Abstract:Cold-patching asphalt mixture (CAM) is deficient in water stability and storability despite its storable and low energy consumption. This study, after determining the ratio, the compatibility and interface interactions of modified cold-patching asphalt liquid (CAL) with addition of styrene-ethylene-butadiene-styrene copolymer (SEBS), rubber powder and basalt fibre were evaluated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to predict the optimum type. Predictions were validated using water stability tests, and long-term stability was assessed by storage stability test. Results showed that SEBS and rubber powder have better compatibility and storability with CAL compared to basalt fibre and have significant advantages in enhancing the interaction between CAL and aggregate interface. Water stability tests verified this, with SEBS giving the best results. Moreover, after storage, SEBS-modified CAM exhibits slower workability degradation, higher stability, and still improved water stability. Residual stability and freeze-thaw splitting strength ratio increased by 32.4% and 21.4%, respectively, compared to base CAM.
