Abstract:The Gilbert-Varshamov (GV for short) bound has been a benchmark for good Hamming-metric codes. It was even conjectured by some coding theorists that the asymptotic Gilbert-Varshamov bound is tight. The GV bound had remained to be the best asymptotic lower bound for thirty years before it was broken by the Tsfasman-Vladut-Zink bound via algebraic geometry codes. The discovery of algebraic geometry codes by Goppa was a breakthrough in coding theory. After another twenty years, no any improvements on the Tsfasman-Vladut-Zink bound took place before the work by Xing-Elkies [14, 15, 1, 2] in the early of 2000 via tools from algebraic geometry. By using the similar ideas as in [14, 15, 9], some further improvements were given in [7, 17]. Since then, no further progress on asymptotic lower bounds has been made. The main result of this paper is to show that all previous asymptotic lower bounds can be improved in an interval. We present two types of constructions of Hamming-metric codes. Both constructions involve algebraic geometry and need insights on applications of algebraic geometry to coding theory. In order to obtain good codes, one construction requires a larger number of positive divisors of fixed degree, while other construction requires a smaller number of positive divisors of fixed degree. As a result, no matter how large the number of positive divisors of fixed degree is, we can always obtain codes with good parameters. It turns out that all previous asymptotic lower bounds are improved.

Abstract:AbstractThe Gilbert-Varshamov (GV) bound for asymptotic families of codes over Fq has been improved by Tsfasman, Vla&breve;dut$80, and Zink (TVZ) in 1982, and only recently further improvements have been obtained by Xing, Elkies, and Niederreiter-Özbudak, by considering also nonlinear codes. These improvements involve higher derivations in function fields and are very computational. We give in this correspondence a much simpler proof for those improvements. Our construction of asymptotically good nonlinear codes is very similar to Goppa's construction of algebraic-geometry codes.

Abstract:The Gilbert--Varshamov (GV) bound is a classical existential result in coding theory. It implies that a random linear binary code of rate $\epsilon^2$ has relative distance at least $\frac{1}{2} - O(\epsilon)$ with high probability. However, it is a major challenge to construct explicit codes with similar parameters. One hope to derandomize the Gilbert--Varshamov construction is with code concatenation: We begin with a (hopefully explicit) outer code ${C}_\mathrm{out}$ over a large alphabet, and concatenate that with a small binary random linear code ${C}_\mathrm{in}$. It is known that when we use independent small codes for each coordinate, then the result lies on the GV bound with high probability, but this still uses a lot of randomness. In this paper, we consider the question of whether code concatenation with a single random linear inner code ${C}_\mathrm{in}$ can lie on the GV bound; and if so what conditions on ${C}_\mathrm{out}$ are sufficient for this. We show that first, there do exist linear outer codes ${C}_\mathrm{out}$ that are "good" for concatenation in this sense (in fact, most linear codes codes are good). We also provide two sufficient conditions for ${C}_\mathrm{out}$, so that if ${C}_\mathrm{out}$ satisfies these, ${C}_\mathrm{out}\circ {C}_\mathrm{in}$ will likely lie on the GV bound. We hope that these conditions may inspire future work towards constructing explicit codes ${C}_\mathrm{out}$.

Abstract:Most bounds on the size of codes hold for any code, whether linear or nonlinear. Notably, the Griesmer bound, holds only in the linear case. In this paper we characterize a family of systematic nonlinear codes for which the Griesmer bound holds. Moreover, we show that the Griesmer bound does not necessarily hold for a systematic code by showing explicit counterexamples. On the other hand, we are also able to provide (weaker) versions of the Griesmer bound holding for all systematic codes.

Abstract:We show that every self-orthogonal code over $\mathbb F_q$ of length $n$ can be extended to a self-dual code, if there exists self-dual codes of length $n$. Using a family of Galois towers of algebraic function fields we show that over any nonprime field $\mathbb F_q$, with $q\geq 64$, except possibly $q=125$, there are self-dual codes better than the asymptotic Gilbert--Varshamov bound.

Abstract:In the present paper, we construct a class of nonlinear codes by making use of higher order derivatives of certain functions of algebraic curves. It turns out that the asymptotic bound derived from the Goppa geometry codes can be improved for the entire interval (0,1). In particular, the Tsfasman-Vladut-Zink (TVZ) bound is ameliorated for the entire interval (0,1).

Abstract:A finite Gilbert-Varshamov (GV) bound for pure stabilizer (binary and nonbinary) quantum error correcting codes is presented in analogy to the GV bound for classical codes by using several enumerative results in finite unitary geometry. From this quantum GV bound we obtain several new binary quantum codes in a nonconstructive way having better parameters than the known codes.

Abstract:Hopping cyclic codes (HCCs) are (non-linear) cyclic codes with the additional property that the $n$ cyclic shifts of every given codeword are all distinct, where $n$ is the code length. Constant weight binary hopping cyclic codes are also known as optical orthogonal codes (OOCs). HCCs and OOCs have various practical applications and have been studied extensively over the years. The main concern of this paper is to present improved Gilbert-Varshamov type lower bounds for these codes, when the minimum distance is bounded below by a linear factor of the code length. For HCCs, we improve the previously best known lower bound of Niu, Xing, and Yuan by a linear factor of the code length. For OOCs, we improve the previously best known lower bound of Chung, Salehi, and Wei, and Yang and Fuja by a quadratic factor of the code length. As by-products, we also provide improved lower bounds for frequency hopping sequences sets and error-correcting weakly mutually uncorrelated codes. Our proofs are based on tools from probability theory and graph theory, in particular the McDiarmid's inequality on the concentration of Lipschitz functions and the independence number of locally sparse graphs.

Abstract:We use the algebraic structure of cyclic codes and some properties of the discrete Fourier transform to give a reformulation of several classical bounds for the distance of cyclic codes, by extending techniques of linear algebra. We propose a bound, whose computational complexity is polynomial bounded, which is a generalization of the Hartmann-Tzeng bound and the Betti-Sala bound. In the majority of computed cases, our bound is the tightest among all known polynomial-time bounds, including the Roos bound.

Abstract:We study cyclic codes over the ring H of order 4 and characteristic 2 defined by generators and relations as H=⟨a,b∣2a=2b=0,a2=0,b2=b,ab=ba=0⟩. This is the first time that cyclic codes over a non-unitary ring are studied. Every cyclic code of length n over H is uniquely determined by the data of an ordered pair of binary cyclic codes of length n. We characterize self-dual, quasi-self-dual, and linear complementary dual cyclic codes H. We classify cyclic codes of length at most 7 up to equivalence. A Gray map between cyclic codes of length n over H and quasi-cyclic codes of length 2n over F2 is studied.

Abstract:It was shown by Massey that linear complementary dual (LCD) codes are asymptotically good. In 2004, Sendrier proved that LCD codes meet the asymptotic Gilbert-Varshamov (GV) bound. Until now, the GV bound still remains to be the best asymptotical lower bound for LCD codes. In this paper, we show that an algebraic geometry code over a finite field of even characteristic is equivalent to an LCD code and consequently there exists a family of LCD codes that are equivalent to algebraic geometry codes and exceed the asymptotical GV bound.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a class of -additive cyclic codes generated by 3-tuples of polynomials, where p is a prime number and . We investigate the algebraic structure of these codes and establish that it is possible to determine generator matrices for a subfamily of codes within this class. We employ a probabilistic approach to analyze the asymptotic properties of these codes. For any positive real number satisfying such that the asymptotic Gilbert-Varshamov bound at is greater than , we demonstrate that the relative distance of the random code converges to , while the rate of the random code converges to . Finally, we conclude that the -additive cyclic codes exhibit asymptotically good properties.

Griesmer Bound and Constructions of Linear Codes in $b$-Symbol Metric

Abstract:The $b$-symbol metric is a generalization of the Hamming metric. Linear codes, in the $b$-symbol metric, have been used in the read channel whose outputs consist of $b$ consecutive symbols. The Griesmer bound outperforms the Singleton bound for $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear codes in the Hamming metric, when $q$ is fixed and the length is large enough. This scenario is also applicable in the $b$-symbol metric. Shi, Zhu, and Helleseth recently made a conjecture on cyclic codes in the $b$-symbol metric. In this paper, we present the $b$-symbol Griesmer bound for linear codes by concatenating linear codes and simplex codes. Based on cyclic codes and extended cyclic codes, we propose two families of distance-optimal linear codes with respect to the $b$-symbol Griesmer bound.

A tight upper bound on the number of non-zero weights of a quasi-cyclic code

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a quasi-cyclic code of index $l(l\geq2)$. Let $G$ be the subgroup of the automorphism group of $\mathcal{C}$ generated by $\rho^l$ and the scalar multiplications of $\mathcal{C}$, where $\rho$ denotes the standard cyclic shift. In this paper, we find an explicit formula of orbits of $G$ on $\mathcal{C}\setminus \{\mathbf{0}\}$. Consequently, an explicit upper bound on the number of nonzero weights of $\mathcal{C}$ is immediately derived and a necessary and sufficient condition for codes meeting the bound is exhibited. If $\mathcal{C}$ is a one-generator quasi-cyclic code, a tighter upper bound on the number of nonzero weights of $\mathcal{C}$ is obtained by considering a larger automorphism subgroup which is generated by the multiplier, $\rho^l$ and the scalar multiplications of $\mathcal{C}$. In particular, we list some examples to show the bounds are tight. Our main result improves and generalizes some of the results in \cite{M2}.

Self-Dual Cyclic Codes with Square-Root-Like Lower Bounds on Their Minimum Distances

Abstract:Binary self-dual cyclic codes have been studied since the classical work of Sloane and Thompson published in IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 29, 1983. Twenty five years later, an infinite family of binary self-dual cyclic codes with lengths $n_i$ and minimum distances $d_i \geq \frac{1}{2} \sqrt{n_i+2}$ was presented in a paper of IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 55, 2009. However, no infinite family of Euclidean self-dual binary cyclic codes whose minimum distances have the square-root lower bound and no infinite family of Euclidean self-dual nonbinary cyclic codes whose minimum distances have a lower bound better than the square-root lower bound are known in the literature. In this paper, an infinite family of Euclidean self-dual cyclic codes over the fields ${\bf F}_{2^s}$ with a square-root-like lower bound is constructed. An infinite subfamily of this family consists of self-dual binary cyclic codes with the square-root lower bound. Another infinite subfamily of this family consists of self-dual cyclic codes over the fields ${\bf F}_{2^s}$ with a lower bound better than the square-root bound for $s \geq 2$. Consequently, two breakthroughs in coding theory are made in this paper. An infinite family of self-dual binary cyclic codes with a square-root-like lower bound is also presented in this paper. An infinite family of Hermitian self-dual cyclic codes over the fields ${\bf F}_{2^{2s}}$ with a square-root-like lower bound and an infinite family of Euclidean self-dual linear codes over ${\bf F}_{q}$ with $q \equiv 1 \pmod{4}$ with a square-root-like lower bound are also constructed in this paper.

Abstract:Cyclic codes are important in both theory and practice and have wide applications in communication and storage systems. It is interesting to construct infinite families of binary cyclic codes, where dimensions are close to half of the length and the minimum distances approach the square-root bound. Motivated by recent works on binary cyclic codes published by Tang and Ding (2022)[9] and Liu et al. (2023) [4], the objective of this paper is to construct several infinite families of binary cyclic codes of length and dimensions close to half of the length. We developed some lower bounds on their minimum distances using the BCH bound for cyclic codes, which exhibit square-root-like lower bounds. The parameters of the dual codes of these binary cyclic codes were also investigated.

Abstract:Using group theory, we analyze cycle GF(2p) codes that use Cayley graphs as their associated graphs. First, we show that through row and column permutations the parity check matrix H can be put in a concatenation form of row-permuted block-diagonal matrices. Encoding utilizing this form can be performed in linear time and in parallel. Second, we derive a rule to determine the nonzero entries of H and present determinate and semi-determinate codes. Our simulations show that the determinate and semi-determinate codes have better performance than codes with randomly generated nonzero entries for GF(16) and GF(64), and have similar performance for GF(256). The constructed determinate and semi-determinate codes over GF(64) and GF(256) can outperform the binary irregular counterparts of the same block lengths. One distinct advantage for determinate and semi-determinate codes is that they greatly reduce the storage cost of H for decoding. The results in this correspondence are appealing for the implementation of efficient encoders and decoders for this class of promising LDPC codes, especially when the block length is large.

Abstract:Analytic combinatorics in several variables refers to a suite of tools that provide sharp asymptotic estimates for certain combinatorial quantities. In this paper, we apply these tools to determine the Gilbert--Varshamov lower bound on the rate of optimal codes in $L_1$ metric. Several different code spaces are analyzed, including the simplex and the hypercube in $\mathbb{Z^n}$, all of which are inspired by concrete data storage and transmission models such as the sticky insertion channel, the permutation channel, the adjacent transposition (bit-shift) channel, the multilevel flash memory channel, etc.
