Abstract:This study develops a sequential multiscale model to investigate the interface failure of graphene-reinforced epoxy nanocomposites. The molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to track the graphene-epoxy interface behavior through normal opening and tangential sliding modes modeling at nanoscale. Four kinds of functional groups on the graphene including –OH, –NH2, –CH3 and –COOH are considered. The traction-separation law in the normal direction and the shear-lag model in the tangential direction are used to mimic the interface behavior. Furthermore, the scaled boundary finite element method in collaboration with a new hybrid quadtree algorithm is used to discretize the nanocomposite representative volume element at microscale. In addition to the functional group types, the volume fraction and aspect ratio of the graphene nanoplatelets are taken into account in the microscale simulation. The results show that the addition of functional groups to graphene can greatly improve the load-bearing capacity of the interface between nanoplatelets and epoxy resin. Meanwhile, the reinforcement effect of nanoplatelets is related to their aspect ratio and volume fraction. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed model are validated by comparing the results with traditional finite element method. This study provides a theoretical support and guidance for the design and fabrication of graphene reinforced nanocomposites.
Fatigue Behavior of Polymer Encapsulated Graphene to Mitigate Interfacial Fatigue Damage

Abstract:In applications such as flexible electronic devices, graphene and other 2D materials are frequently in contact with stretchable polymeric substrates. The interface between 2D materials and polymers is dominated by weak van der Waals (vdW) forces and can eventually degrade due to the frequent dynamic mechanical loads that these devices experience. This can lead to significant local delamination and shear fracture of the 2D materials. Using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) encapsulation method, we have shown that the damage in graphene is significantly mitigated when it is capped during dynamic loading. To track the spread of damage in both encapsulated and non‐encapsulated graphene, in situ cyclic loading is performed. The fundamental process driving this substantial reduction in damage propagation in the 2D lattice is explained by the conventional shear lag model. It is also observed that softer PDMS substrate and capping layer completely mitigated the fatigue damage in graphene for 100 cycles at 10 percent applied fatigue strain. Degradation and Recovery of Graphene/polymer Interfaces under Cyclic Mechanical Loading

Abstract:Interface failure is a common phenomenon for conventional composite materials when subjected to repeated mechanical loads, and it tends to be critical for nanocomposites due to several orders of magnitude enhancement in interfacial area. Herein, the graphene/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) interface when subjected to cyclic loading conditions exhibits obvious mechanical degradation through interfacial sliding, which has received little attention yet. Through a joint study of experimental tests and molecular dynamics simulations, the interface weakening is attributed to the formation of graphene buckles that not only reduces the interfacial contact area but also impairs the overall interfacial load transfer. However, reminiscent of the shape memory effect that is commonly triggered by temperature, conformational transition at the interfaces exhibits remarkable mechanical recovery under a moderate thermal stimulus, manifested by the interface reconstruction activated by van der Waals (vdW) forces. These findings elucidate the complex interactions between matrix and nanostructures in composite materials under cyclic loading conditions, and control over this mechanism could provide guidelines upon chemical design through tailoring the interfacial adhesion for specific applications.
Interfacial Anti-Fatigue Effect in Graphene-Copper Nanolayered Composites under Cyclic Shear Loading

Abstract:Low-cycle fatigue behaviors of graphene-copper nanolayered (GCuNL) composites are explored at different interface configurations and repeat layer spacings. The graphene interfaces can trap dislocations through impeding the propagation of dislocations in copper layers, giving rise to the absence of softening, and an increase in the fatigue strength of GCuNL composites (up to 400% that of pure copper). This anti-fatigue effect is independent of the crystal orientation of copper or the chirality of graphene due to interfacial constraints and can be controlled by tailoring the repeat layer spacing. Low repeat layer spacing increases the instability and nonlinearity of the composites, while high repeat layer spacing decreases the anti-fatigue effect. The optimum value of the repeat layer spacing for the GCuNL composites is 3-7 nm, in order to achieve a balanced anti-fatigue capability and interface stability.
Non-Eulerian behavior of graphitic materials under compression

Abstract:The mechanical behavior of graphitic materials is greatly affected by the weak interlayer bonding with van der Waals forces for a range of thickness from nano to macroscale. Herein, we present a comprehensive study of the effect of layer thickness on the compression behavior of graphitic materials such as graphene which are fully embedded in polymer matrices. Raman Spectroscopy was employed to identify experimentally the critical strain to failure of the graphitic specimens. The most striking finding is that, contrary to what would be expected from Eulerian mechanics, the critical compressive strain to failure decreases with increase of flake thickness. This is due to the layered structure of the material and in particular the weak cohesive forces that hold the layers together. The plate phenomenology breaks down for the case of multi-layer graphene, which can be approached as discrete single layers weakly bonded to each other. This behavior is modelled here by considering the interlayer bonding (van der Waals forces) as springs in series, and very good agreement was found between theory and experiment. Finally, it will be shown that in the post failure regime multi-layer graphenes exhibit negative stiffness and thus behave as mechanical metamaterials.

Abstract:The low wear resistance of macroscale graphene coatings does not match the ultrahigh mechanical strength and chemical inertness of the graphene layer itself; however, the wear mechanism responsible for this issue at low mechanical stress is still unclear. Here, we demonstrate that the susceptibility of the graphene monolayer to wear at its atomic step edges is governed by the mechanochemistry of frictional interfaces. The mechanochemical reactions activated by chemically active SiO2 microspheres result in atomic attrition rather than mechanical damage such as surface fracture and folding by chemically inert diamond tools. Correspondingly, the threshold contact stress for graphene edge wear decreases more than 30 times to the MPa level, and mechanochemical wear can be described well with the mechanically assisted Arrhenius-type kinetic model, i.e., exponential dependence of the removal rate on the contact stress. These findings provide a strategy for improving the antiwear of graphene-based materials by reducing the mechanochemical interactions at tribological interfaces.

Abstract:In this paper the mechanical properties of a series of hydrogen functionalized graphyne are investigated through acting tensile loads on the monolayer networks. Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to calculate the fracture strains and corresponding maximum forces for pristine graphyne along both armchair and zigzag directions. Furthermore, hydrogen functionalized graphynes with different functionalization sites are analyzed to investigate the effect of functionlization on the mechanical performance. Finally, Young's modulus of all the investigated architectures are computed. The obtained results show that monolayer graphyne is mechanically stable with high strength and stiffness, and the mechanical performance can be tuned through structure engineering and functionalization.
Size Effect and Scaling in Quasi-static and Fatigue Fracture of Graphene Polymer Nanocomposites

Abstract:This work investigated how the structure size affects the quasi-static and fatigue behaviors of graphene polymer nanocomposites, a topic that has been often overlooked. The results showed that both quasi-static and fatigue failure of these materials scale nonlinearly with the structure size due to the presence of a significant Fracture Process Zone (FPZ) ahead of the crack tip induced by graphene nanomodification. Such a complicated size effect and scaling in either quasi-static or fatigue scenario cannot be described by the Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM), but can be well captured by the Size Effect Law (SEL) which considers the FPZ. Thanks to the SEL, the enhanced quasi-static and fatigue fracture properties were properly characterized and shown to be independent of the structure size. In addition, the differences on the morphological and mechanical behaviors between quasi-static fracture and fatigue fracture were also identified and clarified in this work. The experimental data and analytical analyses reported in this paper are important to deeply understand the mechanics of polymer-based nanocomposite materials and even other quasi-brittle materials (e.g., fiber-reinforced polymers or its hybrid with nanoparticles, etc.), and further advance the development of computational models capable of capturing size-dependent fracture of materials in various loading conditions.

Abstract:Damage at micro- and nanoscale plays a key role in the failure of a solid, but such behaviors at the interfaces of two-dimensional (2D) materials are still not fully explored. In this work we systematically study the interfacial damage of bilayer graphene (BLG) beyond its interfacial shear strength, covering aspects of theory, experiment, and simulation. We extend the well-established shear-lag model for monolayer graphene on a polymer surface to a graphene/graphene/polymer system, whose numerical results demonstrate that the deformations of two graphene layers are strongly coupled with strain localizations and affected by the edges, and they both remain deformed even after the interface has been damaged. Using Raman spectroscopy and the carbon-isotope substitution technique, the interfacial damage of BLG is monitored experimentally, confirming the non-zero strains in the graphene layers with a damaged interface. Finally, molecular dynamics simulations reveal that with an increased tension, the shear stress concentration near the BLG edge increases the density of interfacial dislocation, initiating the damage and expanding to the central part. This work helps clarify the interfacial damage process in a 2D material system with a cross-scale picture, and we believe that it will provide valuable guidance for the understanding of other basic issues in solid mechanics.
Interfacial Stress Transfer in a Graphene Monolayer Nanocomposite

Abstract:Graphene is one of the stiffest known materials, with a Young's modulus of 1 TPa, making it an ideal candidate for use as a reinforcement in high-performance composites. However, being a one-atom thick crystalline material, graphene poses several fundamental questions: (1) can decades of research on carbon-based composites be applied to such an ultimately-thin crystalline material? (2) is continuum mechanics used traditionally with composites still valid at the atomic level? (3) how does the matrix interact with the graphene crystals and what kind of theoretical description is appropriate? We have demonstrated unambiguously that stress transfer takes place from the polymer matrix to monolayer graphene, showing that the graphene acts as a reinforcing phase. We have also modeled the behavior using shear-lag theory, showing that graphene monolayer nanocomposites can be analyzed using continuum mechanics. Additionally, we have been able to monitor stress transfer efficiency and breakdown of the graphene/polymer interface.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulation is performed to analyze the deformation mechanism of graphene nanoribbons. When the load is applied along the zigzag orientation, tensile stress yields brittle fracture and compressive stress results in lattice shearing and hexagonal-to-orthorhombic phase transformation. Along the armchair direction, tensile stress produces lattice shearing and phase transformation, but compressive stress leads to a large bonding force. The phase transformation induced by lattice shearing is reversible for 17% and 30% strain in compressive loading along the zigzag direction and tensile loading along the armchair direction. The energy dissipation is less than 10% and resulting pseudo-elasticity enhances the ductility.

Abstract:The fatigue performance of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites under cyclic loading remains a significant concern in various engineering applications due to the complex damage mechanisms and uncertain failure modes associated with these materials. Despite their exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, CFRP composites are prone to progressive damage accumulation, leading to premature failure and reduced structural integrity. The present study investigates the flexural fatigue response of pristine CFRPs and CFRPs with added graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), accompanied by in-situ microscopy for progressive damage analysis. Eight layers of carbon fibers fabric, both pristine and GNP coated were utilized to fabricate the composites using vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) technique. GNP-added composites exhibited significantly improved monotonic flexural strength, strain and fatigue life compared to pristine composites. The dissipated strain energy density (DSED) was also evaluated as a function of cycles and correlated with the damage that happened in the composite using in-situ optical imaging. While cycling at or below three-quarters of the maximum tensile stress, it was observed that the DSED decreased with the number of cycles in both composites. However, at higher loads, the DSED was found to increase progressively, ultimately shooting up during catastrophic failure. These composites that showed a decrease in DSED with cycles, did not fail even at one million cycles and had a higher residual strength than the original when they were forced to break under monotonic loading and the percentage increment was even higher when GNPs were used. Additionally, post-failure fracture surface examination using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was conducted to understand the influence of GNP addition on damage evolution of CFRPs.

Abstract:Fracture is one of the most prominent concerns for large scale applications of graphene. In this paper, we review some of the recent progresses in experimental and theoretical studies on the fracture behaviors of graphene, with discussions touching theoretical strength, mode I fracture toughness, mixed mode fracture, chemical fracture, irradiation fracture, dynamic fracture, impact fracture, and sonication fracture. In spite of rapid developments in experiments and simulations, there are still significant yet unresolved issues related to the fracture of graphene, examples including: (1) Can one enhance the toughness of graphene with designed topological defects? (2) How does grain size affect the strength of polycrystalline graphene? (3) How do the out-of-plane effects (e.g., wrinkle caused by external loading or curvature induced by topological defects) influence the fracture of graphene? (4) Can one develop a continuum model with the ability to capture graphene fracture with complicated modes, such as shear fracture coupled with wrinkling deformation and tear fracture? (5) How does fracture occur when tearing a polycrystalline graphene sheet? (6) Can one control the fracture behavior of graphene by combing the chemical, irradiation and stress effect? (7) How fast can cracks propagate in graphene? (8) What is the behavior of interfacial cracks in graphene, i.e., cracks along the grain boundaries or interfaces of heterogeneous structures? (9) How does a multilayer graphene membrane break under high speed impact and why such structures can absorb a large amount of kinetic energy? (10) Can one tailor/design the graphene structures with controlled fracture? The intention here is not to provide complete answers to such questions, but to draw attention from the mechanics community to them as potential research topics.
In situ tensile fracturing of multilayer graphene nanosheets for their in-plane mechanical properties

Abstract:The excellent mechanical properties of single- and few-layer graphene have been well-quantified and evidenced by computational methods and local indentation measurements. However, there are less experimental reports on the in-plane mechanical properties of multilayer graphene sheets, despite many practical applications in flexible electronic and energy devices (e.g. graphene flexible electronic display, battery, and storage devices) are actually based on these thicker nanosheets. Here, in-plane fracture behaviors of multilayer graphene nanosheets with thicknesses between ∼10 and 300 nm (∼10-1000 layers) are characterized and quantified by in situ scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy under tensile loading. We found that, generally, the fracture strengths of graphene nanosheets decrease as the thickness (or layers) increases; however, the fracture strain of thinner graphene sheets is less than that of thicker sheets. The fracture process of the thicker nanosheets includes the initial flattened stage, the stable elastic stage, and the rapid fracture with brittle characteristics, while the thinner nanosheets show obvious delamination between the atomic layers at fracture. This work provides critical experimental insights into the tensile fracture behavior of multilayer two-dimensional materials and a better understanding on their realistic mechanical performance for potential flexible device and composite applications.
Microscopic Mechanisms Behind the High Friction and Failure Initiation of Graphene Wrinkles.

Abstract:Wrinkling occurs on the surfaces of large-area graphene ubiquitously. Despite that the wrinkled structures are found to degrade the lubricous property, the behind mechanisms remain less understood. Here, atomic force microscopy is adopted to characterize the friction and wear properties of graphene wrinkles (GWs) with different heights by nanoscratch tests. We verify the phenomena of high friction and reduced load-carrying capacity of wrinkles and report the observation of lubrication deterioration with increased heights. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal that the contact quality at the interface is a dominant role in the friction evolution of wrinkles. The high friction of wrinkles is determined by the increased contact area and commensurability caused by the wrinkle deformation and topography changes. The wrinkle failure initiates near the root of the formed bilayer configuration due to the increased lateral stiffness and reduced atomic distance between the wrinkle layers. The increased interlocking effect results in a local shear stress of 91 GPa and induces the phase transitions of carbon atoms easily. As the wrinkle height decreases, the unstable local configuration weakens the interlocking effects and cannot fail even at a high load. This investigation sheds light on the microscopic frictional contact of GWs and provides guidance for tuning the tribological properties of graphene by controlling the wrinkle structures.
Anti-fatigue nanomechanics in the pre-cracked graphene-copper artificial nacre under cyclic tension

Abstract:The fatigue performance of pre-cracked graphene-copper artificial nacre (GrCu nacre) under cyclic tensile loading is investigated using theoretical analysis and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Mechanical models are proposed to describe the fatigue performance of GrCu nacre, which agree well with MD simulations. Compared with nanocomposites consisting of large graphene sheets, graphene fragments cannot improve the ultimate strength of GrCu nacre, but significantly improve its fatigue limit. This anti-fatigue effect is dominated by the graphene-copper interfaces with van der Waals interactions, which can be adjusted by tailoring the architectural parameters of GrCu nacre. The ultimate strength of GrCu nacre decreases as the volume fraction of graphene increases. The fatigue limit of GrCu nacre decreases as the length of graphene fragments increases, and can be approximately described by a quadratic function of interlayer repeat spacing. An anomalous weakening effect occurs when the in-plane distance between graphene fragments is less than 2 nm, while this effect can be ignored when it is higher than 2 nm. The fatigue ratio of common metals is ∼ 0.4, whereas that of GrCu nacre is generally higher than 0.9. These underlying mechanisms and theoretical models can improve the fundamental understanding of the fatigue performance of composites with incoherent interfaces, as well as the bottom-up design of graphene-metal nanocomposites.

Abstract:The invention of nanoparticles brought a new dimension of research into fabricating and utilizing nanocomposites. Especially nanoparticles in the range between 1 and 100 nm become a prime concern as they possess completely unique properties. Among the different nanofiller resources, graphene is considered the most auspicious one as it exhibits outstanding properties in the mechanical and functional domains, and graphene-reinforced nanocomposite is a major field of research nowadays. Fatigue is a very important phenomenon and enhancing the fatigue resistance of the composite is one of the major considerations for researchers before using the material in structural applications. Almost all the research concludes that the incorporation of graphene as a filler remarkably enhances the fatigue life of the nanocomposites; however, the limited research in this context failed to create a decisive understanding of this revolutionary material. Therefore, this study aims to provide a concise review of the advantages of including graphene fillers in composite materials, including polymer matrix composites, metal matrix composites, and hybrid composites, specifically in relation to their fatigue strength. The significance of this topic lies in the fact that fatigue breakdowns might result in catastrophic outcomes. Based on the research, it can be inferred that the inclusion of graphene filler enhances the fatigue resistance of the composite. However, a comprehensive comprehension of this matter is still lacking. Therefore, this study would greatly contribute to the research community by providing comprehensive insights into the fatigue phenomena, fatigue fracture mechanisms, and fatigue life of this promising material. Abstract:<p>The mechanism of fatigue-induced interface damage in Cu/V nanoscale metallic multilayers was systematically investigated using the state-of-the-art <em>in situ</em> transmission electron microscopy. Upon cyclic compression, Cu/V nanoscale metallic multilayers show an interface-controlled fatigue deformation, and the interface morphology of Cu/V nanopillars changes significantly after 200 cyclic loadings. Cyclic deformation induced nanoscale intrusions/extrusions on the bimetal interface, while no sign of persistent slip bands or crack was observed. Formation of the nano-intrusions/extrusions can be attributed to the reciprocating defect motion and severe defect-interface interactions during the fatigue testing. This study provides a unique mechanistic understanding on the fatigue damage in metallic multilayers at nanoscale and sheds light on tailoring the damage tolerance of heterostructures via interface engineering.</p>

Abstract:Graphene-derived layer-by-layer (LbL) assemblies in the form of films or fibers have recently attracted particular interests owing to their low cost, facile fabrication, and outstanding mechanical properties, which could be further tuned by surface functionalization that cross-links graphene sheets in the assembly. However, this interfacial engineering approach has not yet been finely utilized considering the dual roles of cross-links in modifying the intrinsic properties of graphene sheets and their interlayer interactions. In this work, combining first-principles calculations and continuum-mechanics-based model analysis, we find that the functionalization weakens the intrinsic mechanical resistance of graphene, whereas it enhances interlayer load transfer through interlayer cross-linking. There are optimum cross-linking densities or concentrations of the surface functional groups that maximize the overall tensile stiffness, tensile strength and strain to failure of graphene-derived LbL assemblies, arising from the competition between intralayer and interlayer load-bearing mechanisms, as defined by the type of functionalization and size of graphene sheets. Our work quantifies the ultimate mechanical performance of graphene-derived LbL assemblies, on the condition that their microstructures and functionalization could be adequately controlled in the fabrication process.

Abstract:Supreme mechanical performance and tribological properties render graphene a promising candidate as a surface friction modifier. Recently, it has been demonstrated that applying in-plane strain can effectively tune friction of suspended graphene in a reversible manner. However, since graphene is deposited on solid surfaces in most tribological applications, whether such operation will result in a similar modulation effect becomes a critical question to be answered. Herein, by depositing graphene onto a stretchable substrate, the frictional characteristics of supported graphene under a wide range of strain are examined with an in situ tensile loading platform. The experimental results show that friction of supported graphene decreases with increasing graphene strain, similar to the suspended system. However, depending on the adherence state of the graphene/substrate interface, the system exhibits two distinct friction regimes with significantly different strain dependences. Assisted by detailed atomic force microscopy imaging, we attribute the unique behavior to the transition between two friction modulation modes, i.e., contact-quality-dominated friction and puckering-dominated friction. This work provides a more comprehensive view of the influence of strain on surface friction of graphene, which is beneficial for active modulation of graphene friction through strain engineering.
