Preface to Special Column on New Porous Catalytic Materials

Abstract:Over the last 15–20 years a wide range of new porous catalytic materials has been discovered in the wake of major developments in mesostructured materials and hybrid porous solids such as metal organic frameworks (MOFs). These two developments have both enormous potential to produce catalyst supports and solids. It may be argued that most existing industrial catalysts may be revisited for improvement taking advantage of the novel materials. In both cases new techniques allow controlling not only specific surface area and pore volume but even more importantly pore size distribution and therefore the diffusional properties of reactants and products. These are especially critical when dealing with large molecule reactants as frequently encountered and converting natural products. Both subfields are indeed yielding on a regular basis creative original materials which generate new catalysts, sometimes unexpectedly rejuvenating mature catalytic technologies. This special column is intended to illustrate these current efforts which for a large part are occurring in the Chinese catalysis community. The editors come from Canada and China, and the authors involve well–known researchers from Canada, Sweden, Korea, Taiwan Province and Mainland China. This column contains two review articles, one communication and seven original research articles.

A Review of Recent Developments of Mesoporous Materials

Abstract:This personal account concerns novel recent discoveries in the area of mesoporous materials. Most of the papers discussed have been published within the last two to three years. A major emphasis of most of these papers is the synthesis of unique mesoporous materials by a variety of synthetic methods. Many of these articles focus on the control of the pore sizes and shapes of mesoporous materials. Synthetic methods of various types have been used for such control of porosity including soft templating, hard templating, nano-casting, electrochemical methods, surface functionalization, and trapping of species in pores. The types of mesoporous materials range from carbon materials, metal oxides, metal sulfides, metal nitrides, carbonitriles, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and composite materials. The vast majority of recent publications have centered around biological applications with a majority dealing with drug delivery systems. Several other bio-based articles on mesoporous systems concern biomass conversion and biofuels, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, ultrasound therapy, enzyme immobilization, antigen targeting, biodegradation of inorganic materials, applications for improved digestion, and antitumor activity. Numerous nonbiological applications of mesoporous materials have been pursued recently. Some specific examples are photocatalysis, photo-electrocatalysis, lithium ion batteries, heterogeneous catalysis, extraction of metals, extraction of lanthanide and actinide species, chiral separations and catalysis, capturing and the mode of binding of carbon dioxide (CO2 ), optical devices, and magneto-optical devices. Of this latter class of applications, heterogeneous catalysis is predominant. Some of the types of catalytic reactions being pursued include hydrogen generation, selective oxidations, aminolysis, Suzuki coupling and other coupling reactions, oxygen reduction reactions (ORR), oxygen evolution reactions (OER), and bifunctional catalysis. For perspective, there have been over 40,000 articles on mesoporous materials published in the last 4 years and about 1388 reviews. By no means is this personal account thorough or all inclusive. One objective has been to choose a variety of articles of different types to obtain a flavor of the breadth of diversity involved in the area of mesoporous materials.

Abstract:The volume of research literature on catalysis and surface science has increased enormously during the last decade, and it has become impossible for any one investigator to follow all the new developments. This series on catalysis science and technology attempts to correct the problem to some extent by presenting review articles that are more than just a listing of the current literature. Volume 6 has four chapters. Chapter one is by J.B. Butt and is on the often neglected but very important area of catalyst deactivation and regeneration. The chapter starts with the fundamental chemistry side, focused on the mechanisms of poisoning and coking. Major emphasis is on the engineering side of deactivation and regeneration. Related areas of transport phenomena and reactor analysis are discussed in detail. At each step the reader is given enough information to understand the topic and prepared for the following discussion. Chapter 2 on Catalytic Olefin Polymerization reactions by I. Pasquon and U. Giannini. A short coming of this chapter is the lack of any discussion on the kinetics and modeling of polymerization reactions. Chapter 3 is on Metal Catalyzed Skeletal Reactions of Hydrocarbons on Metal Catalysts by G.L.C. Maire and F.G. Garin. This ismore » a very organized review and there are no discontinuities in subject matter. Chapter 4 is on Dispersed Metal Catalysts by K. Foger. This is an outstanding article giving the unfamiliar reader a good background on the subject matter. Advantages and disadvantages of the various preparation and characterization methods are presented to the reader in a clear and easy to understand style. Structure of supports as well as small metal crystallites are discussed in detail.« less

Abstract:Dedication to carbon: There are a tremendous number of research projects on carbon, many of which extend into different catalysis fields. The roles of carbon cover many aspects from feedstock, catalysts, catalyst supports and reaction media and it is involved in a range of reactions including organic synthesis, biomass conversion, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis and energy conversion. Carbon is the 6th element in the periodic table and the 15th most abundant element in the Earth′s crust. It is the basis of all known life, and is the second most abundant element by mass (about 18.5%) in the human body.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon The atoms of carbon can be bonded together in different ways to form carbons, such as charcoal, graphite, diamond, activated carbon, and carbon black, which have been used since the pre-historic era and are still widely used in modern industries. The later discovery of new allotropes of carbon, including fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, has triggered much multi-disciplinary research on carbon science and technology. This booming area has attracted worldwide attention, particularly in the areas of sustainable chemistry and clean energy. Carbon is a vital and multifaceted key material in the catalysis community. For homogeneous catalysis, carbon is a major component of the organic ligands surrounding a metallic center. For heterogeneous catalysis, it is well known as a support for dispersing active metals, for its “coking” that can lead to the deactivation of catalysts, or itself as an active catalyst, especially in electronic and photonic catalytic processes. Nowadays, there are a tremendous number of research projects on carbon, many of which extend into different catalysis fields. The roles of carbon cover many aspects from feedstock, catalysts, catalyst supports and reaction medium and it is involved in a range of reactions including organic synthesis, biomass conversion, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis and energy conversion. The possibility of controllable synthesis strategies for nanostructured carbons has inspired the rapid development of effective characterization methods, especially under in-situ or operando conditions. Interdisciplinary cooperation has greatly deepened our understanding of the catalysis process and accelerated the development of carbon in catalysis. This Special Issue of ChemCatChem is an attempt to break the barriers between the different catalysis communities and forge new relationships and collaborations. It highlights the versatility of carbon, and shows that the possibilities for carbon use in catalysis are endless. To meet this ambitious goal, this Special Issue provides an updated and comprehensive account of “Carbon in Catalysis” with excellent work from all around the world. It covers new approaches for the synthesis of valuable carbon compounds, and the preparation, functionalization, and characterization of nanocarbons both as supports and metal-free catalysts. Most papers introduce original research achievements with many new applications of nanostructured carbons for biomass conversion, electrocatalysis and photocatalysis for hydrogen evolution or oxygen reduction. A few excellent reviews from leading scientists summarize the most recent developments as well as provide perspectives in this field. The high scientific quality of all the articles, written by international well-known research groups, will render this special issue a good reference for future studies. Abstract:Functionalized nanoporous carbon materials have attracted the colossal interest of the materials science fraternity owing to their intriguing physical and chemical properties including a well-ordered porous structure, exemplary high specific surface areas, electronic and ionic conductivity, excellent accessibility to active sites, and enhanced mass transport and diffusion. These properties make them a special and unique choice for various applications in divergent fields such as energy storage batteries, supercapacitors, energy conversion fuel cells, adsorption/separation of bulky molecules, heterogeneous catalysts, catalyst supports, photocatalysis, carbon capture, gas storage, biomolecule detection, vapour sensing and drug delivery. Because of the anisotropic and synergistic effects arising from the heteroatom doping at the nanoscale, these novel materials show high potential especially in electrochemical applications such as batteries, supercapacitors and electrocatalysts for fuel cell applications and water electrolysis. In order to gain the optimal benefit, it is necessary to implement tailor made functionalities in the porous carbon surfaces as well as in the carbon skeleton through the comprehensive experimentation. These most appealing nanoporous carbon materials can be synthesized through the carbonization of high carbon containing molecular precursors by using soft or hard templating or non-templating pathways. This review encompasses the approaches and the wide range of methodologies that have been employed over the last five years in the preparation and functionalisation of nanoporous carbon materials via incorporation of metals, non-metal heteroatoms, multiple heteroatoms, and various surface functional groups that mostly dictate their place in a wide range of practical applications.

Abstract:The marriage of catalyst nanoparticles and mesoporous supports brings exciting new opportunities in the field of catalysis, which provides the ability to create advanced nanoporous catalysts for a wide range of catalytic processes. It has been found that not only the features of mesoporous supports, such as, surface areas, mesostructures, and pore sizes, are critical for the catalytic performances, but also the unique properties of catalyst nanoparticles, including dispersion, particle size, and loading amount, play critical roles in determining catalytic performance. Those aspects have been discussed partly in previous reviews, but a comprehensive overview on the basic design principles and synthetic methods for the marriage of catalyst nanoparticles and mesoporous supports is still lacking. In this review, the recent progresses in the fabrication of advanced catalysts by incorporation of catalyst nanoparticles into mesoporous supports are summarized. First, the synthetic strategies for the controllable synthesis are reviewed. At the same time, the corresponding chemical‐/physically properties of the resultant supported mesoporous catalysts are highlighted. After that, the catalytic performances of the resultant mesoporous catalysts in the thermal catalysis, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis are discussed. Moreover, the research challenges and perspectives in this field are assessed. Abstract:Porous materials have attracted considerable attention in materials science, chemistry and multidisciplinary areas of research due to their diverse structures, tailorable functionalities, large surface areas, remarkable optical transparency, confinement and shape selectivity effects. The precise architecture of porous photocatalytic materials has been extensively reported by the hybridization of semiconducting nanoparticles (NPs), light-responsive metal complexes and plasmonic metal NPs with silica-based micro-, meso- and macro-porous nanostructures. This review targets to cover state-of-the-art accomplishments in the surface engineering chemistry of zeolites, mesoporous silica, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as excellent host materials for solar to chemical energy conversion and environmental remediation. The specific advantages and disadvantages of representative porous materials in photocatalysis have also been elaborated and summarized. Finally, key advances and prospects are presented to overcome the current challenges in photocatalysis and to inspire further studies in this rapidly evolving research field.

Abstract:According to an ancient Chinese proverb by Lao Tzu, the importance of porosity in materials can be understood with the famous quote: “The jar is made by kneading clay, but its usefulness consists in its capacity to hold.” The proverb was old but its meaning never was, until the pioneering work of Mobil researchers in 1991 for the discovery of mesoporous silica, MCM‐41, which has laid down the roadmap for everlasting enthusiastic zeal in relishing the porosity in materials. Considering their potential application in a fairly wide range of applications from advance sensors and catalytic adsorbents to controlled drug delivery system, the world has witnessed the most dramatic increase in R&D for synthesizing mesoporous materials. Thanks to the empty space, the mesoporous materials possess many attractive properties like high specific surface area, large pore volume, narrow pore size distribution, long‐range order of uniform channels, and thicker pore walls. It is only due to these properties that mesoporous materials have attracted the world‐wide attention of researchers and thousands of research papers have been published on this class of materials in the past two decades. The growth in this area of materials research has been truly remarkable. In addition to mesoporous silica prepared through sol–gel and hydrothermal methods, mesoporosity has been induced in metal oxides, clays, carbon, polymers, and zeolite materials through various soft/hard templating and supramolecular assembly pathways. There are unlimited opportunities in the synthesis of new mesoporous materials of desired structural and surface properties and in exploring them in advance applications for the benefit of the society.

Abstract:Metal–organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles, also called porous coordination polymers, are a major part of nanomaterials science, and their role in catalysis is becoming central. The extraordinary variability and richness of their structures afford engineering synergies between the metal nodes, functional linkers, encapsulated substrates, or nanoparticles for multiple and selective heterogeneous interactions and activations in these MOF-based nanocatalysts. Pyrolysis of MOF-nanoparticle composites forms highly porous N- or P-doped graphitized MOF-derived nanomaterials that are increasingly used as efficient catalysts especially in electro- and photocatalysis. This review first briefly summarizes this background of MOF nanoparticle catalysis and then comprehensively reviews the fast-growing literature reported during the last years. The major parts are catalysis of organic and molecular reactions, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and views of prospects. Major challenges of our society are addressed using these well-defined heterogeneous catalysts in the fields of synthesis, energy, and environment. In spite of the many achievements, enormous progress is still necessary to improve our understanding of the processes involved beyond the proof-of-concept, particularly for selective methane oxidation, hydrogen production, water splitting, CO<sub>2</sub> reduction to methanol, nitrogen fixation, and water depollution.

Abstract:Metal nanoparticles (NPs) supported on porous materials have shown great advantages in many catalytic application fields. Supported metal NPs are receiving extensive attention due to their significant contribution in a wide range of current and future applications, and this is arguably one of the fastest growing research fields. In this review, we highlight various types of metal catalysts that possess great potential in several catalytic reactions. The major focus has been on metal oxides, nanoporous metals and metal NPs supported on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and zeolites. Special attention has been given to the synthesis strategies and application of the NPs supported on MOFs and zeolites, which are considered highly interesting and rapidly expanding areas in heterogeneous catalysis. Abstract:Interconnected porous materials have recently emerged as hybrid porous materials, comprising (meso/micro)pores with interconnected (micro/meso)porous walls. Benefiting from structural, morphological, and geometrical properties, interconnected porous materials are endowed with high porosity, specific surface area, mass transfer capacity, tailored pore sizes, volume and shape compatibility. These hybrid materials can be synthesized and further functionalized into a wide range of nanomaterials by either modifying conventional strategies or involving novel strategies such as pillared-layer assembly, defect-formation and/or the use of structure-directing agents. Owing to their exceptional properties, functionalized materials have already exhibited remarkable potential in various practical applications including reduction, sensing, purification, detection of gases, harvesting, conversion, and storage of energy, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, chemical synthesis, as well as non-automotive applications. A brief description of recent advancements in catalysis and energy conversion/storage applications of functionalized interconnected materials as well as prospects is provided in this contribution.

Abstract:Owning to their unique structures and multi-functionalities, the core-shell structured nanomaterials are receiving great attention in recent years, and being widely used in various catalytic processes. The purpose of this review is to highlight the recent achievements in fabrication and application of core-shell nanostructures (i.e., metal core@ metal shell, metal core@ oxide shell, metal core@ carbon shell, metal core@ polymer, and metal core @ zeolite shell) in catalytic chemistry. The influences of assembled structures and resulting electronic properties on catalytic performance as well as catalyst durability are discussed. In view of the new research findings, the concept of nanoreactor with the yolk/shell structure and its role in catalytic reactions are outlined. At the end of the article, a summary and outlook of these novel materials with respect to controlled synthesis and potential applications are provided.

Abstract:In recent years, climate change and air pollution have garnered global attention due to their significant threats to human health and environment. The rising emissions of gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have become pressing environmental issues. Addressing the growing emission of CO2 and gaseous pollutants urgently requires the development of new materials that can enhance the efficiency of adsorption or catalysis systems. Mesoporous materials have attracted much attention for gases capture and conversion, due to their exceptionally high surface area, interconnect pore network, and superior mass transfer. These characteristics promise improvements in adsorption/catalysis capabilities, as well as in materials durability and stability. This review explores recent advancements in mesoporous materials, such as mesoporous metal oxides (e.g., mesoporous TiO2, MnO2, Co3O4, and CeO2), mesoporous silicas, and mesoporous carbon for the adsorption or catalysis of gaseous pollutants (i.e., CO2, NOx, and VOCs). Their mesoporous texture and surface chemistry, along with the influence of loading species (e.g., metal and metal oxides) on their efficiency and selectivity for gases capture and conversion, are detailed. Furthermore, the review outlines prevailing trends, identifies key challenges in the development of mesoporous materials, delineates future research directions, and proposes strategies to achieve the deployment of mesoporous materials in gas adsorption and catalysis.

Abstract:Janus materials are anisotropic nano‐ and micro architectures with two different faces consisting of distinguishable or opposite physicochemical properties. In parallel with the discovery of new methods for the fabrication of these materials, decisive progress has been made in their application, e.g. in biological science, catalysis, pharmaceuticals and more recently, in battery technology. This mini‐review systematically covers recent and significant achievements in the application of task‐specific Janus nano‐materials as heterogeneous catalysts in various types of chemical reactions, including reduction, oxidative desulfurization and dye degradation, asymmetric catalysis, biomass transformation, cascade reactions, oxidation, transition metal‐catalyzed cross coupling reactions, electro‐ and photocatalytic reactions as well as gas‐phase reactions. Finally, an outlook on possible future applications is given.
