Abstract:Partity-time symmetry enables a quantum system or an optical/electromagnetic structure to have real eigenvalue spectra of energy (or wave number). A relatively simple and convenient scenario, which takes advantage of multi-level transition and optical pumping in a four-level atomic system, is suggested in order to achieve parity-time symmetry of such an atomic medium. In the present parity-time symmetric atomic vapor, the real part of the obtained electric permittivity is a constant, and the imaginary part is an odd function (e.g., sine function of spatial coordinate). The optical characteristics of such a parity-time symmetric periodic dielectric have also been studied in this paper. It can be found that the Bloch wave numbers in the present periodic dielectric are purely real or purely imaginary. A threshold in the magnitude of the imaginary part of the parity-time symmetric permittivity for emergence of forbidden band is also indicated in our numerical calculation. The present scenario for realizing parity-time symmetric atomic vapor would find potential applications in some new photonic or quantum optical device design and fabrication.

Abstract:Abstract Parity-time (PT) symmetry has been unveiling new photonic regimes in non-Hermitian systems, with opportunities for lasing, sensing and enhanced light-matter interactions. The most exotic responses emerge at the exceptional point (EP) and in the broken PT-symmetry phase, yet in conventional PT-symmetric systems these regimes require large levels of gain and loss, posing remarkable challenges in practical settings. Floquet PT-symmetry, which may be realized by periodically flipping the effective gain/loss distribution in time, can relax these requirements and tailor the EP and PT-symmetry phases through the modulation period. Here, we explore Floquet PT-symmetry in an integrated photonic waveguide platform, in which the role of time is replaced by the propagation direction. We experimentally demonstrate spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking at small gain/loss levels and efficient control of amplification and suppression through the excitation ports. Our work introduces the advantages of Floquet PT-symmetry in a practical integrated photonic setting, enabling a powerful platform to observe PT-symmetric phenomena and leverage their extreme features, with applications in nanophotonics, coherent control of nanoscale light amplification and routing.

A High-Q Vertical Light Emission From Active Parity-Time Symmetric Gratings

Abstract:This work presents a theoretical investigation of an active photonic grating of the parity-time (PT) symmetric architecture. The analytical study of the free-space mode propagation from the grating structure indicates the unique bifurcation property due to the PT-symmetry modulation. It is shown that both the gain/loss contrast and the lattice constant parameters are critical factors to modulate the active photonic system in between the PT-symmetry to the symmetry-broken phases. Furthermore, numerical simulations via the Rigorous Coupled-Wave Analysis (RCWA) method discover the existence of a unique Spectral Singularity (SS) phenomenon in this PT grating structure, which corresponds to a non-trivial single-mode and near-zero bandwidth photonic resonant emission. Also, the guiding procedure for fulfilling SS modes is found to be related to the unique formation of the scattering matrix applied in the PT-symmetric photonic gratings. This theoretical work takes a fresh look into the active PT-symmetric photonic gratings focusing on the discovery of new free-space emission modes rather than the commonly studied unidirectional properties, which could contribute to the development of novel low-threshold and super-coherent surface-emitting devices.

Abstract:Parity-time (PT) symmetry and broken in micro/nano photonic structures have been investigated extensively as they bring new opportunities to control the flow of light based on non-Hermitian optics. Previous studies have focused on the situations of PT-symmetry broken in loss-loss or gain-loss coupling systems. Here, we theoretically predict the gain-gain and gain-lossless PT-broken from phase diagram, where the boundaries between PT-symmetry and PT-broken can be clearly defined in the full-parameter space including gain, lossless and loss. For specific micro/nano photonic structures, such as coupled waveguides, we give the transmission matrices of each phase space, which can be used for beam splitting. Taking coupled waveguides as an example, we obtain periodic energy exchange in PT-symmetry phase and exponential gain or loss in PT-broken phase, which are consistent with the phase diagram. The scenario giving a full view of PT-symmetry or broken, will not only deepen the understanding of fundamental physics, but also will promote the breakthrough of photonic applications like optical routers and beam splitters.

Abstract:We explore the consequences of incorporating parity and time reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetries on the dynamics of nonreciprocal light propagation exhibited by a class of nonuniform periodic structures known as chirped $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The interplay among various grating parameters such as chirping, detuning, nonlinearities, and gain/loss gives rise to unique bi- and multi-stable states in the unbroken as well as broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regimes. The role of chirping on the steering dynamics of the hysteresis curve is influenced by the type of nonlinearities and the nature of detuning parameter. Also, incident directions of the input light robustly impact the steering dynamics of bistable and multistable states both in the unbroken and broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regimes. When the light launching direction is reversed, critical stable states are found to occur at very low intensities which opens up a new avenue for an additional way of controlling light with light. We also analyze the phenomenon of unidirectional wave transport and the reflective bi- and multi-stable characteristics at the so-called $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking point.

Abstract:We show that parity-time (PT) symmetric Bragg periodic structures, near the spontaneous PT - symmetry breaking point, can act as unidirectional invisible media. In this regime, the re flection from one end is diminished while it is enhanced from the other. At the same time the transmission coefficient and phase, are indistinguishable from those expected in the absence of a grating. The phenomenon is robust even in the presence of Kerr non-linearities, and it can also effectively suppress optical bistabilities.

Abstract:Optical systems combining balanced loss and gain provide a unique platform to implement classical analogues of quantum systems described by non-Hermitian parity–time (PT)-symmetric Hamiltonians. Such systems can be used to create synthetic materials with properties that cannot be attained in materials having only loss or only gain. Here we report PT-symmetry breaking in coupled optical resonators. We observed non-reciprocity in the PT-symmetry-breaking phase due to strong field localization, which significantly enhances nonlinearity. In the linear regime, light transmission is reciprocal regardless of whether the symmetry is broken or unbroken. We show that in one direction there is a complete absence of resonance peaks whereas in the other direction the transmission is resonantly enhanced, a feature directly associated with the use of resonant structures. Our results could lead to a new generation of synthetic optical systems enabling on-chip manipulation and control of light propagation.

Abstract:The concept of parity-time symmetry (PT symmetry) originates from the canonical quantum mechanics and has become a hot topic recently. As a versatile platform to investigate the intriguing concept, both theoretical and experimental works in optics have been implemented. In this paper, the PT symmetry breaking phenomenon is investigated in a coupled nanobeam cavity system. An exceptional point is observed during the tuning of the gain/loss level and the coupling strength of the closely placed nanobeam pair. Unidirectional light propagation is investigated, as well as enhanced sensitivity of single particle detection in the vicinity of the exceptional point. The proposed system is easy to be integrated with photonic integrated circuits and can be strongly coupled to optical waveguides.

On the contrary, the periodic modulation method is a more feasible alternative. It is worth noting that periodic modulation in optical system is mainly performed through the cyclic change of complex refractive index materials. Unlike the traditional method of aligning periodically modulated waveguides in parallel to gain-dissipative waveguides to satisfy PT symmetry, an innovative physical model introduced in this work, features the cross-placement of these waveguides, marking it the first instance to use this configuration to manipulate PT symmetry. In this work, the influence of periodic modulation on the energy spectrum of the system in the high-frequency approximation is studied, and the dynamical evolution of light in a non-Hermitian four-channel optical waveguide is elucidated through a synergistic method of combining analytical method and numerical method. Abstract:Parity-time (PT) symmetry is a fundamental notion in quantum field theories. It has opened a new paradigm for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians ranging from quantum mechanics, electronics, to optics. In the realm of optics, optical loss is responsible for power dissipation, therefore typically degrading device performance such as attenuation of a laser beam. By carefully exploiting optical loss in the complex dielectric permittivity, however, recent exploration of PT symmetry revolutionizes our understandings in fundamental physics and intriguing optical phenomena such as exceptional points and phase transition that are critical for high-speed optical modulators. The interplay between optical gain and loss in photonic PT synthetic matters offers a new criterion of positively utilizing loss to efficiently manipulate gain and its associated optical properties. Instead of simply compensating optical loss in conventional lasers, for example, it is theoretically proposed that judiciously designed delicate modulation of optical loss and gain can lead to PT synthetic lasing that fundamentally broadens laser physics. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of PT synthetic lasers. By carefully exploiting the interplay between gain and loss, we achieve degenerate eigen modes at the same frequency but with complex conjugate gain and loss coefficients. In contrast to conventional ring cavity lasers with multiple modes, the PT synthetic micro-ring laser exhibits an intrinsic single mode lasing: the non-threshold PT broken phase inherently associated in such a photonic system squeezes broadband optical gain into a single lasing mode regardless of the gain spectral bandwidth. This chip-scale semiconductor platform provides a unique route towards fundamental explorations of PT physics and next generation of optoelectronic devices for optical communications and computing.

Abstract:Parity-time (PT) symmetry originating from quantum mechanics has extended to other branches, such as optics and acoustics. In acoustics, the studies have mainly focus on fluids, such as air, and, in particular, they have not involved periodicity of structure, as seen in phononic crystals (PC). The current work introduces loss-gain PT symmetry into periodic elastic PC lattice systems that can simultaneously realize unidirectional zero reflection and extraordinarily high transmission under the condition: a certain number of unit cells of PC. In particular, it is shown that the infinite periodic PT symmetric PC (PT-S-PC) shows coalescence of band structure. Interface response theory of the system is used to investigate the scattering matrix of finite PT-S-PCs. The results show that the transmittance is extraordinarily high, reaching hundreds, at the frequency associated with the coalescence point of the infinite periodic PT-S-PC. The extraordinary transmission appears periodic-like with respect to the number of cells of the PT-S-PC system, and this extraordinary transmission resonance has an ultrahigh quality factor. Moreover, the scattering characteristics of the PT-S-PC system in the locally resonant band gap are explored. This work provides a new way to manipulate elastic waves and opens the path to design new devices, for example, for non-destructive testing.

Abstract:The concept of parity-time (PT) symmetry exploits the interplay between the material loss and gain to attain novel optical phenomena such as exceptional point and unidirectional light propagation. Here we experimentally demonstrate a PT symmetry breaking laser that allows unique control of the resonant modes. In contrast to conventional ring cavity lasers with multiple competing modes, our on-chip InGaAsP/InP based PT microring laser exhibits intrinsic single-mode lasing regardless of the gain spectral bandwidth. Threshold less parity-time symmetry breaking due to the rotationally symmetric structure leads to stable single-mode operation at the specific whispering gallery mode order.

Abstract:We introduce a novel concept of the pseudo-parity-time (pseudo-PT) symmetry in periodically modulated optical systems with balanced gain and loss. We demonstrate that whether or not the original system is PT symmetric, we can manipulate the property of the PT symmetry by applying a periodic modulation in such a way that the effective system derived by the high-frequency Floquet method is PT symmetric. If the original system is non-PT symmetric, the PT symmetry in the effective system will lead to quasistationary propagation that can be associated with the pseudo-PT symmetry. Our results provide a promising approach for manipulating the PT symmetry of realistic systems.

Abstract:We propose a zero phase delay waveguide simply utilizing two parity-time (PT) photonic crystals (PCs) magnetized in opposite directions. Based on the bulk one-way phase velocity of the PCs, electromagnetic wave incident normally on such a waveguide experiences reverse phase change, which makes the outgoing wave have the same phase with the incident wave, i.e. zero phase delay. By adjusting the filling ratio of the two PCs, we can feasibly realize zero phase delay in a wide frequency range, which provides potential for practical applications.

Abstract:In this work, the optical properties and dynamical behaviors of the optical parametric oscillation under the anti Parity-Time (anti-PT) symmetry are studied. The non-Hermitian optical system is composed of two whispering-gallery mode micorcavities with one cavity supports the χ2 nonliearity. Compared with the previous non-Hermitian system that relies on optical gain and loss, the proposed system could achieve the ultra-fast control of anti-PT symmetry by adjusting the parameter gain and coupling strength. Moreover, by focusing on the anti-PT symmetrical system and asymmetrical gain under linear pumping conditions, we find that the system provides the asymmetric transmission under the anti-PT symmetry, meanwhile the nonreciprocal transmission would be achieved by breaking the antiPT symmetry. We believe these results may be further applied to optical diodes, optical switches and other optical devices which may pave the way of nanophotonics and quantum information science.

Abstract:The parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric structures have exhibited potential applications in developing various robust quantum devices. In an optical trimmer with balanced loss and gain, we analytically study the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric phase transition by investigating the spontaneous symmetric breaking. We also illustrate the single-photon transmission behaviors in both of the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric and $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry broken phases. We find (i) the non-periodical dynamics of single-photon transmission in the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry broken phase instead of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric phase can be regarded as a signature of phase transition; and (ii) it shows unidirectional single-photon transmission behavior in both of the phases but comes from different underlying physical mechanisms. The obtained results may be useful to implement the photonic devices based on coupled-cavity system.

Abstract:Temporal interfaces introduced by abrupt switching of the constitutive parameters of unbounded media enable unusual wave phenomena. So far, their explorations have been mostly limited to lossless media. Yet, non-Hermitian phenomena leveraging material loss and gain, and their balanced combination in parity-time (PT)-symmetric systems, have been opening new vistas in photonics. Here, we unveil the role that temporal interfaces offer in non-Hermitian physics, introducing the dual of PT symmetry for temporal boundaries. Our findings reveal unexplored interference mechanisms enabling extreme energy manipulation, and open new scenarios for time-switched metamaterials, connecting them with the broad opportunities offered by non-Hermitian phenomena.
