for coastal management under global change, we quantified the impact of the invasion process on provided ecological and coastal protection functions, exemplified at the emerging Jiuduansha Shoals (JDS) in the Yangtze Estuary. Results obtained by high-precision satellite monitoring and numerical modelling showed that the establishment and growth of S. alterniflora can exert considerable changes on local environment. The invasion of S. alterniflora to JDS wetland can be divided into three distinct phases, (1) establishment 1998-2003, (2) expansion 2003-2009, and (3) dominant 2009-2018 stages according to the changes in saltmarsh composition. Spatially, S. alterniflora continuously replaced Scirpus mariqueter, forcing S. mariqueter and Phragmites australis slowly to the lower and higher intertidal habitats, respectively. Notably, S. alterniflora expansion was the main driver that contributed to over 70 % of recent JDS wetland expansion even under sediment deficit conditions. Established S. alterniflora marsh (directly) dampens more waves because of aboveground stems, but it also causes more accretion and indirectly leads to higher "morphological" wave dampening. Thus, it increases coastal defense provided by the saltmarsh in the context of sea-level rise and strengthening storms. In conclusion, the role of S. alterniflora invasion to the local environment under global changes is controversial. For sustainable coastal management, we need context-dependent S. alterniflora management to maximize the benefit of coastal protection and minimize the impact on local ecology, especially in sediment-starving estuaries with expected coastline retreat.
Field Experiments and Meta-analysis Reveal Wetland Vegetation As a Crucial Element in the Coastal Protection Paradigm.

Abstract:Increasing rates of sea-level rise and wave action threaten coastal populations. Defense of shorelines by protection and restoration of wetlands has been invoked as a win-win strategy for humans and nature, yet evidence from field experiments supporting the wetland protection function is uncommon, as is the understanding of its context dependency. Here we provide evidence from field manipulations showing that the loss of wetland vegetation, regardless of disturbance size, increases the rate of erosion on wave-stressed shorelines. Vegetation removal (simulated disturbance) along the edge of salt marshes reveals that loss of wetland plants elevates the rate of lateral erosion and that extensive root systems, rather than aboveground biomass, are primarily responsible for protection against edge erosion in marshes. Meta-analysis further shows that disturbances that generate plant dieoff on salt marsh edges generally hasten edge erosion in coastal marshes and that the erosion protection function of wetlands relates more to lateral than vertical edge-erosional processes and is positively correlated with the amount of below-ground plant biomass lost. Collectively, our findings substantiate a coastal protection paradigm that incorporates preservation of shoreline vegetation, illuminate key context dependencies in this theory, and highlight local disturbances (e.g., oil spills) that kill wetland plants as agents that can accelerate coastal erosion.

Abstract:To save saltmarshes and their valuable ecosystem services from sea level rise, it is crucial to understand their natural ability to gain elevation by sediment accretion. In that context, a widely accepted paradigm is that dense vegetation favors sediment accretion and hence saltmarsh resilience to sea level rise. Here, however, we reveal how dense vegetation can inhibit sediment accretion on saltmarsh platforms. Using a process‐based modeling approach to simulate biogeomorphic development of typical saltmarsh landscapes, we identify two key mechanisms by which vegetation hinders sediment transport from tidal channels toward saltmarsh interiors. First, vegetation concentrates tidal flow and sediment transport inside channels, reducing sediment supply to platforms. Second, vegetation enhances sediment deposition near channels, limiting sediment availability for platform interiors. Our findings suggest that the resilience of saltmarshes to sea level rise may be more limited than previously thought.

Abstract:Coastal salt marshes are biogeomorphic ecosystems with coupled vegetation and hydro-sedimentary processes. A significant biogeomorphic feature with a positive loop between vegetation colonization, sedimentary accretion, and edge scarp progradation can be found in coastal marshes with a highly depositional environment, such as the Yangtze Estuary. Together with field surveys, we used a process-based salt marsh model to characterize the spatiotemporal dynamics of vegetation and geomorphology in a tidal wetland in the Yangtze Estuary from 2014 to 2019. This model incorporated interactions between biotic processes (plant growth, colonization, and hydrological resilience) and abiotic processes (tidal transport of propagules, sediment inputs, and habitat-specific sediment deposition). Comparisons with field measurements showed that the model satisfactorily described the interannual variations in vegetation growth and lateral expansion, sedimentary dynamics and elevation change, and formation of marsh-edge scarps at two investigation sites. In particular, both observation and simulation revealed that the degree of sediment supply regulated the rates of vegetation behavior and geomorphic changes. The rates of plant establishment and growth were higher at the site with high sediment supply, and a higher rate of vegetation expansion and sedimentary accretion drove a faster seaward progradation of marsh-edge scarps, compared to the site with low sediment supply. Our results indicate that the interactions between biotic and abiotic processes, together with sediment supply, strongly determine the heterogeneity of marsh biogeomorphology in a highly depositional system. Thus, there is a vast potential for application of process-based models in formulating tidal wetland management and assessing future system resilience.

Abstract:Salt marshes, which commonly exist on the upper tidal flat, provide a natural barrier against sea level rise and coastal storm. The extremely shallow water stages (water depth< 0.2 m), including the initial stage of flood tides and the last stage of ebb tides, can induce a significant impact on sediment dynamics of saltmarshes and associated tidal flats, despite lasting for only a short time (around 10 min), which has been less studied. In this study, two parallel field sites were established to quantify erosion-accretion processes and morphological changes during extremely shallow water stages in salt marshes within Doulonggang tidal flat along the Jiangsu coast. Our results revealed that obvious accretion occurred during extremely shallow water stages, with a total deposition amount of +33.8 mm in vegetated areas and +20.8 mm in unvegetated areas. In contrast, erosion dominated during deep water stages, with a total erosion amount of -22.3 mm at the vegetated site and -32.7 mm at the unvegetated site. The magnitude of bed-level change during extremely shallow water stages was 7~8 times greater than that during deep water stages, even though the duration of extremely shallow water stages was only about 14~15% of the entire tidal cycle. Furthermore, strong winds significantly impacted deposition during extremely shallow water stages compared to calm weather. During the strong wind period, the average bed level change rate reached +0.15 mm/min and +0.12 mm/min in the vegetated and unvegetated areas, respectively. This is significantly higher than the +0.05 mm/min and +0.01 mm/min during the calm weather period. These results reveal that extremely shallow water stages have substantial impacts on sedimentary processes, which are vital for the maintenance of tidal flat systems.

Abstract:The fate of soil biogenic silica (BSi) in coastal salt marshes is of global importance because of its role in providing both available silicon (Si) for the growth of plants and diatoms and in sequestering carbon (C) (blue C) in soils and sediments. However, the accumulation of BSi and BSi-occluded C (BSiOC) under different vegetation habitats in coastal ecosystems, particularly in response to relative sea-level rise (RSLR), remains poorly understood. Here we established a paired waterlogging-control system and collected the soil samples under both waterlogged and non-waterlogged conditions from three vegetation habitats (single Phragmites australis, a mixture of P. australis and Suaeda salsa, and single S. salsa) corresponding to a gradient of distance from the coastline in three independent salt marshes. Our findings indicated that RSLR decreased average BSi content, especially in the 0-20 cm soil layer of the single P. australis and the mixed P. australis and S. salsa community. Although RSLR increased soil organic C (SOC) content, it generally decreased soil BSiOC content and its contribution to SOC. Consequently, RSLR resulted in lower soil BSi and BSiOC densities, particularly in the salt marsh dominated by the Si accumulator P. australis. Here, BSi and BSiOC densities at depths of 0-80 cm decreased by an average of 19% and 18% following waterlogging, respectively. The BSi pool was dominated by phytoliths in nonwaterlogged soils, while both diatoms and phytoliths were present in soils subjected to RSLR. Soil physicochemical properties including SOC, electrical conductivity and dissolved Si were influenced by RSLR. These factors, along with erosion were suggested as key influencers for BSi and its C sequestration in coastal salt marshes. Our results provide a scientific basis for elucidating biogeochemical Si cycles and predicting changes in BSiOC sequestration to optimize its storage.
