Abstract:Counter-propagating all-normal dispersion (CANDi) fiber laser is an emerging high-energy single-cavity dual-comb laser source. Its relative timing jitter (RTJ), a critical parameter for dual-comb timing precision and spectral resolution, has not been comprehensively investigated. In this paper, we enhance the state-of-the-art CANDi fiber laser pulse energy from 1 nJ to 8 nJ. We then introduce a novel reference-free RTJ characterization technique that provides shot-to-shot measurement capability at femtosecond precision for the first time. The measurement noise floor reaches 1.6x10-7 fs2/Hz, and the corresponding integrated measurement precision is only 1.8 fs (1 kHz, 20 MHz). With this new characterization tool, we are able to study the physical origin of CANDi laser's RTJ in detail. We first verify that the cavity length fluctuation does not contribute to the RTJ. Then we measure the integrated RTJ to be 39 fs (1 kHz, 20 MHz) and identify the pump relative intensity noise (RIN) to be the dominant factor responsible for it. In particular, pump RIN is coupled to the RTJ through the Gordon-Haus effect. Finally, solutions to reduce the free-running CANDi laser's RTJ are discussed. This work provides a general guideline to improve the performance of compact single-cavity dual-comb systems like CANDi laser benefitting various dual-comb applications.

Practical GHz single-cavity all-fiber dual-comb laser for high-speed spectroscopy

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) with few-GHz tooth spacing that provides the optimal trade-off between spectral resolution and refresh rate is a powerful tool for measuring and analyzing rapidly evolving transient events. Despite such an exciting opportunity, existing technologies compromise either the spectral resolution or refresh rate, leaving few-GHz DCS with robust design largely unmet for frontier applications. In this work, we demonstrate a novel GHz DCS by exploring the multimode interference-mediated spectral filtering effect in an all-fiber ultrashort cavity configuration. The GHz single-cavity all-fiber dual-comb source is seeded by a dual-wavelength mode-locked fiber laser operating at fundamental repetition rates of about 1.0 GHz differing by 148 kHz, which has an excellent stability in the free-running state that the Allan deviation is only 101.7 mHz for an average time of 1 second. Thanks to the large repetition rate difference between the asynchronous dichromatic pulse trains, the GHz DCS enables a refresh time as short as 6.75 us, making it promising for studying nonrepeatable transient phenomena in real time. To this end, the practicality of the present GHz DCS is validated by successfully capturing the 'shock waves' of balloon and firecracker explosions outdoors. This GHz single-cavity all-fiber dual-comb system promises a noteworthy improvement in acquisition speed and reliability without sacrificing measurement accuracy, anticipated as a practical tool for high-speed applications.

Abstract:The recent development of fiber supercontinuum (SC) sources with ultra-low noise levels has been instrumental in advancing the state-of-the-art in a wide range of research topics. However, simultaneously satisfying the application demands of maximizing spectral bandwidth and minimizing noise is a major challenge that so far has been addressed with compromise, found by fine-tuning the characteristics of a single nonlinear fiber transforming the injected laser pulses into a broadband SC. In this work, we investigate a hybrid approach that splits the nonlinear dynamics into two discrete fibers optimized for nonlinear temporal compression and spectral broadening, respectively. This introduces new design degrees of freedom, making it possible to select the best fiber for each stage of the SC generation process. With experiments and simulations we study the benefits of this hybrid approach for three common and commercially available highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) designs, focusing on flatness, bandwidth and relative intensity noise of the generated SC. In our results, hybrid all-normal dispersion (ANDi) HNLF stand out as they combine the broad spectral bandwidths associated with soliton dynamics with extremely low noise and smooth spectra known from normal dispersion nonlinearities. Hybrid ANDi HNLF are a simple and low-cost route for implementing ultra-low noise SC sources and scaling their repetition rate for various applications such as biophotonic imaging, coherent optical communications, or ultrafast photonics.

Abstract:We integrate a spatial light modulator-based dispersion controller into a cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) system. By tuning the group delay dispersion (GDD) and fourth-order dispersion (FOD) terms, we control the CFWM phase matching and demonstrate an output bandwidth tuning of over 3.3×. At the maximum bandwidth, our system covers the telecommunications S-, C-, and L-bands (1466-1641 nm) with an average output power of 300 mW, which is contained in 52 individual lines spaced 374 GHz apart. This method represents a reconfigurable alternative to photonic crystal fibers for dispersion engineering and allows for the use of step-index fiber and customizable power spectral density (PSD) profiles.

Abstract:Data center interconnects require cost-effective photonic integrated optical transceivers to meet the ever-increasing capacity demands. Compared with a coherent transmission system, a complex-valued double-sideband (CV-DSB) direct detection (DD) system can minimize the cost of the photonic circuit, since it replaces two stable narrow-linewidth lasers with only a low-cost un-cooled laser in the transmitter while maintaining a similar spectral efficiency. In the carrier-assisted DD system, the carrier power accounts for a large proportion of the total optical signal power. Reducing the carrier to signal power ratio (CSPR) can improve the information-bearing signal power and thus the achievable system performance. To date, the minimum required CSPR is ∼7 dB for all the reported CV-DSB DD systems having electrical bandwidths of approximately half of baud rates. In this paper, we propose a deep-learning-enabled DD (DLEDD) scheme to recover the full optical field of the transmitted signal at a low CSPR of 2 dB in experiment. Our proposal is based on a dispersion-diversity receiver with an electrical bandwidth of ∼61.0% baud rate and a high tolerance to laser wavelength drift. A deep convolutional neural network enables accurate signal recovery in the presence of a strong signal-signal beat interference. Compared with the conventional method, the proposed DLEDD scheme can reduce the optimum CSPR by ∼8 dB, leading to a significant signal-to-noise ratio improvement of ∼5.8 dB according to simulation results. We experimentally demonstrate the optical field reconstruction for a 28-GBaud 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation signal after 80-km single-mode fiber transmission based on the proposed DLEDD scheme with a 2-dB optimum CSPR. The results show that the proposed DLEDD scheme could offer a high-performance solution for cost-sensitive applications such as data center interconnects, metro networks, and mobile fronthaul systems.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, diode laser technology development has achieved remarkable improvement in power, reliability and efficiency. Spectral brightness, wavelength-stabilization and spatial brightness are becoming very important for pumping of novel solid-state gain media and fiber lasers especially for efficient and power-hungry industrial and military applications. We will discuss the benefits of using 975 nm narrow-band curved grating Surfaceemitting Distributed Feedback lasers for pumping fiber lasers and thin disk lasers. SE-DFB lasers with less than 0.25 nm emission bandwidth, 0.07nm/°C thermal wavelength drift with over 50% power conversion efficiency has been achieved with a single emitter producing 73 W of CW power. Two-dimensional arrays of these lasers have been made for power scaling to achieve 1kW of power with less than 1nm spectral bandwidth. We will discuss the results and key advantages of using spectrally and spatially bright diodes for pumping fiber and thin disk lasers.

Abstract:Dual-comb source (DCS) generation occupies the central position to the versatilities of dual-comb applications. The single-cavity-based DCS generation is an emerging technology which provides superior mutual coherence between the two combs by sharing one laser cavity, therefore sophisticated active stabilization approaches are not necessary. However, the condition for starting and stabilizing dual-comb mode-locking in a single cavity is critical which hinder this technology towards practical applications. To resolve the bottleneck, we experimentally demonstrate the first intelligent single-cavity DCS by combining the real-time intelligent control module with the memory-aided intelligent searching algorithm. Given a tremendous six-dimensional parametric space, the intelligent DCS can operate under the dual-comb regime from a continuous wave state within a mean time of only 2.48 seconds. The dual-comb mode-locking state can be recovered automatically after interruption. The long-term stability of the intelligent DCS is validated as well through a 12-hour test in an open environment.

Abstract:Dual-comb microscopy (DCM), an interesting imaging modality based on the optical-frequency-comb (OFC) mode and image pixel one-to-one correspondence, benefits from scan-less full-field imaging and simultaneous confocal amplitude and phase imaging. However, the two fully frequency-stabilized OFC sources requirement hampers DCM practicality due to the complexity and costs. Here, a bidirectional single-cavity dual-comb fiber laser (SCDCFL) is adopted as a DCM low-complexity OFC source. Although the residual timing jitter in the SCDCFL blurs the image of a static object acquired by DCM, computational image correction significantly suppresses the image blur. Nanometer-order step surface profilometry with a 14.0 nm uncertainty highlights the computationally image-corrected DCM effectiveness. We further discuss a possibility to expand the computational image correction to a dynamic object and demonstrate its preliminary experiment. The proposed method enhances the DCM generality and practicality due to low-complexity OFC source.

Abstract:Bidirectional mode-locked lasers are an ideal light source for dual-comb technique for their system compactness and common noise cancellation. Here, we report an all-fiber bidirectional mode-locked laser based on nonlinear multimode interference. Asynchronous pulse trains in different directions with a repetition rate difference of 7 Hz are obtained. Besides, we record the pulse trains and spectra at different pump powers. In our experiment, the counter-propagating pulse (CPP) trains can operate in different states, such as the counterclockwise (CCW) direction works in single pulse while the clockwise (CW) direction works in multi-pulse or harmonic mode-locking. We believe that the work will provide a new platform for studying the dynamic characteristics of bidirectional mode-locked lasers.

Abstract:A non-fused fiber coupler is demonstrated for side-pumping of the double-clad fiber (DCF) lasers by adhesive techniques. The fiber coupler is fabricated by adhering an angularly polished single-clad fiber (SCF) to the inner cladding of the DCF. The pumping light is launched from the SCF by total inner reflection. Coupling coefficient as a function of coupling angle, bend distance, and backward scattering is investigated. The field distribution in DCF is also discussed.

Abstract:The combined effect of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), four-wave mixing (FWM) and self-pulsation in optical fibers can be either beneficial or detrimental, depending upon a specific application. In this work, we report for the first time that, under watt-level CW pumping in a common-cavity Ytterbium/Raman random fiber laser, a significant wavelength down-conversion is generated by FWM in a standard single-mode fiber; moreover, nonlinear optical dynamics of SRS, FWM and self-pulsation was simultaneously observed in this setup. In a certain range of pump powers, strong and stable self-pulsation effects were observed, which occurred simulta-neously with the cascaded SRS emissions and an intense visible orange emission at 603 nm, which can be attributed to the FWM from the 1064 nm light-wave. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical calculations for the FWM process. Besides, self-pulsation and high order cascaded are also analyzed. The importance of these results for high power Raman based fiber lasers and random fiber lasers, as well as continuum generation will be discussed.

Abstract:An ultrafast fiber laser system comprising two coherently combined amplifier channels is reported. Within this system, each channel incorporates a rod-type fiber power amplifier, with individual operations reaching approximately 233 W. The active-locking of these coherently combined channels, followed by compression using gratings, yields an output with a pulse energy of 504 μJ and an average power of 403 W. Exceptional stability is maintained, with a 0.3% root mean square (RMS) deviation and a beam quality factor M 2 < 1.2. Notably, precise dispersion management of the front-end seed light effectively compensates for the accumulated high-order dispersion in subsequent amplification stages. This strategic approach results in a significant reduction in the final output pulse duration for the coherently combined laser beam, reducing it from 488 to 260 fs after the gratings compressor, while concurrently enhancing the energy of the primary peak from 65% to 92%.

Dispersion engineering in a Brillouin fiber laser cavity for Kerr frequency comb formation

Abstract:We conduct numerical and experimental investigations on Kerr comb generation in a nonlinear and non-reciprocal fiber cavity by leveraging both stimulated Brillouin backscattering and cascaded four-wave mixing. By engineering the net cavity dispersion to be either normal or anomalous, we enable the formation of diverse patterns and localized structures in the cavity field. The comb's properties depend crucially on the mismatch between the frequency spacing of the bichromatic pump and the free spectral range of the Brillouin laser cavity in both cases. Particularly, in the anomalous regime, adjusting this parameter yields coherent, stable frequency combs in the modulation instability regime. This allows control and expansion of the spectral bandwidth up to 2 THz in normal dispersion and to 6 THz under anomalous net dispersion. This versatile and easily reconfigurable method holds potential for applications in high-speed communications and microwave synthesis.

Abstract:In this manuscript, experimental studies on the instability and hysteresis in an all-normal dispersion (ANDi) fiber laser have been presented. The laser was mode-locked by using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror and a chirped fiber Bragg grating in linear cavity configuration and under the stable conditions it delivered stationary dissipative soliton pulses with characteristic rectangular-shaped steep-edged spectrum. With increasing the pump power, the laser transits to a non-stationary state with a near trapezoidal-shaped spectrum with significant temporal instabilities. The hysteresis associated with the state transition and variations in spectral characteristics has been studied including dispersive Fourier transform based analysis. Pump power induced state transition in an ANDi linear cavity with a physical saturable absorber without the influence of any physical polarization controller or apparent limitation due to spectral filtering is the key observation presented in this paper.
