Abstract:In recent publications, we have proposed a model of fatigue damage to steels under multicyclic loading of smooth specimens and dependencies to describe the kinetics of fatigue limit reduction as a damage parameter. Such a decrease is due to the initial fatigue damage of the material at the microstructure level, which leads to the incubation of a crack in the zones of microstructural stress concentrators or its weakest elements, followed by germination along crystallographic planes and then by the transition to growth along forced planes under the action of normal stresses. In the currently known studies, fracture mechanics methods adapted to the growth of short cracks describe fatigue damage at the initial stages of fatigue. Their practical application is complicated by the need to determine the specific characteristics of the microstructure of materials, which are only sometimes available and unambiguous. In this regard, we consider a phenomenological approach based on the assumption of continuous fatigue damage of a material from the beginning of its cyclic loading until fracture or until the initiation of a non-propagating crack at the endurance limit. This damage can be described by a drop in the initial endurance limit to its standardized value at the French line and then to the level determined by the size of the crack at the fracture of the specimen. As the crack grows from the French line to fracture, the endurance limit corresponds to the threshold stress in the terminology of fracture mechanics. To describe the change in the endurance limit, a dependence is proposed that uses the parameters of the fatigue curve. A similar relationship is used to describe crack growth, which causes a decrease in the endurance limit.
