Abstract:A clean process was developed for the carbothermic reduction of stibnite concentrates by adding Na2CO3 molten salt as a sulfur-fixing agent under a microwave field. Analysis of the carbothermic reduction thermodynamics and dielectric measurements of samples confirmed the technical feasibility of this novel method. The Sb content in the metal block was 97.57 % with the conditions: temperature of 750 °C, 70 % Na2CO3 added, 5 % anthracite, and 60 min under microwave roasting. Microwave roasting has the advantage that the Sb metal blocks produced are easier to separate from slag than conventional roasting. The mechanism for the carbothermic reduction shows that the eddy current effect of microwaves on the Sb metal surface results in a temperature gradient inside the mixture and provides an additional driving force for the aggregation of Sb particles into Sb blocks. This method of Sb metal preparation under microwave roasting is superior to that under conventional roasting.
