Abstract:Because of potential high energy densities, microfluidic fuel cells can serve as micro-scale power sources. Because microfluidic fuel cells typically operate in the co-laminar flow regime to enable a membrane-less design, they generally suffer from severe mass transfer limitations with respect to diffusion transport. To address this issue, a novel channel design that integrates slanted groove micro-mixers on the side walls of the channel is proposed. Numerical modeling on the design of groove micro-mixers and grooveless design demonstrates a mass transfer enhancement that has a 115% higher limiting current density and well-controlled convective mixing between the oxidant and the fuel streams with the use of slanted groove micro-mixers. Moreover, the growth of the thickness of the depletion boundary layer is found to be terminated within approximately 2 mm from the channel entrance, which is distinct from the constantly growing pattern in the grooveless design. In addition, a simplified mass transfer model capable of modeling the mass transfer prFocess with the presence of the transverse secondary flow is developed. Further, a dimensionless correlation is derived to analyze the effects of the design parameters on the limiting current density. The present theoretical study paves the way towards an optimal design of a microfluidic fuel cell integrating groove micro-mixers.

Abstract:Microfluidic fuel cell (MFC) is a burgeoning category of micro fuel cell technology based on laminar flow electrolytes. The merits of MFC, such as the absence of membrane electrolyte, flexible reactants selection, and high electrolyte conductivity, have been attracting researchers to explore this frontier area over the past two decades. However, realizing practical applications of MFCs remains a tremendous challenge. Many research works have been done to expedite research progress and obtain results reflecting inner mechanism via computational modeling and simulation, the general procedure of which is introduced in this paper. These studies primarily investigate the effects of various geometrical and operational parameters on diverse cell performance metrics, such as open-circuit voltage, current and power densities, and fuel utilization efficiency . However, contradictory outcomes and conclusions may arise due to disparities in the structural and parametric characteristics among different MFC models. In this regard, this review comprehensively summarizes prior computational modeling studies on MFC technology, with specific emphasis on different cell components including microchannels, inlets and outlets, electrodes, etc., as well as effects of different operational conditions encompassing electrolyte input, cell vibration, gas bubbling, and gravity. In addition, other related studies involving paper-based MFCs, cell stacking, and twin models are also introduced. Lastly, the future research perspective on MFC computational modeling is proposed, including potential structural innovations and modeling methods. This review paper shows the big puzzle of MFC modeling, the missing part of which is worthy of further study in the future.

Abstract:Paper-based microfluidic fuel cell (PMFC) has attracted great attention in the microfluidic fuel cell field in recent years. It utilizes the spontaneous capillary flow of reactant solutions in paper-based porous substrate to achieve passive transportations of fuel and oxidant, solving the fluid driving issue encountered in traditional microfluidic fuel cells and thus having broad application prospects in medical detection, wearable devices, micro sensors, environmental monitoring, and many other fields. However, the commercialization of this technology is impeded by the low output performance caused by the limited mass and energy transfer in PMFCs. To enhance the mass and energy transfer in PMFCs, numerous research studies have been conducted via experimental optimization of the cell materials and structures. Numerical analyses focusing on the structure–activity relationship of PMFCs were also performed recently. To provide a comprehensive and thorough review about the efforts devoted to improving performance of PMFC, research papers relevant to PMFC since its invention in 2014 have been extracted in this work and significant works were filtered to highlight the exciting advancements. The experimental studies were classified and discussed based on the key components involved in the PMFC system, followed by a critical review of the limited computational models. Potential directions for future research were also provided, aimed at overcoming the current technological challenges in PMFCs. Importantly, an innovative strategy of multi-scale simultaneous optimization of the cell properties is proposed considering the typical multi-scale feature of the PMFC system, which could inspire the designing of advanced cell materials with optimal multi-scale structures for applications of PMFCs.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been utilized as a promising power source for new energy vehicles. Their performances are greatly affected by the structural design of the flow field in the bipolar plate. In this paper, we present a novel three-dimensional (3D) bionic cathode flow field, inspired by the small intestinal villi. The structural design and working principle of the 3D bionic flow field units are first described. A 3D numerical model is developed to study the mass transfer and distribution of the reactants and products, as well as the polarization performances of the PEMFC with the 3D bionic cathode flow field. The simulation results indicate that the proposed 3D bionic flow field can significantly improve the reaction gas supply from the flow field to porous electrodes, and thus would be beneficial for the removal of liquid water in the cathode. The mass transfer of gas in the PEMFC can be enhanced due to the increasing contact areas between the gas diffusion layer (GDL) and the cathode flow field, and the distribution of currents in the membrane would be more uniform. The obtained results demonstrated the feasibility of using the 3D bionic flow field for the development of highly efficient PEMFCs with high power density.

Abstract:This paper provides a comprehensive review on the research and development in multi-scale numerical modeling and simulation of PEM fuel cells. An overview of recent progress in PEM fuel cell modeling has been provided. Fundamental transport phenomena in PEM fuel cells and the corresponding mathematical formulation of macro-scale models are analyzed. Various important issues in PEM fuel cell modeling and simulation are examined in detail, including fluid flow and species transport, electron and proton transport, heat transfer and thermal management, liquid water transport and water management, transient response behaviors, and cold-start processes. Key areas for further improvements have also been discussed.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy is recognized as the clean energy with the most development potential, and hydrogen fuel cell technology is considered the ultimate solution utilizing hydrogen energy. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has the merits of high energy efficiency, high energy density, low operating temperature, is clean, and affords environmental protection. Improving the structure of each functional layer could play a significant role in improving PEMFC performance. In addition, membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) are the core components of a PEMFC, and their structure includes three main parts, namely, the gas diffusion layer (GDL), catalytic layer (CL), and proton exchange membrane (PEM). Therefore, this review focuses on progress in the modeling and simulation of the material structure in MEAs. First, the GDL simulation models are critically reviewed, including two-phase calculation models and microscopic simulation models. Second, CL microstructure models are comprehensively evaluated, involving power density enhancement, catalyst loading distribution, electrochemical reaction and its performance optimization. Third, the PEM simulation model, relating to molecular dynamics (MD) simulation techniques, 3D numerical techniques, and multiphysics simulation, are reviewed. Finally, the three aspects of similarity, individuality, and complementarity of these simulation models are discussed, and necessary outlooks, including the current limitations and challenges, are suggested, providing a reference for low-cost, high-performing PEMFC membrane electrodes for the future.

Abstract:A silicon-based micro-proton exchange membrane fuel cell (μ-PEMFC) which carries out an outstanding cell performance and high efficient catalyst utilization ratio is proposed in this paper by the employment of three micro-nano synergical techniques. Firstly, a novel design incorporating multi-walled carbon nano-tubes (MWCNTs) on radial shaped micro-channel walls to form micro/nano reaction chambers which significantly enhance the reaction surface areas for the performance improvement. In the second, the dispensing of ionomer onto the three-phase zones in the reaction chambers is controlled by different rotation speed and the optimized distribution can therefore be achieved for the improvement of catalyst utilization. In the third, the cell interfacial strength is greatly enhanced by the employment of micro-interlocks for maintaining excellent interface between Nafion membrane and reaction chambers while minimizing the system size. A μ-PEMFC is successfully fabricated by integrating aforementioned synergical micro/nano structures altogether. The best cell efficiency is 26 mW cm−2 which corresponds to a catalyst utilization ratio of 38.2 W g-pt−1, and can be considered among the best performed micro-fuel cells.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) are a promising clean power source that can be used in a variety of applications such as automobiles, stationary power plants, and portable power devices. The application problem of PEM fuel cells is a multiscale application process involving porous media, consisting of a series of mass, momentum, and energy transfers through gas channels, current transfers through membrane electrode assemblies, and electrochemical reactions at three-phase boundaries. In this paper, the recent research progress of PEMFC in multiscale porous-media mass transfer processes is reviewed, the research progress of fuel cell parameter identification is reviewed, and the future development direction is summarized and analyzed. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of proton exchange membrane fuel cell mass transfer and parameter identification to reference researchers and engineers in the field of fuel cell systems.

Abstract:Paper-based self-pumping microfluidic fuel cells (PMFCs) typically exploit the wicking effects in porous papers to enable passive reactant delivery and co-laminar flow, eliminating micro pumps and physical membranes. PMFCs have been regarded as promising micro-power sources for next-generation paper-based electrochemical microfluidic assays for biomedical applications. However, the PMFC performance is fundamentally limited by the low capillary flow velocity and ineffective diffusive fuel transport. In this study, a novel PMFC with an anodic wedge-shaped channel is developed. The anodic wedge-shaped channel enables reactant convection at improved fuel flow velocity. Visualization experiments suggest that the fuel flow velocity can be improved by about 23 times in this anodic wedge-shaped channel configuration as compared to that in conventional single-layer paper-based flow channel. In addition, favorable features like localized enhancement of fuel transport and reduced fuel crossover are also observed in this novel configuration. Due to enhanced convective-diffusive fuel transport, the cell performance can be improved 245.8 % as compared to the single-layer case. The peak power density reaches 59.9 mW cm −2 and the limiting current density achieves 305.9 mA cm −2 , outperforming most of the previous PMFCs. This anodic wedge-shaped channel configuration can also be potentially used in paper-based assays to enhance reactant delivery.

Abstract:In this review article, insight is provided into the mass transfer of membranes in proton‐exchange fuel cells. The microstructure of the membrane is introduced, and the mass‐transfer mechanism of the membrane is systematically sorted out from the mass‐transfer model and the corresponding simulation method. In addition, methods to improve the mass‐transfer efficiency are discussed. The proton‐exchange membrane is a crucial component of proton‐exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), and its mass transfer plays a vital role in the performance and energy conversion efficiency of fuel cells. In this article, the fundamental structure and working principle of PEMFCs, as well as the microstructure of the membrane, are introduced. The mass‐transfer mechanism of the membranes is systematically sorted out from the model of mass transfer and the corresponding simulation method, and the mass transfer is quantitatively calculated from the macroscopic perspective. Additionally, methods to improve the mass‐transfer efficiency from both internal and external aspects are discussed. In conclusion, in this article, mass transfer in PEMFCs is comprehensively discussed and a valuable reference is offered for future research and development in this field.

Abstract:This paper discusses a membraneless microfluidic fuel cell using the multi-stream laminar flow to keep the fuel and oxidant streams separated when they are flowing at a low Reynolds number state. The system we used consists of a microfluidic channel with three inlets. The fuel, oxidant, and the electrolyte solution enter the channel from the inlets and continue to flow in parallel without turbulent mixing (diffusive exchange occurs across the interface at a micro scale). During the working process of the fuel cell, controllable output potential and current of the fuel cell can be obtained and studied by changing the flow rate of the stream between the fuel and the oxidant. Results indicate that this novel design can be used in microscopic scale power source systems such as the lab-on-chip control systems because it is easy to integrate with other micro functional systems.

Abstract:<p>Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) as a technology than can convert chemical energy in wastewater into electricity has attracted increasing attentions. Improvements of the performance of MFCs are often aimed at enhancing the catalytic activity of electroactive biofilms and electrode materials. However, the electrode kinetics are also highly dependent on mass transfer processes, which can be the rate-limiting steps in the electrochemical/bioelectrochemical reactions occurring in MFCs. These transfer processes include the substrate and ion fluxes in the anode, oxygen/substrate crossover and ion fluxes across separators, as well as the oxygen and ion fluxes in the cathode. A high concentration gradient resulting from an insufficient reactant supply and product removal would lead to a concentration overpotential, which deteriorate the MFC performance. A better understanding of the transport phenomenon in MFCs could be helpful for alleviating the mass transfer limitation and could provide the guidance for electrode and MFC design, dramatically increasing the power outputs and greatly contributing to large-scale applications of MFCs. This study provides a review that firstly discusses the fundamental principles of mass transfer processes and quantitatively analyzes these processes in MFCs, analyzes and summarizes the mass transfer limitations in different components of MFCs, and finally concludes with a perspective highlighting the major challenges and possible strategies for minimizing mass transfer losses for further performance enhancement.</p>

High Efficient Μ-Pemfcs by Integrating Micro/nano Scaled Performance Improving Components

Abstract:A silicon-based and fully integrated micro-proton exchange membrane fuel cell (μ-PEMFC) which carries out high efficient catalyst utilization and outstanding cell performance is introduced in this paper. The novel design involves the integration of micro- and nano-structures that leads to higher reaction rate due to larger surface areas, reduced impedance of fuel diffusion due to micro-patterned reaction chamber that creates extra three-phase zones, and improved interfacial strength and reduced ohmic impedance due to micro-interlocks of a single cell. The best performance in the current study is 26 mW/cm2 with only 0.69 mg/cm2 of Pt catalyst, and it is superior to the present micro-fuel cells after normalizing Pt loading.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells are a new energy technology with great potential due to advantages such as high efficiency and no pollution. The structure of the gas flow channels has a profound impact on the overall performance of the fuel cell. Different flow channel geometries have their own advantages and disadvantages, and a good understanding of the influence of these structures on performance can provide a reference for the design and improvement of flow channel geometries in various application contexts. Numerical models can be used as a reasonable and reliable tool to evaluate the influence of operating and structural parameters on cell performance and service time by simulating the transport processes of substances and heat as well as electrochemical reactions inside the fuel cell and can be used for the optimisation of cell design. This paper reviews the recent models of proton exchange membrane fuel cells, summarises and analyses the effect of gas flow channels on fuel cells, and organises and concludes efficient design of flow channel structures to enhance PEMFC performance in terms of the cross-section shape, length, width, number of flow channels, and baffle position.

Abstract:A novel flow field was designed by deploying auxiliary channels inside the partially hollow ribs and drilling a series of arrayed holes on the auxiliary channels. This novel design rationally utilizes the ribs of the current collector and improves the volumetric efficiency of the parallel channels, leading to improved cell performance and homogeneity of current distribution. A three-dimensional, two-phase flow model was developed to analyze the influence of a variety of parameters on the oxygen and water saturation profiles, cell performance and current uniformity. It was found that the combination of auxiliary channels and hole array provides an extra pathway for reactant transport and water removal. A reasonable optimization of the flow field geometry, e. g. the hole size, the area ratio of arrayed holes and auxiliary channels, nonuniform distribution of arrayed holes et al., could further improve the cell performance and current uniformity at an extremely low pressure drop.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Three-dimensional models of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) with parallel and interdigitated flow channel designs were developed including the effects of liquid water formation on the reactant gas transport. The models were used to investigate the effects of the flow channel area ratio and the cathode flow rate on the cell performance and local transport characteristics. The results reveal that at high operating voltages, the cell performance is independent of the flow channel designs and operating parameters, while at low operating voltages, both significantly affect cell performance. For the parallel flow channel design, as the flow channel area ratio increases the cell performance improves because fuel is transported into the diffusion layer and the catalyst layer mainly by diffusion. A larger flow channel area ratio increases the contact area between the fuel and the diffusion layer, which allows more fuel to directly diffuse into the porous layers to participate in the electrochemical reaction which enhances the reaction rates. For the interdigitated flow channel design, the baffle forces more fuel to enter the cell and participate in the electrochemical reaction, so the flow channel area ratio has less effect. Forced convection not only increases the fuel transport rates but also enhances the liquid water removal, thus interdigitated flow channel design has higher performance than the parallel flow channel design. The optimal performance for the interdigitated flow channel design occurs for a flow channel area ratio of 0.4. The cell performance also improves as the cathode flow rate increases. The effects of the flow channel area ratio and the cathode flow rate on cell performance are analyzed based on the local current densities, oxygen flow rates and liquid water concentrations inside the cell.

Abstract:The performance of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) closely depends on internal reactant diffusion and liquid water removal. As one of the key components of PEMFCs, bipolar plates (BPs) provide paths for reactant diffusion and product transport. Therefore, to achieve high fuel cell performance, one key issue is designing BPs with a reasonable flow field. This paper provides a comprehensive review of various modifications of the conventional parallel flow field, interdigitated flow field, and serpentine flow field to improve fuel cells' overall performance. The main focuses for modifications of conventional flow fields are flow field shape, length, aspect ratio, baffle, trap, auxiliary inlet, and channels, as well as channel numbers. These modifications can partly enhance reactant diffusion and product transport while maintaining an acceptable flow pressure drop. This review also covers the detailed structural description of the newly developed flow fields, including the 3D flow field, metal flow field, and bionic flow field. Moreover, the effects of these flow field designs on the internal physical quantity transport and distribution, as well as the fuel cells' overall performance, are investigated. This review describes state-of-the-art flow field design, identifies the key research gaps, and provides references and guidance for the design of high-performance flow fields for PEMFCs in the future.

Recent Development of Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells and Performance Optimization Strategies: A Review

Abstract:Anion exchange membrane fuel cells combine the advantages of conventional alkaline fuel cells and proton exchange membrane fuel cells. This paper reviews the performance data of H2‐fueled AEMFCs since 2010 and summarizes already developed performance optimization schemes, which can provide useful insights for developing next‐generation AEMFCs. Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) are the most promising low‐temperature fuel cells and have received extensive attention. Compared to PEMFCs, the cost per unit of power can be significantly reduced for AEMFCs because, in theory, they allow the usage of non‐precious metal catalysts and low‐cost cell components. Owing to the development of advanced materials and performance improvement strategies, AEMFCs have achieved new records in both initial performance and durability. However, the high performance currently achieved is contingent on certain conditions, e. g., high Pt loading, large gas flowrates, and operation in pure O2, which are far from practical applications. Therefore, the transition to commercially relevant performance and durability is the next goal of AEMFCs. This paper reviews the performance data of H2‐fueled AEMFCs since 2010 and summarizes possible performance optimization schemes, which can provide useful insights for developing next‐generation AEMFCs.

Abstract:Hydrogen is a zero-carbon emission, high energy density, and sustainable sources of energy, while the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells have the potential to maximize their merits and achieve high energy conversion efficiency to electricity. However, in a real-world application, the ohmic resistance and transport resistance limit the power density of the fuel cells to achieve a desirable and saleable apparatus, which originates from the structure of each component. The microporous layer (MPL) is one of the key components in PEM fuel cells to provide uniform gas distribution and facilitate water transport. Herein, we discussed the theoretical and experimental developments in the field of MPL, with a focus on the fundamental mechanisms of mass transport in MPL and the design principles. The recent progress of rationalities of the structural design, the material selection, and the preparation methods of MPL that have played enabling roles in advancing this frontier are further reviewed. Finally, we provide an outlook for inspiration to MPL towards high performance, easy production, low costs, and environmentally friendly.
